Debt Ceiling Crisis Postponed as Democrats Agree to a Temporary Deal

For now, Democrats still resist hiking the debt ceiling through a reconciliation process. But as expected, they caved in somewhere.

That somewhere was agreeing to a Temporary Deal, something the Democrat leadership also said they would not do.

Democrats signaled they would take up Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell’s offer to raise the U.S. debt ceiling into December, alleviating the immediate risk of a default but raising the prospect of another bruising political fight near the end of the year.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer didn’t respond publicly, but Democrats leaving a meeting with him Wednesday said they were ready to push through a short-term increase in the debt limit. Still, they said they will continue to oppose using a process called reconciliation to pass a longer-term increase in the limit with only Democratic votes, which McConnell has demanded.

The deal came after President Joe Biden late Tuesday remarked to reporters about discussions underway among Senate Democrats to temporarily change the chamber’s filibuster rule to allow the debt ceiling measure to go through, saying it was a “real possibility.” Still, all Democrats in the Senate would have to go along with that, and Democratic Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia told reporters Wednesday he wouldn’t support doing that.

While Democrats declared it a victory, it leaves them in a politically difficult bind. In about two months they will be facing the same fight, and have yet to articulate a strategy to avoid it. And unless Republicans capitulate, Democrats will be forced to set a dollar amount on how much they want to raise the debt ceiling, a number that is sure to be used in GOP ads during the 2022 campaign for congressional elections.

We’re going to pay our debts, we have two months to figure out where we go from here,” Senate Budget Chair Bernie Sanders said.

Always a Victory

Trump set the standard that everyone now follows: No matter what the outcome, declare victory and be done with it.

Even if Manchin holds firm on spending $1.5 trillion instead of the $3.5 trillion Biden asked, the only Liberal who might not declare victory is Bernie Sanders.

Showdown Postponed, Not Cancelled

McConnell wants to force Democrats to use the reconciliation process to raise the debt ceiling so the Democrats alone are responsible.

That showdown was postponed, not cancelled.

I really don’t find Manchin’s statements particularly contradictory or weird in any way. Pretty straightforward, really.
Until he actually DOES something, whatever he’s considering, or whatever he’s telling his leadership behind the scenes is just something for the media to blow up into a “scoop” ……as I saw the story described.
If there was a Democrat like Joe Manchin in my state, I’d be working for his campaign. We haven’t had anybody like him since Anne Richards got beat by Bush Jr. I admire him and Sinema both. It’s called having the courage of your convictions, something politicians don’t much  have anymore.

Moderates are pretty thin on the ground nowadays. I also greatly admired Texas Speaker Joe Strauss, who was a moderate Republican cut from the same cloth. They’ve almost all disappeared from the scene now replaced by a bunch of extremists. Not a good sign, imho.

Interesting look for Chuckie.  Reminds one of recent events like a gala or an award show where the plebs were masked, but the special people had their faces bared to the world.
Another manufactured “crisis” averted – tune in next time to see if our heroes can escape disaster once again!

These things were so much easier when Trump was willing to give away the farm in exchange for nothing…

Yeah, he was the great uniter and a very ‘productive’ pol 🙂
Seriously though, the guy is a showman and an opportunist (and doesn’t seem particularly wise), but he is great for television ratings (just ask CBS/Colbert).  He was a ‘dem’ when convenient, then a ‘repub’ when convenient.  There’s a George Carlin quote that would be appropriate for the lead image in this article-

DJT a follower, too.
In 1966, in the middle of the Vietnam War, the late Senator George Aiken of Vermont famously recommended that the United States simply “declare victory and get out.”

You think this started with Trump? Please. Politicians and governments never say they were wrong. It’s been that way forever and not just in the US. Politicians and governments will always what they want to be true. Latest example is Hunter Biden’s laptop being Russian disinformation. And half the country believed it. Even though logically it makes no sense. How can a laptop be an idea? It’s like saying a pencil is a lie. The half that believed is by far the most gullible half that is too gullible to recognize how gullible they are.

So the media and treasury secretary want to say that delaying a few payments on debt will cause a worldwide massive recession.  Really, how is that anywhere near the impact of shuttering all small businesses for COVID last year?

It would be more like 2008. Credit markets would freeze up. There is a domino effect of missing debt payments. Are you really that clueless?

If the system is as fragile as they advertise it to be every time they want to raid the Treasury, it’s probably best that we actually let it blow up sooner than later.

This might well be a smart move for Republicans, getting a deadline closer to the midterms, and giving the Democrats even more time to self-destruct before they try to extend the debt chimney–it’s just smoke, after all.

The only mistake the Democrats made was ever cooperating with Republicans on anything between 2017 and 2019. . You bet they wont make that mistake again. The Republicans must think we all have short memories.

You’ll have to forgive me…but what exactly did Democrats “cooperate” with Republicans on between 2017 and 2019?

Memory duration is about the same as Republicans, who were told by obama to ‘sit in the back of the bus.’

Only after Mxconnell said his only job was to make sure Obama was a one term president on or around January 30, 2009.  The bottom line here is Democrats want a government. Republicans want chaos and anarchy.
