How Many Months or Years will Supply Chain Disruptions Last?

Disturbing Thoughts From Pete Buttigieg

In a Bloomberg video interview, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg told Bloomberg Some Supply Chain Issues May Last ‘Years and Years’.

Bloomberg: What is the risk we will not have the goods on the shelves for Christmas?

Buttigieg: What we know is there are short term actions we can take that are making a difference already. Some of this is a bigger picture longer term issue that’s going to take years and years to address.

Powell Inflation Alert

Echoing the thoughts of Buttigieg, American Shipper reports Supply Chain Chaos and Sky-High Costs Could Last Until 2023.

Supply chain woes and port congestion are now getting attention at the central-bank level, given their effects on inflation. Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell recently lamented, “It is frustrating to see the bottlenecks and supply chain problems not getting better. In fact … [they are] apparently getting worse.

Powell foresees supply chain woes “continuing into next year, probably, and holding up inflation longer than we thought.”

“Timing the top” predictions have slid from Golden Week 2020 to year-end 2020 to Chinese Lunar New Year 2021 to midyear to year-end 2021 to sometime past Lunar New Year 2022. Liner companies have persistently proven far too conservative in their forecasts. Maersk has upgraded its guidance three times this year; current 2021 earnings guidance is more than twice initial expectations.

‘Whole of 2022 may be another peak season’

Nerijus Poskus, vice president of global ocean at digital freight forwarder Flexport, told American Shipper, “We have been in a never-ending peak season. In my opinion, peak season is when there is less supply than demand and there is a backlog building somewhere. And I think we have been in it ever since COVID hit.

“I would say that the shippers that don’t have enough inventory at this time are going to sell out prior to Christmas because of all of the delays,” Poskus said, adding that the current lead time for cargo from Asia to inland U.S. points using non-premium ocean and rail can now be over 100 days.

The current anchorage situation has now lasted over three times as long as the 2015 pileup caused by the labor dispute and has already put 4.8 times as many container ships at anchor. The fear going into 2022 is a worst-case scenario of labor-contract-related congestion layered on top of import-driven congestion.

How Long Will This Last?

Everyone is trying to figure that out.

The answer, without specifying a date, is when consumers throw in the towel causing a recession. Alternatively, recession hits led by housing, a stock market decline, or another factor said to cause a recession.

Take your pick, it does not matter whether you see this as a cart-horse issue or a horse-cart issue. Consumer attitudes are ultimately the key

What About Christmas?

Please note Big Retailers Try to Save Christmas by Chartering Ships

The effort by big retailers to save Christmas despite major bottlenecks is on. That effort is expensive.

Prices seem certain to rise and smaller merchants might not get key goods in time.

Will shoppers even show up?

Will Shoppers Even Show Up?

That’s the key question, but no one can answer it.

It’s all about attitudes.

Congressional tax hikes, stock market valuations, and Biden’s Build Back Better plans, and just plain consumer exhaustion are all in play as drivers of consumer attitudes.

A Word About Forecasts

Don’t place too much faith in forecasts by Buttigieg, Powell, or anyone else.

I don’t know when this ends and neither do they

However, lopsided sentiment is now extreme. Put me in the minority who thinks this is more likely to sooner rather than later.

Importantly, do not discount the possibility that Stagflation Light Might Strike as Early as the Third Quarter This Year.

From where I sit, data is looking very recessionary, with the caveat that I am nearly always early on such pontifications.

They’ll last until the Taliban rescues us and makes this dump a bit better. And likely even beyond that, as even those guys seem better at blowing up supply chains than building them.
Broken supply chains are nothing more than a symptom of distorted economic signals. Everyone who has money enough to buy influence in America, 100+ years post Fed creation, owes all their wealth and then some specifically to all encompassing officially sanctioned theft, and nothing but. Which is another way of saying “distorted economic signals.”
So, noone who can afford to buy any government services, can afford to have supply lines non-disrupted. It wouldn’t be Dystopia if it wasn’t properly dystopian, after all.

With 80% of shipping controlled by just 3 lines (after decades of consolidation and poor pricing), we certainly cannot look forward to competition to solve any problems. They are ecstatic with the situation and will try to continue the “less supply than demand” business model until they can’t anymore.

Wait until consumers realize they have been lied to about the jab.  The war on coronadoom is no different than the war on poverty, crime, terrorism, and gloBull warming. They will all be solved when they stop benefiting the establishment.

In “Wealth of Nations”, Adam Smith’s thesis that every country should specialize has been completely dis-proven.

This supply chain disruption must be met with ultimate resolve! Printing a few more trillions should do it. What you loose in volume, you make up on price.

I saw an article that beginning 1-1-21, half the trucks in the US don’t meet California emissions standards.  Thus, half the trucks in the US can’t go to the Port of Long Beach, or the Port of Los Angeles.

we have begun the transition to a 3rd world economy.  supply chain disruptions will be the norm forever from now.  commodities markets are broken, bond market is broken, so it’s impossible for manufacturers to make long-term predictions for demand and to plan their supply accurately.  as a result, they will err on the conservative side and produce less so they can retain pricing power.  in 3rd world countries, you buy anything you can get your hands on because what is available today may not be available tomorrow and the currency is losing value rapidly.

Thanks!  That article nicely explains the issues.
Seems like everything needs to be automated to do away with shifts and work limit rules.  Humans are too slow.

Surely you know that most of the loading and unloading is automated. The software manages the distribution of containers, so the ship is balanced. The loading on trucks is probably the bottleneck.
However, the main problem is stimulus out of every orifice, and that’s a human error not easy to fix.

It’s unionized so they can’t do away with work limit rules.
That’s one of the the problem with unions, they can’t adjust to emergencies like non-union places can and since it’s unionized you can bring in temporary workers either.

I’m still trying to understand why Biden had to order the port of LA to work 24 hr shifts to try to unload the waiting boats.  Why weren’t they working 24 hr shifts in the first place?

I don’t think they have enough trucks to haul that stuff away, so it is probably moot.

Wont make any difference. The major lines only call at a select few ports and it did not take much added varibility to bollux them up.  Meanwhile secondary ports lay empty

Fwiw, I could see the US economy slipping into recession in 2022…maybe with a significant popping of the stock market bubble or RE. But I don’t think it will be as severe as 2008. Not the big one everybody expects. But the economic effects of COVID are not over, imho. They’ve just been pushed out a little.

They built a brand new Porsche dealership here  I have to drive by every day going to and from work. It’s a 3 story giant building with new cars in the window up on the 3rd floor.
It’s not really fair at all.

That doesn’t say much. The Taycan is a new design, and the devotees of the classic design are moving to retirement homes.
The 911 was even outsold by supper fugly Cayenne, or Boxer.
