Independents Sour On Biden as His Popularity Hits a New Low

PBS NewsHour/NPR/Marist poll

Biden’s popularity is plunging according to a new PBS NewsHour/NPR/Marist poll.

As President Joe Biden heads into the end of the year, he’s facing a sour reality: The number of Americans who approve of his performance has hit a new low. Just 41 percent of Americans approve of the job he has been doing as president, according to a new PBS NewsHour/NPR/Marist poll. Support among independents alone dropped eight points in a week.

Overall, more than half – 55 percent – of Americans disapprove of Biden’s performance, including 44 percent who strongly disapprove. His disapproval ratings have jumped 20 points since he took office, reaching a record high this month. The number who strongly disapprove jumped 6 points since a Marist poll conducted just one week earlier.

Perhaps the most alarming drop for the White House and Democrats heading into the midterm election year is Biden’s support among independents. Two-thirds of independent voters disapprove of Biden, including half who strongly disapprove. Both numbers are up at least 30 points since he took office. Just 29 percent of independents approve of his job performance.

“The independents were the major difference” in this poll, Miringoff said. “The one good thing [for Biden] about losing independents and not doing as well with Democrats is those are groups you can win back.”

538 – How Unpopular is Joe Biden?

The above compilation is from FiveThirtyEight

Polls Are No Surprise

The polls are no surprise in this corner and should not be in any corner.

Eight Reasons

  1. Inflation is soaring
  2. Supply chains still disrupted
  3. Vice President Kamala Harris suffers from staff resignations and infighting
  4. Biden’s vaccine mandates are constitutionally questionable
  5. Build Back Better is a massive failure of political overreach
  6. Progressives have hijacked Biden’s agenda and Elizabeth Warren appears to be making key policy decisions
  7. Immigration mess
  8. Another outbreak of Covid is underway
  9. Critical Race Theory
  10. Woke policies in general

What About 2022 Midterms?

Independents swung the election for Biden in 2020 but signal disaster for the Democrats in the 2022 midterm elections.

Polls can change of course, but even if inflation abates, that’s not the same as prices going down.

And if for any reason the stock market sinks (overvaluation correction or rate hikes by the Fed), that will add to voter misery.

Finally, Republicans have a cohesive anti-woke, anti-CRT, anti-Cancel Culture strategy. Independents have had enough and even some Democrats have finally had enough.

The only thing that makes sense in a winner-takes-all democracy like the USA… if you’re mostly anti-R or anti-D just find a soulmate in the other category, then make a pact to both vote any 3rd party. Doesn’t change anything in the dems vs reps battle, but it’s 2 anti-establishment votes extra plus 2 establishment votes less… with one action. Talk about efficiency.

Dems are putting all their eggs in the vaccine basket. They want to claim they defeated Covid with their mandates. It’s clearly not going to work now. And may even backfire if the reports of the number of deaths from the vaccine are accurate. Might be the young and healthy are at more risk taking the vaccine than getting Covid. Might be another conspiracy theory that became conspiracy fact.
Wonder what they’ll try next.

A big one for me in addition to the list above, the first amendment and the persecution of Julian Assange.
Secondly if he had any b*lls he would be slapping a pandemic profiteering tax on big pharma etc… ala Truman and WW2 profiteering.

Biden is sinking because he has kept the one big promise he made – “nothing will fundamentally change”.

I don’t understand how such a charismatic, energetic, progressive, honest and articulate president can have such low poll numbers.

What does it say about the USA when 41% still approve of a demented racist as president?

By the time we get our free Covid tests the pandemic will be over. A day late and a dollar short.

Democrat are almost certainly going to take a shellacking in the midterms.
But if Trump runs in 2024, this independent will gladly vote for Lenin’s ghost to keep that a-hole out of the White House. Trump running would be Biden’s best shot to win, in my view. Anybody.

No, I prefer ANYBODY over Trump. I’d vote for a woke gay communist with an IQ of 80. It has nothing to do with Biden, whom I deplore.

So what did you hate so much about President Trump’s rule? The lower taxes? The low unemployment, especially for people of color? The booming economy? Security at the southern border? The rapid development and successful roll-out of Covid vaccines?

Controlled immigration, making NATO members pay their fair share, standing up against the liberal media, calling out the Bidens for graft, aggressively confronting Covid… yep, Trump was awful.

Not worth electing a man with no moral fiber and designs to game the political system, no matter what kind of personal gain I might get out of it.

You last comment is confusing.  As I read what you said, I agreed–because you had precisely described Joe Biden’s entire career.  Then I followed this thread to its beginning and see you are anti-Trump.  Not a particularly eloquent speaker (although Biden’s creepy whisper even scares my cat), Trump promised to make America great again, and then he did everything the congress would allow, to do just that.  But he was not part of the corrupt DC Swamp system and even the GOP Swamp creatures felt threatened.
Minor point.  When the dem controlled congress wanted a pandemic giveaway, he put in a waiver of Required Minimum Distribution for 2020, so that retired people who had saved money, paid off their home mortgages, didn’t run up debt for new cars every three years, and generally lived modest lives (yes, I mean me) were not forced to take distributions from their IRAs and 401(k) rollover accounts and pay taxes on them.  He thought of the people who tried to take care of themselves rather than just the career welfare takers and those who would rather live off unemployment than work.  Biden and the socialists resent people who are self sufficient and did not include the RMD waiver for 2021.

No way in h*ll I will be voting for Trump. DeSantis perhaps. Trump has zero respect for rule of law and does not have any loyalty to his strongest followers who are gonna be/are languishing in Federal prison. I would like to see him up on charges for treason.

In order to be charged with treason, it’s traditional for you to have ACTUALLY COMMITTED TREASON!  Your Leftist wet dreams don’t count when it comes down to what we call “reality” (new concept for you, I know).

The moment Biden was sworn in undecided poll responders began answering “disapprove”. Then in May those in the approve category began to switch to disapprove. The botched Afghanistan pull-out in August really accelerated Biden’s crash, which I believe is now permanent.

Im a independent.   He seems somewhat in a catch 22.  Cant blame him for the pandemic if your one of the ones not taking the vax.   Or if you dont believe in the mandates.
Supply chain issues are gonna bump along and as long as covid disruptions and then some.
Inflation seems to be a product of the fed right.
I will vote for dems who cant get stuff done before i vote for treasonous republicans.
Kind of glad the infrastructure is falling through.

The only republicans i would vote for are those that stood up and called bs on the voter fraud.   The rest are seditionist / lack the balls or are to worried about jobs to stand up for the constitution.

Well trump put to republican senators on investigating hunter and such.  I figure if they had dirt we would have heard about it by now.  With that being said they are all guilty of enriching themselves.  Either by connections or policy decisions.

Nixon had many faults, but he had the balls to mine the harbors and bomb N Vietnam into negotiating and got our POW’s home when every advisor and politician was telling him not to. Why did we have so many POW’s in N Vietnam? Two answers: Johnson and McNamara. The reason I bring this up is that this is the 49th anniversary of the so-called “Christmas bombing” of 11 days in December, 1972. I flew three of those missions and 70 of my flying mates paid for that small success with their lives. Why did we leave Afghanistan in defeat? Why did we leave Vietnam in defeat? Why are we out of Iraq with little to show for it other than killed and maimed + $Trillions in debt? Same answer to all of our failed wars and failing country; useless, selfish, ignorant Generals, politicians and the people who vote for them.

Trump was also pretty creepy.

I am a Republican and very religious.

For every time Biden is seen groping and hugging women Trump has made an off color remark about women, sometimes very disturbing comments. Both Biden and Trump are signs of the leadership vaccuum that both parties are begging to be filled by a qualified candidate.  If either Trump or HIllary again attempt to run that is a sign of bad things to come.

If it was women who Biden groped that would be bad enough. Unfortunately, he gropes little girls. It pales beside Trump’s off-color remarks.  That said, Trump has problems: a narcissist with a big ego, not overly intelligent, brash…

Nailed it. Unfortunately, the media supports Biden and not Trump, so most people have no idea how evil the Democrats are–Russiagate is the example.
