Is US Resumption of Testing Nuclear Weapons a Good Idea?

My answer is no. Trump’s answer is yes.

Trump on Truth Social

Truth Social Link: The United States has more Nuclear Weapons than any other country. This was accomplished, including a complete update and renovation of existing weapons, during my First Term in office. Because of the tremendous destructive power, I HATED to do it, but had no choice! Russia is second, and China is a distant third, but will be even within 5 years. Because of other countries testing programs, I have instructed the Department of War to start testing our Nuclear Weapons on an equal basis. That process will begin immediately. Thank you for your attention to this matter! PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP

Other countries are doing nuclear testing, so we will too, whether we need to or not.

What kind of logic is that?

Testing to Begin Immediately

The Wall Street Journal reports Trump Says U.S. Will Begin Testing Nuclear Weapons

President Trump said that he has ordered the Pentagon to “start testing our Nuclear Weapons on an equal basis” with Russia and China.

The U.S. last conducted a nuclear weapons test in 1992 and has joined Russia and China in observing a decadeslong moratorium on underground nuclear blasts.

It wasn’t immediately clear what prompted his post, though Russian President Vladimir Putin said this week that Russia has tested a new type of nuclear-powered cruise missile and a nuclear-powered underwater drone.

The White House didn’t immediately respond to a request for additional details. Some experts questioned whether Trump might have been referring to the flight tests of missiles that carry nuclear warheads rather than the nuclear explosive.

For decades, Russia and China have observed a moratorium on underground nuclear tests, along with the U.S. And the U.S. has an extensive program to ensure the reliability of its nuclear arsenal through small nuclear experiments and computer simulations that former officials and many experts say makes testing unnecessary.

The U.S. has conducted more than 1,000 nuclear tests. China has carried out 45 nuclear tests, the last of which was in 1996.

Resuming nuclear testing could also work to the disadvantage of the U.S. since the American weapons complex has carried out many more nuclear tests than China and, thus, has more data to draw on.

“I don’t think testing is necessary to assure reliability of the U.S. nuclear arsenal,” said Gary Samore, who served as the top expert on weapons of mass destruction for former President Bill Clinton’s National Security Council. “It would be a gift to Russia and China, which are developing new types of nuclear weapons and would benefit from the resumption of testing.”

Hopefully, Trump is confusing nuclear testing with testing of delivery systems, but who the hell knows?

And do we need testing of delivery systems? If so why?

Trump Seeks a “Golden Fleet”

Fod those of you watching the budget soar out of sight, please note that Trump Pushes for a Golden Fleet.

President Trump has said he wants a whole new fleet of warships. And now they have a name.

Senior White House and Navy officials are in early discussions to replace the current mix of warships with a new “Golden Fleet” that would be better suited to counter China and other potential future threats, according to former and current officials.

Trump, who has previously criticized the look of modern warships, is involved in the plans and has had multiple conversations with Navy officials about the new vessels, the current and former officials said.

Navy officials have dubbed the project Golden Fleet, following other similarly branded Trump-era initiatives, such as the Golden Dome missile defense system he ordered the military to build in January and the Gold Card immigration program.

Under the Golden Fleet concept, the Navy wants to move away from a specific number of ships as a goal, Clark said. Instead, officials will focus on a fleet of roughly 280-300 crewed ships, plus large numbers of unmanned vessels—called “robotic and autonomous systems”—to bridge the gap.

It could take many years to build new, large warships from scratch, and the ship likely wouldn’t see the light of day until after Trump leaves office. Plans for a replacement cruiser, the canceled CG(X) program, indicate such a ship would take five years to design and another five to seven years to build, according to a former official.

How Much Is that Doggie in the Window?

The administration says “We are not going to focus on the number”, but the number is 280-300.

There was no mention of cost for the golden fleet. There was no mention of cost for nuclear testing.

Rumsfeld Flashback

In 2003 Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld said the war in Iraq would cost 3.9 Billion.

In 2014 I noted Defense Dept. to Request $30-40 Billion a Year to Fight ISIS; History Lessons

Anyone recall how the war in Iraq would pay for itself? That was the US Defense Department estimate in 2003.

Now some $3 trillion later (add in veterans’ benefits, depreciation of equipment, humanitarian aid, covert action, and paying for the military efforts of our coalition ‘partners’ and the Total Cost of Iraq, Afghan Wars is $4-6 Trillion.

That was the 2014 cost. The US did not withdraw its last troops from Afghanistan until August 30, 2021. And most Republicans wanted to stay.

Trump’s estimate for the “golden dome” is far less than other estimates.

On May 21, 2025, I asked How Much Will Trump’s “Golden Dome” Missile Defense Shield Cost?

Trump says $175 Billion. The CBO says $542 billion. Think much higher.

One thing we have learned over many decades is no government program ever costs as little as preliminary estimates.

But hey, the golden fleet and the golden dome will be pretty.

All of you who thought this was anything other than a nothingburger were played by the formerly prestigious media. They all turned this into yet another classic “fake news” story. They took Trump’s comment out of context, sought to misinterpret it in the worst possible way to sow confusion and anxiety, and maybe (if they were at least slightly honest) gave lip service to the truth as if it was only one of many possible “interpretations” rather then the only sensible interpretation.

Dozens of media sites clarified over the weekend what they all should have said up front last week: testing “on an equal basis” still means “no plans for nuclear explosions”.

Shame on everyone.

Any idiot can start a war or tear down an economic system or a building.

Peace is difficult and requires more than brute force. Building economic trading platforms and the supply chain takes complex thought, capital and planning. A building or home takes capital, planning, engineering, permitting, material scheduling and skilled craftsmen.

Trump can break things, I have yet to see him build anything tangible.

C’mon guys, this isn’t hard. Any high school student taking the SAT ought to get this one right.

In a context of Russia testing weapons-delivery systems, Trump’s statement about testing “on an Equal Basis” unambiguously means testing of delivery systems only, NOT nuclear explosions.

It also means that IF someone else starts testing nuclear explosions the U.S. can follow suit – which has always been true and is not a policy change.

IMO the most interesting implication of testing “on an equal basis” is that the U.S. is no longer willing to allow other nations to catch up to (and in some areas overtake) U.S. capabilities. The cold-war “arms race” is back.

The commander in chief who has like the greatest most beautiful IQ ever, and whose Uncle was a nuclear scientist at MIT, and who knows more about nuclear stuff than you can even, like, imagine, who just sent a US nuclear powered submarine to the Arctic, where it was already stationed along with a colleague …

Just confused a nuclear war head with carrier delivery platforms.

Trump doesn’t read. He is ignorant.
When they want him to do something, his ventriloquists show him pictures and hand off some slogans, jingles, and talking points to keep repeating.

Yes, the USA should develop & TEST a bunker busting nuclear bomb. Why? Because it’s a foregone conclusion that China & Russia are doing so in a clandestine manner. This is definitely one of those things they’re not going to talk about.

As the US updates it’s nuclear arsenal with major revisions, we should test a device to make sure it’s working exactly has it’s intended.

The US should develop & test an EMP bomb. It’s my understanding that the US has not publicly acknowledged having one in our nuclear arsenal. China & Russia have them supposedly that can generate up to 200K volts per m^2 which would devastate large swaths of the US with just one strike.

Not a good enough reason for me. Nuclear weapons technology is now (2025-1945=) 80 years old. What’s inside that bunker you want to bust? Why not use that money to make nuclear power plants? or better yet not use it at all? The US government already spends much more than it collects.

Well, it it’s clandestine, perhaps the US should follow suit and do all this testing in such a clandestine and undetectable manner that nobody would ever be the wiser.

One of those things that nobody ever talks about.

Keep it that way.

I will agree with Trump (and many past Navy officials) that the US navy is in poor shape. Part of that is because we allowed ship yards to decline or close. Another part is the terrible design of new ships (cost and function). I suspect Trump will only continue the latter while the navy continues to sputter.

His claim that nations (aside from PRNK) are testing nukes is a false premise. The Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty prohibits it. 187 countries signed it, and the US did, but in true American fashion we have refused to ratify it.

Trump is probably confusing the idea of testing vehicles (missiles) that can carry nuclear payloads, but tested without the nukes in them. This man is that stupid.

Experts Explain How Reviving Nuclear Weapons Tests Would Actually Happen
While it remains unclear exactly what Trump meant by “testing our nuclear weapons,” we got expert opinions on the timelines and processes required to restart live detonations.
Oct 30, 2025

https://www.twz.com/nuclear/experts-explain-how-reviving-nuclear-weapons-tests-would-actually-happen

At this point, it’s unclear if the president is talking about testing out nuclear weapons delivery systems, something that happens on a regular basis, or actual warheads via a detonation, which the U.S. hasn’t done in more than three decades. The fact that this has not been officially clarified is highly problematic. We reached out to the White House for more details, and they referred us back to Trump’s social media post. We also reached out to several experts for their insights, which you can read more about later in this story.

Winston
Winston

I suspect he’s referring to nuclear weapons SYSTEMS which is what the recent revelations about the “so what” [I won’t go into detail] new Russian systems and thereby showing how showboat clueless he is because that has NEVER stopped on our side.

As part of the incredibly impressive “Stockpile Stewardship” technical program designed to make sure our nukes will continue to function when we need them, we don’t need to do any actual physical testing of those nukes. The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) prohibits that. “His” “complete update and renovation of existing weapons” during his first term was allowed by that Stockpile Stewardship program and is absolutely nothing new.

On the “because of other countries testing programs, I have instructed the Department of War to start testing our Nuclear Weapons on an equal basis” comment, those countries actually still detonating nuclear weapons are NOT CTBT ban signatories. The US and Russia among others ARE. So, once again, imprecise bloviator Trump says things that the mostly brain dead mainstream media willingly misinterprets because they have TDS.

“The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) is a multilateral treaty that aims to ban all nuclear weapon test explosions and any other nuclear explosions, for both civilian and military purposes.
Opened for Signature: The treaty was opened for signature on September 24, 1996…”

(2025-1996=) about 30 years ago. A lot has changed in 30 years. If I were DoD I’d be more interested in tiny poison-needle-carrying drones with facial recognition software. Or maybe we could train up suburban American video game savants with VR headgear? Blowing up cities with giant bombs seems like a dated concept in 2025.

Winston

Among the CTBT signatories, we have an big advantage with the quality and sophistication of our Stockpile Stewardship. o allow testing again would end that advantage. Plus, believe it or not, our nukes designed in the 50s came within a hair’s breadth of maximum theoretical efficiency, so there’s nothing to gain there.

And do we need testing of delivery systems? If so why?”

Actually yes, and you have ALREADY done so very recently.
And the reason is that the part of the nuclear triad that you tested (the Minuteman III) is ancient, decrepit and crumbling just like the civil American infrastructure and the test, in fact, didn’t go well…
Their replacement has long been planned, it will cost a shitload of money, take a very long time and has been put on hold anyway.

Such tests are done to maintain deterrence and everybody is doing it from time to time. The ever more bellicose and belligerent (and dying…) UK too, for example, did it so relatively recently. They don’t have a nuclear triad but only a (pretty small) submarine based deterrence which BTW depends in many ways on the US and it’s not truly independent.
And in their case too, the tests didn’t go well… LMAO!

This time around it’s the West to have lost, and by a long shot, the arms race to both Russia and China and yet we are still hell-bent on trying to bully them.

As an ex-commander of the VDV (roughly speaking the Russian equivalent of the US Airborne Divisions including a component equivalent to the US Army Rangers) put it on Russian TV: one of the biggest military lessons of the NATO – Russia war in Ukraine has been that NATO has greatly underestimated Russia, Russia has much overestimated NATO and against a peer adversary NATO is a paper tiger and NATO without the US is a wet paper tiger.

True, all recent French tests were, contrary to the Anglos’, succesful.
But you too have only four ballistic missile submarines and you too have at times struggled (but still less than the British…) to keep the legally required 1 (ONE) of those fully operational at sea.

And your SSBNs too are not on patrol with their full complement of nuclear warheads so in short your nuclear deterrence is frankly risible against a superpower like Russia (which BTW, contrary to what the clown in chief has recently stated, and without taking into account their delivery systems which are not even comparable in quality and capabilities, is THE nuclear superpower, with more stockpiled warheads than BOTH the US and China…).

Another advantage that France has compared to Perfidious Albion is that you have also a small air launched component but, again, against Russia is basically useless since it relies on very few small yield missiles whose range means that your airplanes have to get very close to Russian territory. In fact, they are meant as a “warning shot” and in your official doctrine have no strategic role.

The guy is such an idiot. He doesn’t understand that the US currently has a huge advantage because we have two things that China and Russia don’t… extensive physical data from hundreds and hundreds of physical tests meticulously collected over decades, plus exa-scale supercomputers. This unique combination permits us to test nuclear weapons virtually – something that Russia and China cannot do. If we (and thus they) go back to physical testing we give up this massive advantage that only we posses.

This guy really is a complete idiot.

Those two advantages you site are very outdated.
“This paper compares the STEM PhD pipelines of the United States and China. We find that China has consistently produced more STEM doctorates than the United States since the mid-2000s, and that the gap between the two countries will likely grow wider in the next five years. Based on current enrollment patterns, we project that by 2025 Chinese universities will produce more than 77,000 STEM PhD graduates per year compared to approximately 40,000 in the United States.”

And your last statement is just stupid. Since July 1945, there have been 2,145 nuclear weapons detonated on earth, and we’re still here with all of our fingers & toes. Hell, Russia’s Tsar bomb was 50 megatons.

How did we win the cold war. We out spent them. Causing russia to collapse. . Now Russia/china wants us to spend ourselves into the same position.
If russias hyper sonic missiles are so great. They would be using them in Ukraine with conventional warheads. In more numbers than they have. Kind of like their 5 gen fighter jets.
We dont need a golden fleet. Seems cheap drones are the way to go.

Reagan was at pains to counter the idea of “winning” the cold war.
He wanted to end it.

It wasn’t outspending or Afghanistan that did in the Soviet Union, as all the hare-brained political science elite like to kid themselves. It crumbled under its own internal dynamics, because it was founded on lies, pretending nationality and ethnic, religious & cultural heritage had been overcome, propping up a system nobody had believed in anymore for a generation, with entrenched corrupt bureaucracy unable to respond to economic signals and challenges.

Russia is using hypersonic missiles to great effect. Greater numbers are inefficient when you can lob in cheap Geran drones, cruise missile, and air launched bombs all day long. Hyper sonic maneuvering missiles with depressed ballistic trajectories are used most effectively against surface fleets or against Brussels or Washington, none of which can defend against them, and who have no comparable means or technology of their own.

> Excellent to hear, as that means we Should Be Well Prepared!

– China has carried out 45 nuclear tests.
> Good, there well behind in preparedness perhaps, or maybe better at it.

– “I don’t think testing is necessary to assure reliability of the U.S. nuclear arsenal,” said Gary Samore
> Who cares what he has to say. Let’s speak to the Leaders and follow (not blindly) what they suggest that we do. You know, the ones that are currently in charge at the top.

https://www.environmentalvoter.org/updates/2024-was-landslidefor-did-not-vote

You need to understand that a plurality didn’t vote. Further, it means that out of the pool of eligible voters, slightly more than 2/3 of them did not vote for the current president (closer to 70% did not vote for Harris).

The narrative of a majority being behind a politician (Trump or otherwise) is purely propaganda.

As long as you are using their own territories to test your nuclear weapons, go ahead. Don’t use some faraway islands or atolls to do your testing.

DC was blown up a long time ago, just like NYC, Chicago, St Louis, etc. We are trying to repair the damage, and leave them in a situation where this BS won’t happen again, any time soon anyway… Clean, Safe, Self Sufficient Cities should be the norm!!

The rest of the world has not stopped & ours are old. Supposedly we lost the technology that could put a man on the moon in 1969 make that make sense. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. National Defense are we possibly paying to much? It could be a lot less if we weren’t a global empire and dependent on foreign oil. Armchair quarterbacks who cut to much discover that after the fact when they lose a war or conflict which can bring other compounding costs.

Our national defense is a lot like our national health care, we pay a lot more for a lot less.

We are not dependent on foreign oil! We are an Oil and Gas exporter. We compete with the rest of the world to sell our excess production. This is why we are so insanely aggressive to Russia and trying to stop their oil and gas from getting to market. DUH!

But alas, China, India and Russia have a solid workaround and Trumps little trip did not fix anything.

Point. The U.S. exports more oil than it imports, becoming a net exporter, though it still imports oil to meet domestic demand. As of early 2025, the U.S. exports over 4 million barrels of crude oil per day and imports roughly 30-35% of its total oil consumption. Imports still significant: Despite being a net exporter, the U.S. imports around 30-35% of its total oil consumption to meet the needs of its domestic market. In terms of total petroleum (which includes both crude and refined products), gross imports are around 6.5 million barrels per day, while the net import figure is around -1.64 million barrels per day because the US is a net exporter

Correct ~ the US is a net exporter of crude and natural gas. We do import crude to satisfy our huge refining industry and re-export the refined products. Much of this is because of the type of oil various refineries were built to refine.

If you don’t test nukes, you’re really not sure they’ll work. Theoretically they should, and computer modeling says they will, but for sure? No. North Korea, since they’ve done tests lately, can be sure theirs will work.
Components wear out and old parts need replaced, etc. That said, no reason to start testing until the Russians and Chinese do.

The only sure test is to test them all. Not so good.

So long as Oceania is actively trying to encircle, destabilize, and destroy the RoW, then everything the Oceania regime does militarily is unjustified.

As small consolation, at least the change in name to “Department of War” more accurately describes what they do. But I want my tax dollars to *defend* me, not murder people who aren’t a threat.

How does anyone “religious” or even just humane want anything else?

Flashback to the first couple weeks of Trump’s term: “Donald Trump said he would seek to cut billions of dollars from the Pentagon budget as the next big target in the effort led by Elon Musk to slash spending by US government agencies.”

US refusal to stop the arms race with Russia a few decades ago has now resulted in Russia coming up with unstoppable hypersonic missiles and they are way ahead of the US in the technology.

The US is now figuring out how to blow hundreds of billions of dollars on a “Golden Dome” which will never stop a hypersonic.

I’ve said it on this site and will iterate, “I seriously doubt Donald Trump has ever support legislation that didn’t specifically benefit DJT.” On a 1 – 10 scale, Trump is a “1” (tragically, Harris, Biden, Barack Hussein and Dubya earn a solid “-2” for their “contributions”).
Don’t waste your keystrokes labeling me with TDS. I’ve voted for that man three times (not a reflection of Trump, just that Biden & Harris posed that much of a larger threat to the formerly “greatest nation on earth”).
I’ve seen many extraordinarily intelligent individuals lament this nation’s plight, but have yet to see one offering ACTION.
Any Patrick Henry’s amongst this august group?

It is extraordinarily difficult to arrive at sound conclusions when the information we’re served is so extraordinarily unreliable. Can a “Reasonable Man” conclude ANY “facts” proffered by those in power (or seeking it) are transparent, meaningful and in the best interests of this nation and globe?

Tit for tat strategy. Russia said they will start testing again so we say we will to. Simple game theory.

Those who have studied Game Theory would recognize many of Trump’s moves by him and his team. Some of them are quite sophisticated.

oh so we’re going to waste trillions on nukes now? Will that come out of the social security and medicare budget?

You’d rather fire untested weapons at your enemy?

My personal opinion… the US should declare absolute neutrality and do what it does best: manufacture arms. The US should sell arms to both sides on an equal footing (no favorites), with the proviso that any attack on the US will be met by total destruction of the offending nation.

With the arms sales, and a much smaller military (all the US needs for total destruction are enough nuclear weapons in space) the Fed deficit is easily paid off and we live happily ever after.

Never sell arms to a country or region with a population larger than yours.
Never sell too many arms to a country you are dependent on.
Never sell more arms than in your own gun cabinet.

If you’ve pondered something for 10 years and haven’t figured it out, nothing I say will help you. But you’re doing it wrong. It’s not about “pondering,” it’s about exploring, adapting, and adventure. If necessary it’s also about overcoming your biases, your “institutionalization” and your shortcomings.

Get on a plane, land somewhere, look around, talk to people, try to live free and leave the baggage behind. People move overseas every day and the number is accelerating. There are 138 countries on earth and 7 continents, it’s a big planet, most of it lives in peace, start there.

Most countries are not at peace.

Why are you still here?

“Name one place where you would actually, truly choose to move to!!”

As I have just written in the comment section of another recent article asking a similar question:

For those desperate to escape the utter madness and dystopia ALL of the West is plunging into to live in a safe and stable place where to have a NORMAL life for themselves and for their family, now and into the foreseeable future (not the “holiday” destinations for childless pensioners to retire, which are what’s usually mentioned and are in fact also mentioned in this thread) the choice should be obvious: the Russian Federation if you are a white European wishing to live in a culturally European society and China if you are of Oriental decent and feel more culturally compatible with an Asian country with Asian values and lifestyle.

I myself (a 51yo ex-expat from Italy who has lived and worked all over the world for over 15 years including 5.5 years in the US, even had a so called Green Card) am in the final stages of moving (back again and this time for good) to Russia, my wife (who is from the Donbas where we also have an apartment but we are not moving there, we are moving to “pre-2014” Russia) and children have already moved there this summer and I am in Italy to complete the sale of my house and car and the transfer of all of the money, which will not be easy.
I am done with the West.

I fortunately escaped from Stasi and nazi Eastern Europe and the last place I would move to is Russia.

Good luck with your journey.

And good luck to us in America with the coming muslimation of our country. Shariah law and taqueria will be the death of us.

If you think that 2025 Russia has anything to do with Communism or “Nazism” you know jack shit about Russia and Russians.
If that’s what you fear most you are much closer to it in the West than basically anywhere else in the world today…

“Good luck with your journey.
And good luck to us in America with the coming muslimation of our country. Shariah law and taqueria will be the death of us.”

If you are in the US it’s you the one needing luck… and a lot of it.

Islamization is the last of your problems, the unending immigration you are subjected to in the States is only in minimal part Muslim and a bit of Sharia would do wonders, anyway, to cure some of the worst diseases which are actually going to be the death of you: out of control feminism, LGBTQ+ utter madness and all of the rest of family (and ultimately society) destroying lunacies which have demographically and culturally doomed the West.

The US has some unique traits which distance it from the rest of the West and for a while I thought it had some hope of saving itself but in the end I saw the writing on the wall and got out of dodge long ago, let my Green Card expire and looked for much greener pastures…

Looking at the shitshow it has precipitated into especially since the stolen election in 2020 it’s clear I made the right choice, the US is today peak Clown World (and the UK and the EU are peak evil, satanic, dystopian insanity).
