Gretta Finally Does Something Useful, Germany Postpones Nuclear Shutdown

Germany will create the “legal basis” necessary to keep all three of its remaining nuclear power plants running until mid-April, Chancellor Olaf Scholz said Monday, as the country faces an energy crisis this winter.

“The legal basis will be created to allow the operation of the nuclear power plants Isar 2, Neckarwestheim 2 and Emsland beyond December 31, 2022 until April 15, 2023,” Scholz said in a statement. The government had previously only agreed to keep two of the three plants going beyond their planned end-of-year phaseout.

The above as reported by Insider Paper.

Germany’s Green Economy Minister Makes Fool of Himself

“Nuclear power and fossil fuels brought us here. They caused this crisis, they are not the solution,” said Robert Habeck, Vice-Chancellor of Germany.

That spectacular bit of economic nonsense got Habeck a standing ovation from economically illiterate Greens.

Wrong Bet

Did Gretta Play a Role?

On October 11, Politico reported Greta Thunberg Calls Germany Using Coal Over Nuclear a ‘Bad Idea’

Climate activist Greta Thunberg has slammed Berlin’s plan to shut down its remaining nuclear plants while increasing coal-fired power in comments that thrilled Germany’s pro-nuclear politicians and irked Greens.

Asked if nuclear was preferable for the climate, Thunberg said: “It depends. If they are already running, I think it would be a mistake to shut them down and turn to coal.”

Germany had planned to close its remaining three nuclear plants at the end of the year. With a gas squeeze and extended outages of French nuclear plants causing shortages and price spikes, two of the reactors are now likely to have their lives extended, but only until April.

Thunberg’s comments were immediately seized on by pro-nuclear politicians, even within the ruling coalition.

Finance Minister Christian Lindner, who is from the liberal Free Democratic Party, said he welcomed Thunberg’s “encouragement … in this energy war, everything that creates electricity capacity has to be connected to the grid. The reasons speak for themselves — economically and physically.”

Telling and Accurate Comment

If even the patron saint of the Greens advocates for the continued operation of nuclear power plants, you know what ideological amateur work [Greens Economy Minister] Robert Habeck and his party are engaged in,” said Florian Hahn, an MP with the Bavarian Christian Social Union.

Until April 15, 2023 or Beyond?

There are a couple of key questions in play, the most obvious is whether or not sanity rules past the extended deadline.

The second question is how long the Free Democratic Party (FDP) is willing to stay in this nonsensical 3-way “traffic light” coalition of socialists and Greens.

Traffic light refers to party colors, red, yellow, green.

FDP Attack From Within

On October 10, Reuters reported German Coalition, Beset by Crises, Could Get More Fractious After Vote.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s faced the prospect of a more divided government after one of his coalition partners vowed to assert itself more strongly following a drubbing in a state election.

The pro-business, fiscally-hawish FDP, which has suffered a series of poor results in state elections this year, blamed in part its participation in the national administration.

The party, which is now polling 6%-8% at national level, down from the 11.5% it scored in the federal election last year, is not a natural ideological fit with the SPD and Greens, and their so-called “traffic light” coalition was unprecedented.

While the coalition is not expected to collapse any time soon, it could get more fractious, making it even harder for Scholz to lead the country through a European energy and cost-of-living crisis, and a stand-off with Russia over the war in Ukraine.

On Monday, SPD and Greens leaders called on the coalition to remain united despite the parties’ mixed fortunes in the Lower Saxony election and a slump in support for all three at national level.

Many of the FDP’s voters in Lower Saxony drifted towards Alternative for Germany, which nearly doubled its share of the vote.

That reflected a broader national surge in support for the far-right party due to frustrations with the government’s response to the energy crisis and fears over the future as recession looms in Europe’s largest economy.

Obvious Compromise Will Please No One

The FDP wants all three extended until 2024, and a further two plants reactivated.

Habeck, in an alternate universe, blames nuclear energy for the crisis instead on Merkel’s inane decision to phase it out.

The obvious compromise by Chancellor Olaf Scholz, one that will please no one, is today’s announcement to temporarily extend all three nuclear plants until April of 2023.

The FDP general secretary said “We must prevent left-wing projects being implemented in this coalition.”

Indeed.

The correct action would be to scrap the scrapping totally, keeping the nuclear plants running indefinitely.

Likely directly related to Europe’s winter woes, Russia has now eviscerated Ukraine’s power stations (one third destroyed by missile and drone in the last week). This came from a Zelensky report, so propaganda is possible–trying hard to get additional US aid. If true, it will only get worse as Putin takes a page from the US-in-Iraq book: Infrastructure, what infrastructure?
I keep saying it ain’t over ’til the fat person sings.

Get us through the winter o great atom. Maybe the war will be over and those unpopular nuke plants will just all be replaced with the nearly as efficient new solar tech. Russian gas will flow and all will be as it was before.
Solar:
Wait. That new solar will take some time and investment.
Lets resolve to meet again to approve another winter of atomic energy next April.
A quintessential political solution.

“Wait. That new solar will take some time and investment.”
According to Bloomberg New Energy Finance, the cost of wind rose by 10% between the first quarters of 2021 and 2022 while solar rose 12% and lithium-ion batteries rose 15%. The culprit in all cases was a combination of rising material prices (themselves a function of higher energy costs) and higher capital costs.

Wind.
The CEO of Siemens Gamesa, Jochen Eickholt, said: “The competition is rather fierce and, in the past, there was an element where people wanted to gain market share at the expense of profitability too often.” The two firms have increased their prices by a double-digit percentage over the last year.

Kazakhstan, Canada and Australia account for most of it, I’m sure Putin’s gonna invade them next, to get the “Nazi’s”, of course.

These sceptics think it’s no big deal that there’s lots of rare earths outside of China … you just need to start a mine and production facilities.
Same with gold. More gold in the ocean than has ever been mined. You just have to distillate the ocean water.
They think you can snap your fingers and abracadabra, new pipelines, harbors, shipping, refineries, manufacturing plants, etc.
Kazakhstan makes a huge proportion of the yellow cake, and Russia of the usable rods.
Hell if you have iron ore & bauxite, like in Guyana, why worry about smelters & steel mills. LOL

Kazak mines a lot more than just ‘cake.
As soon as Kazakhstan starts processing it themselves, Putin will attack the “Nazi’s” there too.

Nothing. Kazakhstan is opposed to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. K. appears to wonder if Putin might annex them next though pathetic shape of Russian military precludes that for now.

Which is why Xi said that economic growth is no longer his focus. His focus is now on better developing China’s internal tech industry. I guess that’s because Biden just kneecapped Chinese tech.
What does this all mean. More disruption of global supply chains and slower world economic growth.

For good or for bad (depending on where people sit in the political spectrum), Biden just delivered a heavy blow to China. Far more serious than anything Trump ever did. Come to think of it, I can’t remember if Trump actually did much of anything, other than talk about how great he was. Of course, I imagine I eventually won’t remember much of what Biden is doing either. Lol!
For those who believe in open markets, free trade, globalism, and world wide economic growth, this is bad.
And of course, the entire West is sanctioning Russia and turning them into another North Korea, an international pariah, in response to Putin’s crimes against Ukraine.
As always, there is nothing I can do about these situations, other than to figure out ways to profit.
Oil and gas are a good place to be invested.

Germany is sending Ukraine plenty of weapons to fight the fascists, rather than ignoring it like Russia wants. As a result, they are realizing that nuke plants are safer than Russian petrochemicals.
The Germans are standing up and making a sacrifice to help stop the Russian invasion. Traitors don’t understand how this can possibly be.

When I read this story all I see is increased demand for oil and gas after the three nuclear plants are closed in April. I cannot change what Germany (or Greta) is doing. But I can profit from it.
Meanwhile, oil prices have dropped from $120 to $85, as the world has managed to add almost 10 Mbpd of supply in the last year or so (OPEC 6.5, US 2.1, SPR 1, Canada 0.3).
However, some of that extra supply is about to disappear. We will be losing 2.0 Mbpd or more by January 2023. (SPR 1, OPEC 0.8, Russia ?) European sanctions on Russian oil begin in December.
Some people are under the illusion that the US can somehow increase production to make up the difference. We cannot make up another 2 Mbpd. Perhaps we could do another 0.3 Mbpd. But US production is close to max, just like OPEC. If you listen to US oil executives, they are making this argument already. Expanding production any further is starting to get very expensive, and not really worth the effort. Better to just spend the capex needed to simply maintain production and rake in the cash flow, pay down debt, and reward shareholders.

Is that US 2.1 all from production or is 1 million of it from draining the SPR which clearly isn’t sustainable much longer?

US production dropped to a low of 9.7 Mbpd in May 2020 and is back up to 11.8 Mbpd now. That 2.1 increase is production, which is separate from the 1 Mbpd from SPR.
SPR releases first began in Nov 2021 with 50 Mb. Then a second announcement of 180 Mb in March 2022. And recently another 10 Mb for this November.

Finally some sanity on the part of Germany. They literally waited till the rubber hit the road to make this decision but at least they made the right one.
The Greens are fools who think that unicorns come when called to solve any climate related problem. In this case the unicorn they wanted was an immediate supply of green energy large enough to supply the entire country.
If Habeck had just amended his statement to say ‘They are not the solution long term’ he would have been fine and could have justified short term continued use of nuclear and fossil fuels. In reality, it’s likely going to take decades to fully transition and it’s possible those decades may hit 100 years before it’s all complete.

In this case they needed her to affirm the continued operation of the nuclear plants. At some point in the future she will be trotted out again to affirm the decision to close them.
