Florida Governor Finally Restricts Movement To Essential Services

The Wall Street Journal reports Florida Governor, Under Pressure, to Limit Movement.

*Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Under Pressure, Issues Statewide Order Limiting Movement to Essential Services

*Governor Had Left Stay-at-Home Orders to Local Officials

One Hell of an Experiment

Florida is one hell of an experiment.

Governor Ron DeSantis left decisions to local governments.

Many beaches were open and it was business as usual except the state had an eye out for New York license plates.

The governor’s decision comes a day after Trump Warns Big Death Toll Is Coming

The White House projects 100,000 to 240,000 deaths and Doctors Deborah Birx and Anthony Fauci pleaded for social distancing.

No magic bullet. No magic vaccine or therapy. It’s just behavior,” says Dr. Birx.

This is tough. People are dying. It’s inconvenient from a societal standpoint, from an economic standpoint. But this is going to be the answer to our problems. So let’s all pull together and make sure as we look forward to the next 30 days , that we do it with all the intensity and force that we can,” said Dr. Fauci.

DeSantis somehow knew better.

I think is one of the better breakdowns. Here in VA, we’re experiencing it to the max – but it’s been good so far. https://www.novastarprep.com

I am now two days drive from Pensacola just west of San Antonio. I am being told that travellers arriving from Louisiana are either being turned away or automatically being quarantined for two weeks. This is just crazy, states have NO AUTHORITY to interdict interstate commerce/travel, in fact that power is specifically reserved to the federal government in the constitution. Where are these people (like me) supposed to stay for two weeks? Penske who I rented the truck from charges $100 per day for late turn in’s on their trucks, and I will lose the house since the contract calls for closing by the end of the 6th. This order does not really define ESSENTIAL. They generally say gas and food stores are essential, but it is not good enough in the USA to enact what amounts to fundamental laws that are that vague.

I’m another person who lives in Florida (West Palm – Miami area). I agree with the above poster, there is no way to close public beaches short of putting military / police presence on every one and there are thousands of miles of beaches. People out walking their dogs or jogging alone on the beaches aren’t the problem. It’s large groups of people like Spring Breakers. Those groups are essentially gone now here in Florida once the Spring Break crowd left. The locals know better.

Also our bars/restaurants have been closed for almost 2 weeks now other than takeout/delivery. So for the most part we are already where the rest of the country is minus the ‘executive order’ to stay home.

Personally, I agree 100% with this post

It is not like we could not predict (and some of us did) this was going to get entirely out of control, not just the virus but the reaction to it. I am on the road moving to Florida, will stay just west of San Antonio tonight. My RE agent says do not go through Louisiana because you will get stopped at the border and quarantined. I am fine with that as long as they are paying and it is in a nice hotel. And they are going to feed me. We can do the closing paperwork by Esign and fax. As it is the lady from the title company tried to cancel the closing and when all parties objected she agreed we could do it as scheduled but I have to stay in my vehicle and wear mask and gloves. That is going to be interesting. And I suppose from a legal standpoint may be good for me, because if I ever want to contest the validity of the transaction in future all I have to do is say I was required to sign without benefit of professional advice in my moving truck. Title company will have to make me whole and that is why we pay them thousands per transaction in INSURANCE.

The state does not actually have the power to stop Americans from crossing state lines. They can arrest (reminder, the meaning of the word ARREST = STOP and detain) people suspected of committing a crime : In Terry v. Ohio, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that a person can be stopped and briefly detained by a police officer based on a reasonable suspicion of involvement in a punishable crime.

Moving from Oregon to Florida is last I checked stupid, but not criminal. Mind you Oregon has one of the lowest rates and case loads of CV19 in the country, even now they only have 736 confirmed cases, nearly all in the Portland metro, I am from the southern most part of the state. There are fewer than 20 cases in my old county even now.

My RE purchase contract gives me till the COB April 6 to close. If they stop me I will lose my house. That is entirely an overreaction and an illegal violation of my and the seller’s rights. This entire response to the virus is turning into a blueprint for a police state far worse than the Chinese model. It is as if the pandemic is the last brick in the wall of totalitarianism in America. And maybe that was WHY they ignored it as long as they did, in order for it to become an emergency that required just this response.

And as I write CNN is on and it is 100% over the top appeals to fear and sentimentality, death and dying and official mismanagement.

It is not just a clusterfuck it is an intentional excuse for ending your freedoms.

I live in Florida. Local counties had already issued stay at home orders. Schools have been closed for over two weeks now. Non-essential businesses are closed. As for the beaches I don’t know what people mean by CLOSING beaches. Our beaches are public and will tell you that outside of some beaches having county employed life guards or having county parking on the beach you CANNOT close a beach here in Florida. I have no clue what people are talking about closing a beach. I have to go to work as I am classified as essential and I pass cops everyday to and from work and they have never once attempted to pull me over. I was surprised to see this story about Florida as if we were just partying on and going about our business as if nothing was going.

“Many beaches were open”

Virginia had closed schools for academic year and had stay at home if possible already in place / close some non essential business till April 23rd. But videos came out of the boardwalk and beach area at Virginia Beach this weekend; full of people. Governor not happy and closed beaches AND extended shut down till June 10th.

June 10th extension big mistake on his part (imo). Could have done rolling extensions to achieve same. By drawing his line in the sand, it became a death knell for many businesses (especially restaurants) … not to mention accelerating losses for many enterprises expecting to be paid. As an example, landlords. With old lock down till 4/23, many would have paid rent on first of April and hoped smoke cleared by end of month. Now? If you KNEW there was no way you could pay May rent (since you were a cook), why bother to pay April? Conserve what little capital you have.

“Recently the President mentioned that if this drags on, we’ll see suicides rise. It already has. Just yesterday a pretty 19 year old girl killed herself. The lockdown was making her crazy.”

Are you sure you’re a libertarian Mish? You seem to decry “not enough government action” and “there’s too much freedom”. I’ve always felt leave people to their own devices – if they get sick and die, that’s their problem from their choices. Having a government enforce such things always leads down a bad road. See: the Fed, war on poverty, war on drugs, war on terrorism, and now a war on death.

Denninger noted that “…in Italy they did a retrospective look at “CV” deaths and found fewer than one in five was plausibly caused by Coronavirus. That you had coronavirus doesn’t mean you died of coronavirus.”

Denninger also noted that “…in NYC fewer than 20% are making it off ventilators.”

According to China data fwiw CFR was 2.3% but reduced to 0.9% without comorbidity.

However, and granular data is in some study somewhere, comorbidity is more associated with older age group, meaning that reduction in CFR is probably more evident in the older age groups.

Then there is a possible lower IFR, and also possible false reporting by China.

So, well you can include or exclude who you like in any figures, you can even “calculate” just for yourself, but you won’t really know if you were right till after catching the virus :/ .

Here is another article that has an attempt at overview

You know my view already, starts at 1% IFR for people in reasonable health, maybe 0.2% in under fifties. It could be much higher depending on various factors, not likely to be much lower even under an ideal setting.

My county in FL closed all public boat ramps a week ago because someone took a pic of some boats anchored together😂. The one thing I could still do to isolate myself is now out of the question. But cars are everywhere on the roads down here at least as of yesterday when I had to run out. HD, Lowes, BJ’s, Costco, Target, Wal-Mart etc are packed full with people but at least the boat ramp was closed. Wow, think of how many lives they saved from that!! FL was late and will pay the price for it….

It is the same story here in Georgia. Can any of these politicians explain us how Lowes and HD became essential services? They are selling mulch, paint, fertilizers and all sorts of things. Are those essential? There is no willingness to do the right thing as these politicians bow down to pressure from big boxes

I made a comment similar to Sechel’s in a Tweet yesterday. I will look for it.
