Guaranteed Basic Income for Kids, New Trillion Dollar Entitlements, Republicans on Board

President Biden and the Progressives are on a full court press for the Child Tax Credit feature of Biden’s American Rescue Plan.

The American Rescue Plan increased the Child Tax Credit from $2,000 per child to $3,000 per child for children over the age of six and from $2,000 to $3,600 for children under the age of six, and raised the age limit from 16 to 17. All working families will get the full credit if they make up to $150,000 for a couple or $112,500 for a family with a single parent (also called Head of Household).

Guaranteed Basic Income for Kids

What started as a $500 child tax credit in the 1990’s has morphed into The New Government Basic Income

In March as part of their Covid relief bill, Democrats expanded the credit for 2021 to $3,600 for children under age six and $3,000 for older dependents. That’s up from the $2,000 Republicans offered as part of tax reform in 2017, which was an increase from $1,000.

The Democratic budget reconciliation bill would extend these provisions through 2025, and the political expectation is that they will be extended after that and never be repealed. That’s a safe bet. Democrats would also keep the full credit “refundable,” which means it is paid in a check to those who don’t owe any income tax.

Before the expansion, the average child credit for a family below 100% of the poverty line was about $975, according to estimates from the Congressional Research Service. Now it’s $5,421. That comes on top of other transfer programs such as food stamps and the earned-income tax credit.

The original tax-credit rationale was to defray the costs of raising young children, but the Democratic bill also creates new entitlements for a separate child-care program plus paid family leave and universal pre-K education.

Republicans have been missing in action on this seismic policy change, in part because their big government wing has been pushing the family subsidy as well.

How Much Can Manchin Stand?

This all comes down to how much Senators Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona can stand.

Manchin wants a package closer to $1.5 Trillion, Bernie Sanders wants $6.0 trillion and the alleged compromise is the $3.5 trillion that Biden seeks.

Biden Pressed Manchin for a Price Tag

Biden called the so-called moderate senators to the White House separately on Wednesday.

At the meeting Biden Pressed Manchin for a Price Tag that Manchin could support.

Manchin, a key vote in the Senate, was part of a group of House and Senate moderates who met with Biden on Wednesday afternoon as Democrats try to figure out a way to bridge their divides on the $3.5 trillion package.

“He just basically said find a number you’re comfortable with,” Manchin said, adding that Biden’s message was to “please just work on it. Give me a number.”

Manchin told reporters that he didn’t give Biden a number he could get behind and that Biden didn’t give him a hard deadline for when moderates needed to turn over that number.

House and Senate Democrats approved a budget resolution earlier this year that allows them to pass a bill of up to $3.5 trillion without GOP support in the Senate.

But that price tag has run into hurdles from moderates, including Manchin and Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.), who have said they can’t support a bill of that size.

But progressives are loath to go lower. Senate Budget Committee Chairman Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) told reporters after the meeting that “the top line has come down. It started at $6 trillion.”

Manchin, speaking to reporters, warned progressives against holding the Senate-passed infrastructure bill “hostage.” Manchin was a part of the Senate bipartisan group that negotiated the bill in August.

“It’s still a shame, it truly is a shame, that they’re using that as a hostage toward this,” Manchin said. “To hold up a bill that every part of this country needs doesn’t make any sense at all,” Manchin said, adding that Biden “would love to see that bill to move forward.”

Still No Outline

And so, here we are. There is still no reconciliation spending outline, and Progressives still threaten to sink the whole thing.

Sanders moans the starting point was $6 trillion. Perhaps he should have started at $100 trillion so he could moan about giving up 94% of what he asked.

Best Possible Outcome

The best possible outcome is if AOC and the Progressives do kill the whole deal because the county cannot afford another massive entitlement program when Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid are all insolvent.

Doesn’t matter what Bernie and the squad want. No one in the house likes them. They want them to go away. They’ll back whatever the republicans don’t want, so the democrats don’t need their support.
I’m not opposed to the child tax credit. I still have one kid who would get it. I think it’s too much, but I would much rather have money go to families with kids than go to pretty much everything else the government gives money to.

But there is never enough people, so let’s compete with third world or just import it.

A lot of money has been printed and handed off to the super rich and those running the corporations.   So, either (a) levy hefty wealth and corporate taxes in order to try and level the playing field, or (b) print more money and this time, help those in dire personal financial straits.
If you are the type to whine or moralize or lecture about both (a) and (b), then I would say – GFY!!!!   You can have either one or the other, but the time to have neither is long gone at least 20 years, if not 40 years ago.

Relax. Things are just happening as is to be expected at the end of a Democracy/Republic, and they are inevitable. They always destroy themselves, and they always do it the same way. The real end of the United States was in 1937, when the limitations on the power of the Federal Government were eliminated. Since then, things have been winding down slowly. Now hat the end is closer, things are happening a lot faster. Sure, a right-wing taxpayer revolt and shift to Fascism is a possibility, but I think January 6 was the best shot they had, and that train has now left the station. The more likely result will be an accelerated move to Socialism, followed at some point by the removal of the USD as a reserve currency, which will lead to a collapse in the standard of living, and a move to anarchism, and eventually to a Dictatorship. Dictatorships always follow Democracies.
Why is the end inevitable in the near future? Simple. A Democracy can only last as long as the people value it and work to protect it. The young people today don’t value it, and in fact, blame it for all their problems. It is not their duty to solve their own problems; it is government’s job to provide for them, and to solve all their problems. There is no fix for that. If they don’t value the government, there is no reason to honor or defend it. Instead, tear it down, and start over.

I get what most of you well thought out response…the way the fed and govt play today, it seems they don’t want the reserve dollar. War will come before a dictatorship, the war could be internal as folks, police, military might be about done with the 2 headed snake…..paying someone to have more kids is about as insane as any thinking can get….I won’t partake and have sheltered myself to make sure of it but I’m fighting for my kids, they are the ones who will suffer because of the bolsheviks of the left and the rhinos of the right….what a pair….

Most likely, China will take us over, as they will the whole world.  They have the population, the manufacturing, the drive to get stuff done (they are building a new space station and angling for a Moon base by 2030’s) and they don’t particularly care about “human rights”.   If only their language was easier to learn….
This was an interesting post.  The end really is nigh.

The New Censors: Poll Shows Almost Half of Americans Favor the Government Censoring “Misinformation”
We recently discussed the rise of a generation of censors as young people embrace the role of government and corporate censorship.  The erosion of free speech rights is manifest in a chilling poll from the Pew Research Center that shows a huge jump in favor of censorship among citizens with almost half now supporting the government barring “misinformation.”  The shift is almost entirely among Democrats who (like Democratic leaders) now overwhelming favor fewer free speech protections and more government control over speech.
The poll shows 48 percent of survey respondents supporting government censorship of misinformation as compared to 39 percent in 2018.
Republicans have become more protective of free speech but the shift among Democratic voters is startling. In 2018, just 40 percent of Democrats supported censorship by the government and Big Tech. It is now 65 percent.

Why stop at $3,000/$3,600 per child? Double the amount will encourage more people to have more kids. Extend it to every child, whether a US citizen or an illegal alien.

I agree…but i also wonder at this point – could a political party succeed with a message of thrift over one that offers free stuff for all?
I can’t help but think of Ben Franklin’s quote: “When the people find that they can vote themselves money that will herald the end of the republic.”

Over the last 10 years the two parties have changed sides. The democrats are now the party of war and being backed by big business. They’re the ones complaining the other side is too soft on Russia. The republicans have become the party of the little guys. Hard to believe, but it’s true.
Plus, the republicans are the ones led by total wimps like McConnel and Graham. While the dems have much stronger leadership.

There is a way to have a guaranteed income and cut both payroll and income taxes at the same time. You just have to actually look at it with an open mind, and how it integrates the most cherished parts of the agendas of both major political parties.

Never fear, the legislation also includes funds for the IRS and massive changes to the tax code, such as all transactions exceeding $600 passing through any financial institution must be reported to the IRS.

The “moderates” made this deal with the devil, the “progressives” agreed to push through the infrastructure if it was tied to their spending bonanza.  The “moderates” agreed, and now want to reneg.  Pretty funny watching the contortions and explanations and blame games as to who is right and wrong and “how dare” people hold up this debt spending until people agree to more debt spending.

I would say it is U shaped with lots of kids at the poor
side and on the very wealthy side and collapse of births in the middle. Those
in the middle need both to work, pay the bulk of the taxes without being able
to benefit from tax shelters and receive no government help in anything because
they are above the poverty line.  I must
admit that I am a dangerous radical middle-classer and vote in consequence.

Considering how expensive kids are I don’t see this tax break as excessive. I mean, look at college: $50K a year, at least. I
To a certain degree my kids are the future of America. Example: I’ve had childless couples whine to me about how high their property taxes are because of schools, I’ve pointed out that my kids are going to be paying their social security which is going to be many times what they paid for public schools. So, if I get a tax break I have to admit I don’t feel too bad about it. It’s chump change compared to the expense of a kid.

I feel better about your kids getting my tax money than I would about the military building B-1’s and F-35’s.
I sent four kids to college (undergrad only)  and paid the full ride, while some of my more libertarian friends who had money made their kids borrow, or talked them into joining the military.
I have no regrets about that at all, looking back, now that my kids are all over 30. It was money well spent.
I benefited from a highly subsidized college education and professional school education…and the government made out just fine in the long run. I’ve paid millions in tax over the last 35 years.
To me it makes good sense for the government to help people who have the ability…to learn a skill or trade or get a degree in something that will support them and their families. I DON’T think the money should be able to be siphoned off by for-profit private schools that teach cosmetology or hair styling.

basic income idea goes back to thomas paine.   many libertarians think it is a good idea too.   why not pay kids to live here.   better than bankers and military industry.    seems like a good idea long term as this empire morphs into something more european style safety nets.    the europeans already did their war mongering colonizing empire building in past centuries.   i think this is the natural order.

Yeah so it rains all winter and the grass grows.  By late may maybe early june it dies then you take a weed eater to your yard before it gets into fire season.  One and done.   Unless you live in the burbs. Then you water the grass and own a lawn mower.   Crazy if you want someone to do it for you its 15 bucks a hour.   If you could make it a full time job it would be 32 a year.

A weedeater is a device (electric or gas powered) used to trim the grass around the edges near fences, sidewalks etc.
Google it and you’ll see them for sale. Probably called something else where you live. But here the company that make the first one in the US got so popular that the term is now called ‘weedeating’ your yard.
