Handelsblatt reports Porsche’s first electric car is called “Taycan”.
The oriental term means “lively, young horse” and attack with it the heraldic animal in the Porsche logo, a jumping horse. The Taycan is scheduled to go into production in 2019 and become a strong competitor to the Tesla Model S.
The four-door electric sports car Taycan accelerates with more than 600 hp in less than 3.5 seconds to 100 km/h [62.14 MPH] . With a battery charge he is said to come 500 kilometers [310.69 miles], and thanks to an 800-volt architecture, he can recharge at fast charging stations in four minutes for 100 kilometers [62.14 miles] range power.
All car manufacturers are currently working under pressure on many new electric cars to overcome the teething troubles: the short range, the long charging time and ultimately the much higher price than comparable petrol or diesel cars.

The name, which was announced at an event celebrating the automaker’s 70th anniversary, roughly translates to “lively young horse” in German, a reference to the leaping horse at the heart of the company’s crest. Also, it’s apparently pronounced “tie-con,” but it’s probably already doomed to a lifetime of mispronunciations.
The internet, as it is wont to do, immediately started dragging Porsche for the new name.

Add me to the list of those who thinks Taycan is a poor name with an even worse official pronunciation.
That aside, I await the price. Any guesses?
Somewhere along the lines, a manufacturer will produce a nice car that will be the end of Tesla. Is this it or will Trump ban sales in the US?

I agree with Trump fair trade beats our so called free trade. We allow things in no tariff or low tariff and our trading partners screw us royal on our stuff. There is nothing out there that we need to import. They need us a hell of a lot more than we need them. This will be a short trade war or we will be making more stuff here. Now if we have the same ability to send our stuff tariff free overseas, that is the best answer.

Those signs were all taken down years ago when they finally realized there is no realistic chance of a cellphone starting a fire at a gas station.
Yeah, why can’t they use something non-flammable like gasoline…oh,wait…
since porsche is commonly mispronounced, why not have a new model fated to the same?

You are right, oh Sweet Kenny — it is the individual using the phone who generates the static electricity, not the cell phone itself. Nevertheless, many gas stations have signposts warning against cell phone use while refueling, because fire is fire. Presumably, future electric recharging stations will have signs warning about the dangers of handling live 800 volt connectors in the rain.
But cell phones have caught on fire from lithium batteries, but there are no lithium batteries in cars…oh, wait…
Since Porsche is not in production yet, but Model S is, then I think it would be fairer to compare Porsche Taycan to Tesla Roadster 2 –
The Porsche Taycan looks like a sportier Tesla Model S P100D (the super version of the Model S). Porsche will probably ask north of $130,000. It is not going to be a mainstream vehicle. Sales will not move the needle in the context of the broader car market. The prospective buyers will not care if a tariff applies to this or not.

No cell phone has ever caused a fire at a gas station from generating “static electricity” in use – I didn’t see the /s – do some research.
Names in Europe are all very odd to the English speaking… They make perfect sense if you’re German or Dutch but for an international company you’d expect advertising slogans and product names to be clever and somehow universal. However if your market is China, the only country that can afford your wares, a name that works best there is a good plan.

This Porsche is coming out earlierst in 2019. Then Porsche will go through the same pain that Tesla went back in 2010-2012. And hopefully by 2020, Porsche will finally have a production ready EV.
Prices will start at $80-90k. My ‘new’ pickup cost $3600. I’d rather have 25 vehicles like my truck than one electric car no matter who makes it.
I keep thinking about pulling into a gas station and seeing a young woman with one hand on the gas pump and the other hand on her static electric generating cell phone. I drove on.
Now we all have to think about young women with 800 volt cables in their hands … maybe in the rain.
What would the development of electric vehicles look like if it were not for taxpayer subsidies for wealthy buyers and government mandates forcing the premature adoption of the technology?
Play thing, that’s all, for those with more money than sense.
