NBA Suspends All Games, Sports Jackass of the Year Awarded

Utah Jazz Superstar Rudy Gobert Mocks the Coronavirus

Rudy Gobert touched every microphone, recorder and reporter in the media room two days ago.

Then guess what? He tested positive for the coronavirus.

NBA Suspends Season Due to Coronavirus

The rest is one for the history books: The NBA Suspends Season Due to Coronavirus

The National Basketball Association season was suspended indefinitely on Wednesday night after a dramatic incident in which two teams were pulled off the court seconds before a game began and a player for the Utah Jazz tested positive for the coronavirus.

Oklahoma City Thunder and Utah Jazz players were moments from beginning their scheduled game on Wednesday when the abrupt postponement occurred after Jazz superstar Rudy Gobert tested positive for the virus. He became the first major professional athlete infected in the U.S.

The league immediately suspended the season—capping an extraordinary day of turbulent upheaval in U.S. sports.

“The NBA will use this hiatus to determine next steps for moving forward in regard to the coronavirus pandemic,” the league said.

Only two days earlier, in an attempt to poke fun at NBA restrictions that kept players at a safe distance from reporters in media availability sessions, Gobert went out of his way to touch every microphone and recording device in front of him with both hands.

Rudy Gobert Wins Jackass Award

For his historic display of public stupidity, I hereby award Rudy Gobert the not coveted Sports Jackass of the Year™ award.

Nation Hockey League Considers the Same

I expect the NHL and Major League Baseball to do the same.

The open question is how big will the fine be on Rudy Gobert for flagrant rules violations?

In case you missed it, please see A Clearly Rattled Trump Bans All Travel From EU Starting Friday.

The economic ramifications are immense.

The US is now in recession, assuming it wasn’t already.

Correction

I commented the NHL suspended the season.

They are reviewing the situation.

Howdy companions, I might want to share an entrance in which some betting destinations are gathered, they are checked and totally dependable with installments. I’m certain in the event that you go here https://newcasinos-au.com/ you will discover something for yourself and won’t stay apathetic. One has just to attempt to completely change yourself to improve things.

I’m glad they canceled, as disappointing as it may be for the players & everyone. Hopefully, it can be rescheduled. We need to look at the big picture & get this outbreak under control. You sound like a great coach & human being…best of luck!

Why did they wait until someone tested positive?

When L.A. County declared an emergency on March 4, the Lakers/Clippers game should have been cancelled by the county. In fact, as L.A. had one of the first cases, an emergency should have been declared by them, weeks before.

I didn’t see Pence but CNBC was something. Jim Cramer looked ashen and made a cryptic reference to ‘ if we live through this’. Never seen him so subdued. I think he tested positive!

Who else is getting up in the mornings half asleep, flipping on the net and still in disbelief? The NBA canceling? This crap is real. I just started a new job, im considering just not going in I can hold out for awhile. I dont think I could ever just stay home meaning if 70% get it ill end up with it most likely so im not sure what im going to do.

Gobert should get a lifetime ban for his stupidity and his personal safety ( I assume he will not die from his infection. Imagine how the other players in the league feel about Gobert being the proximate cause of their losing a years pay? Pro athletes have limited careers. In the NBA its about 4.5 years so losing just one season is a major blow for the non superstar players lifetime income.

Here’s a story for you:

I coach a junior sport at a high level and we have a major event this weekend where for three days there will be upwards of 25,000 athletes, coaches, and spectators not to mention vendors, janitorial staff, and all the other support apparatus required to make it happen – all together inside a convention center in a major city – all day from 7 AM to 10 PM – for three straight days.

For the past week, they have resisted any calls for cancellation making the excuse that the WHO hasn’t called it a pandemic and that the CDC was telling them the risk was low.

Yesterday we received a tersely worded email advising us that until a government entity with jurisdiction told them they had to close, the event was considered moving forward as planned.

We received another email late last evening after the “pandemic” announcement was made telling us that even though the governing body of the sport (a US Olympic body) has NOW recommended that the organizers cancel, they feel they have an obligation and responsibility to the teams who want to attend and because the wording from the governing body said “recommendation” and not “mandate” they were not obligated to obey.

Bear in mind that teams travel to this event from all over the US and US protectorates by air in most case, and without them cancelling the event, any team who backs out voluntarily loses their entry fees and parents cannot recoup refunds for hotel rooms or flights. And any club who backs out faces the threat of sanctions for future events.

Think about this: Each team (probably 800 or so) pays around $1000 to enter the tournament; each team has to rent a number of hotel rooms in the city at hotels who have a deal with the governing body; and each spectator pays around $50 to $60 for a weekend pass or $25 per day. This doesn’t include vendor income or the income generated for local restaurant/bar businesses. Also doesn’t include money already paid to the facility for rent, or logistical teams who run setup/tear-down….etc.

They can make all the excuses, prevarications, and rationalizations they like – this is about one thing: Money.

I am writing this from my seat on a plane headed to this event…

Good times, noodle salad.

Just got word that they received some “new information” and decided to go ahead and cancel.

It’s the right move, just wish it would have been made before I got on this damn plane.

We are in the same boat here. I coach a robotics team that has world championships at the end of April.

Attendance to this is 70k fans, 20k participating. All foreign teams are not coming. A lot of current events being cancelled.

Yet they continue the show must go on unless Fed or State government says no.

This leads me to believe they’re hoping to have a force majeure clause in their insurance kick in. Just a guess.

If the governing body refuses to cancel, as I said in what I wrote, we – and the athletes and parents – are over a barrel.

As a coach, when we go to a tournament, I am responsible for them 24×7 for the duration as some of them travel without parents.

If they have to travel, I have to travel. And unfortunately, I have to travel earlier to take care of administrative matters at the site before the bulk of the team arrives.

So you can act all high-and-mighty about what you would or would not have done, and call me a fool, but in my position, I have to live up to my responsibilities as a coach. That’s what I signed up for.

Oh, finally some positives. Maybe they will also cancel the Olympics, and bankrupt the Olympic Games Flying Circus. That would cut world corruption by maybe 25%, and massively cut greenhouse gas emissions. One can always dream.

My son lives in Japan and is married to a Japanese national. Somehow it was leaked out that the government was under-reporting. He moved his family to a safer, more remote place and people in Tokyo (and elsewhere) are beginning to panic. I can only imagine that, if true, the Japanese government was trying to save the Olympic Games.

Mish, what is your view on gold? Would love to get an update on where you see it going in short and long term. Is it safe to be in cash? Is it safe to be in USD? Is it safe to have money in the bank? If quarantines cut off access to physical PM’s, will there be a panic to get into them once businesses start reopening? Is it better to lock in prices at the current level or wait for deflation to take hold? What is the best place to park money right now?
