Control of the House is back to square one as another compromise idea blows up. This is very amusing …. for Democrats.
“Jim Jordan Backs Plan to Give Powers to Patrick McHenry as Temporary Speaker“
That’s an amusing WSJ headline because when you click on it you see this: Jim Jordan Plans Third Speaker Vote After Alternative Plan Collapses
Republican speaker nominee Rep. Jim Jordan said he would embark on a third floor vote after a plan to temporarily put caretaker speaker Rep. Patrick McHenry in charge of the House ran into sharp objections from conservatives.
“I am still running for speaker and I plan to go to the floor and get the votes and win this race,” Jordan said after leaving a heated closed-door meeting of House Republicans. He said that he first wanted to talk to the GOP lawmakers who voted against him, and that a pitch to elect a temporary speaker didn’t have the support of the conference.
“We need to be able to bring our agenda forward,” said Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart (R., Fla.), who opposed Jordan. “Anything that will get us in that direction I think is a good step,” he said. But Rep. Jim Banks (R., Ind.), a Jordan supporter, called the plan ”a giant betrayal.”
Rep. Pat Fallon (R., Texas) estimated that about two-thirds of the House Republican conference opposed the idea.
While the plan would have kept the GOP majority in charge of the narrowly divided chamber, passing any measure to empower McHenry would likely have required Democratic votes, raising the possibility of concessions to get them on board. Democrats have suggested a rule change to enable legislation with significant bipartisan support to come to the House floor without having to go through the Rules Committee.
Some GOP lawmakers are running out of patience with the efforts to replace McCarthy. Rep. David Valadao (R., Calif.), one of 18 Republicans from a district won by President Biden, said that time had run out and that he was ready to vote for McHenry.
“It’s clear that the current candidates do not have the support necessary to become speaker,” said Valadao, who had backed Jordan in the first two rounds. He said he supported empowering McHenry “so we can immediately reopen the House while we work to find consensus.”
Jordan’s critics are also starting to complain more regularly, and with greater detail, about the tactics used by Jordan supporters to try to keep them in line, suggesting that they are hardening against reconsidering their opposition. On Wednesday, Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R., Iowa) said she had received credible death threats after she voted against Jordan on Wednesday. “One thing I cannot stomach or support is a bully,” she said.
Political Games
Q: Did Jordan really back Rep. Patrick McHenry?
A: I doubt it. He knew full well that plan would fail.
This was the plan all along: “I am still running for speaker and I plan to go to the floor and get the votes and win this race.”

Headed Backward, Jordan Gets Less Votes for House Speaker in the 2nd Ballot
Yesterday, I noted Headed Backward, Jordan Gets Less Votes for House Speaker in the 2nd Ballot
Judging from “time has run out” comments today by Rep. David Valadao, and “One thing I cannot stomach or support is a bully” comments by Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks, Jordan likely lost even more support.
Hoot of the Day
The idea that Jordan can get legislation through Congress given his pathetic track record is more than a bit laughable.
Refusal to Deal
Political Reality: When you totally refuse to deal, you are at the mercy of those who will.
Jordan is a failure. If you insist, it’s a principled failure.
But who is the winner? The answer in this case is the Democrats.
To repeat for the third fourth time, the idea that 8 people can change agenda is a total joke. There are too many people willing to compromise.
Someone who will openly compromise or be forced to compromise later will be the next Speaker.
That means the gang of 8 would have gotten better results from McCarthy than whoever the next speaker might be, even if it’s Jordan himself!
Jordan Throws Spitballs
Jordan’s hardball tactics when all he really has to offer is spitballs, makes it is clear that he is nothing more than a sore loser at best.
That Jordan refuses to step aside despite far less support that McCarthy had is proof enough.
There is no gain for anarchy by Republicans. Unfortunately the humiliation and losses due to Matt Gaetz and Jim Jordan continue.
That statement does not imply I like McCarthy. It’s simply a note that anarchy and losses are not an improvement to the status quo.

“Control of the House is back to square one as another compromise idea blows up. This is very amusing …. for Democrats.”
It is another symptom of the decline of the American Empire.
I find it sad to watch, and am disgraced with our supposed leaders.
If you pulled a wet paper bag over their heads, most would drown, before getting free…
“It’s simply a note that anarchy and losses are not an improvement to the status quo.”
The US govt is not in anarchy right now, it’s in (partial) paralysis. Which is the BIGGEST improvement to the status quo that can be reasonably hoped for.
For the whole world, Americans included.
The remaining true GOP conservatives better pull out from this now MAGA-dominated GOP. I know enough of the history of Weimar Germany to know what happens when the fascists are really in control.
Until Trump has been removed from the stage, the Repubs/Libertarians will never go to back to a politics we will be able to recognize. Right now they are all authoritarians. Bad authoritarians.
I agree, though it bears mention that the Tea Party was before Trump’s reign.
This is an anger problem, being redirected by special interests, the Tea Party was Carl Deininger staging a protest of bank bailouts, the Koch’s took it over and it became a protest of corporate and wealthy taxes, and, “Get your government hands off my Medicare”.
Republican voters are easy to redirect their anger, throw the word “immigrant” or “gun rights” at any target, they hate that target.
I’m independent, for the record.
..
It would be nice to see moderate republicans and dems join forces to crush the far right. The more of a circus the republican party becomes. The more of their voters will realize they dont agree with the far rt.
Anyway whats the punishment for treason. 6 mos probation 6000 dollar fine and a apology letter. Attempting to overthrow the government is less serious than a dui. Least could throw in a good ole tar and featherin.
Looks like some Cruze missiles were launched from Yemen toward Israel today.
On that note. I think these days everyone knows they are being spied on. So watch who is visiting who. The head of Hamas visited Putin a few days before the attack.
The Overton window has slid so far left that the far right is a guy who believes tax payers shouldn’t fund sex change operations and that a country should protect its borders.
“Politics is the entertainment division of the military-industrial complex.” — Frank Zappa
It is amusing to watch the Republican Party disappear up its own anus.
Alex, my comment was meant to be general, not a response to you. Sorry for the crap software.
“moderate republicans”
I believe the term for that is “Former politician”.
“It would be nice to see moderate republicans and dems join forces to crush the far right. The more of a circus the republican party becomes.”
It’s no coincidence the hostility and bombastic nature of the party started at Citizens United, either tow the line for the latest flavor-of-the-day billionaire campaign donor’s personal fetish, or you’re back to private sector.
Paul Manafort had a pro-Russian campaign platform for Trump in 2016, until he was called out for it. Later, two Giuliani associates were caught funneling Russian money into GOP SuperPACs, that’s scary.
Last I checked, bribery is listed as a “High Crime” in the constitution, yet this iteration of the SCOTUS seems to have concluded bribery is “Free Speech”.
Dems are bad too, but there’s no denying the right has a bigger problem with the level of acceptance on whom they’ll represent for a buck….anyone.
I’m sure Dems aren’t far behind.

I rarely talk to my neighbors about politics but we have coffee and discuss local issues. I avoid politics because they are all Trumphumpers and get upset to the point of wanting to fight and I don’t take things that seriously. Yet, this morning they brought up the House situation. Much to my surprise, as I simply listened, they were making fun of our GA District 8 Congressman Austin Scott for saying on TV it was Dems fault what’s happening there. They blame the RINOs who don’t support Trump and Jordan. Called Scott an idiot who needs someone to primary him. Lol.
Imo Thats part of the problem. Elected officials are expected to represent the party not the people who elected them. thats true on both sides of the isle. Same with campaign money comes from sources outside the district.
“…Elected officials are expected to represent the party not the people who elected them. thats true on both sides of the isle….”
Yes, yes, yes, yes.
And, those parties represent their biggest campaign donors.
If drug makers start funding Dems, we’ll see an epidemic of addictive drugs with millions dead – If banks fund republicans we’ll see laws the allow blatant market manipulation based on liar loans…oh, wait, we already saw those.
The list of perils from privatized government is endless.

FM, I think we went there awhile ago, but don’t worry, they are doubling down. It’s not so much the Dems, but more like Our Entire Government…

The article goes on and on…
Drug makers apparently fund over half of the public health agencies budgets. I presume Fauci and Walenski are Democrats. They deceived the public on behalf of their benefactors, the drug companies. $400 million to the PHA’s from Moderna.
Both political parties are bought off by the lobbyists. In the Senate, only Johnson stood up for the Covax injured.
Good news is if the clowns wait long enough the crash of US Treasuries will force spending cuts.
Nah, the fools still won’t cut even when the world views US debt as toilet paper.
Just growing pains. Perhaps the Republicans are metamorphosizing into a new Party: one with spine that has zero tolerance of Neocons and Rinos. That’s my positive spin on things.
I agree Alex, and I think they may have learned the “Long Game” which leaves them no room for RINO’s.
I thought it was smart, the way that Jordan handled things. This is what I anticipated He/they would do. This gave/gives more time to come to agreements on how to proceed moving forward.
Give up some now is my guess, as they are in power now, but layout what they want in return later, that meets what the requirements will be if the GOP gets in the WH.
Chances look good for that to occur at the moment anyway, so play the long game and make it happen. Seems that sentiment is on there side, so let it fly, and if your message is worth following, it will be done!!!
Biden to Hakeem, the regime change clown: Don’t do it !!!
I miss the party of Lincoln, Eisenhauer, Reagan and, yes, John McCain, you didn’t agree with them on everything, but you could at least respect them, not experience the urge to slap them, at least.
Republicans used to be decent stable and exemplary, now it’s a reality TV show.
When LBJ signed civil rights, the Dixicrat trash high-tailed to the GOP, it’s been straight down since.
Happy hour at a trailer park bar, the sleazier you are, the more popular.
..
Some say this Republican on Republican hate is due to many years of disenfranchisement and discrimination. Others say they came from broken homes or poverty that simply exacerbates the issues.
Everyone should just know that Republican Lives Matter.
Funny as all hell though…
I’m here most days with witty remarks 😉 unfortunately not too many people get them.
Seems Gaetz pulled a John McCain. Funny how being a “Maverick” is only cheered when it actually rewards Democrats. What Gaetz did spoiled the Uniparty for both Dems and Reps.
Spoiling the uni-party sounds like a good thing. As the old saying goes, no one is safe when the legislators are in session.
Gaetz is no John McCain, full stop.
McCain, the guy who wanted to set the world ablaze in war?
never should have let serfs and employees and slaves and tenants vote. owners and serfs. the way the world works.
The last vote count:
Jeffries: 209
Jordan: 198
Scalise: 7
McCarthy: 5
Seems clear to me, the majority want Jeffries.
What is that? Is that that new Obama common core math? 210 DON’T want a Left wing antisemitic extremist as house speaker.
It’s a bit of Nash equilibrium math, perhaps a bit too complicated for you. Here’s a link that might help.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nash_equilibrium
That would be a plurality of the vote, not quite a majority.
that is not a majority. it’s a plurality. and doesn’t win in this game.
This is what happens when adults act like children. They need to put their little diapers on and act like adults, grow up. These fools get paid a lot of money to do a job which they almost always fail miserably. I mean, even a weather person needs to be right 30% of the time to keep their job. These morons can’t get anything right and have an approval rating of what? 17%? {Pew} no that’s the source of the reading not how much Congress stinks. Oh and, this includes the extremist Democrats as well..
Just look at them. They are probably wearing diapers right now. (depends)
Please! We haven’t had responsible adults in power for a generation. Democracies always degenerate to the lowest common denominator. Graft for the poly-ticks and bread and circuses for the masses.
