A U.S. official has confirmed that an American F-15E was shot down over Iran and that a rescue was underway. The plane has two crew members, and the condition of the airmen wasn’t immediately known. It was the first time that Iran had shot down a piloted aircraft during the current war.
The F-15 was originally an air-to-air fighter. The F-15E is a multi-role fighter with air-to-ground capability. The crew member in the back seat is a weapons-system officer.
One of the two crew members from the U.S. fighter jet that was shot down over Iran has been rescued, two U.S. officials have confirmed. The status of the second crew member is unknown as a search and rescue continues.
Iranian state broadcaster IRIB said earlier that an American warplane was targeted by Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps air defenses. An Iranian news agency with close ties to the country’s security services circulated photographs purporting to show wreckage of a downed jet.
Iranian state television said Iranians would be rewarded for finding any American crewmembers and turning them over alive.
There are unconfirmed reports that a rescue helicopter has also been shot down.
