Massive Republican infighting between Trump and fiscal conservatives is underway.
Fast-Changing Events
In the short time it took me to write my previous post on postponing a fiscal decision until net year, House Republicans worked out a new deal.
However, that deal may be dead on arrival already.
It would need near-unanimous Republican House support (or Democrat buy-ins), plus a majority in the Senate that Republicans don’t have.
GOP Strikes a New Spending Deal
Politico reports GOP Strikes a New Spending Deal that Includes Disaster Aid and Raising the Debt Limit.
Republicans have struck a deal on a short-term government spending patch and potential debt limit increase, according to two GOP lawmakers meeting in Speaker Mike Johnson’s office Thursday afternoon.
“There is an agreement,” said Rep. Stephanie Bice (R-Okla.). Appropriations Chair Tom Cole (R-Okla.) confirmed there was a deal among Republicans, though the news caught House Democrats by surprise.
Trump endorsed the deal in a Truth Social post, saying Johnson and the House “have come to a very good Deal for the American People.”
“All Republicans, and even the Democrats, should do what is best for our Country and vote “YES” for this Bill, TONIGHT!”
Good Deal, Not
Rep. Chip Roy responds to Trump calling for a primary challenge against him
“We’re working right now on how to actually cut spending, which is what the voters sent me to Washington to do.“
Hooray!
For an amusing video of Chip Roy on X stating the above.
Cramnibus Swamp Christmas Tree
Also consider Chip Roy’s comment “We should not vote on the CRamnibus less than 24 hours after getting bill text.”
“This has become a Christmas Tree for the Swamp and should not pass.”
Once again, I side with Chip Roy.
Rand Paul Chimes In
Senator Rand Paul announces he will delay the passage of the massive Omnibus Spending Bill if it clears the House, potentially leading to a government shutdown if not passed by Friday.
From X
Sen. Rand Paul criticized Speaker Mike Johnson over the recently unveiled 1,547-page government funding bill, calling it “full of pork” and labeling Johnson “a weak, weak man.” The bill includes controversial provisions, such as pay raises for Congress and funding for organizations accused of conservative censorship. Paul condemned the deal, negotiated behind closed doors, for exacerbating the national debt. House Freedom Caucus members also expressed discontent, calling the bill a “Cramnibus.” Johnson’s leadership faces increasing scrutiny from within his party.
Cramnibus Events to Come
Just a little explanation about what you are about to see. The House Republican leadership is going to vote on this bill on suspension of the rules.
Suspension requires 2/3 majority. Meaning they will need A LOT of Dems to vote for it in order to pass it. When it fails — and it will, most likely — the GOP leadership will go to Rules and get a rule and then vote on it again. The second time will be under a simple majority as long as they can get a rule out of the Rules Committee. The first vote allows them to see who is against it and whip it.
The above thanks to @JakeSherman founder of PunchBowlNews.
Ridiculous Theater Dead on Arrival
This is ridiculous and unproductive infighting if the bill is doomed in the Senate anyway.
We have to Reduce Federal Spending

Most of the time I feel isolated and alone pointing out the massive hypocrisy of MAGA true believers and Trump himself.
So, I appreciate the above Tweet by EllyKayUSA on reducing spending. Well done!
Go Home for Christmas
Rep Thomas Massie says Go Home for Christmas
People call me “NostraThomas” for accurately predicting @SpeakerJohnson would use the Christmas recess to force a massive spending bill through Congress.
After claiming he would not, Johnson is embracing a D.C. tradition that’s nearly as old as decorating Christmas trees.
Actually, the tradition of political lies has been forever. The hypocrisy this go around is enormous.
Johnson on the Continuing Resolution

“We don’t normally like the CR, but in this case it make sense,” said Johnson.
What an F*wad. This was the only continuing resolution that made no sense. I back a government shutdown now because this is the only one where Republicans could realistically deliver.
Dear Congress, Please Shut Down
I stand with my previous post Dear Congress, Please Shut Down, There’s No Need to Address the Budget this Year
The Government can survive until at least March and possibly May. This is the first time I have ever backed a government shutdown.
Q. Why can a shutdown work this time?
A: Math
In 2023 and 2024, it was idiotic to expect anything other than humiliation when a few House members thought they could control legislation with Democrat control over the Senate and a Democrat in the White House as well.
Trump will take office at the presidential inauguration on Monday, 20 January 2025, giving Republicans as trifecta in the Senate, House, and White House.
For at least a few months, the Treasury can make sure all key government expenses are paid.
A Good Deal?!
Trump called the new proposal a “Very good Deal for the American People.”
Dear President-elect and Elon Musk. How the hell is this a good deal?
What’s the Hurry?
The disappointing answer to that question is Trump is going to propose massive increases in the budget and the deficit.
Why else does he need Republicans to remove the debt ceiling?

Fiscal conservative is an oxymoron. Deficits don’t seem to matter for the R’s until they pretend it does and then they increase the deficit even more. Oddly it seems like the best solution is a D president with a mix of R/D senate/house. These are the times when the economy has done the best for most of the people. If you have an R president with R house/senate, they are likely to deregulate like Bush did in 2000. That lead to multiple disasters on multiple fronts both domestically and internationally. I don’t know when, but this coming R president is going to leave the country in a ditch just like he did in 2020. His R predecessors did the same thing in 2008, 1992 and 1988.
This is why loyalty to a politician or a party is evil. Just call out bs. Trump’s wrong and his head is up his hindside on this.
Chip Roy is right, and they all need to fall in behind him immediately.
“Trump Threatens to Take Down Chip Roy”
Does Trump threaten to take down Desantis, anymore? It’s Trump’s schtick to respond that way. Of coarse the debt ceiling is going to rise. Never any doubt about that. Peace through strength isn’t cheap. The pig in the python is the entitlement programs. No one dares touch the third rail, though the PREP Act made a bit of a dent in the senior population.
Just when I thought the Federal government couldn’t get any more dysfunctional…
Senators suggest swapping Speaker Mike Johnson for Elon Musk
America is no longer functionally a democracy but rather an oligarchy
Who meets at the WEF every year? The elites who plan to run the world. What functional democracy? Do Americans go to the polls to vote for the U.S. government to plot regime changes in foreign countries? After 9/11, Wesley Clark said he was handed a plan of 7 wars in 5 years. Last on the list, Iran. Ron Paul and Bernie Sanders have been blocked from being the party nominees for president. Not functionally democratic.
It’s obviously better to have an outsider non-politician as speaker, you are an idiot.
Don’t worry. The UniParty has 26 hours to add a zero to that streamlined 115 page bill. I’m not a fan of some of what Roy has said & done in the past, but he does seem to be a fiscal conservative. Let’s see how he votes, when the bloated American Relief Act 2.0 comes up for vote @ 10 pm tomorrow.
I’m with Rand Paul. Let’s make Musk Speaker of the House.
Just what we need, and ego maniac in the White House and another (Musk) as Speaker of the House. What could possibly go wrong in that setup?
Not nearly as many things as have gone wrong in the last 4 years, Woodsie.
I won’t even be close. There’s going to be a lot of in-fighting if Trump takes on the swamp like MAGA wants him to. Why in God’s green earth would you sarcastically think otherwise?
I’d much rather see the GOP fighting than just handing out blank checks.
Not much, dickhead.
For those that voted for Biden and Harris, maybe you fellas should sit this one out.
Trump’s demand rejected by too many Republicans. Lol!
Love watching this shit show! Downside is I’m eating too much popcorn!
Isn’t trump’s demand… it’s the demand of an illegal alien that bought a pardon.
Trump is the bottom in this bromance.
RINOs. If you’re going to root for these drifters, at least use the correct term.
I agree, but with Trump calling for a suspension of the debt ceiling through 2027, I think we all need to take a moment and ponder how serious he is with reigning in spending. If he doesn’t call for passing 12 budgets on day one, then the chances of his last term being a shit show spike to at least 90%. He’ll be fighting with Roy, McConnell, Murkowski, Thune, et all the way until midterms, when we’ll lose the House.
Is that because you’re a fat bastard?
It’ll be interesting watching a Chip Roy or two drag The Don kicking and screaming and insulting all the way to a modicum of ACTUAL fiscal conservatism, given the slim majority. Of course on-the-spectrum-boy will write the X Check to primary him. Must be nice to be able to purchase your influence perch in DC. Oh, and rumor has it he wants Don to change the rules to not have fatalities from self-driving cars reported.
Source?
Link I posted was awaiting approval but the story is “What Elon Bought” on Ep Autos Dot Com.
You’ve never provided a source in your life. You don’t deserve one.
Lol. I link things all the time. I guess you are new here
Elon is president… Donald is just the First Lady.
Great to see the new boogeyman for the left. Putin for 4 years. Then fascism and taxi and whatever. Never works. No Musk. The people rejected your lies. Like Biden just has a stutter
Elon and Donna?? (Total tongue in cheek)
He definitely has Donna breasts…
I will hate it for the voters that get hurt, but I admit I’m looking forward to the upcoming drama you laid out that will occur over the next two years.
Remember how easily the two Democrats Manchin and Sinema kept Biden from achieving all his specific bills/goals? It will be quite easy for a couple of smart/enterprising (?) or patriotic Republicans within the House to tell Trump to pound sand until they get what their specific constituents need. And then they can retire with money (?) or patriotic pride just like Manchin and Sinema did.
And there are so many Republicans in the House and the majority will be so slim that there will probably be fistfights on the floor to jockey for the primary sand-pounding sound bites. It will certainly be a reap-what-you-sow ongoing two-year TV drama
Blame the democrats for this. They tried to shove Harris down your throat after pushing poor Joe out. They had no right. No you reap what you sow.
Why would I blame anyone for my own lot in life?
Every person gets a vote, and the voters chose a Republican House with a Manchin/Sinema slim majority. They also chose Trump. Now no excuses for the Democrats ‘causing’ any problems (although I’ve already seen you blaming them for the voting fiasco today). All Congressional considerations have the capability to be passed now on the Republican dime. The voters will have two years to truly see what they’ve voted for. No skin off my back
Trump wants to remove the deficit ceiling all together.
These people are all criminals and will rob the state, the economy, and a civilization blind for the ‘next thing’ this month.
Disgusting.
When the governments stops spending money and lets the people KEEP theirs, they invest it and spend it on what they WANT and what is needed.
Stop spending you parasites
The debt cieling is a joke anyway. They have raised it every time for what 15 years? It is an imaginary useless cieling. What good is a debt cieling you can endlessly raise? A REAL debt cieling? That couldn’t be lifted? Yeah, now THAT I would be for.
Hey Mish,
Can we start counting the hypocrites that want to get rid of the debt ceiling now that Trump hates it? Just as you wrote
#1 right here. #2?
They have no identity of their own, only worship for Elon’s Ho.
Back in the 90’s Newt used it to shut down the government & extract concessions from the Dems. If RINOs aren’t willing to shut down the government, then it’s definitely a joke. Back in the day, it had its purpose, but we have RINOs & the UniParty nowadays.
Who did you vote for? Because this is exactly the ‘shake-up’ and the ‘tear-down’ the MAGA voters wanted, supposedly
They’ve moved on from spending to straight up theft. Own it, trumphumpers.
I’m good with the federal government collapsing on itself. Best thing that happened to USSR.
I don’t claim to know. But I would be curious on who Chip Roys donors are, who his handlers are, who is benefactors are. The devil is in the details with this stuff. Who benefits from the stances he is taking? I’ve heard rumors Pence has his ear, can’t confirm.
Hes not fan of Trump. RINOs all over the place
What I thought. RINO never Trumper. Makes sense. I think he was a big DeSantis or Nikki guy, can’t remember which. I’m sure he “likes to cut spending” as long as his donors & handlers get their piece in the process. In whatever way that may be. Smells like Koch Brothers crowd. Devil is in the details.
Calling Chip Roy a RINO is like calling Stalin a monarchist.
lol Trump and MAGA are literally the definition of a RINO
Yeah pence and Liz Cheney saying you are a stand up guy. That Roy must be good
William Proxmire has his ear, too.
Clean CR. Dems don’t want it they can keep the shutdown for Bidens last month. A fitting end to the worst Presidency in history
Well, Trump is not even President yet and he’s already suffered his first defeat. Republican House had the ‘unclean’ CR lined up and he tanked it. Then forced them to insert his last-minute call for removal of deficit ceiling (and a vote without time for people to read it) and it failed on bipartisan lines.
He’s definitely shaking up the status quo for ya, I’ll give him that. Hope all the MAGA voters are OK with the final consequences. I’m not flying over Christmas so personally I could care less if TSA employees don’t show up for work since they may not be paid
Chip Roy is a loud mouth. When it comes time to vote he votes for the abominable budgets and continuing resolutions.
duh, House along R-party-line should pass a minimal/responsible CR; if not passed by Senate and signed by Pres, who’s fault is the gov’t shutdown?
Let D’s shut down gov’t until Jan 20th … then let orange tremendousness reign!
(and don’t retroactively pay anyone who did WFH)
Stop fighting with Chip over right-handed or left-handed shoelace tying.
Bwahahahaha….Trump’s 2nd term starting out looking alot like his 1st. All’s he does is finger point and name call anyone who doesn’t kiss his ring. He’s a terrible negotiator.
He may well double his 6.7 trillion deficit, as all the billionaires in his cabinet help themselves to pork entrees.
It was just shy of 8 Trillion
There’s no way Schumer & the current senate will do a debt ceiling extension now. Trump doesn’t want it to happen this spring, but that’s the way it’s going to happen. The GOP edge in the House is so thin, they won’t be able to do shit. Maybe he should leave Israel-Firsters Elise Stefanik and Mike Waltz in the House rather than plucking them out to work in the administration.
Fun part is if Government is forced to shut down it will happen under Mr. Bidens watch.
Biden should have drone struck this clown years ago.
ah you miss that subtle touch of irony.
Without the press covering for all the lies, Schumer, Jeffries, Biden are marshmallows.
Press has renounced the coverup clause they had with Dems.
There is no battle… it’s all fake.
Who Runs the World? And how do they exercise control?https://fasteddynz.substack.com/p/who-runs-the-world
The proposal is 116 pages long vs over 1500 previously so that is much better. You can actually see what’s in it. Now if bills like this catch on then we might actually see where the money goes. Politically speaking this is a minefield for the members of Congress who are used to making bills so long and complicated that no one understood. It is going to be difficult for them to justify their opposition. This is well thought out. It forces them to choose which is something politicians hate to do.
Hakeem Jeffries said “Hell No” so they are now the ones faced with shutting down the Government as the spending package is too reduced for their taste. LOL
Republicans will always get the blame for a government shut down because they openly claim to be in favor of less government.
Reports so far is this went right over the heads of those who wanted porker Bill passed and business as usual.
Let Schumer and Jeffries squirm on this.
Trumps not even sworn in yet and at this Fight weighin its a shoving match already.
And MSM won’t carry their message … only Elon and tRump seem to break through.
Well, that PLUS the fact that the current Speaker of the House – who actually collects and submits the 1500+ pages for a vote – IS a Republican. You can’t vote on a ‘good’ bill if it’s not submitted for a vote
They are about telling people how they can dress and act, and who they can have sex with. The kleptocrats use this to rob them blind. It’d be sad if it wasn’t so funny.
Hay-keem has no say …House is 219-211.
Hay-keem has no power, Nancy still boss: Oversight == Gerry Connolly not AOC.
Hay-keem no old lady.
Maxine Waters, 86 ranking member on the Financial Services Committee
Rose DeLauro, 81 will helm the Democrats’ presence in Appropriations.
Since the “Market” is supposed to be final arbiter as to buying all the debt and Powell and Friends are reducing their holdings (or so they say) this is going to be nothing but a barnyard rooster fight.
I think let them feathers fly.
Orange man does have a valid point as all the prior debt ceilings just ended up increasing spending anyways. So what’s the point in having a debt ceiling if it always gets bypassed.
Free market people should be breathlessly waiting for that free market to decide when too much is too much and requires higher rates.
By the way I like Chip Roy but since he is a small minority he does not really count for much.
Actually, it will only take 2 dissents in January to block anything
Maybe you will get your wish.
Moderate/conservative democrat House members could name their price for a vote or two.
Santos would have bent over in a skinny minute.
I see 219-211. Some D’s have stepped-down.
https://pressgallery.house.gov/member-data/party-breakdown
He is no longer orange so you have to find a new name.
Stinky Pinky has a nice ring.
If you are in kindergarten maybe. You can do better than that.
Well, F**kface von Clownstick is kind of formal… and grade school humor is the only kind trumphumpers understand. Not my fault I have a special needs audience.
That”s high school locker-room. Better but no cigar. No wonder he runs rings around you people.
You got me chuckling.
I like your suggestion because I like markets.
My guess is Trump and the incoming Republican Congress will cut taxes and either maintain or even increase spending, so the deficit will blow through the roof.
And yes, long-term market interest rates will likely keep increasing as they have since the election was decided. We’ll get to see if the voters like that outcome.
