The record-smashing crowds casting ballots early in battleground Georgia owe their size at least in part to people changing their minds about voting by mail after President Donald Trump and other Republicans spent months criticizing the method.
In the first eight days of voting, nearly 1.7 million Georgians voted absentee or in-person, a 142% increase from the same period in the 2016 race, state data show. Of those, more than 980,000 voted in person.
A look at the first day of voting in Georgia showed just how many ditched their mail-in ballots. On Oct. 12, about 25,000 of the 128,000 voters who swamped the state’s polling stations signed affidavits to cancel mail ballots at the same time, according to University of Florida elections expert Michael McDonald.
Republican Sec of State Pleads Don’t Switch
Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, who asked switchers to cut it out. He said the extra time needed to cancel mail ballots was aggravating long lines.
“What I would really encourage is that the 1.6 million people who requested absentee ballots actually send them in, and not show up in person,” he said at a news conference Wednesday.

People do not trust their mail-in votes will be counted.
Indeed, Trump will do everything possible to ensure they won’t.
So people are canceling their mail-in votes in such numbers that the Republican Secretary of State now pleads for ballot requests to be mailed.

I think it will be open season either way, but if he loses it will be less likely to be widespread. The right and their gun toting violent nuts still just do not get that they are at a numerical demographic disadvantage and that is WHY they have to cheat in order to win elections. It appalls me that any state would have “straight” party voting as an option. Voters should choose based on individual merit, not party affiliation. At the other extreme, in Nebraska, other than at the top of the ticket (President, Senator, Congress, Governor, etc), on other elections it is not permitted to show what party a person is in. So, when you vote for legislator, or mayor, or city council, or airport authority, or whatever, it is all non-partisan.
Eliminating the straight party ticket right now….which in Texas goes way back, btw….was a ploy to make it harder for Democrats to win……pure and simple. Not Biden, particularly….but the down-ballot candidates.
Abbott also did other things to make it harder to vote……like insisting that there should be ONE drop box for absentee ballots per county……Harris County has 4.7 MILLION people. One drop box…for “security”.

Yes, I know it goes way back. It was there when I lived there (1978-83). I’ve lived a lot of places, and it was the only place I’ve ever seen it. Just because it goes back, however, doesn’t mean it should be there.
If two thirds of the voters prefer it, you can’t really make a decent argument that it shouldn’t be there.
I could make an argument that voters should have to pass a test identifying who the candidates are, and what their platforms are.
I could make an argument that voters should have to pass a high school level civics test, to prove they have some small understanding of how our system is supposed to work.
I could make an argument that nobody with an IQ under 120 should have a vote.
And all that would no doubt lead to the better kind of outcome you envision. But none of that is ever going to happen.
There are 16 members of my extended family in Texas. Every one of them voted straight Democratic. Most of them are young and they have vowed to never vote for a Republican the rest of their lives.
