More Trade War Fallout, BYD Inquires About Buying a Canada Stellantis Plant

BYD is investigating buying an idled Stellantis plant near Toronto.

Patrick Brown, the mayor of Brampton, Ontario, said BYD Asked About Taking Over Canada Stellantis Plant.

Chinese carmaker BYD Co. inquired about taking over an idled Stellantis NV plant in the Toronto suburbs, according to a local politician, signaling possible global interest in Canadian auto hubs in the midst of a trade battle with the US.

Brown said he also received inquiries from Leapmotor International, a joint venture between Zhejiang Leapmotor Technology Co. and Stellantis, as well as from an Italian automaker. Bloomberg News reported in April that Stellantis was discussing options for building electric vehicles in Canada with Leapmotor.

Most of the vehicles Canada produces are exported to the US, but the trade war and the lack of a new product earmarked for the 40-year-old factory have clouded the future for thousands of people who work there. Unifor, the union representing those workers, said this month that Stellantis is considering selling the plant.

“If the US takes a position that causes us to no longer be able to be a partner with them on autos, there is a world of possibilities,” Brown said. “There are global companies that want Canadian manpower.”

“Stellantis told me that as long as there’s tariffs on autos, there’s no business case for auto jobs in Canada,” Brown said. That’s the situation “whether it’s an 8% tariff, a 50% tariff, or 100% tariff,” he added.

Canadian defense firms Roshel Inc. and Dominion Dynamics also asked about the facility, Brown said, with Roshel interested in building light-utility armored vehicles and Dominion in building drones. Neither company responded to a request for comment.

“All these companies that came into our office expressed that some of the fundamental equipment existed in the Stellantis plant allowing for an effective transition,” Brown said.

If Trump does not want to work with Canada, then Canada can produce cars for China.

This was not a Ford or GM plant, but let both companies make their own parts at higher expense and cost.

Trade Deals Are Picking Up Globally

Please note Trade Deals Are Picking Up Globally, Just Not with Trump

Trump fosters new deals for India and Canada, not the US.

There are deals to be had, and the world is making them without Trump. This pattern will continue.

Canadian industry is oligarchic, they ain’t angels.

During the 2010’s, Canada dumped $20 billion in Chinese steel in the U.S. through a simple maneuver: All of Canada’s domestic needs were fulfilled with Chinese steel; and all of Canada’s steel production went to US export, tariff-free under NAFTA. Thus, $20 billion in dumping. “Elbows up”, indeed.

BYD is a hell of a company that very quickly came out with major competitive EVs and exploded to top market share in China. (And recall Munger got Buffet in on them early and BYD has never looked back.)

IMO they are the premier Global EV company. They jumped right into the Chinese market with EV auto leadership from early on. I’m sure all of Detroit is on the phone with their DC contacts.

But Detroit can’t be saved from itself anymore. I’ll never forget when they started to get their butt kicked by the Japanese. An incompetence example: my stepdad bought a beautiful new red Olds . Big beautiful car. But look deeper. My Camry had 3+ glove boxes where EVERY ONE WAS BIGGER THAN THE MAIN ’88 SINGLE glove box!. The ’88’s PATHETIC glove box had the “you’re kidding aren’t you?” depth of about 5 maps you could fit into it! This, and many Detroit cars were like twinkies. Nice on the outside but lacking under the skin.

Yes POST GFC Detroit has gotten some religion. But they DID just overshoot the EV market and wroteoff $ billions. Meanwhile Toyota banked on hybrids and was spot on.

Ford Canada recently settled with the Canadian Auto Workers Union: $50/hr
That’s 10X more than China or Mexico.
In China, BYD wants their plants fully automated, no human workers.
In North America, autoworker unions are strong, full automation unlikely.
Any BYD plant in Canada will be unionized & incredibly inefficient compared to their Chinese plants.
Consumers in North American need a break. We don’t take a mortgage out to buy a TV why must we do it for a car?
Let China raise our standard of living!

The only constant is change

By 2050, 24 years away, the world will be producing roughly half of the 100 million barrels of oil that it currently produces. Obviously ice car manufacturing is about to undergo radical changes. A 20 year old entering ice manufacturing would be lucky to still have a career in that same industry at 45 years old.

As to exactly how car manufacturing evolves remains to be seen. In any event, most of Canada is well prepared for electrical vehicles as a large amount of electricity is produced everywhere except Saskatchewan and Alberta. from mostly hydro or nuclear.

When the tariffs were first announced, I was skeptical of the US returning manufacturing just on the belief that it is about to undergo a serious power generation crisis over the next few years. I still believe that to be true. You can google to your hearts content of a coming power generation crisis in America.

BYD Factory in Canada: Assembly Plant and Acquisition Plans | China-EV Canada

Why a Canadian Factory Changes Everything
A BYD assembly plant on Canadian soil would be a game-changer for multiple reasons.
First, it would let BYD completely bypass the import quota system, which currently caps Chinese EV imports at 49,000 vehicles per year. A Canadian-assembled BYD Seal or Dolphin would not count against that quota — it would be a Canadian-made vehicle.

And as America is about to meet an impending power generation crisis. An emergency has been declared regarding foreign made electrical equipment most of which comes from China and already has min 5 year waiting backlogs, eg. transformers, turbines, etc.

Im surprised much more print hasnt been dedicated to even making the power generation crisis upcoming even larger. Definitely will make power generation even more costlier.

Trump declares emergency, moves to block some foreign-made equipment from grid | Utility Dive

“President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed an executive order preparing to block utilities from connecting some foreign-made equipment to the bulk power system, including transformers, batteries, inverters and associated software and digital products.

The order also contemplates the replacement of already-installed equipment, allowing the Secretary of Energy to “impose conditions on the continued use, operation, maintenance, servicing, or updating of foreign manufactured or operated bulk-power system electric equipment acquired or installed before the date of this order.”

Trump Bans More Power Equipment

This is the second attempt by the Trump administration to ban use of equipment that might be used to harm the US utility grid.

An earlier bulk-system power order on May 1, 2020 made it illegal immediately to acquire, import or install transmission and electric generating equipment supplied by companies in any country that the US considers a foreign adversary. The earlier order was unclear about what exactly was illegal and was never fully implemented. (For earlier coverage, see here and here).

Trump officials went out of their way in calls to industry trade associations and interviews soon after the earlier order to downplay concerns that equipment might have to be ripped out and replaced. A list of frequently-asked questions posted to the DOE website on the heels of the earlier order said, “As of today, no equipment is prohibited . . . . As such, any immediate steps by owners or operators would not only be premature, but may be unnecessary.”

Some tax equity investors and lenders moved quickly to require developers to fund any future costs to replace equipment that the government decides is a threat to the grid. Such provisions remain in many financing documents.

The goal on their side is that they know there will be a new agreement with Canada eventually (even if it’s after Trump leaves office). By being able to build in Canada they hope to be able to sneak those cars into the US because they will qualify under the trade agreement.

Whether or not that happens no one knows for sure. But that’s the goal and its no secret.

Two thirds of Americans and Canadians have a home with a garage where they can easily charge an EV or PHEV. That is where over 80% of all charging happens. Not much charging infrastructure is needed because the average ev driver takes fewer than 5 road trips per year that require public charging.

Only after spending between $2000 and up (maybe $8000) depending on existing electrical service to install a reasonably fast charger. Normal 110V USA system will only deliver very slow charging. If you live in a rental or apartment you will be using a public charger.

I expect that this will play out like Australia. A decade ago, Chinese companies had about 3% of the Australian automotive market. Japan was the largest source of cars for the Austalian market. Today, Chinese companies have about a 30% share of the Australian market, larger than the Japanese share. Once Chinese electric vehicles were allowed in Australia, the Australians found they were vastly superior to European and Japanese EV makes, and came at a lower price. This probably would have happened anyway, but COVID was an external shock that accelerated the process. Canada is now going to start allowing Chinese vehicles in, and the tarrifs are the external shock. In a decade, expect a third to half of all Canadian vehicle sales to be Chinese.

They took over the market because the other manufactures decided Australia wasn’t worth the hassle. A small population far from any other market and what’s worse is they drive on the wrong side of the road compared to Japan / America etc.

BTW, they DID NOT get low cost Chinese EVs. The prices you pay in China for the same car are vastly cheaper than Australia. The obvious reason is because the Chinese aren’t stupid, even if they can make it for 15K they are still selling it for 40K in Australia because that’s the price the market will bear. And before anyone asks, the shipping costs aren’t much and there are no tariffs since there is no domestic car industry, it’s just pure profit for China.

HUGE chess move. Suddenly it appears inevitable.

THIS is the USA’s “Suez moment.” THIS is the moment that Trump and his follower’s folly have at last historically, globally undone the USA. (Yes, credit goes elsewhere, over time, but overwhelmingly right to Trump.)

Previously I felt contempt and anger. Now immediately I feel bottomless dread. Everything we didn’t like about the Chinese system is about to become the global system, and ours, or else we can (maybe, for awhile) elect poverty and exclusion.

The tech elites will have no problem embracing this. The low man on the totem pole, the capital structure, the one about to be demoted, is the “regular person.” But Trump always dripped with contempt for that person anyway, as anything but a sycophant, or a smiling productivity puppet. So, not so far from a Maoist poster after all.

Okay Stu. A little to think about: Canada doesn’t have a Canadian auto industry. All of its auto factories are owned by foreign companies. The factory BYD is interested in isn’t owned by Canadians. It is owned by a French-American consortium called Stellantis. Stellantis is going to have to throw thousands of Canadians out of work because of the tariffs Donald Trump is forcing on what used to be our good friends in Canada. So here is what you should think about: why would the Canadians care if a plant is owned by the Chinese (who are building the future world) or the Franco-Americans, who are desperately trying to hang on to the past world (and failing miserably)?
