Trump Offers Democrats a Dreamer Deal in Return for the Wall

Today, President Trump offered a 3-Year Extension of Protection for ‘Dreamers’ in exchange for $5.7 billion for wall. Pelosi has already ruled it out as a ‘non-starter’.

President Trump made a new offer Saturday to Democrats aimed at ending the 29-day partial government shutdown that would extend deportation protections for some immigrants in exchange for $5.7 billion in border wall funding.

Trump’s proposal is designed to ramp up pressure on Democrats by offering a reprieve on his attempts to end Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and temporary protected status (TPS) for immigrants from some Latin American and African nations.

Under the new proposal, the administration would allow those programs to continue — addressing a key concern of Democrats and some moderate Republicans.

It would also grant hundreds of millions of dollars for humanitarian assistance and drug detection policy and call for the hiring of thousands of new law enforcement agents to be deployed on the southern border.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) called it a “non-starter” and implored Trump to take action to open the government.

“The President must sign these bills to re-open government immediately and stop holding the American people hostage with this senseless shutdown,” Pelosi said.

A senior House Democratic aide said Democrats were not consulted on the plan, which the aide said is “not a compromise” because it still includes Trump’s demand for $5.7 billion to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border — the request that led to the shutdown.

Polls

The polls all agree: Americans don’t like shutdown and they blame Trump

  • About half of Americans (51%) said it would be unacceptable if the only way to end the shutdown was to pass a bill that includes Trump’s requested funding for the border wall, according to a Pew Research Center poll released on Wednesday. On the other side, 29% said it would be unacceptable for the only end to the shutdown to come via a bill that does not include the president’s requested funding for the wall.
  • Multiple other polls show similar sentiments, including a Quinnipiac University finding that 61% of voters would support a bill funding new border security measures without funding a wall, including 36% of Republicans, 78% of Democrats and two-thirds of independents.
Seven-in-ten Americans said that shutting down the federal government in order to reach an agreement on government policy is a bad strategy and only 22% thought it was a good strategy, according to a PBS NewsHour/Marist poll.
  • Support for the wall is still low, at around four-in-ten, across all the polls (40% support in Pew, 43% in Quinnipiac, 39% in CNN/SSRS and 42% in ABC/Washington Post).
  • The Pew survey found that only about a third of Americans (34%) said that expanding the wall would lead to a major reduction in illegal immigration to the US and, according to Quinnipiac’s poll, 43% of voters feel a wall is an effective way to protect the border.

Coulter Blasts Trump

We voted for Trump but Got Jeb Bush says Ann Coulter.

Meanwhile, as long as the public blames Trump for the government shutdown, the shutdown will continue.

Eventually, the Democrats will get a package they can accept, Trump will agree to fund the government and hold talks, or Congress will override a Trump veto.

The thing that is crazy about this is that I think everyone, on both sides, knows that walls actually do work, albeit they need to be supplemented with other things. You put locks on your house because they work, but you supplement them with a security system, perhaps neighborhood monitoring, and certainly a local police force. You don’t trust the locks alone, but you also don’t trust the other things and then do without locks. The craziest thing of all is when someone makes an argument that “walls don’t work”, and then cites the Berlin wall, a wall that was extremely effective, though I grant that it’s effectiveness was greatly supplemented by the fact that guards routinely shot and killed when someone tried to escape.

So, yes, obviously walls do make it easier to control the border, though they need to be supplemented by human border patrol agents, and high tech things as well. No, the $5b is not a significant portion of the annual budget. So, if the fight really isn’t over walls, and it really isn’t over money, what is it over? It’s over politics. Both sides seem to think they will benefit in the long run from making the other side look bad.

Carl you had it all correct until the last sentence. Trump really just wants The Wall; the dems will do anything to make trouble for Trump. When Obama was pres they were for The Wall.

Pelosi has Trump by the nuts and he put them right in her hand. Moron. She took down GWB with less ammo and he spent 4 years as a lame duck.

“Oh Mish, Mish, Mish. Trump knows the DemonRats will vote against this. He will look like the bigger person because he offered a compromise.”

Spare me the sap. You think I don’t understand he may do that. But it comes with repercussions and Trump knows that.

Declare an emergency, build the wall as a symbol of America’s commitment to the rule of law. You can’t just walk into my country any more than you can just walk into my house and help yourself to my stuff. Present yourself at my back door, identify yourself and state your case. If it’s reasonable, I’ll check you out and consider helping you. If not, you can be on your way and try the next country. Or, you can go back to your place of origin, get your fellow caravaners together and try to fix it. I am not the cause of or responsible for your problems.

You may not personally be, but our country is the cause of many of central americas problems.

The wall is security theater to gain the support of cowardly rubes, and distract them from the impending impeachment of their cult leader. It won’t keep anybody out.

Zardoz, it’s funny that you mention that the wall won’t work. As I was watching the news last night, they broke to an “embedded” reporter with the new caravan attempting to traverse from Honduras and other SA countries thru Mexico. He stated they were stalled at the Mexican Border by the “fence” until the Mexican Authorities opened the gates for approx. 1 hour and let anyone thru. Sooo, if walls won’t keep anybody out, why was the caravan stalled at the Mexican border “that has a wall” until the gates were opened. Just a thought

“The polls all agree: Americans don’t like shutdown and they blame Trump”

I don’t know why anyone, except a furloughed government employee/contractor, would care much about a government shutdown, but I do give Trump credit for shutting it down even if I disagree (mildly) with his wall.

I agree. I am happy to see the shutdown go on indefinitely but the wall issue is not one I care much about. Stop the hiring and benefits of illegals and they will slow to a trickle.

It’s interesting the proposed extension expires AFTER the elections. Probably to minimize the issue during the campaign.

That override will NOT happen unless many Republicans Senators decide they do not want to get re-elected.

Oh Mish, Mish, Mish. Trump knows the DemonRats will vote against this. He will look like the bigger person because he offered a compromise. Once they strike it down, he will declare an emergency and build the wall anyway. Trump knows what he’s doing.

Funny how Trump never ever mentions the real driving force behind this… The UN. started a long time ago.

So caravans of thousands coming and low support for a wall? What are they putting in our drinking water? I just dont get it. I realize theres other alternatives but I seriously doubt any of those will be enacted either. Yet people continually complain about illegals, well except for those that get votes from them. And im still baffled how that even happens? Im about ready to pull the plug and move out of the US. Most likely to overall ****hole but at least I wont have to watch the US become one. Of course, if you drive thru many of our major cities were already there.

Working really hard to unpack all of that. When you do leave Kansas, please let us know what country you chose and how it’s working out.

Didn’t watch the address, but checked the ZH comments at the end. Judging by how underwhelmed they were, this appears to be a nothingburger.

Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh also declared the deal a non-starter, so Trump will be vetoing his own deal.
