A Terrible Start for the Dysfunctional GOP, Who Will Be House Speaker?

The House has elected a Speaker 127 times since 1789. Only 14 times did it take more than one ballot according to US House of Representatives History

Understanding the Math

The GOP holds 222 seats. The Democrats have 212. One seat is vacant. 218 is a simple majority. A mere 5 GOP defections are enough to derail the process given the math.

It’s a bit more complicated because it only takes a majority of the votes, not an outright majority of Congress but right now, Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy

213 votes would be enough if the rest abstain. That means the GOP can handle 9 abstentions if all the rest vote for McCarthy.

Ballots So Far

On the third ballot, 20 House Republicans Voted Against McCarthy

That’s an increase of 1 from the first two ballots. Rep. Byron Donalds of Florida, voted for McCarthy in the first two rounds, then shifted his support to Jim Jordan.

All 20 defectors voted for Jim Jordan.

However, Jim Jordan endorsed McCarthy and does not want to become Speaker. Jordan wants to head the House Judiciary Committee.

Amusingly, Democratic Rep. Hakeem Jeffries had 212 votes. Mr. McCarthy had 202 on the third ballot.

Democrats have to be laughing their heads off over this Republican fiasco.

What’s the Beef?

To the 20 rebels, McCarthy isn’t conservative enough. McCarthy did have a rift with Trump but that’s now healed. Or is it?

The New York Post reports Trump refuses to say if he still backs Kevin McCarthy for House Speaker

The Atlantic says Kevin McCarthy’s Loyalty to Trump Got Him Nothing

McCarthy broke from Trump only once, briefly, after the January 6 insurrection, when he privately called Trump’s behavior unacceptable and told members he’d ask the president to resign. (He had reason to be angry at Trump, who had flippantly dismissed his pleas for help that day, saying, “Well, Kevin, I guess these people are more upset about the election than you are.”) But he quickly moved to mend the breach, flying to Mar-a-Lago in late January 2021 to prostrate himself. He also tried to deny his private remarks until reporters produced tapes.

For What?

All day I was asking myself what good can any of this bickering do.

The Wall Street Journal asked the same question: “A rump faction blocks McCarthy’s Speaker bid, and for what?”

Please consider The GOP’s Chaos Caucus Returns

One puzzling document was a list of demands for Mr. McCarthy posted by Rep. Scott Perry, who leads the Freedom Caucus. He wants guaranteed votes on a balanced budget and “term limits for Members of Congress,” plus a pledge that “all amendments to cut spending would be allowed floor consideration,” plus a promise that Mr. McCarthy would stay neutral in open GOP primaries. Rep. Ralph Norman hinted Mr. McCarthy could earn his vote for Speaker with a plan to balance the budget in seven years.

Mr. McCarthy made many concessions to his critics, including a rule that would let a mere five dissatisfied Members force a vote on deposing him as Speaker. This unfortunate concession is one reason to wonder about him as Speaker because it will weaken his ability to enforce consensus and discipline on the hard votes to come—such as raising the federal debt limit.

But the GOP chaos caucus didn’t want to take yes for an answer. A few Republicans revel in making messes, including Rep. Matt Gaetz. According to Mr. McCarthy, Mr. Gaetz declared that he didn’t care if Mr. Jeffries ended up elected as a Democratic Speaker of a Republican House. This kind of peacock politics doesn’t serve Mr. Gaetz’s Florida constituents.

Refusing to Take Yes For An Answer

Despite the fact that McCarthy gave in to the rebel’s demands and their hero does not even want the job, they will not back McCarthy.

Matt Gaetz would rather have a Democrat as Speaker than McCarthy, and I am sure the Democrats would be willing to oblige.

Questions For GOP Rebels

Hello GOP rebels, do you understand how the system even works?

Democrats hold the Senate. Democrats hold the White House.

What the hell is the point of insisting on a balanced budget bill and “term limits for members of Congress when it’s doubtful those would pass even if Republicans held the Senate.

Of course, Biden would veto the bills, so why bother? Is symbolism all you’ve got?

Why if you wanted these things didn’t you pass legislation in the first two years of the Trump Administration when you held the Senate, House, and the White House?

And why, if you wanted a balance budget did you pass the Trump tax cuts and keep voting for insane levels of military spending?

The fact is, you are all a bunch of damn hypocrites who only want balanced budgets when the Democrats hold the White House.

Vote For Mish

I have the solution. Vote for Mish as Speaker of the House. My pledge is to pass nothing at all other than mandatory budget items and for no more than necessary.

Nothing would be a spectacular achievement compared to what we are suffering through.

It’s not like the delay matters
The last Congress already set the budget for 9 months into the year — the House doesn’t have its “power of the purse” until October 2023
And if the House passes a bill, it’s not becoming law (Senate won’t pass and Biden won’t sign) unless it’s one of those really bad “bipartisan” bills that doubly (thus the “bi” prefix) screw everybody
They have 9 months to hash this out without any repercussions. It may be that the best thing for the USA is for the House to do nothing but squabble over this until October.

What’s the big problem if it takes a few rounds, or even a few dozen rounds, of voting? This is how it is supposed to work.
Would you rather have the Soviet-style operation of the Pelosi gang where she stares for 2 seconds at the so-called progressive (Fraud) Squad, who instantly soil their pants and agree to vote for her, and it is all done in an hour’s time?

Looks like you would rather prefer the silence of a graveyard to the hustle and bustle of a lively bazaar.

It’s conventional wisdom that it’s a “terrible start.” Conversely, when it comes to intraparty battles, I tend to like the Jeffersonian view that “a little rebellion once in a while is a good thing.”

If you thought we had a dysfunctional House and Senate, wait until you see what’s in store. Eventually I think the Republicans are going to cause a debt default and overthrow of the government which is what they wanted all along. Trump could be elected speaker of the House soon. Prepare for anarchy which makes January 6th look like child’s play.

This is not entirely correct. “Holding” the Senate would require 60 seats, so as to be able to bypass the filibuster. Democrats filibustered every serious bill that Republicans wanted to actually pass, and there isn’t anything you can do about that, other than eliminate the filibuster.
And if we do that the Senate is no longer the Senate, which both parties have wisely avoided.

Looks like the far right is trying to grab as much power as they can. To me it seems it would be in the rep and dems best interest if some of the dems voted for McCarthy or the republicans find some moderate the dems could support. Minimizes the problems these holdouts can cause down the rd. Plus help purge trump from the system. I would say the same if dems were trying to appease the far left.

Wouldn’t be a bad idea for the dems to vote for McCarthy. They could get a far worse speaker. But, in their minds, this is bad PR for the republicans. Even though in reality, no one will remember this in a few weeks and few care.

Mish, I would support you for Congress with your one-line resolution. The Speaker’s job is more of a deal maker and has been used to allow/force delegation of way too much power to whomever/whatever is controlling the Speaker.
Quite frankly, I cannot see anything much worse for Republicans or the nation than making McCarthy Speaker of the House. I detest the way business as usual is considered good. 13 of 14 cases were before the Civil War? Is the WSJ implying that things have been handled better in “our” Congress since the Civil War? As Chip Roy pointed out, the process being implemented must change. As this Roy would say, Everyone voting strictly along party lines means we do not have representative government.
What is happening now is exactly what should happen. Dissent on the way business has been conducted. Will it work out for the best?

I am glad that you pointed out there really isn’t much difference between Republicans and Democrats when it comes to balanced budgets except for posturing.
And most of the economic problems that the country faces are “features” of our economic system and not the result of economic policy by Republicans or Democrats. The two biggest that I can think of is the dollar as the reserve currency which has served to export manufacturing and other jobs due to the overly strong dollar and the propagation of low interest rates which has served to promote financial wheeling and dealing instead of promote productive investment which results in real jobs plus contributes to high housing prices

Correct. Changing the monetary paradigm by integrating Monetary Gifting into the Debt Only based system. This resolves inflation by implementing price and asset deflation while doubling the individual’s purchasing power and potentially doubling the demand for every enterprise’s goods and services. In other words, it beneficially integrates the self-interests of the opposing economic and political constituencies of the republican and democratic parties.

Have any of you considered that the real power in the USA and elsewhere (finance) WANTS you to imagine that either the republicans or the democrats are the demons? …when both are simply the puppets that Finance uses to foment political gridlock and prevent conscious awareness of an actual solution, namely a new monetary and financial paradigm that resolves the deepest problems in profit-making economic systems???

Undoubtedly because at least some republicans (not the freedom or chaos caucus) understand that guys like Steve Keen have mathematically proven that without fiscal deficits the economy will inevitably slide into recession. Hence their political calculus is let’s pretend we want a balanced budget to pander to our idiocracy while not doing the economically sane thing. After all, all we actually care about is gaining and holding political power…by doing the bidding of Finance which is that the necessity for a new monetary paradigm NEVER BECOME A CONSCIOUS THOUGHT IN THE MINDS OF THE POLIS.

And the country implodes if it doesn’t get fresh new batches of wage slaves called immigrants from poor countries. This is why no wall was built and no border controls or immigration reform will ever be put in place. Dems need fresh new voters and Repubs need fresh cheap labor.
the JOLTS report out today, 10.5 million job openings and 10,000 boomers retire each day making that number worse over time. Meanwhile, smart, well capitalized people are heading for greener pastures.

All of the things you list are true, but even if there was some way to resolve those issues without a paradigm change (in other words there isn’t any way to do so) their beneficial effects would be minimal and likely fleeting. Genuine paradigm changes are PERMANENT. That is historically confirmable. Everything adapts to a new paradigm, NOT the other way around. Republicans, democrats, libertarians and even the Stupid caucus want big change. It’s just that they have not figured out how to actually accomplish it in a way that integrates the best of the agendas of the opposing right/left duality. The new monetary paradigm and its major policies does so in spades.
I like Mish. He’s very, very astute regarding the operations of the current economy within the present paradigm of Debt Only. Way back in 2007 I realized that his prediction that we were headed for a big housing deflation and so I was able to sell our Mexican condo at the top of the market. So we can often heed his advice…but his advice as well as anyone else’s that doesn’t confront the necessity of a new monetary paradigm…will never permanently resolve the major problems of modern profit-making economies. You have to find a way to temporally implement the new paradigm concept in such a way that it serves its historically verifiable integrative of opposites phenomenon. In the interests of the economy, the nation and every individual and commercial economic agent in it I would love to have an honest, informed and non-insulting discussion here with Mish on the policies of the new paradigm.

Mish wants to “fix” things back to the status quo.
Like so many baby boomers, he has zero intention of ever paying back the trillions of “debt” they took out. The last thing they want is to have younger generations realize the bloated welfare system won’t be around for them later. Keep living beyond their means, leave debt for the next group to try to pay.
The USA economy grew much much faster when the government was much much smaller.
McCarthy and McConnell and Schumer and Biden and… most of Washington DC is a system based on robbing the future to pay for the present. If the status quo falls apart, they have to live within their means!!! Gasp!!!

I say you bring it up show people you are willing to take on the tough issues with some kind of solution and let others say why it is not good (vote it down). We will deal with then in the next election. And since when is it how we look that matters?
This is exactly what we need to shutter everyone into seeing how messed up it all is!

A few principled holdouts paralyzing the system is refreshing; it draws attention to what voters want and has hit the pause button on all the damage Washington DC is doing to the nation. I’m not a supporter of the Swamp’s endless border and proxy wars on the other side of the planet while they studiously ignore our own border security and survival here at home every day.

Hey Mish,
So there has been 14 other times there was “DYSFUNCTIONAL”, in electing “SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE”???
You are starting to let your political inner self get out!!!
McCarthy is going to end up being a RINO in the long term!!
He has already caved to DEMOCAT’s too many times!!!

The speaker is supposed to be elected to represent all the people (in addition to that Representative’s own district).
its terrible that the Speaker position has almost always been decided ahead of time behind closed doors.
No one wants a Mitch McConnell Jr / Mini-Mitch (aka McCarthy) to be speaker. If anything, McConnell’s DC establishment behavior is what cost the Republicans the Senate.
Pelosi is the perfect witch to be opposition speaker — to act as a saboteur if the other party is in the White House. She was awful when her party controlled the White House. But she had been in office for decades, so tradition held that she got the chair.
McCarthy is an establishment man — institutionalized, pasturized, homogenized, and too willing to accept the status quo without question. He cannot (is not able to) serve as the spoiler to the Ice Cream idiot in the oval office. Nor does McCarthy have the charisma or brains to go his own path.
Just because the idiot who has been there the longest is **USUALLY** appointed speaker doesn’t mean its a good idea. After a lack-luster performance last November, its time to shake things up. McCarthy is not able.
Mish seems to favor the status quo — and of course he had to include a Trump insult in his post, even though he swears he doesn’t have Trump Derangement Syndrome. LAME

Ultimately it doesn’t matter why they are gridlocked. maybe the Ds and Rs are flinging poop at each other, maybe they are trapped in a procedural cluster fug. Either way, gridlocked is good

Exactly. Paralysis will at least slow down the swamp’s corruption for a few days.

Strange obtuse view when he is only short 20 votes out of hundreds to become speaker.
