The short answer is no.
Alleged Threat – SNAP Benefits End November 1
SNAP stands for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, widely known as food stamps.
Politico reports At Least 25 States Plan to Cut Off Food Aid Benefits in November
Millions of low-income Americans will lose access to food aid on Nov. 1, when half of states plan to cut off benefits due to the government shutdown.
Twenty-five states told POLITICO that they are issuing notices informing participants of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program — the nation’s largest anti-hunger initiative — that they won’t receive checks next month. Those states include California, Arkansas, Hawaii, Indiana, Mississippi and New Jersey. Others didn’t respond to requests for comment in time for publication.
USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service recently told every state that they’d need to hold off on distributing benefits until further notice, according to multiple state agencies.
“We just can’t do it without the government being open,” said Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins in a NewsNation interview Tuesday. “By Nov. 1, we are very hopeful this government reopens and we can begin moving that money out. But right now, half the states are shut down on SNAP.”
Lie of the Day?
The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities says Trump Administration Is Legally Required to Provide SNAP in Shutdown, Contrary to Its Claims
Statement of Sharon Parrott, CBPP President and former Office of Management and Budget (OMB) official, on Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins’ false claim that the Trump Administration cannot provide November SNAP benefits during the shutdown.
The Administration itself admits these reserves are available for use. It could have, and should have, taken steps weeks ago to be ready to use these funds. Instead, it may choose not to use them in an effort to gain political advantage.
Secretary Rollins’ claim that the Trump Administration is unable to deliver November SNAP benefits during a shutdown is unequivocally false. In fact, the Administration is legally required to use contingency reserves — billions of dollars that Congress provided for use when SNAP funding is inadequate that remain available during the shutdown — to fund November benefits for the 1 in 8 Americans who need SNAP to afford their grocery bill.
Also, the Administration could use its legal transfer authority — the same authority it already used to provide additional funds to WIC — to supplement the contingency reserves, which by themselves are not enough to fund families’ full benefits.
My Conversation with Grok
Mish: Is this claim correct?: “Trump Administration Is Legally Required to Provide SNAP in Shutdown.”
Grok: Yes, the claim is correct. The Trump administration is legally required to provide Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits during the ongoing government shutdown, contrary to its public statements suggesting otherwise. This obligation stems from SNAP’s status as an “appropriated entitlement” under the Food and Nutrition Act of 2008 (as amended), which mandates benefits for eligible individuals regardless of annual appropriations lapses. The administration’s assertions that funding will inevitably run out by November 1, 2025—potentially affecting 42 million recipients—misrepresent available legal mechanisms and contingency funds that must be utilized.
Legal Requirements
Entitlement to Benefits: Eligible individuals are entitled to SNAP benefits by law (7 U.S.C. § 2011 et seq.). If funds are insufficient for full allotments, the Secretary of Agriculture must prorate benefits proportionally across all recipients, not halt them entirely. This process has never been invoked in prior shutdowns.
Reserves: SNAP’s contingency fund holds ~$6 billion in multi-year reserves (from FY2024–2025 appropriations), covering ~75% of November’s ~$8 billion cost. Law requires these to be released “when regular funding runs short” (Agriculture Appropriations Acts, e.g., P.L. 118-42).
Permanent Appropriation Debate: Some interpretations (e.g., via Food and Nutrition Act) view SNAP as having a permanent appropriation, exempt from shutdowns like Social Security. GAO has ruled similarly for entitlements.
State Processing: States must continue accepting and processing SNAP applications during shutdowns (SNAP regulations, 7 C.F.R. § 273.2). Federal reimbursements for admin costs (50% in FY2026) can draw from contingencies.
Key Legal and Factual Basis
SNAP benefits are not purely discretionary spending; they are entitlements backed by permanent or multi-year authorities that survive short-term funding gaps like shutdowns.
In summary, while full funding requires congressional action to end the shutdown, the administration must deploy contingencies and prorate if needed—making full stoppage illegal. This aligns with nonpartisan analyses from CBPP, FRAC, and Reuters, outweighing administration spin. For updates, monitor USDA’s site or state human services departments.
Legalities? Who Cares?
If the shutdown goes on long enough nothing gets paid. The very last item on the list would be interest on debt.
Meanwhile, legalities are for mere mortals, not those who view themselves as above the law.
Day 23 of the Shutdown Recap
The Hill notes Democrats vote down bill to pay some federal workers amid shutdown
The Senate on Thursday failed to approve a bill which would pay some federal employees, including service members, as the government shutdown stretches into its fourth week.
The plight of military families has been central to the GOP’s shutdown strategy, and Republican leaders hoped to put Democrats on the spot with the bill sponsored by Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.).
The upper chamber will not take up the House-passed funding bill to reopen the federal government on Thursday. Senate Republicans are divided over whether they should negotiate with Democrats on Affordable Care Act subsidies, the crux of the funding fight.
Reuters reports White House warns government shutdown could lead to holiday travel meltdown
The Trump administration and Republican leaders in Congress on Thursday warned that flight disruptions will increase as a government shutdown enters its 23rd day and controllers miss their first full paycheck.
Some 13,000 air traffic controllers and about 50,000 Transportation Security Administration officers must work without pay during the government shutdown. Controllers will miss their first full paycheck on Tuesday.“We fear there will be significant flight delays, disruptions and cancellations in major airports across the country this holiday season,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said. “If Democrats continue to shut down the government, they will also be shutting down American air travel.”
Democrats reject the contention that they are responsible and say it is President Donald Trump and Republicans who refuse to negotiate.Air traffic control has become a flashpoint in the debate over the shutdown with both parties blaming the other. Unions and airlines have urged a quick end to the standoff.
“Football fans: if you are stuck in the airport this weekend while your favorite team is about to kick off, you can blame the Democrats,” Johnson said.
The FAA is about 3,500 air traffic controllers short of targeted staffing levels and many had been working mandatory overtime and six-day weeks even before the shutdown.
Not Completely Off the Table
In other unrelated but amusing news, the Hill notes Trump-Putin meeting ‘not completely off the table’.
“A meeting between these two leaders is not completely off the table,” press secretary Karoline Leavitt said. “But we want to make sure there’s a tangible, positive outcome out of that meeting.”
This is one of those Schrödinger’s Trump observations where something is simultaneously on and off the table.

Here’s a snappy idea from the past
Let them eat store brand.
The touching photo of SNAP-mom and daughter making smart food choices is a fake, of course. I could be negative and say this particular instance is 100% propaganda to influence YOU. Maybe the choice was entirely random. Who knows.
However, how here many noticed, or cared enough to point it out?
Now, imagine the same deception occurs constantly. 24×7. 365 days a year. Everything you see, read, and hear is a craftily carefully constructed message to influence YOU.
Picture this — parents are walking through the grocery store with their kid, and the kid starts rolling on the floor, screaming at the top of his lungs and crying, when he doesn’t get what he wants. The more the kid is consoled, the more he acts up.
The Republicans are now in the authority position, like the parents. And you know who the bratty kid is. The majority of the people in the country believe those parents should have the authority position right now, seen in their votes. Deal with it.
Black Friday and Christmas is coming…..😂😂😂
Here is a list of restaurants accepting SNAP/EBT
Building dependency one fat ass at a time.:
Los Angeles: Subway, Jack in the Box, Louisiana Famous Fried Chicken and Fish Market, Domino’s Pizza, Denny’s Restaurant, Wok on the Wild Side, Wendy’s, El Pollo Loco, Del Taco, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Pizza Hut, and more
Chicago: BJ’s Market & Bakery, Caribbean Jerk’s Palace III, Doughboy’s Chicago, Firehouse Bakery & Grill, JJ Fish and Chicken, Ocean Wave Soul & Seafood, S2 Express Grill, and more
Boston: Fresh Food Generation, Merengue Express, Vejigantes Restaurant, Stokes BBQ, La Parada Dominican Kitchen, Merengue Restaurant
Detroit: A Eagles Coney Island, Embassy Coney Island, ERR’Thang Smoked, Heavenly Chicken and Waffles, Market Fresh Deli, Sheeba Express, Subway, The Congregation Detroit, YumVillage
Brooklyn: Jam It Bistro, Brain Food Deli & Smart Kitchen, Roseli Chinese Restaurant, Memphis Seoul, IHOP, Ocean Eats, Lady Chow Kitchen
This hits hard if you’re an absolute imbecile. You don’t seem to worry how farmers, oil and ranchers use their subsidies but worry about private businesses accepting SNAP. In many ways, this is efficient because the food is mass produced and as cheap as possible.
Let me say this clearly.
NO one on welfare should eat better than people who pay taxes!
Is that clear enough for you?
The original food support programs provided raw ingredients, cheese etc, which supported farmers.
SNAP EBT supports mass production of crappy foot.
There shouldn’t be susidies for *anything*. We should go back to the government that Benjamin Franklin envisioned.
I have no problem with incentivizing good behavior and rewarding work. A subsidy is the opposite of a tax. It encourages more of the same.
Millions of hungry Americans but DJT will get his $300M pretty princess ballroom!
Let them eat cake!
It’s privately funded, not tax dollars, so what are you complaining about?
Corruption. We now have billionaires (who were given huge tax breaks) sending cash directly to Trump for his own pet projects, which he pursues without any form of congressional oversight. Do you think this is how the founding fathers intended our government to function? That’s a rhetorical question: it’s NOT how they intended our government to function. The administration is supposed to enact the will of the people, which is represented by Congress (the legislative branch.)
You should see the legal rigamarole in my town when we want to renovate our library for $2 million dollars. There is far, far more public input and oversight in my town government (population 12,000) than there is in Washington, DC right now, where Trump has torn down 1/3 of our White House without any permission, advice, consent, or feedback from ANYONE.
Frankly, how can you be so ignorant? Honestly. I’m ashamed that people like you call yourself American, when you show such absolute ignorance of our laws and traditions. How has our educational system manage to fail you so completely? That is OUR White House. Not Trump’s. WTF is wrong with you?
The educational system failed ‘you’ because of liberals taking over and bastardizing curriculum and teacher proficiency. Pick any measure except ‘availability of school lunches’ and ‘school drop-out rate.’
I think you may be over reacting here Phil. For Gods sake we currently have events outside under a tent on the white house lawn. And its not like any of our presidents have not spent money with their upgrades of the white house. I think Obama put in a basketball court. I guess that was needed?
Founding fathers? Can you at least include NGOs in there Phil? I can guarantee you the founding fathers did not think a foreign government could legally create and entity inside America and have more influence over America than any politician or the American people… Nor did the founding fathers think those same entities could over rule the American people by over ruling Congress and have these NGOs fly people from 100 countries to the Mexican border and then get flown all over the United States at yours mine and ours expense.
I also don’t think the founding fathers thought a different NGO could create politicians out of know where with zero experience running a lemonade stand and be foreign born to become the mayor of NYC
But hey, lets worry about redecorating the white house.
Yes, and OUR Whitehouse will now have space to host gatherings of foreign and domestic guests for negotiated discussions and camaraderie. What’s wrong with that?
thank you. I was going to point that out but to some here everything that is wrong in the entire galaxy is Trumps fault
Brain washing/mind control by the liberal media. Sadly, the same occurs on the other side. Truth lies somewhere in the middle, but most people lack the ability to think beyond their biases.
The middle, yes. Where I always was. But the middle got destroyed a long time ago . And its the left that has gone to far, not the right
They still don’t get it. They , the far left and all the democrats that let all this go one without any push back on their side are just as much to blame. And now they want to whine about it.
To late, suck it up and move on. If we can survive who ever the fuck it was running the country the last 4 years because it certainly wasn’t Joe Biden then we can survive Trump.
My ‘somewhere’ varies–a pendulum of sorts. Imagine the US of 1945 supporting genocide, or NAZIs?
Nowadays, Democrats need a dependent society to get elected. We let them take over education and corrupt our children. Heck, we even watched Sesame Street and Mr. Rodgers with them. All part of modern brain washing.
This hits hard if you’re a moron. According to whom? Same guy who said East Wing won’t be touched? Who are the donors? Where is the accounting? What work was done to ensure that the demo and souls ours confirm to lawful practices?
If you don’t think there will be a code inspector for that project, you need to seek therapy.
Frankly, my dear, I don’t care about your democrap talking points. I’m tired of seeing lard-asses in the supermarket with their FREE food, which is never the store brand that I’m buying.
Crony Capitalism will fix everything. When the Food Processing conglomerates see their sales of junk food drop by 10%-15% as a result of food stamp cuts, the cuts will be restored. Food Stamps and section 8 are not a subsidy for the people. They are subsidies for the conglomerates, and landlords to get above market value for their product.
The real fear for the food processors is that RFK will have an impact on junk food. Taking junk food off food stamps will be a great first step to reducing healthcare costs.
Junk food will get healthier with RFK and will no longer be junk food. There will be healthier snacks made available by the conglomerates.
Dream on. The profit margin on crispy-crunchy fresh green beans and Cheez-its will ensure processed crap is the staple diet of the US.
Don’t worry Illegals, undocumented, migrants will rec there food stamps on time.
Come on now, there are a lot of legal long time american citizens, black, white, hispanic and every one else and certainly our seniors on a mostly fixed income that need some help. I have no problem paying out of my own pocket to feed people.
On illegals, Step 1 is to get the criminals out. Unfortunately the left wing america last haters do not want that, and some people here whine on & virtue signal from afar about it but criminals go first and let ICE do its job on them.
ICE does need to stop these raids that just go after anyone they think is illegal as there is a lot of lets call it collateral damage.
Lets be honest. The Federal government does not have the resources nor an agreed upon bi partisan plan to implement to even begin how to clean up this mess of illegal aliens and so called migrants. illegals have been coming into my neck of the woods since the 1980s. This is nothing new. But the Biden Admin & NGOs put this on steroids and all you democrats and liberal left wing nut jobs denied it and ignored for the last 4 years. Democrats and liberals just do not reproduce. They dont make babies anymore so the only way to win elections is to bring in illegals and cheat and lie with mail in balloting. Deny it all you want, its a fact.
The border is the main reason why you got Trump 2.0
So as Mish would say, lets deal with the current administration
Well, its going to take a huge investment of resources , and of human capital; IE workers and a whole lot of money to even begin cleaning this mess up. But I am getting ahead of myself because you have Democrat politicians that feel the so called migrant that came in the last 4 years and is getting free shit to this day is as important and or more important than a citizen of this country. Until that changes nothing changes.
The US needs to face the fact that Democrats depend on a dependent class to get elected.
That is, the more dependent people are on government the easier it is to control them, and their votes.
It is true “american citizens, black, white, hispanic etc…. need some help….”
The key is how to do it WITHOUT making them dependent.
One example: a retired friend on social security has a problem making ends meet. Now, he grows a lot of his own food in a backyard garden, and cans/preserves what he can.
Give a person a rotor tiller, seeds, and Youtube videos and he/she/it can feed himself, and others.
Good points sir, I agree. And I am glad your retired friend is in good health but you can’t expect a lot of seniors to do that but I agree with your point.
America needs to be more like Japan on how they take care of and hold there elders in high regard
It is all about priorities. And it isn’t just seniors. These problems have been festering for 50+ years. Eg. Schools and colleges pride themselves on their sports teams. I won’t comment on why. But they do this while the rest of the student body has fat rolls and ADHD.
We have allowed idiots to take control.
Let’s take Michelle Obama’s school lunch program–Let Them Eat Arugula.
Imagine if she’d found funding for experimental schools where the kids grew their own food, and cooked it. It might take one hour per day of class time, but the kids would benefit from exercise, self-reliance etc. Then, spread the program across the US.
Frankly, I’m tired of the dumb fux who run the country.
It’s about healthcare. Young doctors in the UK, between one year to ten experience, are on strike. Their “union”, BMA, demand jobs, housing, higher salaries and benefits. BMA will stop ER, OR, diagnostics and regular treatments. Older docs will replace them. Young doctors are 50% of the work force. There are not enough jobs for them. Most of them don’t have a steady job. 30K applications on 10K jolts. They strike bc they have the “power”: 2/3 of the 1st year grad are unemployed. English docs are dead stem cells. They drive Starmer crazy.
Brexit has consequences. Almost all of them negative.
Big Brexit fans. Trump was too. A big hint on how genuinely stupid Brexit was. Under conservative rule, the UK failed to expand their medical specialty training system, so they have plenty of residents, and not enough slots for them to be trained in medical specialties. They used to hire specialists trained in the EU. Because they were part of it. Harder to do now because they ain’t in it no more. So they hire specialists from the medical boondocks and continue to fail to train their own. Same thing is happening here, and it is about to get worse.
Are you from the UK? just curious.
Because while yeah there are some negatives to Brexit , one of several reasons why Brexit was voted on was to control their border, and have a say in who comes in, like giving a preference to skilled workers instead of free loading so called migrants and those that do not want to assimiliate into the european culture.
You have no country without a border. Leftists do not want borders and I cannot speak for the UK but in America the Democrats do not care about borders anymore and have let the far left nut jobs take over their party.
Britain was happy importing Asian/African doctors by the horde, after smart British youth decided they’d have a better life working in the financial industry than in a health factory.
It’s not about healthcare! It’s about moron politicians who do not understand CONSEQUENCES of their decisions. We see it again and again. The US is the prime example.
Maybe it’s time to revisit the 1981 Attorney General opinion which said the Federal Government “must” shut down in the absence of appropriations.
Prior that time, the government just kept on running under an assumed continuation…
Anyone want to make a bet SNAP benefits will continue on Nov 1?
A lot of bi partisan posturing and a lot of emoting by our residents
Do SNAP cards allow betting as well as lottery tickets?
‘Betting,’ of course is sarcastic, but SNAP/EBT etc are full of fraud. The top of the list (IMHO) using cards at restaurants.
LOL! I hear ya. We should be trying to cut out or cut down on the fraud, not just a broad attack on the benefits themselves.
And I still have not seen anyone that wants to take that bet lol
My state is planning to cover the SNAP cost on its own using our state budgetary excess. Such a wild contrast compared to the feds! And this is from the state that has the absolute worst return on federal tax dollars… We send something like $7 in taxes to Washington for every $1 we receive in services.
The ratios here sadden me. There is so much waste going to people with far more money. And to support genocide and other industrial murder. This should be the last thing anyone tries to cut. What a sick society. No wonder we have the pig politicians we have. Mencken was right.
Remodeling the White House is more important than SNAP.
Hakeem, stop bitching around, open the gov. No, Trump bs with us. He is playing golf and build a ballroom. Mamdani, a Muslim Bros, on Nov 1st, Allah will rule NYC. Islam thrives when the poor starve. Mamdani isn’t a commie. Communist don’t believe in god. Commies warship the communist party. Shingle mums with children have to sell their body in order to feed their children. No SNAP from Allah !!
No tax dollars spent on the WH remodel, so it is non-news.
I love it when poor Americans starve!! – signed Satan
Mamdani will feed them.
I never received SNAP and have not starved yet. I’m 80, there is still time.
“if you’re going to get into the mud with a pig, just remember that the pig actually likes being in mud” … not sure who said it, but I’ve always enjoyed it.
Trump angry at Canada when it presented via ad all of Ronald Reagan’s statements against tariffs.
No more Canada for you!
All Canada negotiations off!
A war between the US and China will stop SNAP.
Why?
Everyone will be dead.
I am so sick of Trump’s lies.
puke !
I miss the days when the lies consisted only of us being told that Joe Biden was totally healthy and the laptop was Russian disinformation. oh, the good old days …
Don’t forget “the border is not open”
I don’t know if they said “not open”. I know Majorkas said “secure” which means — nobody gets in who we don’t want to come in. And so yes, the border was secure.
It was NOT secure. They used an ‘app’ to enter. A total farce that only morons believed.
They were letting randos in, people with no documentation whatsoever.
Point to the part on the doll where old man Biden touched you. We will get justice for you.
Legally the gov transfer SNAP money to the states. SNAP clogging can cause riots
and starvation. To prevent it state governors will do whatever they can to take care of their SNAP recipients. Thus Gavin, Pritzker and Hochul and their state senators and congressmen improve their chances to be reelected. But what will happen if Chuck and Hakeem prolong the shutdown, prolong states support ==> until it stop !
I think what you’re posing is the question of who’s going to care about politics when there’s no food on the table. I honestly think that’s what this shut down comes down to. and I have no idea what the answer is.
It’s about healthcare, shelter, insurance and SNAP benefits. Shingle mums with children get the most. They collect about 40% of SNAP. In NYS 4 person household collect $800/ month. It’s a way of life. Trump isn’t the father of their children. Cutting SNAP and other benefits is a systemic change. Let their father pay. Number #1 item on SNAP list are soft drinks. Less state benefits ==> more apt vacancies.
If they don’t know who the father is-how can he pay? The joke around my friends was that Father’s Day was the most confusing day of the year. Of course, this talk inflames the collectivist mind, but it remains true in many cases.
I don’t disagree with you at all. I was merely referring to the pr war.
Like Jamestown and Donner Pass?
The biggest benefactors of SNAP are American farmers and ranchers. Conservatives are their own wore enemies. Decades ago all they bitched about was a man in a house getting food benefits, most of it for children, was also eating the food and watching TV. Imagine, they had to get up to change the channel. So conservatives regulated him out of the house/apartment. Now you want him back. Hilarious. You guys are a scream.
USA basically only experiences mostly peaceful protests not riots over the last decade. It isn’t like the states don’t possess funds they can move around in the interim. Hot potato so they will be made right once the Federal government is funded by Congress. Perhaps instead of SNAP where there appears to be a lot of abuse in the system Federal & State soup kitchens. For all the children free breakfast & lunch at school with a sack lunch to take home for dinner.
“ Schrödinger’s Trump observations” pretty funny
Gov debt: $38T. General Account: $908B. Gov receipts up from capital gains and tariffs. Since the shutdown outlays are down. The budget deficit will be smaller. Since CA and NY have more people on SNAP and the highest cost of living, cutting SNAP by 15%/20% will hurt their shingle mums with kids the most. Thanksgiving is a month from today.
CA also has low state taxes for people making SNAP eligible income, usually $0. Alabama would charge about 5% state income tax for a similar earner. California should be dead last on your sympathy list. They are fifth largest economy in the world partially because they are “best in class” among states at (indirectly) funneling Federal tax dollars from other states into their coffers.
People on SNAP are governors “assets”. Trump might force state governors, like Gavin, Pritzker and NY gov Hochul, to pay the SNAP gap, in order to prevent chaos, riots and starvation in their states. Thus Trump, during the shutdown, might transfers the SNAP gap to the states. In emergency CA econ is a cushion, a redundancy.
California and most other Democratic states pay more in federal taxes than they receive. https://usafacts.org/articles/which-states-contribute-the-most-and-least-to-federal-revenue/
This has been common knowledge for many years.
I said indirectly, and stop pretending I didn’t.
They win more Federal government contracts than just about anybody. It’s interesting how many Federal government contracts favor minorities and … surprise! … California is ~50% minorities, as per 2020 US census.
So many are upvoting the idea of restricting SNAP purchases to potatoes, beans, rice and the like. But many destitute people in my vicinity are homeless and have no way to cook, unless they start a fire in a barrel. That is why here in CA you can buy fast food and prepared food with food stamps. It is all a mess.
Life’s a beach and then you die. [shrug]
Good point. Maybe we need plain old soup kitchens. Businesses won’t like their bennies cut. But f em.
More importantly, there’s so much more to cut ahead of this. I’m fine with reform. But there’s so much else to cut. This is close to the last thing to “cut”.
SNAP is $100 billion a year, about double the entire Department of Energy’s annual budget. That’s definitely not chump change.
How many ‘homeless’ get SNAP/EBT cards?
Answer: no one knows, or is telling!
The AI response:
“Approximately 41 million people participate in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), but specific data on how many of these individuals are homeless is not readily available.”
Now, why doesn’t the government know? Perhaps the number is so low, it can’t be released.
A list of the 25 states that want to cut it off?
States and abbreviations affected by potential SNAP cuts…
Democratic Governors (14 states): CA, CO, HI, IL, MA,MN,NV, NJ, NM, NY, OR, PA, VA & WI.
Republican Governors (11 states): AK, AR, FL, GA, IN, MS, MO, NH, OK, SC & TX.
per Google AI Overview.
VA has a republican governor.
Heres where my area is at. 630 am driving for work. Big deer hit in other lane. Came back 30 min later. Gone. Not pulled to the side of the road. I think the guy in front of me turned around and harvested it. The community burned a few years ago That community is still suffering.
Went to try a little Indian restaurant last weekend. They had advertised on fb to come out for diwali. Free food Couple came did not look like the type to be into Indian food/ community or festival. Ate real fast just looking at the food and bolted. It was just odd.
I love venison!
I can imagine that the Democrats are rubbing their hands together. Get ready for more rhetoric. They see the mid-term votes moving their way.
First of all is SNAP recipient numbers 45 million people or families? So if 45 million people receive SNAP for themselves it’s far different from a person receiving SNAP to feed 3, 4 , 5 or ore people. That is my question, this might be paid to 45 million people but the hungry will be 100 million people or more.
One can easily say corporations benefit from SNAP also, subsidising profits of all businesses, $38 trillion in debt, $1 trillion increase in 70 days, yet they want everyone to believe the deficit is less than $2 trillion.
I watched a minority family with multiple kids enter 7-11 all ten and under and load the counter with junk food and pop at 2am. And paid with the magic card. I was like wtf!
Why do you have to say “minority”, Are you a bigot, who cares what their background is, they are human beings, they are obviously victims of the rotting system. One should pray they never qualify for SNAP not attack those who do. If the country wasn’t so corrupt one wouldn’t need support.
Come on, Jack, Black Minorities SHOUT FROM THE ROOFTOPS that they are minorities subject to the whims of Privileged Whites. It is ALL bullshit and you know it and you are an idiot to make such comments.
I am Black, I am SUCCESSFUL and my best Friends are White. So fok uff!
Shut up moron. Clearly you have no idea what I mean. Who cares what you are, no human being is black or white. If ya wanna be labelled good for you, otherwise you f off. My point being what has MINORITY got to do with the point? He can speak about what he saw but not label people, if they were light skinned he wouldn’t say I saw a family of white people would he. Stop kissing ass you lackey.
here’s what minority has to do with it- pattern recognition. It’s not racism or bigotry, it’s pattern recognition.
Successful my ass, ya nothing but a lackey with chains & can’t even see discrimination in front of ya eyes.So what if ya black, so what if ya best friends are white. The fact you have to call people by colour shows ya brainwashed.
I bet they weren’t northeast Asian.
This country wasn’t based on handouts and illegitimacy (engendered by welfare}.You remove human dignity when the government is the Papa.
If they are deemed a success they are American, if they are poor they’re a minority. Fools
You don’t know jack, Jack.
37% of the beneficiaries of snap are white. A high percentage of snap beneficiaries are children. And the biggest beneficiaries of snap benefits are farmers and ranchers.
He was just trying to portray a message that no light skinned people are on SNAP. You also noticed this with ya comment. Yet all these commentors seem to be too stupid or too bigoted to notice the slight of hand propaganda. They soon reveal themselves.
yeah ABC 20/20 30 years ago Hugh Downs said “More white people get welfare than black people”. Baba WaWa said with astonishment “I never knew that”. Well DUH there are way more white people. Pure manipulative reporting. Do the % of whites getting SNAP, and the % others getting it, see what THAT says.
I HIGHLY doubt Trump will keep this up. He won’t want this to ruin his image. President Starves the Elderly and Babies.
Yeah, I can see that… headline news!
His image? The whole world thinks he’s a corrupt evil dumb ass, his image can’t be any worse.
You gots sum kinder thang for Whites?
What the hell are talking about David ya retard. Say something that makes sense or stop trying to talk to me. Speak English, what is ya point? Especially after ya stupid comment in defence of bigoted rjhonson. You say ya successful too, you absolute liar, clearly ya just a infantile keyboard warrior with nothing better to do.
Who’s white anyway, the Grifter in Chief is orange, a wanna be tanned guy, he himself is clearly unhappy with his skin colour. If you were not so stupid you would see I am against any label, how is that some kind of thing for any shade. I see human beings you degenerate.
Just another thought
are you prepared to financially care for all your elderly/disabled/irresponsible relatives?
are you donating enough to your private charities that are to assume care of these people?
are you prepared to say, eff the farmers and the backdoor SNAP subsidy
have you ever lived in a country where there is no safety net?
I already did part 1 for almost 15 years now im an alcohlic with ptsd.
With no kids so im just up creek
“are you prepared to financially care for all your elderly/disabled/irresponsible relatives?”
I hope you appreciate the irony of your statement. If normal working people can’t afford to support their own families right now, why are we making them support elderly strangers?
If they can’t afford to take care of their own, how is asking the government, who will simply tax and steal money out of people’s pockets, to pay for others be better?
So much winning
and this is after all the cuts and the shutdown and the tariffs
The U.S. national debt has surged past $38 trillion, according to the U.S. Treasury Department, just two months after surpassing previous forecasts to reach $37 trillion in August. This means the federal debt rose by $1 trillion in a little over two months, which the Peter G. Peterson Foundation calculates is the fastest rate of growth outside the pandemic.
Yes but the hidden inflation is still destroying the debt quicker!
Entitlements make anyone who works for a living a fractional slave.
So tell me what is the difference between entitlements & charity? I’ll tell you shall I, NOTHING but the fact using the word entitlements makes it look a perk, a gift. You work & pay taxes so when you need support you get it.
Basically the church leaders of America went to the government yelling at them they could not keep up with the needs of the poor. So when your preacher is yelling at you that you are going to burn in hell if you don’t do something for the poor, you do something for the poor. This dates back to Colonial America as we basically operated under English law, and they had welfare by law in Great Britain.
Grow up with ya nonsensical stories. Ya so stupid, the point is as I said it, a societal contract was created for all citizens & for many reasons as Mish already alluded too. Citizens would work & pay tax, the tax will then be used for many things, one of which is to pay citizens in time of need, no different to insurance. You don’t have to make up some religious reason cuz ya politicians are devils & care nothing for religion. This was done to stop violence, theft, riots cuz a human mind will do anything to eat when starving, again as Mish alluded too.
Great Britain didn’t have welfare until after WW2, I should know cuz I’m British. Welfare is a new thing & you talk about colonial times. It’s British law not English law by the way. You Yanks keep calling it England but England is just one of four countries that make up Britain.
Who gives a shit what your insignificant countries’s names are. You’ve had poor laws for centuries, so the colonies had poor laws.
duh Jack, entitlements are tax money extracted by force, charity is voluntary.
Can we at least agree to cut off Israel and Argentina before we cut off Americans?
We opened a swap line with Argentina. That money was not “free” as Democrats are claiming.
It might as well be when they go belly up.
Pesos! Big peso dividend checks before the next election.
Common sense at last, And I have no skin in the game!
These comments are both disgusting and make me wish I could filter comments from shit breathed 60+ year olds. A good chunk of people here not currently working themselves and then calling poor people lazy is a real riot when nobody can get a job anymore.
My idea: The unemployed can’t vote from now on. However, this includes molding retired people increasingly weighing down the system. Let people who work and contribute to society call the shots.
People can downvote this all they want knowing I’m right. If you don’t like freeloaders why don’t we start with the biggest group of them in America (baby boomers)? Why should everyone’s future go to paying for unlimited Medicare? You can get a job can’t you? Or is that complaint just for lazy “urban types”?
There are *plenty* of jobs where I live. Employers are practically begging people to fill them.
Plenty of jobs? What’s the wage is the question, how many hours, what are the conditions. I got unlimited jobs for people, I just don’t pay.
Minimum wage is $16.50/hr, with $20/hr minimum for fast food workers, and $30/hr minimum for hotel workers if you are willing to drive as far as the county line.
Better than $ZERO, without those government handouts.
Where’s that Jeff? Please show me a land of plenty. Oh! Let me guess, McJobs for everyone because we live in westernized India now?
Orange County, California. You can work a minimum wage job at L.A. county hotels for $62,400/yr.
So you get laid off because of AI. Or something else. Now you cant vote? Bad idea.
So nobody can get a job so no one can vote?
Your 1st and 2nd paragraph are a bit contradictory.
Bipolar?
For the illiterate: I’m just making the ideas other comments have apply to the safely retired baby boomers in these comments crying about minorities because that money needs to go to fossil care instead. If that’s the world they want so bad, they should be where they belong in it. At the bottom.
I live in Irvine, California as a renter, with my wife, spending $50K/yr. I have ACA premium subsidies, but other than that, everything is paid out of pocket, living in one of the top ten most expensive places in the country in a 2 bedroom apartment. What’s your excuse for “how poor you are?” I bet your household makes more than mine spends, net, living in a much lower cost area.
That’s great Jeff, now tell me how much you had to pay for college back in the day. Tell me how you got that great rent. Because I know exactly how it is: baby boomers got it rosey, set themselves for life, and pulled up the ladder behind them. You were in your 20s back when people could actually go get a job out of highschool and feed a family of 4. Back when you could actually pay for college in 10-15 years. That’s gone now. Congrats on being set when most people aren’t.
I agree with you. But don’t play the “I’m so poor” game unless your household makes less than my household’s yearly spending. My rent is $30K/yr, BTW, and I wouldn’t exactly call that great. My biggest spending line item after rent is health care premium payments (about $4K out of pocket), in spite of a ridiculous $17,000/yr ACA premium subsidy.
I paid zero for college for 5 degrees in two different countries. I worked, studied, applied for grants/scholarships/fellowships, etc. When other kids partied, I worked. I not only kept myself current in my field–I led the pack.
Along the way I renovated six houses BY MYSELF. I went without luxuries and saved as much as I could and invested. Even today, I buy 2nd hand cars and look for bargains.
I have paid a great deal in taxes of all types. Frankly, I am tired of seeing it wasted.
Nature will resolve the issue, they’ll be dead soon enough, you don’t resolve a wrong with a bigger wrong. Not that voting matters, voting is the biggest scam that the world can’t seem to grasp.
I’m retired. I pay a ton of federal, state and local taxes.
Many here don’t HAVE to work.
And yet they get to suck off the firehose of pension money that doesn’t exist! All paid for by working people of course.
Your generation has some valid grievances. That doesn’t mean you should not act like an adult. You still didn’t answer whether your household makes more than my household’s yearly spending, most likely because you can’t whine that your household brings in less.
What is ‘work’ in your model? For example, does it apply only to employees. Does it include grandma providing childcare to her grandkids? Does it include my 79-year-old friend who is now on social security, but plays the piano at ritzy hotels for 20+ hours a week?
And if someone worked for 50-odd years, and went without luxuries in order to save money to retire, why would you want to punish that?
In my case, I retired at 58, by choice. I adjusted my lifestyle and kept working on things I wanted to work on.
How, exactly, do you measure ‘contribution to society’? A lot of the people who receive welfare spend their days in front of the TV/social media. Explain their contribution?
Maine instituted minor requirements on food stamps. Usage subsequently dropped 80% Tell you a VAST majority is fraud
Lies
Yes, fraud and lies.
Screw em. Get a job.
Screw you & get a life
off topic but what’s up with Trump saying officially he’s gonna f*** Netanyahu.
https://www.jpost.com/israel-news/article-871463
Asking cuz I am low on popcorn and need to know if I need 1 or 2 cases for the show.
Bonus question: Now that Epstein is dead, who’s gonna record this event?
Reply to Off topic. So Trump didn’t say it officially, instead this was a quoute from a “senior American source”. See, I went to the article you posted. It doesn’t even say the “American source” is a Trump official.
Most of the leaks tend to be accurate but we’ll see what happens. It’s only a matter of time. Trump ratings at new lows, he may have to feed the MTG/Tucker base some red meat to climb back up.
Clearly Trump would be the f***ee. Catcher, not pitcher.
Screwed by a taco. Wonder if it includes hot sauce. Lol
Trump desperately wants to one up Obama so he really wants the Noble Peace Prize but until he gets one, he will be a lesser man then O. If Trump needs to throw Bibi under the bus to get a peace prize, I’m sure he’ll do it.
I’ll go to the local trophy maker and buy him the Noble Prize.
Make sure it is 10k gold plated, suitably tacky for Trump’s nuevo riche tastes.
Nouveau riche has a French origin. I wonder if Trump knows that?
It’s an unofficial threat because if this falls apart, and with the Russia attack on Ukraine being no closer to resolution despite Trump chickening out to Putin numerous times, then Trump’s chance at winning that desired Nobel Peace prize next year goes out the window.
Hamas has already violated the agreement by refusing to turn in its weapons. Netanyahu will give Trump lip service but do what is necessary to present Hams from regaining control over Gaza.
Understand that the money the US gives to Israel to buy munitions back from the USA is just a bribe to support our MIC and keep Congress happy. If Trump cuts that money, he is just hurting the USA, MIC employment and Congressional payments from the MIC.
Israel has also been expanding its weapon manufacturing capabilities over the last couple of years, especially after Biden held up the 2000lb bombs for a while. The question of import is where might Israel be getting the raw weapons materials from?
Lol…go look at what Trump has done to farmers, ranchers, and well just about everyone else. And I hate to break your bubble, but no matter what Bibi does against Hamas, it will be temporary and short lived. There is 5000 years of historical violence in that region and I doubt anything changes anytime soon.
Change will happen when that region stops believing in all that religious nonsense or 80% end up killing themselves.
Watch this Mish, the compassionate one https://x.com/ArmageddonProse/status/1980948293388579094 In the primitive old days before LBJ, fathers worked to feed their families. Now they are entitled to be supported and fed by you working suckers. In the bad old days, charities, soup kitchens, churches fed the hungry. Now Uncle Sap has taken their place not only feeding but housing, providing medical care etc. The difference was in the old days the charity, alms giving etc was voluntary, Now it is done with money confiscated from the productive and handed over to parasites (which describes most welfare kings and queens). Not only do they think they should get everything for free, but what isn’t given by the govt. they steal/shoplift. The welfare state is the downfall of America (and Europe, Oz etc) . Contrast it to the safety, work & study ethic, law abiding countries esp. in Asia.
In Colonial America, communities were required by law to maintain systems for helping the poor. I’m old enough to remember visiting a relative who was living in a county poor house. Smelled like urine.
Here in CA, you can only have $3k in assets to qualify for Medical and food stamps BUT with the exception that you can own 1 house and 1 car, of any value.
This means you can own a brand new Mercedes $200k car and a $multi-million house but still qualify if you have no monthly cash flow. Say your kids pay the bills. This is dumb exception.
This scam is practiced regularly by certain ethnic groups. Wherever government is giving out something for free and there is loophole, it is a certainty that there will be a subset of people that will take eadvantage.
This is why government should be out of the charity/support business and such support should return to religious groups, community orgs and other non-government groups.
Government cheese drone drops.
As God is my witness, I thought cheeses could fly.
Oh what a friend we have in cheeses.
In the 1950s, my Dad used to help the local sheriff deliver commodities – cheese, powdered milk, peanut butter, etc. – to poor families. His mother was blind, and a widow (Spanish Flu in 1919) with 5 children.
Debasement of the dollar (AKA inflation) is caused by the Federal Reserve and the Treasury. You can thank them for prices that are 30% higher than 4 years ago.
Inflation is not caused by SNAP recipients, immigrants, or workers asking for raises (to name a few scapegoats).
people who consume but don’t produce create demand but not supply. More immigrants also increases the demand side but not necessarily supply. Not just for food and other products but housing etc.
Done correctly, Immigrants increase both the demand and supply. The problem, is sudden shocks, like when Biden let in 10+ million random people (some here to work, some not) effectivelf overnight. All that did was create massive price inflation due to incredible demand and little to no increase in supply from 2020 through 2023.
Most people on this board don’t produce a damn thing and are in the pondering and paper pushing business. So these people consume, but don’t produce, and according to your logic are inflationary. Give a thumbs up if you actually produce anything.
I’m reminded of a story that sounds like it came from “The Onion”, but it was real.
“Workers should not ask for big pay rises, to try and stop prices rising out of control, the Bank of England governor has told the BBC.”
https://www.bbc.com/news/business-60206564
The very entity that actually caused the inflation tells the working class to stop causing inflation!
Whip Inflation Now
The BoE have a large proportion of the responsibility for the inflation we have, its only transistors after all /S.
Imo the fed is handed a problem. The cause of inflation arises from congresses actions.
This is the difference between fiscal policy and monetary policy. The Fed/Treasury conducts monetary policy, but they have to work within the fiscal policy decided by the executive and legislative branches. So things like the Inflation Reduction Act, which actually increased inflation, was a fiscal policy action that the Fed had to work with in their monetary policy framework. SNAP is another fiscal policy item along with anything not being paid because of the shutdown. The Fed’s policy decisions are a major part of the nation’s finances, but they can’t control Congress.
fraud? Persons comb grocery store parking lots looking for someone to go in with them and buy their snap card at the rate of 50/50 The person with the snap card gets the cash the buyer gets a discount on eligible items. Also numerous small business (quick shops) sell made food i.e. chicken wings with sauce and fries with a snap card
To me what is fraudulent is that picture of a mom in the produce section smiling while her daughter puts fresh apples in a back. A more realistic picture would be of a fat slob in pajama bottoms, a tank top, and no bra with her 4 kids from 4 different dads trailing behind her while she screams at them to keep up. And her cart is loaded with diabetes water and Cheetos.

repugs will cave
Looks that way….but if it doesn’t what better way for Trump to cause an insurrection, call out the marines and cancel elections.

Strategic Monetary Gifting (not money MONOPOLISTICALLY created ONLY AS DEBT)
1) resolves all of these political stupidities
2) also resolves our stickiest and deepest economic problems like chronic inflation, chronic insufficient demand
3) enables us to reduce or eliminate several bureaucracies
4) cut taxes
5) enable libertarianism’s delusions to become the reality
Look at it. It won’t kill you.
I remember someone who said “what can’t be paid won’t be paid”.
42 million people in the USA get food stamps. That is 1/8 of the total population!
It’s time to whittle that number down significantly.
When you reward poor planning and life choices with never-ending government support, you just get more poor life choices, such as birthing mouths you cannot feed.
“When you reward poor planning and life choices with never-ending government support”
I feel exactly the same way about social security and medicare. These leeches should have planned better, we can’t afford to support these poor planning fools anymore.
What about those taking the Standard Deduction on their 1040s ?
S/S is not free, as it’s paid into, and those that don’t pay or enough, still receive the minimum. That’s how it’s been developed, and carried out. Not saying I agree, but it is what it is, but exceptions can be made. They could place limits on income as an example, to have restrictions of sorts (Formula TBD). Many of those that didn’t plan, you see working at your local grocery store etc. sometimes at emergency rooms for example. Can’t paint that picture with a braid brush imo.
It is as clear as shower door privacy glass to most people how the system really works. A select few know the actual truth as follows…..Crony Capitalism will fix everything. When the Food Processing conglomerates see their sales of junk food drop by 10%-15% as a result of food stamp cuts, the cuts will be restored. Food Stamps and section 8 are not a subsidy for the people. They are subsidies for the conglomerates, and landlords to get above market value for their product.
Your tune may change if your life hits some wall. Ayn Rand collected Social Security and Medicare benefits during her later years. Despite her well-known opposition to government welfare programs in her philosophy of Objectivism, records show that she received benefits from 1974 until her death in 1982. The use of these benefits has become a recurring point of debate and criticism regarding her views and actions.
Dude, on this topic you have a serious attitude problem. God don’t like ugly.
Whenever you subsidize something, it has to be strictly enforced. If not the system self implodes, and / or the legitimacy goes away.
The flaw in the program is the way it’s handled. Should be some strict rules in play to abide by, but no way around it.
1. A List of Qualified Products (TBD) Not on the List, you cannot Purchase the item, No exceptions.
2. A List of UnQualified Products (TBD) On the List, you Cannot Purchase the item, No exceptions.
3. Solid Proof of Qualification. (Qualification’s TBD).
4. Proof of Jobs applied for, with Whom you spoke, and the outcome. (Details TBD) must be provided on the First of Every Month, No exceptions.
5. An itemized list of what they own and how that plays into how much they get, will be determined. Each Month (List TBD). Spot checks at anytime can be done and failure to comply (TBD), is an immediate loss of benefits. Fail the inspection (Inspection TBD) is an immediate loss of benefits.
This is Taxpayers Money that the Taxpayers have worked there tail off to earn, and nobody should have to give some of there money to anyone that doesn’t deserve it, or are taking it but not needed, as they don’t qualify or could be gaming the system. Very, very tight and strict controls need to be put into place, whenever Taxpayers Money is utilized for anything imo.
Those that deserve to be helped, and with assistance will and should be helped, and those that don’t won’t be and shouldn’t be, quite honestly!
Love the idea of spot checks. Just the fear of being spot checked (with penalties) could cut fraud in half. Just 30 people with the full time job of “spot checker” in L.A. county could clean things up. Offer $500 for correctly ratting people ($50 penalty for being wrong) would accelerate the cleanup.
No need to “rat out” anyone. If the rules of the program are being followed correctly, and the TBD’s are on the side of stricter for starters, then they will rise to the surface soon enough. and then relook at it, if necessary by volume being turned up. Spot checks nearly always work, as rule breakers get lazy in due time.
Just so you know, I’m not the downvoter here.
You know that political PTB would never allow, the poor and downtrodden (often due to their own life choices) to suffer the “embarrassment” of being questioned about such issues!
that is because we were importing poverty every day for 4 years. And for many many years before that but those last 4 were on steroids
How many of those 42 million people were living in this country for the last 8 years?
Not saying we should not feed anyone just when you quote numbers like that lets take into consideration all the illegals that came here with nothing .
If there is a chance trump and republicans can hold the money back they will and blame the dems
It’s actually “blue states” – including MN – promising to stop SNAP payments, thinking that it will pressure republicans to bend to the Dems’ will on the budget impasse. Won’t work. Republicans be like “don’t throw me in the briar patch”.
South Carolina is a “blue state” too now? Or do you just talk exclusively out of your ass?
I didn’t say exclusively. California, NY, NJ, IL, MN, and red states too.
In the GOP, the need to remove all support from those who they despise and need the help is way more important than following laws they don’t like. Reality is proof of that claim.
Generally agree with JeffD on this: “SNAP, HUD, and ACA all push up prices enormously. They all need reformation.”
But I would end HUD, the FHA, Fannie, and Freddie as being counterproductive.
ACA needs serious reform for sure. Ideally it should go away too.
I view SNAP a bit differently. What is the cost of riots and theft?
We might have those without SNAP.
Rather than eliminate it, I would not allow purchases of soda, snacks, candy etc. Instead, I would allow purchase of soap and cleaning supplies. And I would try to cut fraud.
The idea is to create an incentive to work. And to that end, I would kill Child Tax Credits but remove all taxes on the first $X in income. X is some meaningful number I am not sure of, something like $35,000 per person.
Thanks for including the GSEs. Those are indeed the #1 source driving the overall cost of living living higher.
Concerning SNAP, There are 163 million people employed, which comes out to 140 million or so employed households. There are 42 million SNAP recipients. SNAP recipents now drive BMWs and live in high rent apartments. They need to isolate the destitute, and start phasing out benefits for the non-destitue over a multi-year period. Just freezing the dollar amount of benefits at current levels as a ceiling would solve a lot of problems over the next few years as they figure out how to reform the program.
Just limit it to dried beans and brown rice.
LOL! I don’t think *anyone* is saying that. These programs just need dramatic reform.
Uncle Ben’s has a new product of beans and rice called “Street food”. I picked up a bunch on closeout the other day at 50 cents/each.
https://www.amazon.com/BENS-ORIGINAL-Burrito-Prepared-Microwave/dp/B0D51NZCGM
Yes, you could just offer only healthy staples (ie rice, beans, bread, potatoes, eggs, some fresh fruit, cheese, etc) plus personal hygiene/cleaning supplies and at that point it would be so cheap to provide you could not even bother worrying about fraud or abuse.
I have (long ago) actually had SNAP and WIC (well, my wife/kid did) and I appreciate the programs – they gave us some breathing room at a point when things were pretty tight and nobody had to drop out of school or anything to make ends meet.
The difference between WIC and SNAP is shocking – there’s no way you can get soda or energy drinks or candy with WIC, it’s only actual food. On SNAP you could literally fill your cart with Nutella and Coke and get diabetes on the government dime.
Decent food is cheap, too. You can feed a whole family for a few days at least on the cost of a few Monster energy drinks.
And if you need energy, you can buy caffeine pills at the local store for like 40 for $3-$4.
Long ago, my little family was able to utilize WIC. I made sure to use every voucher we received. My kids had milk at a time I worried they’d not get the nutrition they required to thrive. Also, what we couldn’t consume quickly, we froze it to reserved it or bought dried goods that store well (rice &beans) By doing that, we had a nice stash of frozen concentrate cranberry or orange juice that lasted a few months after WIC stopped. No, the kids didn’t drink it all the time, we tried very hard to balance their diet. The 1 lb bag of dried split pea became homemade soup with bits of ham added. My kids still love it to this day. The workers at the WIC office were astute to who really needed the grocery boost and who didn’t. Since we could never qualify for any other aid, WIC was a godsend during our working poor years. If SNAP needs reforming, make it like WIC. It is limited on the scope of food available, but it definitely is set up to encourage a healthy diet.
I call that the extortion argument. “Give me money or I riot”. They have no claim on any money nor do they have special dispensation to riot.
“If the shutdown goes on long enough nothing gets paid. The very last item on the list would be interest on debt.”
To clarify, what Mish is saying here is that interest payments on the debt have the very highest priority. Not paying interest (even temporarily) would drive up interest rates on government debt, which scares the bejeezus out of politicians.
Correct!
That would be default.
But we will not get close to that point.
Someone also said “The only obligation the government has is interest on the debt. Everything else is a political promise, and a choice.
Interest can always be paid by printing. It’s just the vale of he dollar who will vanish.
Several Oregon counties have alerted news stations about this & evidently some SNAP recipients received an email telling them this too according to social media & news articles in the last recent days. Food pantries & social welfare groups including churches in my area are making special efforts to provide food items to help bridge this gap. Citizens are joining together to help these orgs get food to those in need. Under this admin illegality is basically meaningless until someone/org takes it to court, we the citizens don’t even blink now when some new atrocious political act is declared illegal, it happens almost every day.
I hope you don’t think legality was important to numerous other administrations, including the previous one.
While all of this is good and grand and legal and illegal and all of that crap- bottom line is we are missing the truly important and big picture here- should the federal government, both logistically and constitutionally be invovled in any of this? The amount of waste/graft that goes on with all of this in first having states collect the money to send to DC to then have it run through at least one level if not more of bureacuracy with the only thing being accomplished is someone is getting paid to funnel money to the next set of funnelers is a whole different level of stupid and crazy. There is a reason we were set up the way we were and until Lincoln viewed ourselves as what we are supposed to be, a set of states that come together under a common flag but that on the whole are responsible at the state level per our founding documents for deciding what mix of things we we want our local government to run. Pulling the band aid off is darn painful, but we have had several presidents starting with Trumand and Ike who could have begun this at a time when it was not going to hurt nearly so bad and perhaps many things, like LBJ’s great society, never come to be.
I live in the Detroit metro area and Detroit has a high poverty rate. If you are observant the majority of the recipients are obese. Huge amount of abuse in that program. RFK has it right when he recommended that food stamps only be used for fresh unprocessed food.
So let’s do things legally, or is that too much to ask?
It is not too much to ask. Assuming Mish and Grok are right (which I do) the courts might step in. They’ll have to move fast, though. I do admit that it will be an interesting experiment to what happens if SNAP is cut off. Could be that “SHTF” moment we’ve been hearing about for years. I have eaten squirrel. Tastes like chicken.
Try rats, tastes like lawyers.
About $100,000,000,000/yr is spent on SNAP. There are about 42,000,000 recipients, so that works out to about $2380/yr per recipient, meaning about $200/month. Apparently, the average household spends about $500/month for food at home, which includes high expense items like beef.
Even if SNAP benefits are cut, people can resort to “substitution” to make up a large part of the difference, for example trading down from beef to chicken. They can easily cut out luxury purchases such as coffee and soda, and switch to tea bags or powdered flavor like kool-aid. Right now, a lot of SNAP money goes to “luxury” purchases like T-bone steak or fancy “club” crackers, or high cost beverages.
People definitely will not starve if the $200/month SNAP goes away, in contrast to what hysterical extremists would have you believe. People will just learn to substitute down.
My wife and I are retired and well-off (fortunately). We rarely eat beef due to the expense, even though we can afford it. We will buy some ground beef to make chili, but usually stick to chicken and pork (on sale). I don’t understand how families with growing kids make ends meet with the price of groceries these days. My wife and I maybe eat out 2 times per month. Each dinner is worth a week of groceries.
Best way to eat beef affordably is buy a smoker and whole briskets, they’re around $5-6 a pound.
NO!
There is so much other pork to cut ahead of this. Cut the MIC in half.
Yes, eliminate junk food. Reform the program. But if you want to “rip off the bandaids”, this is the last thing to cut.
