Biden Is Dropping Out, Endorses Kamala Harris

The rumor mill was correct. President Biden has made it official. He is dropping out of the race. This is a live post, updated with comments, at the bottom, not top.

I had just finished a post on growing calls for Biden to drop out, then came the official announcement.

My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term. My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this.

Tweet Endorsement vs Official Announcement

Curiously, the official announcement did not endorse Kamala. The above Tweet did.

What’s the Tweet? An afterthought?

Big Win for the Rumor Mill

On July 18, I stuck my neck out with Biden Expected to Drop Out this Weekend, Not Endorse Kamala

I very seldom go with the rumor mill. But the pieces added up.

Even the non-endorsement part was correct, at least momentarily.

Who Wrote the Letter?

The New York Times reports Biden Drops Out of Race, Scrambling the Campaign for the White House

One person informed about the matter said the president had told his senior staff at 1:45 p.m. that he had changed his mind, an announcement that surprised many aides who had been told as recently as Saturday night that his campaign was still full speed ahead. It was not immediately clear whether he wrote the letter himself or had help, nor did his aides know when or how he might address the nation.

The president’s decision set the stage for an intense, abbreviated scramble to build a new Democratic ticket, the first time in generations that a nomination will be settled at a convention rather than through primaries. Although he did not endorse Ms. Harris, she starts the truncated process in the strongest position, but could face challenges from other Democrats.

The eventual nominee will have just over 75 days after next month’s convention to consolidate support from Democrats, establish themselves as a credible national leader and prosecute the case against the Republican former president.

So the democrats decided they don’t want a repeat of their racists 2020 where none of their delegates supported their only black candidates, Corey and Kamala.

Two takeaways: this race will be about Race; and the democrats realize they can’t win so they will pivot to sabotaging Trump’s second term.

With Kamala Harris, Democrats would bet against US history of sexism, racism

By Jeff Mason and Bianca Flowers

July 21, 2024

July 21 (Reuters) – The Democratic party will be taking a historic gamble if it now turns to Vice President Kamala Harris to become its presidential candidate, betting that a Black woman can overcome racism, sexism and her own missteps as a politician to defeat Republican Donald Trump.

So, the only reasons the vacuous nothing that is Kamala Harris would lose are intransigent US racism and sexism? Really? Nothing about her complete lack of competence? Nothing about how the Democrat Party completely rejected her 4 years ago to the extent that her own campaign staff said she was incompetent?

Be serious. Racism and sexism trump all else. Even were Harris competent (and she is not), she would still have to surmount the other stuff, which she is no capable of doing on her own either.

So all-in-all, she is a total loser.

I am being serious. If there is racism and sexism holding Kamala Harris back then it is entirely within the Democrat Party and not in the general electorate. Pointing to racism and sexism as her primary impediments give a) no credit to the reality of the United States , and b) gives Harris way too much credit for her highly probably loss.

The case against Harris:

If the Dems go with Harris, they have ZERO chance of winning.

Were you to peruse the reader comments on any related NYT Biden/Harris articles, you would notice that Harris is not well liked at all.

Clyburn forced Biden on the USA. He isn’t going to be given a 2nd chance to anoint Harris. The blacks are not going to be allowed to control this election and pick their favorite candidate.

The money argument is BS. There are plenty of Dem billionaires who could easily write a $250 million check if necessary.

Harris has a reputation as an airhead who has accomplished nothing over the past 4 years.

Not a bullish sign. It’s too late to buy; the last leg of Bull market started after debate.

Buy the rumor; sell the news, right?

Trump’s win could hurt the economy short-run with tariffs, deportations (less healthcare/food/hotel spending) and layoffs in WDC area.

Offset by tax-cuts so small businesses, blue-collar and those working for Tips will do fine (my plumber likes cash … maybe it’s been a tip for years?). We see the Rus2500 booming already.

It’ll take 2-3 months to pass his legislation after Congress goes red too. It’ll be all CR’s expiring, say March, for FY25.

MikeC711

But the market is built on futures. Not sure how much this will impact it as I think it was a foregone conclusion and may already have been built in. I also really hope that Trump doesn’t push hard and that he does not get through the tariffs. As for the deportations … just have $0 funding illegals. The states will eventually not be able to afford their SJW messaging … and many immigrants will self-deport.

notaname

Reply to  MikeC711

Agree – the Trump victory is embedded in market.

So, sell now on the hope of Trump ahead of the reality of Trump.

I’ll guess CR for Feds until March. States seem to be funding immigration bennies although, yes, that cannot continue forever.

Tariffs … hard to know … maybe will take a year to negotiate and could be minor.

Self-deport?? They’ll stay and work (or steal) below the radar (no taxes, no OSHA, etc) as has been done for decades; now at much larger scope. it’s shocking to see California self-destruct financially but that’s their path. Take a look at Germany’s welfare state — over 50% going to migrants … some didn’t show up for work so their bennies are cut 50% (wah, wah). We need to see a state default on bonds (maybe Illinois first).

Germany also has the worst retirement system in Western Europe (oldest age and lowest benefits). I think bad things are on the horizon for Germany. I believe the “drill baby drill” mantra of Trump (if he can make it happen) and the likely restart of the Keystone Pipeline (if he can get past the law suits) could have a big positive impact out of the gate. Right now, for those of us who try to keep a “Plan B” in mind … there are not many countries that are doing exceeding well strategically. I’ve got my eyes on Javier in Argentina … but he has his work cut out for him.

The oil companies will need big incentives to drill more than at present. Their production is already at all-time record highs. No need to produce more.

Their focus in the last decade has been on sustainable production, fewer wells drilled, improved productivity and improved returns to shareholders. Not on drilling so much they overproduce and destroy their profitability.

MikeC711
MikeC711

I would imagine that freeing up some of the land taken out of drilling could help, and not sure the status of the fracking scenario … but we did have costs at half what they are now (1/3 what they were at their Biden peek) … I would imagine that additional inventory could bring costs down under $3 anyway (not looking for under $2 as Bidenflation has turned $2 into almost $3 anyway).

PapaDave
PapaDave

Reply to  MikeC711

Freeing up land does not mean it will be drilled. And drilling does not mean production. A lot of companies build inventories of DUCs (drilled but uncompleted wells) when it is cheap to drill. They only complete them and begin producing once it is advantageous to do so. This can increase their long-term reserves.

If his child gets a chronic cough, they take him to the Minute Clinic, quick checkup, prescribe a generic antibiotic … out the door for maybe $120 after prescrip. When someone who doesn’t pay gets that, they call 911 and ambulance takes them to ER ($600 to $1000) … ER does every test known to man + the $2500 for coming thru the door ($5000+) and then taxi voucher home. Total cost about $6500. Why, because there is no incentive to do otherwise.

People (well, the MSM anyway) keep saying that Biden didn’t have a serious primary challenger. That was only the case after RFK Jr got wise and went independent. Bet he’s pissed now that Sleepy Joe is dropping out, he might have beaten Joe in a fair primary. Then again, since when did the Democrats allow a fair primary (WTF are superdelegates, and note how Bernie got the shaft not once but twice).

Exactly, there’s no way RFK Jr would have gotten anywhere near the convention floor. Both parties have gotten so used to scripted & choreographed conventions that nobody can believe the natural and traditional open convention is actually happening. I understand 1968 was so chaotic that they never wanted to risk so a mess again. But people surely got tired of the robotic conventions, adding to the malaise of politics these days.

As for Bernie, don’t believe for one second he was shafted. His FOLLOWERS were shafted, which is why I saw more than one Bernie Bro turn MAGA in 2016. Bernie was a Sheepdog — his job was to herd wayward leftists back toward the party. Notice how he kept changing his affiliation: I to D, campaign, D back to I, wash rinse repeat. What a fraud!

Why did his own campaign set him up for that debate?

His handlers thought the debate would halt his downward slide. It only accelerated his demise.

I’m surprised the Trump team agreed to it. They should have waited until Biden was nominated and then had the debate when it would be too late for the Democrats to recover.

I know, but you’d think somebody in the Trump campaign would have made the political calculus to wait. Then again, Trump picked Vance, so there’s no telling how stupid he might make the rest of the campaign.

Team Biden was betting that Trump wouldn’t show-up, just as he refused to debate any of the Republican challengers. Then they could claim the win, call Trump a wimp, etc. They rolled the dice and they came up snake eyes.

The roles are reversed. 90% for the Big Guy and 10% for the smartest guy the big guy knows.
