Trump Will Create His Own Social Media Platform, What’s His Chance of Success?

Completely Redefine the Game

President Trump will be “returning to social media in two or three months” with “his own platform” that will “completely redefine the game” and attract “tens of millions” of new users.

As far as “redefining the game” goes, I would say almost no chance.

But who gets gets to decide? And on what basis? Trump will of course say he redefined the game.

A Fan Prays

Someone Delusional About Vast Majority

Subscription Model?

A Cynic Responds

The idea of Trump social media platform sounds as viable as Trump Steaks, Trump University, Trump Casino Atlantic City… how long can one discuss ‘Her emails’ or ‘Voter Fraud’?

The above comment sums up my opinion too.

Trump’s Tweets had meaning as president. The media loved to rip them or discuss them.

Now? On a New Platform?

It’s not impossible. But it’s far more likely success will be in the eyes of the beholder.

What’s the Measure of Success?

Users? Ad revenue? Subscription income? Actual profit? Trump’s say so?

Those who love Trump will see this as a huge success no matter what it does. Those who hate Trump will find a way to criticize it.

Assuming it this new media even happens, let’s see how it does for users, engagement, ad revenue, income, and profit.

Anything that tries to beat twitter will become twitter from a censorship perspective, there’s no such thing a free speech without heavy handed moderators. Good luck anyway breaking into the internet cartel.

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

In essence you are saying “We will see.” My view is that of Voltaire who said “I Disapprove of What You Say, But I Will Defend to the Death Your Right to Say It” when he learned in 1753 that a book that he thought was total bullshit had been banned by the French Parliament. Those who want to ban people because of their ideas are showing their lack of confidence in their own ideas and feel that the only way for their ideas to survive is to eliminate all others. It is a sign of weakness and explains their tendency to entertain totalitarian solutions to their problem of credibility.

When the idea is “replace democracy with a hereditary dictatorship of absolute morons, then kill all liberals” there’s some serious liability in promoting that. People with this idea get pitched out the same as people with the idea they should be able to wave around a pistol in a crowded bar. Sure, they PROBABLY won’t shoot anybody, but as a bar owner are you gonna take that chance.

You have the right to free speech. You don’t have the right to people’s attention.

Doug78

You are mixing up free speech with a pistol in a bar. There is no tie between them. In the Old South before the Civil War we saw the same closing of the mind to uncomfortable dissenting opinions. They could not stand that some people said that slavery was evil so they shut down abolitionist papers and ran anyone against slavery out of the South using the same justification every time that free speech was dangerous. We have had free speech from the beginning and we are still here. Today is no different. Some people just use limiting free speech as an excuse to impose their will because they get kick out of it. They are just dopamine addicts.

You don’t seem to recognize that the internet isn’t a public place. It isn’t like standing on a public corner and holding a placard or protesting. The internet is mostly a private entity of platforms that owners control. You aren’t really this stupid.

Doug78
Doug78

To boot someone off your platform is fine but if you use your monopoly power to prevent that person from being heard from another platform then you are using your dominate position to restrict free speech. Lots of people like you use the “private company” argument to justify what they do. The Robber Barons of the 19th century after having established the oil and train monopolies said the same thing. Fortunately Teddy Roosevelt and others saw what they really were and voted legislation to break them up and reintroduce competition. The same will happen to to Twitter, Facebook and others. It’s just a matter of time. Of course since you are probably employed by them or have ties to them you would have to support their views in order to remain employed or in business.

You seem to think that “free speech” means free and automatic access to any and every media outlet to promote your ideas.

Of course, Twitter can boot you out. Of course you can publish your own paper or make your own social media platform. The boundary between speech and incitement can then be legally tested. But don’t expect that you can ride freely on the shoulders of others in the promotion of your beliefs.

Another conservative, complaining on how poorly they are treated when they can’t get others to carry their water.

When has Trump last if ever organically built whole business from scratch. Trump is simply hoping, maybe praying a current outfit give him a cut and lets him attach his name to it. I doubt its happening. Trump also talked about starting a 3rd political party until he realized it was hard work

It seems that with censorship emerging everywhere, and more and more people sensitive and unable to tolerate more and more things, that social medias will appear for each political, sexual, racial tendency, that will permit only people of their side. And in the end, no place for confrontation of ideas.

The thrill of posting on social media is the kick that one gets from safely insulting/burning your ideologic opponent through the release of electrons. How many times does one thrill at the act of saying, “yup, that’s so true…”? Social media without the antagonism is a bore.

Out of the 100 or so I’ve worked with, I have only met two trumplings. Quite a few libertarians, and the rest just kind of middle of the road and shocked at the stupidity inherent in our political system, embarrassed to even discuss it.

One of the trumplings was a fairly good developer, and the other was exactly what you’d expect: Obese, incompetent, and spending most of his time blaming others for his mistakes.

Intelligence and trump humping are a rare combo.

Trump could have probably attracted enough people to Parler to make it a viable competitor to Twitter. Competition is a always a good thing (except when it happens to me – jk). Certainly we do need viable competitors to Google, Facebook, and Twitter. I fear for the freedom of speech if we don’t have them.

Trump starting up something new? Hmm, idk it will ever get off the ground.
