Yet Another Trump Threat on Russia, Why Should Putin Take it Seriously?

At some point, threats must be backed up.

Is Putin Laughing?

The Wall Street Journal reports Trump May Send Tomahawks to Ukraine

President Trump threatened to send long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine, should Russian President Vladimir Putin continue to decline his efforts to negotiate a peace deal in the region.

“I might say, look, if this war’s not going to get settled, I’m going to send them Tomahawks,” Trump told reporters on Air Force One on Sunday as he flew overseas to Tel Aviv, where he is set to take part in a ceremony for a landmark peace deal between Israel and Hamas.

On Sunday, he seemed more amenable, saying he planned to speak with Putin. “I might have to speak to Russia, to be honest with you, about Tomahawks,” Trump said. “Do they want to have Tomahawks going in their direction? I don’t think so.”

Pathetic or Laughable?

That’s the question.

I am not saying Trump won’t do it, or even that he should.

What I am saying is no one has any reason to believe he will.

Trump “Truths” and Tweets (Emphasis in bold is mine)

  • January 26, 2023, 7:06 PM: IF I WERE PRESIDENT, THE RUSSIA/UKRAINE WAR WOULD NEVER HAVE HAPPENED, BUT EVEN NOW, IF PRESIDENT, I WOULD BE ABLE TO NEGOTIATE AN END TO THIS HORRIBLE AND RAPIDLY ESCALATING WAR WITHIN 24 HOURS. SUCH A TRAGIC WASTE OF HUMAN LIFE!!!
  • February 7, 2023, 9:39 PM: We wouldn’t have had the War with Russia and Ukraine if I were President. I could also end it in 24 hours—which is what should happen!
  • May 21, 2023, 7:37 AM: An agreement must be reached, immediately, between Russia and Ukraine. The right person can get it done in 24 hours. DO IT!
  • June 15, 2024, 6:39 PM: “I will have that settled prior to taking the White House as President-Elect.
  • February 12, 2025, 1:11 PM: I just spoke to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine. The conversation went very well. He, like President Putin, wants to make PEACE. We discussed a variety of topics having to do with the War, but mostly, the meeting that is being set up on Friday in Munich, where Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio will lead the Delegation. I am hopeful that the results of that meeting will be positive. It is time to stop this ridiculous War, where there has been massive, and totally unnecessary, DEATH and DESTRUCTION. God bless the people of Russia and Ukraine!
  • February 13, 2025, 6:52 AMGREAT TALKS WITH RUSSIA AND UKRAINE YESTERDAY. GOOD POSSIBILITY OF ENDING THAT HORRIBLE, VERY BLOODY WAR!!!
  • March 7, 2025, 9:17 AM: Based on the fact that Russia is absolutely “pounding” Ukraine on the battlefield right now, I am strongly considering large scale Banking Sanctions, Sanctions, and Tariffs on Russia until a Cease Fire and FINAL SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT ON PEACE IS REACHED. To Russia and Ukraine, get to the table right now, before it is too late. Thank you!!!
  • April 26, 2025, 9:35 AM: No matter what deal I make with respect to Russia/Ukraine, no matter how good it is, even if it’s the greatest deal ever made, The Failing New York Times will speak BADLY of it. … This is Sleepy Joe Biden’s War, not mine. It was a loser from day one, and should have never happened, and wouldn’t have happened if I were President at the time. I’m just trying to clean up the mess that was left to me by Obama and Biden, and what a mess it is. With all of that being said, there was no reason for Putin to be shooting missiles into civilian areas, cities and towns, over the last few days. It makes me think that maybe he doesn’t want to stop the war, he’s just tapping me along, and has to be dealt with differently, through “Banking” or “Secondary Sanctions?” Too many people are dying!!!
  • May 8, 2025, 4:38 PM: Talks with Russia/Ukraine continue. The U.S. calls for, ideally, a 30-day unconditional ceasefire. Hopefully, an acceptable ceasefire will be observed, and both Countries will be held accountable for respecting the sanctity of these direct negotiationsIf the ceasefire is not respected, the U.S. and its partners will impose further sanctions. Thousands of young soldiers are dying on a weekly basis, and everybody should want it to STOP. I do, and the United States of America does, also. As President, I will stay committed to securing Peace between Russia and Ukraine, together with the Europeans, and a Lasting Peace it will be! This ceasefire must ultimately build toward a Peace Agreement. It can all be done very quickly, and I will be available on a moment’s notice if my services are needed. Thank you for your attention to this matter!
  • May 11, 2025, 12:03 AMA potentially great day for Russia and Ukraine! Think of the hundreds of thousands of lives that will be saved as this never ending “bloodbath” hopefully comes to an end. It will be a whole new, and much better, WORLD. I will continue to work with both sides to make sure that it happens. The USA wants to focus, instead, on Rebuilding and Trade. A BIG week upcoming!

Incredibly Interesting Fox New Interview

Please consider the July 16, 2023 interview Trump describes how he could solve Russia-Ukraine conflict in 24 hours

Maria Bartiromo: “You said you could end the war in Ukraine in 24 hours. How would you do that?”

Trump: “I know Zelenskyy very well, and I know Putin very well, even better. And I had a good relationship, very good with both of them. I would tell Zelenskyy, no more. You got to make a deal. I would tell Putin, if you don’t make a deal, we’re going to give him a lot. We’re going to [give Ukraine] more than they ever got if we have to. I will have the deal done in one day. One day.”

Synopsis

Trump repeatedly made claims he could solve this in a day.

In 2022 praised Zelensky’s courage and called Putin’s attack on Ukraine “an outrage, and an atrocity that should never have been allowed to occur.

In the 2023 Fox interview Trump told Maria Bartiromo “I would tell Putin, if you don’t make a deal, we’re going to give him a lot. We’re going to [give Ukraine] more than they ever got if we have to.

On April 30,2024, Trump’s one-line “Truth” was “If Republicans want to help Trump, they should pass Ukraine aid now”

On March 7, 2025, Trump said “I am strongly considering large scale Banking Sanctions, Sanctions, and Tariffs on Russia until a Cease Fire and FINAL SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT ON PEACE IS REACHED.”

On April 26, 2025, Trump correctly assessed the situation. “It makes me think that maybe he doesn’t want to stop the war, he’s just tapping me along.”

Gee, ya think?

On May 8, 2025, Trump said “both Countries will be held accountable for respecting the sanctity of these direct negotiations.”

Paper Tiger, Braggard, and a Liar

There is only one possible conclusion from this. Trump is a proven paper tiger, a braggard, and a liar.

Why is the latest threat any more credible than everything that preceded it?

Trump is already bombing many russian refineries and infrastructures (through Ukraine drones, with of course strong US support). So yes, he is escalating now, and Putin knows it perfectly.

I would hate to be on the opposite side of a real estate deal with President Trump. He’s probably been a bully and a liar since he was 2 years old. I supported him, but he needs a sane nanny to whip his ass occasionally.

With gold hitting $4,100 it does not look like the world has much confidence in Trump or Putin in this matter.

What particular reason did we have for moving NATO assets to Russias border?

A little balance is due here . Putin and his minions have bluffed the west by making threats so many I could not list . Need I remind you that Putin said at the beginning
that this would be a short 10 day military operation . So after million plus casualties and 2.5 years of war that started under Biden , Obama administrations we should worry about threats that Trunp is making ? The first casualty of war is truth . Bluffing has been being dished out by Trump, Putin , all the Euro leaders and so on . So pick your angle and your story accordingly .

Russian Media that is controled by the Russian government trumpeted that they would take Ukraine within a week many times . For the record I agree with Mish that the west provoked Russia with nato membership my point is the Truth and War and all involved including Putin and Media Russian and the west have spewed all kinds of threats . Russia attempted a quick special forces take over of Kiev but Ukraines military was waiting and took them out then Russia tried to invade down highways and got slaughtered . Trust me Russia thought this would be over quickly and they were wrong and that includes Putin . Their military has performed horribly

Putin did not want to follow the west’s
Standard war fare method , lie about the need for intervention .
Then by pass congress , and smash all water / power supply
Crush supply lines of aid
And declare a big win , spend next decade fighting a insurgency whilesetting up infrastructure to rape / steal energy resources and leave the people devastated
Now that is a winning program

Carl Icahn in corporate deals was a master of spouting forth a disconcerting flurry of fragmented deal points, at the precise best moments to bend his exhausted opponents. Trump is no Carl Icahn, though he thinks he is. Trump was something of a player in those games, back then (80’s), but Trump’s outcomes lined up side by side were numerically worse than Icahn’s. (As Mish showed, things lined up side by side with Trump often go quite against his trumpetings.) One difference between Trump and the classic sucker at the poker table is, he has so many resources to squander. (This is the precise result of a vibrant USA system for 250 years that was completely unlike his.) Ten thousand bucks at the poker table will beat one buck every time, in spite of skill. (Side note: we and our fate are among the resources he is playing with: he is selling out the family furniture to head back to the casino for more iffy bets.) That resource edge (for now) can, in itself, be an overwhelming advantage, despite relative incompetence and the attention span of a gnat.

Putin’s best strategy would seem to be, keep probing.
Mish, you do a great service, lining up the quotes. It exposes this emperor’s wardrobe, his whole schtick. The lack of accountability should not loom over our lives just because of the casual, lazy and fragmented character of online posts, amidst the rest of the similar noise. Instead, journalism at large is seizing on fragments and spinning them, which does not confer credibility.

They will be used to blow up Russia’s oil and train network thereby cutting off Russia’s ability to export energy. Ukraine doesn’t really need them that much since they have developed some interesting long-range missile themselves but it does add to their arsenal. It will be a cold winter in Russia this year.

Go to YouTube and type in Mike Benz Ukraine and see what the war is all about, set up by the CIA/USAID coup in Ukraine in 2014. Trump can’t disengage without massively losing face, so you know that egotist won’t. That he claimed he could end the war in 24 hours shows how absolutely clueless he was about the situation. It’s a lose, lose situation for the Western oligarchs trying to damage the Eastern oligarchs. BTW, I support neither side. Check out the Pandora Papers which show secret off-shore accounts and that Ukraine oligarchs are twice as corrupt as Russian oligarchs, the top two countries in that report.

1) Russia is the de facto winner of this existential war, so unless NATO escalates to nuclear, which is murder/suicide, Russia will dictate terms.
2) Russia is not afraid of conventional warheadTomahawks, which would cause similar “obliteration” as occurred in Iran, which is to say a next to nothing burger.
3) As a reminder, China is Russia’s ally in a big war. That combination has technical equality, superior manpower and warfighting experience, superior manufacturing capability, and favorable geographical positioning in a big war.

Draw your own conclusions from these factors.

Tomahawk cruise missiles are launched from multiple platforms, including surface ships, submarines, and ground launchers. Specifically, they are launched vertically from vertical launch system (VLS) cells on warships, horizontally from torpedo tubes on attack submarines, and from ground launchers such as the U.S. Army’s Typhon missile launcher system.”

Typhons currently appear to be out of stock. So much for “sending Tomahawks to the Ukraine”
