India is Now on the Moon, First to Land on the South Pole

Congratulations to India for being the first county to successfully land on the lunar south pole. The 4th country overall. Here are some video clips.

Russia was scheduled to land on the South Pole ahead of India, but two days ago Russia’s first lunar mission in decades crashed into the moon. Instead, honors go to India.

India Is on the Moon

Reuters reports Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft lands on the moon in ‘victory cry of a new India’

An Indian spacecraft landed on the rugged, unexplored south pole of the moon on Wednesday in a mission seen as crucial to lunar exploration and India’s standing as a space power, just days after a similar Russian lander crashed.

“This moment is unforgettable. It is phenomenal. This is a victory cry of a new India,” said Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who waved the Indian flag as he watched the landing from South Africa where he is attending a BRICS summit, a group that joins Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

“India is on the moon,” said S. Somanath, chief of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) as the Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft landed, making India the fourth nation to successfully land a spacecraft on the moon after the United States, China and Russia.

This was India’s second attempt to land a spacecraft on the moon and comes less than a week after Russia’s Luna-25 mission failed. People across the country were glued to television screens and said prayers as the spacecraft approached the surface.

Mish,

Thank you for posting this. Citizens around the world should be celebrating India’s accomplishments. Especially when it’s great achievements of mankind.
I’ve only seen one other news article about this when they launched so good job doing your part of true journalism.

I see the landing on the moon by India as just another example of “my dk is bigger than your dk” huff and puffery. Considering the immense amount of poverty, the limited access to clean water and electricity throughout India, I can only imagine the kind of alleviation of suffering the billions spent on space travel might have provided to at least some of India’s population.

I find this absolutely disgraceful. India is a country with serious water shortages, with limited access to clean drinking water that effects the lives of tens of millions of people – and here they are engaging in vanity projects, like going to the moon – when the hundreds of millions spent on this nonscence, could have been used more effectively to help the poor and destitute, of which there are an abundance in India.

India’s population is growing rapidly.
They need to find places to put surplus people.
Anyplace.

The cherry on the top would be for India’s craft to pick up some pieces of the crashed Russian lander and return them to Putin.

The one remark about the US, Russia, and China watching in amazement would be true if this was 1960. Good for India, but not exactly earth shattering.

What a joke. People are applauding to 1960s animations? It’s 2023 people. Where is the 4k-60 video? Is this a parody of the US moon missions? I’m not saying they didn’t land. I’m asking where the video is because our species now has all the technology needed to send real video.

#1) Has India established a 200 mile economic zone around the landing site?
#2) Do they have exclusive rights to 7-11/White Hen franchises on the moon?

Why the west countries give millions in humanitarian aid to a country that has nuclear weapons and money to spend in space missions?

The article is untruthful. The actual order is Russia (1959), then the US, China and now India.
Why do so many articles put the US first in the list? Or Russia after China?
But congrats India.

What a waste of money and talent for India! The resources used in this vanity project would have been better deployed working on India’s infrastructure, electrification, etc.

Putin has an exact twin but because they look completely alike Putin put his brother into an iron mask that he can’t take off and sent him to a farm in Siberia where he is treated well but can’t leave. The Iron Mask Putin is the opposite of his brother in that he is kind and intelligent. Prigozhin knew that he would make a better Czar than the present Putin and keep Russia from disaster. Prigozhin planned to free the Iron Mask Putin and have him replace the present Putin who would in his turn be put into and Iron Mask and sent to Siberia. Unfortunately he was betrayed and the plot revealed. In the wreckage of the plane you will find Prigozhin and a man who looks exactly like Putin. But wait! The story is not over. Putin’s mother gave birth to triplets.

Good for India! Their space program is up and coming but has a long way to go. Russia’s space program is an example of how a once excellent organization has become under Putin a vehicle for graft, corruption and favoritism. Roscosmos won’t recover because it is dead already.

The Russian space program is just fine. They’ve been virtually singlehandedly keeping the international space station afloat for years after the space shuttle retired. Every country has had plenty of space craft crash land including the USA.

It’s definitely a great day for India’s space program and an excellent opportunity to explore the south polar region of the moon.

In the last ten years the only thing Roscomos was able to do was supply the ISS using a rocket and motors developed decades before and never really updated since. Now with competition principally from SpaceX and the fall-out from invading Ukraine Roscomos has no more foreign contracts and no domestic industry to fall back on. They of course have plans to do everything but no money nor expertise to do it. The only thing they have is the ISS and they will have to leave that soon leaving them nothing but military contracts which are scanty. It’s a slow agonizing death for a once great agency. You can thank Putin for that.

The Russian RD-180 engine is highly efficient and is reliable. It was more efficient than US rocket engines that used RP-LOX fuel & oxidizer. The Shuttle Main Engines were hydrogen powered….very finicky. The efficiency for thrust/weight ratio is expressed as ISP (Specific Impulse). The RD-180 had higher ISP than US rocket engines and US engineers were dumbfounded how the Russians had accomplished this.

ROSCOSMOS no longer supplies engines to United Launch Alliance for their Atlas-V. ULS has enough RD-180s to transition to the upcoming Blue Origins BL-4 rocket engine. But even then, the Russian engine produces more thrust than the newly developed BL-4. There are pros & cons to each system.

Yes, Spacex is using their Merlin engines on their rockets and they are shooting them off like crazy as I can see the launches from my backyard. Spacex launched about 53 rockets last year,,,,I think 47 from Cape Canaveral. There is a manned launch scheduled later this week.

No. Russia’s Space Program has lost most of its customers.
SpaceX has almost completely replaced them and now launches more Tonnage to Orbit than any other company OR country. China being a distant #2.
They just crashed their first real shot at the Moon in 50 years…and that won’t sell too many trips the the Space Station.

If their program is so corrupt, how did they get a lander to the moon? It crashed, but in order to crash it had to get to the moon.

They have rockets but the software programs and hardware just wasn’t up to the task. Sending a rocket up is much easier than to land it on the Moon or somewhere else.

You answered your own question. Russia has failed miserably. They used to ship almost everything to Orbit…including astronauts. Now SpaceX does payload weight to orbit than ALL others, including China, a distant #2.
