Sanctuary Cities Seek More Money for Migrants, But is Money the Problem?

Chicago, New York, and Denver all seek more money to address the surge of migrants. However, money sent to sanctuary cities will only make things worse.

10,000 Per Day

The sanctuary cities seek more money to address the migrant issue.

New York City Mayor whines the problem will cost $12 billion. Denver’s mayor said the problem will consume 10 percent of its budget.

But what about Texas? On many days in December, there were 10,000 or more illegal entries.

Mayors Call for Action

CNN reports December migrant surge at Southern border largest in more than two decades as mayors call for action.

A new surge of migrants at the US-Mexico border is overwhelming already-stretched resources and prompting urgent talks with Mexican officials as December border crossings reached a record monthly high.

Border authorities encountered more than 225,000 migrants along the US-Mexico border this month, marking the highest monthly total recorded since 2000, according to preliminary Homeland Security statistics shared with CNN. Over the course of the month, authorities dealt with more than 10,000 migrants crossing daily until more recently, when the numbers began to drop.

Since last year, Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott has bused more than 92,000 migrants to cities across the country, according to his office. Those cities include Los Angeles, Denver, Chicago, Philadelphia, New York City and Washington, DC – all of which are led by Democratic mayors.

“The international crisis that we are experiencing right now is being subsidized by local economies,” Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson told “CNN This Morning” Friday.

“That is not sustainable, and that’s why we need Congress to actually have appropriations to make sure that what refugees from Ukraine receive, we have to ask … why aren’t those same support services being provided for individuals who are coming from the continent of Africa and Central and South America?”

The shelter system for migrants in Chicago has reached capacity, the mayor said. And without a coordinated solution, the migrant crisis “is going to crush local economies,” Johnson said.

Denver is expected to spend about 10% of its entire city budget on migrant shelter and aid next year, Mayor Mike Johnston said.

New York City has received more than 161,000 migrants since 2022, and the influx will likely cost an estimated $12 billion over three years, Mayor Eric Adams said. “Every agency and delivery of service in my city is going to be drastically impacted by the actions of picking up the tab of $5 billion this fiscal year, $12 billion of three years,” Adams said.

How Can Money Possibly Help?

Is the problem lack of money or is the problem 10,000 illegal entries into the US every day?

If you want to double the problem, double the money thrown at it. We can easily have 25,000 illegal crossing a day if we just spend enough.

New York City moans about accepting 161,000 migrants since 2022. At 10,000 a day or even 3,000 a day on average, how many does Texas have?

The blue, big-city mayors don’t like Abbott bussing migrants to their cities. But do you see any of them helping out Texas?

Biden vs Trump

  1. “The reality is that Donald Trump has no plan to build a humane and secure immigration system,” Biden campaign spokesman Kevin Munoz said in a statement to CBS News. “He only cares about himself and will prey on our country’s most vulnerable if he thinks it will help him regain power.”
  2. Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung said Mr. Biden and Democrats were “directly responsible for the completely lawless and open border, allowing deadly drugs to flow into communities, giving safe passage to human traffickers, and empowering cartels to spread their violence.”

The above quotes from CBS News.

Trump says immigrant are ‘poisoning the blood of our country’ Such talk is not only inflammatory, it’s counterproductive. Independents will not be pleased with such statements. And independents will decide the election.

We should all be offended.

Trump would be better served with simple, accurate statements as in point #2 above.

Both Trump and Biden are doing everything they can to offend the independents. One of them will lose because of it.

No Plans

As for point number 1, It’s true that “Trump has no plan to build a humane and secure immigration system.”

The reality is neither does Biden. Worse yet, Biden refuses to do anything to stem the tide.

And this is happening on Biden’s watch not Trump’s.

Biden Seeks $14 Billion

On October 25, Immigration Impact reported Biden’s Emergency Funding Proposal Seeks $14 Billion for Immigration System From Congress

On October 20, the Biden administration renewed its request for emergency supplemental funding for border management from Congress. This new $14 billion request represents more than a $10 billion increase from the administration’s original August proposal and includes a sizeable investment in areas of the immigration system often forgotten by years of deterrence-heavy policy. Nevertheless, despite several positive requests, the president’s proposal still relies on increased detention and enforcement to address migration at the border.

Another notable increase is for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the enforcement arm of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The proposal includes $2.5 billion in emergency funding compared to $759 million in August. The previous proposal vaguely indicated that the money would be used to “respond to migration surges” along the border. This time around, an accompanying DHS Fact Sheet suggests that this will partially fund additional detention beds due to the administration’s increased use of expedited removal and to “offer necessary surge capacity for any periods of elevated encounters.”

Currently, the Biden administration is detaining more than 36,000 individuals. This is an all-time high for his administration and the highest amount since the beginning of the pandemic. The requested funding would reportedly increase ICE detention capacity to 46,000, potentially the highest level Congress has ever funded.

Hooray Biden wants to expand ICE detention capacity by another 12,000 persons. That would last less than two days at the December rate.

Money for Ukraine vs the US Border

Since the beginning of the war, the US has given Ukraine about $113 billion.

Biden now wants another $61.4 billion for Ukraine, but only $14 billion for the US border according to NPR.

The entire package counting Israel is $106 billion.

But this is not really about money, it’s about attitudes. Biden does not really want to do anything about the border and his priorities prove it.

Doubling or even tripling money for the border won’t do anything until there is a clear admission that the flow needs to stop. And extra money for cities will make matters worse.

The primary problem is one of attitudes. Biden does not want to address the problem.

Cut off immigration and you have a bigger labor problem then you already have. Republicans know this because this is what their business constituency tells them.

Cut off legal immigration I agree………. Cutoff illegal immigration and I disagree. I may be wrong, but by blaming republicans on this, it sounds like you may have an agenda….. If you cannot distinguish between the 2 then you are part of the problem and not the solution
Liberal Democrats are always the problem. They never come up with solutions.

The illegal crossers should also be bussed to Harvard, MIT and all other ivy league “schools”. Fits with their pro oppressed ideology and I’m sure the elite parents would love having their progenies dorming with the masses of indigent humanity.

Now, that’s a great idea. Have these Universities use their endowments to support all of these illegals. Then, let’s see how much these elite students enjoy living with the bottom end cohort.

Money is a major problem. We need to stop giving ANY/ALL money and freebie services for these migrants/illegals. No free health care, no free food, no free housing, No free schooling, etc. Have a mandatory E-Verify effective immediately. Fine is $100,000 for every person a company or person hires that doesn’t pass E-Verify. Landlords must also do E-Verify. Immediately deport anyone crossing the border illegally. Second offense is lifetime in prison. The majority of these migrants/illegals will self-deport and will drastically reduce the number of arrivals of migrants/illegals.

Definition of Sanctuary City: a city whose municipal laws tend to protect undocumented immigrants from deportation or prosecution, despite federal immigration law.

In other words, every sanctuary city is in direct violation of US Federal Immigration law, but we have spineless conservative politicians who will not cut off federal funding to these cities.

Again, outside of WAY MORE cheap labor than we need, there’s zero downside to stopping illegals at the border and turning them back. Over the next 3-5 years, these 14-16M illegals are going to cause all sorts of problems from drugs, crime, terrorism, & a buttload of money being spent unnecessarily.

And the absolute worst part of all this is that Mayorkas wasn’t impeached two years ago and FJB is fully responsible & deserves the same fate. The GOP are dicking around trying to decide when to impeach FJB over pay for play schemes but won’t hold him accountable for failing to fulfill his oath of office to protect us.

Great article, Mish! Illegal immigration is the #1 problem facing America today.

Sadly, this kind of problem typifies liberal thinking. Create a problem where none existed and let it fester. Then, instead of fixing the problem throw money at it and make it worse. These is a very easy solution, “Build that wall”.

This ““He only cares about himself and will prey on our country’s most vulnerable if he thinks it will help him regain power.”” is an appalling statement by Biden Demagogues…
It is the USA’s most vulnerable who are most impacted by the refusal of the Biden Demagogues to close the border. It is poor African-Americans in Chicago – assumed Demagogue voters, who are protesting… the swing in the Afro-American vote AWAY from the Demagogues to None of the Above or Trump or RFK is noticeable in polling.

Aside from that, it is also pure Biden Demagogue hipocrisy, with all the clearly observable grift and corruption going on in the Biden regime. The lack of criminal investigation into crimes of corruption and BLM-riot-driven murder and property damage.

It is also very telling that the Biden regime, whilst in power, whilst asking for more money, is in charge of whether the border is open or closed, yet Biden is acting like he is the opposition party and Trump is the POTUS.
The Biden Demagogues seem to be governing as if they are in opposition, passive victims to things out of their control, whilst continually asking for billions upon billions of money from debt to pay for all kinds of projects that have no direct benefit to even the “country’s most vulnerable”… so who only cares about himself? Biden… well he would if he was mentally coherant, but he is essentially a nursing home patient, and the Presidency is self-evidently split between a small team of top officials, who have no direct mandate to govern, and hence no accountability… and speaking of which… let’s include the EU in that… and the UK political establishment – whose parties are all colluding around the same policies, singing from the same WEF songsheet. Administrators like Sunak and Trudeau, and some of the clowns in Australia all surgically inserted and kept in power by corrupted pseudo-democratic processes.

Thankfully, there is pushback emerging across the western world… in NZ, in Aus, potential in Canada, France, …new signs of hope in Holland, Sweden, …lingering potential in Poland, Italy, Austria, to join beacons of sanity like Hungary and rehabilitate family-defending European nations like Russia, but huge damage is being done. We can all see with our own lying eyes in the USA and Europe, the attempt to population replace the Euro populations with immigrants from the despotic and corrupt developing world. Once the bottom falls out of the world economy, there will be a reckoning.

The flow of illegals doesn’t need to stop. It needs to reverse. Don’t allow anchor babies to get citizenship, fine employers who don’t verify the status of workers ( and that includes households that hire casual labour to do their lawns). Don’t allow illegals to register or renew car registrations or driving licenced and arrest them if they drive without licence, rego and insurance. Crush the impounded car. Deport any that are detained. Warn all that if they re-enter after being deported that they will do prison time for first offence. Second offenders do prison time and get both tattooed and branded. Any who enter after a second occurrence are to be treated as outlaws ( outlaws had no legal protection and could be killed on sight by anyone ).
Then only allow in limited number via proper screening of bona fide refugees that are culturally acceptable ( be they Armenians fleeing the Turks, moderate muslims fleeing the hardliners or Nigerian Christians fleeing the mullahs). Don’t allow in those whose attitude is Death to America or kill the infidels unless you like to see more scum tearing down pictures of kidnapped children.

Every illegal that is released, every illegal hired, every veteran and teenager not hired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not vested, those who are without assets and are not indemnified as as Citizens of The United States of America.
This world in illegals is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its citizens, the genius of its horticulturists and chefs, the hopes of its teenagers. The cost of one illegal is this: an American who is not able to tolerate living 8 to a one bedroom apartment in more than 30 cities. It is two American workers: a husband and wife, each working with their hands who cannot outbid a Financial Zionist who’s recently purchased investment; that will be leveraged and rented to those same 8 people. It is two fine, fully capable teenagers who are told they need 5 years experience in dish washing to be hired. It is some fifty people sleeping on the concrete pavement. We pay for a illegals with a half-million homeless shivering in the cold winter because they have been outbid or granted a free hotel room at the expense of a veteran. We pay for a single illegal with homes that could have been built by American hands for a decent wage. . . . This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening invasion, it is Americans hanging from a Pinata.

No discussion of a permanent impregnable wall on the southern border. No discussion of Mexico paying for migrant holding areas 10 miles inland on the Mexican side of the border. No discussion of illegals being deported back to their point of entry 10 miles inland within Mexico.

Only talk of illegal migrant shelters in the US.

The legal citizens who are poor, just became poorer. The gated community elites have what thy always wanted, to be served.

The Constitutional Contract with the citizentry has been violated and I fear and possibly welcome a 1783 event in the US.

Migrants are a win win win for the elite. They help push down labor costs. They help prop up real estate prices. They create lucrative public private partnerships in the form of run down motels that turn into migrant housing. Best of all, they create division and distraction among the “little people”.

Notice how the migrants never wind up in affluent areas? The 50 Venezuelans that were shipped to Martha’s Vineyard were shipped back to shore because “they didn’t have the resources”.

These Sanctuary Cities made out great, when they took whatever rewards were doled out to them, and of course the wink and nod, but I digress.

Now the People are coming, and in force, and they are looking for that Promised Sanctuary. They came seeking what they were promised, and that’s safety, security, jobs, healthcare, food and support.

They have not seen anything close to what they expected, and are OK for now as they patiently await it. The problem is that the Numbers Are Increasing Exponentially, and the Money Is Gone! It was all spent on the “Virtue Signaling” Programs and Staff.
All the Taxpayers Dollars have been shoveled off to Ukraine, to Help Them with Their Border, and The Issues that Their Country Is Facing. The little money left now for awhile, is earmarked for Social and Domestic Issues for Re-Election Efforts. If they can get some more money for Ukraine, which is doubtful, then they could easily siphon off a cool 100M, and they would be on there way once again…
MJ better get his crap together, because where back In Session, and he is On The Hot Seat, to get crap done, and very quickly I might add. For sure one MTG, from what I have read anyway, has made it clear to Johnson, to put away his toys, and quit playing around. Either do your job as expected and asked, or get out of the way, and we will find someone that will!! That’s what I gathered from what I saw and read anyway.

The immigrants have learned to exploit our immigration system. The tide can’t be stopped until this is addressed. This is a law and congress needs to act.

By law, illegal aliens apprehended at the border are to be promptly returned through a process called expedited removal.
However, migrants are able to circumvent this process by simply claiming they intend to seek asylum in the U.S., regardless of the merits of the claim.
Until this loophole is closed, human smugglers and traffickers will continue to exploit it, knowing that migrants will be processed out of custody and released into American communities.

America has a de facto ppen border. We are allowing anyone that travels to our border to enter and live in the United States. This probably means more ethic food choices along with either more taxes or fewer services to support the 3rd world poor entering the country. We will get some nice people along with some pretty horrible gangs. There will be more Fentanyl deaths and addictions and more homelessness. Further, this also means cartels will continue to infiltrate law enforcement through bribery (which is completely under-reported) and they will also work to elect their own judges and politicians as they do in Mexico. It should be interesting to see how the media is going to spin the coming consequences of this grossly irresponsible policy.

Too expensive to pay 5K per and of course the city would then have to pay another 5-10K for a funeral / cremation. Plus there is the issue of guns being fired at random in cities (not good) and the chance someone kills a non-immigrant (penalty for that would have to be death to the hunter to discourage false positives etc).

I could get behind your plan if it the license was only for the border itself. Say you get a license to hunt illegals only within 1/4 mile of the border. So you’d have to travel there and likely get a local outfitter to take you on an expedition looking for illegals crossing. That makes identification a lot easier (legit people cross at border crossings). Do you think people would pay say $1000 to do some ‘big game hunting’ of illegals?

The solution to wrongly killing the innocent but correctly shooting illegals is to mark (forehead brand) any illegal in prison for serious crimes and then deport them. A few will try to sneak back across the border but when they get plugged and their body strung up for the crows to peck in full view of places like Eagle Pass the deterrent factor to cross will be high. Similarly brand those caught repeatedly crossing the border and they too will be fair game if they come back after deportation.
And perhaps fence off the border strip and make it a legal kill zone for anyone to enter not in border control hi viz vests. So locals could sit on the US side of that zone and legally shoot to kill or torment anyone illegally in that zone of any age or gender.. Sounds inhumane to shoot women with babies but after a few get shot then a million others will get the message BORDER CLOSED.
Want to enter? Then go through the proper channels. Want to claim refugee status? Then you will be detained in a spartan boot camp until your claim is accepted or rejected and you will need strong reasons and evidence to be granted refugee status.

The sanctuary cities have said a thousand social justice messages about how Migrants would enrich us. What they meant is, they will enrich us as long as we keep them down in the border states and we don’t actually have to do anything. I also like that everyone is upset with the border states for sharing the wealth of immigrants … but none of these folks are upset about the Biden middle of the night flights and buses to who knows where.

Looking at how well uber-blue cities have been handling homelessness over the last few decades … the Migrant issue will with us for decades as well (even if we stemmed the tide now. A good 6 minutes to look strategically at immigration: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPjzfGChGlE
