In the simmering feud with House speaker Pelosi, Trump Delays State of the Union Address.

President Trump said late Wednesday that he wouldn’t deliver his State of the Union address until the government reopened, following days of high-profile squabbling after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi urged the president last week to delay his speech.

Earlier in the day, Mr. Trump said in a letter that he planned to deliver the annual address from the House chamber on Tuesday, as is tradition. Mrs. Pelosi rebuffed his plan, telling him he couldn’t deliver the address until the government reopened, which prompted the president to say he would seek alternative venues.

In a tweet late Wednesday, Mr. Trump said he had abandoned that research and that he would deliver his address “when the Shutdown is over.” He added: “I am not looking for an alternative venue for the SOTU Address because there is no venue that can compete with the history, tradition and importance of the House Chamber.” He said he looked forward to delivering a “great” address in the “near future!”

Advantage Pelosi

If this were a tennis match, I would announce "Advantage Pelosi".

My opinion has nothing to do with the wall per se.

Rather, Trump was slated to give a SOTU address that was 100% guaranteed to be about the need for a wall. He can no longer give that speech.

Who Will Blink?

Sooner or later, Trump, Pelosi, or Congress will have to blink.

  1. Trump can give in with temporary funding.
  2. Trump can give up totally.
  3. Trump can go nuclear and declare a national emergency which may not hold muster with the Supreme Court.
  4. Pelosi can give in.
  5. Congress can get fed up and send a bill to Trump that he either signs or risks getting overridden.

Those are the only five choices.

Number 3 is debatable and may depend on the outcome, but I believe Trump loses on all but the highly unlikely number 4.
