Fed Chair Jerome Powell Hides Behind a Cloud of Uncertainty

Powell quote from Congressional testimony, image from Fed image repository

Powell Testimony Quotes

  • Uncertainty: “It’s important for us to be careful in the way we conduct policy simply because things are so uncertain and we don’t want to add to that uncertainty.”
  • Autopilot, Not Data: “I do think it’s going to be appropriate for us to proceed along the lines we had in mind before the Ukraine invasion happened.”
  • Not In Control: “There’s already a lot of upward inflation pressure and additional pressure does probably raise the risk that inflation expectations will start to react in a way that is negative for controlling inflation.”

The above testimony quotes via the Wall Street Journal, the bold introductions are my comments.

What About Hope?

Here’s an interesting exchange about hope.

  • Sen. Richard Shelby (R., Ala.) pushed Mr. Powell to say whether he would follow the example set by former Fed Chairman Paul Volcker in the 1980s to push down inflation at all costs. “I would hope history will record that the answer to your question is yes,” said Mr. Powell.
  • Mr. Shelby responded curtly: “That would be a departure from what you’ve done.

Fed Still On Autopilot

Let’s Skip Policy Reporting

   “I don’t remember, that’s also a real possibility.

Fed Uncertain About Uncertain Things

This is a perfect excuse to review the Fed Uncertainty Principle and all its corollaries.

Fed Uncertainty Principle

The fed, by its very existence, has completely distorted the market via self-reinforcing observer/participant feedback loops. Thus, it is fatally flawed logic to suggest the Fed is simply following the market, therefore the market is to blame for the Fed’s actions. There would not be a Fed in a free market, and by implication, there would not be observer/participant feedback loops either.

Corollary Number One

The Fed has no idea where interest rates should be. Only a free market does. The Fed will be disingenuous about what it knows (nothing of use) and doesn’t know (much more than it wants to admit), particularly in times of economic stress.

Corollary Number Two

The government/quasi-government body most responsible for creating this mess (the Fed), will attempt a big power grab, purportedly to fix whatever problems it creates. The bigger the mess it creates, the more power it will attempt to grab. Over time this leads to dangerously concentrated power into the hands of those who have already proven they do not know what they are doing.

Corollary Number Three

Don’t expect the Fed to learn from past mistakes. Instead, expect the Fed to repeat them with bigger and bigger doses of exactly what created the initial problem.

Corollary Number Four

The Fed simply does not care whether its actions are illegal or not. The Fed is operating under the principle that it’s easier to get forgiveness than permission. And forgiveness is just another means to the desired power grab it is seeking.

Need to Be Nimble

On Wednesday, Jerome Powell affirmed a rate hike in March to Congress. Yet Powell Stressed the Need to be Nimble.

The Fed is so nimble that it’s on autopilot due to uncertainty!

What About Recession?

Powell did not mention the R word in prepared remarks to Congress. And it did not come up in Q&A follow-up questions that I have seen.

My stance is quite a bit different.

A Recession Looms, Blame the Fed and Biden, Not Russia

A recession fueled by collapsing demand, a liquidity crunch, and fading stimulus effects is coming up. Inflation sure doesn’t help.

For discussion, please see A Recession Looms, Blame the Fed and Biden, Not Russia.

The Fed is banking on the statistical anomaly for the measure of inflation, when calculated year over year, to show price increases are diminishing. This is what occurred in the 1970s; yearly inflation data increased for a few years and ebbed, before rising again.
Although increasing wages, the effects of rising oil prices, and commodity shortages due to the war, may surpass the YoY inflation of the second half of 2021.

The Fed is clueless even more so because of Putin invading Ukraine.  Global supply chains will be disrupted and changed forever more.  The 2000s and 2010s were sanguine compared to the 2020s so far.

“Fed Chair Jerome Powell Hides Behind a Cloud of Uncertainty”
All charlatans living high off of scamming idiots do.
Everything is “complicated,” “complex” and “uncertain,” according to them. By now, considering the sorry state a century of aggressive funneling of all wealth, hence power and influence, to the dumbest of the dumb, chances are they even believe so…..
“Uncertain” and “complicated”, of course requires them; illiterate clowns like The Fed, Pippi Thunberg, halfwits holed up in banks on massive stolen Fed drips, ambulance chasers, self promoting hysterics of every stripe, and others of similar intellectual stature; to arbitrarily “deem” and “hold” and “decide” what others are to do with their lives and livelihoods. After all, what could possibly work better than handing control over the lives of others to someone entirely “uncertain” about anything, yet barging ahead regardless. It ain’t the DumbAge for nothing.

When the US does something that you think is wrong, you, or I, have the freedom to say so. That makes us very different than some countries where people are imprisoned (or worse) if they protest against what their country is doing.  What I want for Ukraine (and the rest of the countries in Eur-Asia) is that they can live free, and they can choose whether they want to be in NATO, in the Russian sphere, or neutral. They should not be slaughtered for choosing to be independent.

“All Along The Watchtower”
“There must be some way out of here,” said the joker to the thief,
“There’s too much confusion, I can’t get no relief
Businessmen, they drink my wine, plowmen dig my earth
None of them along the line know what any of it is worth.”
“No reason to get excited”, the thief, he kindly spoke,
“There are many here among us who feel that life is but a joke
But you and I, we’ve been through that, and this is not our fate
So let us not talk falsely now, the hour is getting late”.
All along the watchtower, princes kept the view
While all the women came and went, barefoot servants, too.
Outside in the distance a wildcat did growl
Two riders were approaching, the wind began to howl.

BTW.  The best version of that song is done by Playing for change.  link to youtube.com.    It is also philosophized that this song is about the devil speaking to Jesus.  He is the thief, like a thief in the night.

That’s a great version of one of the best songs I know. Myself because of my age prefer the version of Jimi Hendri. The epoch that Dyan wrote about in the 1960’s. Great change is coming but we don’t know where it goes. I am 68 years old so I have seen change already. I envy the younger ones for their youth of course but most of all the changes they will see.

Things have been quite peaceful the last thirty years, and I have not thought about them in a long time, but I think Russia has just reminded us why we used to consider them the Evil Empire. In other news, today Putin issued a statement that everything is unfolding as he has foreseen.  Not word for word, but he did say that that things were on schedule, and they were accomplishing their objectives.

link to youtube.com    Even Putin didn’t do this , it took Cheney, Bush, Mossad, and Saudi Arabia to do it.
USA exterminated 95% of the American Indian population ( massive genocide).  Then our country moved on to slavery of stolen Africans for over a 100 years.  Not to mention slaughtering almost 2 million in Vietnam , Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia.  Then we deforested their food source with agent orange- complete with massive genetic damage to their children to this day.  Oh- and remember the 600,000 dead in Iraq ?  When “Yellowcake Powell” shook his fake uranium vial and lied to the UN about weapons of mass destruction that never existed.  How about Lyndon Johnson raving ” I want that ship on the bottom of the sea”  ( The murderous false flag attack with Israel upon our own ship – The US Liberty.)
Talk about an “Evil Empire” ?   We got one right here.

The stories about depleted uranium munitions in Lybia aren’t very flattering either.
The U.S. is far from alone when it comes to such actions towards indigenous populations or other various groups of people, it spans the ages.

We couldn’t care less about Ukraine. This whole thing is about preventing Russia from becoming an ally with Germany. If that happens, there’s no need for NATO and the US loses all influence over Eurasia. China is building roads and railroad tracks between China and Europe and can move cargo there and back in 2 weeks instead of 2 months by boat. China is also building commerce infrastructure all over the world. In 20 years, they’ll be in control of world commerce and have a military to protect their commerce lanes.

Im not sure the economy can handle it as stated by BOC  Macklem. It sure looks like a lot of pain is coming one way or the other.
“The economy is now in a place where moving to a more normal setting for interest rates is appropriate. The economy can handle it. We know this will be a significant adjustment, and we fully intend to tighten policy in a deliberate and careful way, being mindful of the impacts and monitoring the effects closely. The bank is committed to returning inflation to the 2 per cent target and keeping inflation expectations well anchored.”

Re the common thought of the Fed Put.  This comment yesterday from a CURRENT federal reserve official.  May be an admission that Federal Reserve knew LSAP fueled market bubble (though they’ll never admit to a bubble, let alone be reason).

Logan, who heads the New York Fed’s market operations, said that asset purchases to support market functioning will be rare in the future.

“I expect circumstances warranting sizable intervention to support market functioning to be extraordinarily rare,” she said.

Sounds like Bernanke when QE started. It was supposed to be a temporary measure and would be unwound once things stabilized.

So the FED is basically the same as every part of the federal government. More concerned with not being wrong than being right. Technically they’re not part of the government like the USPS isn’t.
