Betting Odds of Cuomo Winning the NYC Primary Plunge to 13 Percent

I am somewhat of an election junkie. Here’s a NYC update.

Voting is over and the counting is underway.

Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old socialist pledging rent freezes, has jumped into the lead over Cuomo in Tuesday’s primary. Image Polymarket

Just six days ago, one could have bought Mamdani for under 10 cents. You would have had to pay 80 cents for Cuomo.

Tonight Cuomo is trading for 13 cents, under Eric Adams who is not even in the primary.

What an epic collapse!

The New York City Choice

  • Andrew Cuomo, a former Governor who resigned over a barrage of sexual harassment allegations.
  • Zohran Mamdan, a socialist rent freeze nutcase.
  • Eric Adams, the disgraced current mayor accused of accepting bribes and illegal campaign contributions.
  • Six others including Andrew Yang and Rudy Giuliani

New York Times Live Updates

In Live Updates, the New York Times reports Mamdani Holds Lead Over Cuomo in Democratic Primary for N.Y.C. Mayor

That’s a free link so you can follow along for fun and make snarky comments if you want.

Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani was holding onto a lead in the Democratic primary for mayor of New York City with more than 80 percent of the vote counted. Hundreds of thousands of votes cast on Election Day had yet to be tallied.

Mr. Mamdani, an upstart assemblyman and democratic socialist, built an early lead over Andrew M. Cuomo, the state’s scandal-plagued former governor, and held onto it as counting continued. Under the city’s ranked-choice voting system, a winner may not be clear until next week.

A Socialist Rent Freeze Advocate Catches Cuomo New York City Election Polls

Earlier today I commented A Socialist Rent Freeze Advocate Catches Cuomo New York City Election Polls

The siren songs of rent control ring loud and clear.

Who is Mish For?

None of them of course.

Q: Good Lord, could the slate be any worse?
A: I suppose it would be possible if current and former Chicago mayors were somehow eligible.

However, there is a legitimate reason to root for Mamdani.

Hear me out.

Despite being on the ballot and in third place, Adams, the city’s current mayor, is skipping the primary to run as an independent. Cuomo has also qualified for the November ballot as an independent.

If Mamdani wins, he could split the vote with Cuomo and Adams.

But it’s not that easy given Republican’s propensity to nominate sacrificial lambs.

Because of ranked voting we may not know the official winner for a week or more.

Biden for Rent Control

I played that several times and this is what I come up with “I am about to announce you can’t raise it more than 55 dollars.”

Massive applause.

Trump is not as different from this as fans might think. He is not a free trader but rather an interventionist, often an arbitrary one. His upholding of property rights is decidedly skewed to his patsies and cronies. I’m not saying Dems and particularly socialists don’t have that problem. I’m saying he does too, emphatically. So these times, IMO, are more a general populist leaning toward interventionists, left or right, new statists, of various kinds.

Who are these supporters of Mario’s child? Given his track record and age, Andrew should just settle into a pre-retirement podcast with his brother like so many others have done.

If I believe some analysts those who who voted for Mamdani were mostly prosperous professionals who didn’t have rent-controlled apartments while the working class who already had them voted for Cuomo. I guess they are tired of paying through the nose for goodies others have but they don’t.

heartburn from TACO Tuesday

…”The intelligence was very inconclusive. The intelligence says, ‘We don’t know, it could have been very severe’ — that’s what the intelligence says,” Trump told reporters as he attended meetings at a NATO summit.
“The original word that I used — I guess it got us in trouble, because it’s a strong word — it was ‘obliteration.’ And you’ll see that — and it’s going to come out. Israel is doing a report on it, I understand. And I was told that they said it was total obliteration,” Trump said.
A U.S. official who was not authorized to speak publicly on Tuesday said early intelligence assessments by the Defense Intelligence Agency showed the Saturday night strikes did not “obliterate” Iran’s nuclear enrichment program but instead set it back “a few months.”…

An assessment takes weeks at the very least but a “U.S. official who was not authorized to speak publicly” told a reporter a day later?

Even very anti-Trump Europeans eye-rolled at that.

Have you seen the before/after satellite photos? They were available the day after.

And it is obvious that the Iranians cleared it all out, satellite photos of the line of vehicles at the facility

Is an exploded bomb success?

By the way, do you think the US would plan to drop a bunker-buster on 400kg of highly enriched uranium? Would that constitute a success?

Oh! The reporter saw only two little holes and that two little holes indicate little damage. As I said a damage assessment takes weeks with lots of measurements and so forth. Can’t do it in a day.

My favorite silly quote: Karoline Leavitt: “Everyone knows what happens when you drop 12 30,000-pound bombs perfectly on their targets: Total obliteration.” Maybe everyone in Leavitt Land knows that? Then why even have or discuss an assessment? Oh yeah, experts don’t know anything is this admin’s theme.

Collins: “Earlier you said U.S. intelligence was inconclusive. Are you relying on Israeli intelligence?”

Trump: “They said it could be limited or it could be very severe. They really didn’t know.”

Did you see the report? No. It suddenly was reported in three newspapers that do no like Trump at the same time. The actual report if it had ever existed has not been released. The “source” is not mentioned except claimed to be a “DOD official” who is not named. Israel said there was good damage but doesn’t know how much which is all you can say at this time. Also I might add Israel has an interest in seeing the US make further strikes so they are no disinterested. Since they do not have these bombs and have not been partnered in their development and data it is unlikely they would know what to look for to judge correctly. But feel free to believe what you want and don’t let facts get into your way.

– Zohran Mamdani, pledging rent freezes, has jumped into the lead over Cuomo. > This is NY, and in NY you give the people what they want, and you get elected. They love all freebies, and any and all free gifts too. They love to be free of all expensive and that includes food (Free if possible, and always at school), Rent (Controlled if possible, and illegals don’t pay), Learning English in school (Free for them, but make the taxpayers pay), and if it is not Free then we will complain, fight, set fires, throw stuff, destroy stuff, and continue until everything is gone,, and gets replaced with more Free Stuff!!

– Just six days ago, one could have bought Mamdani for under 10 cents. You would have had to pay 80 cents for Cuomo. > And David Hogg was Vice Chair some 15 days ago too, but then got ousted by that same Democrat Machine. Sort of what happened to Kamala… The Party is in absolute collapse!!!

– Eric Adams, who is not even in the primary, is Also Beating Cuomo! The darling of NY, at one time not long ago, is being beaten by People NOT EVEN ON THE BALLOT! Let that sink in…

That’s how far the Democrat Party has fallen! Are they even over 20% at this point, as a Party holding office?
What an epic collapse! Is the understatement of the Year!!!

The Democratic Socialists are gonna be a force to reckon with. They don’t take corporate money and in voter districts that are well over 70% renters they are hard to beat. If we fix the housing shortage in the populous areas they’d probably disappear.

Be careful what you wish for… If they All move to NYC, then the City will collapse, and guess who picks up the tab for that? You and I that’s who! The Taxpayers would have to repair the damage, build more schools, hire more diverse speaking teachers, give away more free stuff, to more people with their hands out.
This would cause yet another mass exodus in NYC, and we know what happened last time… the City is collapsing already, and this is a sure fire way to get that moving much faster, and it will be much more expensive, for the Taxpayers and Workers left in the City. More contributors will leave, as more people with there hands out show up in record numbers.

This will work out just great, NOT!!!

I understand there is a big exodus of the rich from the UK. Nowadays, raise taxes enough, they leave. Rent control is effectively raising a tax (wealth transfer) on property owners.

Think Obamacare, but with food. So grocery stores will be opened up to certain people, which depends on the food supply they carry.
Nice expensive grocery stores will have Meat, Fish, Chips, and Dip etc. These will be for the Workers (No Free Food), or much like Obamacare, where the ones who work and can afford it, get more expensive, and better treatment, but loaded up with everything you could possibly want. Lesser or Free Grocery Stores will be for the non-workers.
When things run out in the Free Stores, you wait until next week, so get up early, even though you don’t have to, and get what you need, while it’s still available!

See how this all could potentially work…

Yes, print free tickets to things and give them out, as was done in the USSR (“we pretend to work and they pretend to pay us,” as the joke went), and once the tickets exceed the demand, you get long lines. There is no denying the logic. And it all ended up so well. The life expectancy went back to 1900 levels.

Just take a look at Cuba for how it’s going to work.

Government stores take Cuban money (worthless) and are next to empty.
Private stores take US dollars and have plenty of items.

The poor in Cuba can only shop at government stores.

Left-wing policy speakers Yanis Varoufakis and Robert Reich have endorsed candidate Zohran Mamdani. Considering who NYC voters are and the society and economy they live in I would not, will not, be surprised if they out-de Blasio themselves and elect Mamdani. And they deserve every policy that he attempts to implement. If he succeeds like Reich and Sen. Sanders tell us he will, a salute to an all-too rare success for progressivism. If he compounds the already existing mess, NYC voters voted for it and deserve such equity and socialism.

PS. I have read that NYC landlords fight to retain their property. I can’t imagine why. Let the tenants make of it what they can.

Y’all dont seem to get it. Long term planning is over with. We arent gonna pick FDR anymore because of long-term economic national planning. We vote now based on desperation. Food/clothing/shelter and debt repayment (or lose a finger). And while Mish and his academic libertarianism and the Repubs and their “pull yourself up by your own bootstraps” sounds great, desperate people vote for desperate things … like easy money, government handouts, misc. theft, mass gambling … and rent control. You suck all the wealth out of the middle and lower middle classes and this is the result … Trump and a bunch of quick flim flam. Amazing we lasted this long.

I’m very afraid Trump’s excesses will result in a backlash in the other direction. Then we can all share the poverty.

Now, if the Supreme Court would only rule that rent control is a “taking” of private property without just compensation and is, therefore, unconstitutional, we’d be in good shape. And wouldn’t the fascists of the left be surprised to find real rents collapsing, as they did in Argentina after Milei abolished all rent controls. As I recall, the number of rental units that “suddenly” became available doubled or tripled.
