The Huffington Post has details on a Good Friday Service Just for Protestants
The Pentagon has invited more than 3,500 employees to attend a Good Friday service at its in-house chapel. Except it’s only for Protestants, not Catholics.
“Just a friendly reminder: There will be a Protestant Service (No Catholic Mass) for Good Friday today at the Pentagon Chapel,” reads a Friday email sent by Air Force leadership, a copy of which was shared by an employee.
“I guess so the Catholics know their kind ain’t welcome,” said this employee, who requested anonymity to speak about internal communications. “It’s so ridiculous.”
A Pentagon spokesperson confirmed it is not hosting another, separate religious service for Catholic employees.
“The Protestant service is the only service scheduled in the Pentagon chapel today,” they said in a statement.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, a far-right evangelical Christian, has tried to infuse his religious views into Pentagon activities.
Last May, he brought his Tennessee pastor and controversial spiritual advisor Brooks Potteiger to the Pentagon to lead a prayer service, during which he hailed President Donald Trump as a divinely appointed leader. Hegseth said at the time he wanted to make his prayer service a monthly tradition.

Obviously it’s very disappointing if a man in such an important position as the Secretary of Defense (or War) takes the old religions so seriously. However, people who profess to believe those religions often seem to be able to live with the cognitive dissonance involved, and function in the real world.
Some of the comments have revealed that you Mish are not quite an expert on Catholic practices. I come from a Lutheran background, try not to be in any way superstitious, and had a lot to do with Catholics in my university years. Here in Australia there was an important Catholic-led anti-Communist movement from the 1950s to about 1980, which helped a lot to counter Communist control of trade unions and keep the Australian Labor Party (which vacillated between reformism and Communism) out of power. I found that being in a Catholic church was not much different from being in a Lutheran church, and that Catholic congregations, just like Lutheran congregations, include silly people who actually believe the nonsense and hypocritical people who don’t.
I think that we should try to make allowances for people who, for whatever reason, choose to profess to believe things that obviously aren’t true. In the case of men (as against women), I would choose to suppose that they are conforming to promises they made to their mothers or undertakings they made to their wives. Actually believing in that stuff would mean that they could not distinguish the category of fantasy from the category of reality, which is a pretty serious fault in a man (not in a woman).
The commotion about Brooks Potteiger calling for the crucifixion of Talarico is completely manufactured, not that I want to defend Potteiger.
In Christianity it is common to say that we die with Christ, and are raised up with him (through repentance and baptism), that our old self dies, and a new self “in Christ” is born. Likewise, all believers confess to being crucified with Christ, meaning our old selves die with him. The “in Christ” is a somewhat mystical phrase by which believers participate in the life, death, and ressurection of Christ.
Calling for Talarico to be crucified “in Christ” means calling for him to repent and be saved. Although highly political, polemical, partisan, provacative, and distasteful discourse, it requires willful ignorance to construe this as a call to literally crucifying the guy.

OK. So why won’t California open up records for Federal review, if everything is on the up-and-up? The State of California issues AB 60 drivers license for undocumented immigrants. They do NOT allow you to be eligible to vote. For legal residents, they issue a regular license that passes federal Real ID requirements. A part of that process ensures you are a legal resident of the USA per federal law.

Just a minor thing….Catholics don’t celebrate Mass on Friday & Saturday before Easter.
However, they’re free to attend other services, such as the Protestant one that was offered.
There is no Catholic Mass on Good Friday, but there are Catholic services. It’s one of the most somber days of the year for them, and Catholics are highly encouraged to go to service.
For the Pentagon not to have Catholic services today is incredibly offensive to devout Catholic service members in the military.

There’s no consecration of the Eucharist on Good Friday. Extra hosts are consecrated on Maundy Thursday and distributed on Good Friday. There are several services in the morning, afternoon and evening. It’s actually the busiest day of the year in a Catholic parish. And, no, Catholics are not encouraged to attend Protestant services at any time of the year. Why would they?

In the Roman Rite (used by the vast majority of Catholics), no Mass is celebrated anywhere in the world on Good Friday.
It is the only day of the liturgical year when the Eucharistic sacrifice is not offered. Instead, Catholics observe the Liturgy of the Lord’s Passion (readings, veneration of the Cross, and Communion from hosts consecrated the day before on Holy Thursday).
This is a universal Church practice, not a Pentagon-specific decision.
Otherwise it is reported the Pentagon holds daily Catholic Mass and has for Decades.

While I appreciate your clarification, why was it necessary to indicate it was a protestant service. As the military should offer services all religious groups – why not just offer a Good Friday service. Who ever wishes to attend may. Since Catholics do not celebrate Mass on Good Friday they will understand that Mass is not being held. Seems we want to bring people together – not apart.
In the military, we would identify the religious rites that would be observed during the service.
Everyone is free to attend, it’s not like IDs or “dog tags” are checked at the door.
This seems like kind of a nothingburger, honestly. I wasn’t in a combat zone other than the Korean DMZ, but I believe that the chaplains would do everything they could to accommodate individual soldiers’ beliefs.

A devout Catholic would not want to go to a Protestant Good Friday service. For example, I have family members who go to Catholic services today and would not want to go to a Protestant service if that were the only service offered. It’s just not the same for them.
You are correct that there is no Catholic Mass on Good Friday, but the Catholic service on Good Friday is a very important service in the rite. A devout Catholic could attend the Protestant service, but that would not be their first choice unless they had no alternative.
In the military, most chaplains will try to accommodate different faiths and not force a one size fits all service for one denomination over another. Instead, there is effort made to have multiple services to support multiple faiths and denominations. For the Pentagon to make an explicit point that they are only having services for Protestants and not Catholics is very untraditional.

In Protestant churches too, there is often a markedly different service/liturgy, e.g., no farewell benediction/blessing at the end but quiet retreat from the church. It is frowned upon to “celebrate” on this day.
