With arrest of a top California leader, organized labor takes the side of undocumented migrants against Trump.
Labor Leader Released on Bond
The New York Times reports Labor Leader Arrested During Immigration Protest Is Released on Bond
A Los Angeles labor leader who has become a national rallying cry after he was arrested and apparently injured during a protest over an immigration raid last week appeared on Monday in a federal court for a bail hearing on a charge of conspiring to impede an officer and was released on a $50,000 bond.
The arrest of the official, David Huerta, the president of the Service Employees International Union California, drew swift condemnation from Democratic elected officials, labor leaders and immigrant rights groups across the country.
If he is convicted, he faces up to six years in federal prison.
“Labor leaders, labor in every industry, the Trades, the Teamsters — even those who might be more inclined to be Republican — everybody is against it,” said Lorena Gonzalez, president of the powerful California Federation of Labor Unions. “We all know David Huerta. He’s been involved in the labor movement for a long time — a long time. And we know he’s not a criminal.”
The U.S. attorney for Los Angeles, Bill Essayli, has maintained that Mr. Huerta is simply facing the consequences for what he portrays as an effort to interfere with the enforcement of federal immigration laws.
“Let me be clear: I don’t care who you are — if you impede federal agents, you will be arrested and prosecuted,” Mr. Essayli said on X.
When Mr. Huerta stood in the path of a white law enforcement van trying to get into the parking lot, an agent “put his hands” on him, according to the complaint.
“I saw Huerta push back, and in response, the officer pushed Huerta to the ground,” the agent wrote.
Video of the episode shows Mr. Huerta on the ground, with the right side of his head resting awkwardly on a curb, surrounded by federal agents and being handcuffed. Union colleagues and immigrant advocates say that Mr. Huerta was pepper sprayed.
Trump’s Immigration Plans Meet a Powerful Adversary
The Wall Street Journal reports Trump’s Immigration Plans Meet a Powerful Adversary: Unions
Unions, which have felt conflicted lately over how to deal with Trump, found an issue this past weekend over which to confront him: immigration.
It came after the head of the state’s biggest union was arrested here for allegedly obstructing federal agents from conducting an immigration raid. The union says he was “peacefully observing.” David Huerta, president of Service Employees International Union California, appeared in court Monday afternoon. He was released on $50,000 bail.
Just a half mile away, his union, which represents a swath of working-class California, including nurses, janitors and security guards, organized a sprawling protest in downtown’s Grand Park. Other unions declared solidarity with the SEIU and with immigrants caught up in federal raids.
The clash may become a watershed in how organized labor deals with Trump. In recent years many rank-and-file union members warmed to Trump’s outreach to working-class voters. Union leaders, who traditionally back Democrats, have wavered over how stringently to oppose him, if at all. Their decision to fight him in this instance in no small part reflects the growing presence of immigrants in union ranks.
As of Monday, the regional branches of the Teamsters and United Auto Workers, though not their national leaders, and the national AFL-CIO had expressed solidarity with SEIU. Members of other local unions, including one that represents hotel and airport workers, showed up at the protest. Many said they saw labor and immigration as one fight.
“The struggle is very intertwined,” said Maddisen Arguijo, 34 years old, a flight attendant who is a member of a different union for flight attendants and was at the park Monday.
Immigrants in Los Angeles “do essential work that we need, that we cannot do without,” she said. “To pretend like that is not the truth of the matter and demoralize them and act like they are criminals and all these insane things that are being said in the media, it’s a fallacy.”
Immigrants made up one-third of California’s labor force in 2023, according to census data, compared with 18% for the overall U.S. (The data doesn’t distinguish by legal status.)
Alfred Muñoz, an Amazon delivery driver, said he joined the protest Monday because Huerta and the SEIU have supported the Teamsters’ effort to organize his workplace. Huerta sent SEIU members to join a picket line during a multiday strike at Amazon in December, said Muñoz, 43.
“If they can support us, then why can’t we support them?” Muñoz said. He added that he has family members who are immigrants and are concerned about Trump’s policies. “You never know when ICE is going to come, and that’s a messed-up feeling.”
One reason the ICE raids have drawn such protests is that Los Angeles is home to precisely the sort of undocumented immigrants that Americans, according to polls, don’t think should be targeted: long-established residents who pay taxes and have never committed a crime.
In the Los Angeles metropolitan area, 72% of Hispanic immigrants with a high-school education or less—a group that includes many undocumented immigrants—have been in the country for more than 20 years, compared with 54% nationwide and 43% in Florida, according to 2023 census data aggregated by IPUMS at the University of Minnesota.
Whether the rank and file back Trump or their leaders on immigration remains to be seen, and may depend largely on their demographics and region of the country. Many of the blue-collar workers from which unions traditionally drew their strength also cheered his promise to toughen up border security and step up deportations.
Economic Idiocy
Trump was itching for a fight, and got it, but he may not like the result.
Going after hard-working immigrants who have been here for years is certain economic idiocy. It’ s political idiocy too, but perhaps not initially.
I applaud Maddisen Arguijo, a 34 year-old flight attendant who said “Immigrants in Los Angeles do essential work that we need, that we cannot do without. To pretend like that is not the truth of the matter and demoralize them and act like they are criminals and all these insane things that are being said in the media, it’s a fallacy.”
Economic fools and bigots want to deport them all. Construction work would stall, crops would rot in the fields, and hotels would run out of cleaning staff.
That is on top of the costs to round everyone, hold them, them deport them.
And have any of these fools looked at the massive wave of aging boomers retiring every day?
The bigots don’t give a damn. The fools applaud because they are fools. But they will all complain when labor shortages cause a huge surge in inflation.
Gavin Newsom Dares Homan to Arrest Him, Trump Says Homan Should
Also see Gavin Newsom Dares Homan to Arrest Him, Trump Says Homan Should
Should Homan Arrest Governor Gavin Newsom?
I see no gain for Republicans for an arrest of Newsom. I rather doubt they do it. If so, chalk up another TACO.
I gave both Trump and Newsom a grade F for handling this mess in LA.
Hoot of the Day on the National Guard
“We can’t call in the National Guard unless we’re requested by a governor.”
A Deal for Dreamers
We need a Congressional deal that guarantees the rights of dreamers who have been in the US for a long time and are productive members of the US.
Consideration also applies to those whose spouses are US citizens, and those with citizen children.
It is economically stupid and morally unjust to not work out such a deal.

I read an article that reminds us you don’t have to be a legal resident to join the SEIU. So again, this is a red herring. Of course, the SEIU is going to come out against Trump’s response. It’s just a free for all out in Californication.
In the relatively near future these jobs will be automated away and replaced with AI and robotics. Massive populations of unskilled or barely skilled, random foreigners is a major liability.
Oh, so Mish, you don’t like the laws of the land. There is a legal method of immigration and naturalization. I knew several Mexican families in Sacramento, when I lived in California. They were great loving people and a credit to our community. They also followed the law, got visas and were eventually naturalized. Do stupid things (walk across the border without getting a visa) and win stupid (deportation) prizes.
Funny. Public sector unions mostly, although the teamsters got into it also: Follow the money: I’m reminded of one of the Cali college teacher’s unions who didn’t pay into PERS for 20 years and still got their generous PERS pensions an adjusted for the 20 year inflation.while enjoying tenure and first hired and last fired for DEI. And funny how all those Ivy League “Hispanic” students at Stanford, Harvard west, generally were not from the local indigenous Hispanic barrios but from the foreign upper classes with the indigenous whites enjoying their draft exemptions, until the lottery kicked in and then more draft riots ensued, especially after LBJ ended exemptions for graduate school, except for degrees in law, medicine, or the seminary while increasing applications for the draft exempt Peace Corp and the National Guard and reserves to avoid a romp with the boomers in the Big Muddy’s 3rd Corp for some fun with the Big Red One. For example, progressive Senator Da Nang Dick. And Cesar Chavez of the private sector farm worker’s union was not for open borders for 10 million more illegal “dreamers” when alive and kicking before Code Pink and Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 911. Funny how private sector unions have declined over 50 years while public sector unions multiplied following the money from offshore for pussy galore in higher education and for more vagina monologues. At least ’80s Star Wars Reagan fired 1000s during the PATCO’s air traffic control union strike while failing to deport 3 million illegals that General Ike managed to do in the ’50s with no problem in the absence of NAFTA, legal abortions (human sacrifices), and non-productive gay “marriage”, which apparently isn’t a mistaken or inappropriate cultural appropriation when the pulling a train Left does it. . .
If sanctuary states and cities cooperated with ICE by vetting career criminals who are within their judicial system, hardworking undocumented immigrants who participate and contribute to our society would not get caught up in the raids necessary to weed out the criminals among them.

Trump to speak at 4 PM est might be about Trade or might be about LA riots
Stop conflating deporting dangerous criminals with garden-variety illegal immigrants being deported. Thats not happening en masse. They are going for rapists and cartel associates in Los Angeles right now.
Unions today are different. In the sixties I was a card carrying member of three unions, and lost a finger tip at a nonunion packing plant a few mile from Mish”s home. In 70’s i worked in Portland where store clerks made more than nurses.
The labor unions mentioned are enemies of labor and US…. Luring and exploiting tens of millions from other countries to sell drugs, turn the young into prostitutes, work off the books, drain federal, state and local money for subsistence and take jobs from US. A few miles from my home Mother Jones (a bulwark of current unions) describes how their unionized meat-packer sourced hundreds of illegals in the last three years as the Brazil owners ramped up production from 250 cows per hour to over 500.
Union leaders just want their money, and they don’t care how dirty it is. Just look at the anger spewed above and in the DNC media over ICE looking into three businesses in LA last week and arresting some of the “employees.”
Over and over it comes down to the fact that trump did not build the wall and invited mass abuse of our unguarded border. Trump was and is a failure at making America better in any tangible way. Trump only makes things worse and divides.
Never forget that trump has never done a days work in his life and he has bankrupted his business for personal gain and bankrupted many contractors that he refused to pay for their work and materials while building his grandiose lifestyle.
Why is no one questioning why the Russian Ruble is up 30% since January first and the dollar is down 10%?
Trump is killing the American dream and freedom itself.
How long before trumps soldiers are killing Americans in the streets for standing up for the first amendment?
Yeah, no Lorena. Not everyone is against it. Since you work for a labor union which involves, dare I say it, work … How many illegal households in CA are on welfare?
Gonna be a lotta unfinished roadwork, etc. These kids arent going to do it nor can they be forced to. Many of them watch their parents get their teeth kicked in by our wonderful economy and struggle financially until death. Work all week and give walmart all of it. Real motivation. Truth be told these jobs would have to start paying high wages and then it would probably draw in us old guys lol.
Also a bit tired of hearing about people being overpaid. $30hr is nothing these days. Save me the frugal speech. 2k rents. 1k autoloans. And you wonder why juniors in the basement. I understand totally that businesses cant survive paying a lot more or many cases even a little.
So if many people cant survive with things so expensive and most businesses cant afford to pay more id say we have a real problem on our hands. I personally think things are just going to crash. This entire system is a huge pile of crap and I certainly dont have any faith in what comes next esp with the same clowns at the helm.
You’d never know there’s a problem from my rural location. But 1 hour away is downtown Kansas City. Sadly many of my favorite places are closing due to violence. This place is going full on 3rd world.
With all respect Mr. Shedlock, I think a lot of commenters on this post kind of prove your point and the point I would like to add:
The aging boomer demographic seems to be at large very disconnected from the world. They’ve made their money, pulled up the ladder, and expect millennials and zoomers to work McDonald’s jobs forever while they spend their golden years comfortably retired or working a cushy do-nothing upper level job in an office. This is a great deal for them, and they want it to stay that way forever and always. To this demographic, any idea of change no matter how responsible, well thought out, or proven, is anathema on the merit that it is change.
Trump got into the WH despite being a literal felon entirely on the merits of promising a magical 1950s-esque wonderland reminiscent of boomer youth – free of anything and anyone that makes them uncomfortable. Now we see what that wonderland looks like played out. Here’s a question for you: What do you get when you bring back the stupid and repressive culture of the 1950s and try to force it on people who’ve known better with the added bonus of not having the extraordinarily booming economy of the 1950s? The answer: A dysfunctional and dystopic police state powered by literally burning taxpayer dollars that could have fixed roads instead of driving tanks over them for a parade that’d make Saddam Hussein blush.
The best part though, is that not even young white men – the chief winners in the 1950s – stand to gain a single thing from this. No sir, they’re not “hard working” like they used to be! (read: they expect things that boomers got handed like an affordable house and a car and the ability to feed themselves on their wages). My grandfather made $5 an hour sweeping floors at DOW Chemical in 1972. That’s $38.37 an hour today. Now you’re expected to do that work at maybe, if you’re lucky, $2 an hour their money. Gee I wonder why these whippersnappers are too lazy to work now!?
Regardless, the gerontocracy running this nation will simply eat more of everyone’s cake and scream “Why don’t the college educated sissies get construction jobs then? There’s tons now!” as if I went tens of thousands into debt to mow lawns. No, actually, I’ll just be leaving for any of the European countries now offering citizenship and great jobs to people like me with graduate degrees. It is to this effect that this country will probably age out and crumble the same way Korea is set to: under the withering combination of brain draining, deporting, and otherwise discouraging both ends of the candle and the sides for good measure. American “conservatives” (I refuse to share and thereby sully this label by associating it with what is patently a nationalist/reactionary/fascist bunch) don’t want poor migrants to come do hard labor, they don’t want “namby pamby liberals” to do high level work, and they certainly don’t like the middle class daring to eat into their precious tax cuts that would let them live on SS forever while working people slide into bankruptcy.
Now, a question for you and the other commenters: How should we fix the issues here? Surely, there has to be some way to pay Americans actual wages and create actual democratic representation again. We did it once, can we do it again?
Yeah, what was he convicted of in the so called felony charge? Explain it in simple terms.
Fraud…
Simple enough?
Got away with sedition…
Nah, those NY charges were horseshit. Trump will get out of them – and should!
Hey Patrick let me ask you another question, how old are you?
There’s no EU country with good wages, EU is full of Europoors if you actually need to work. Switzerland is not an EU country.
Point is clear if you actively break the Law knowing full well your actions will incite others to do so as well, then off to jail you go and tell your story to the judge.
In a highly charged atmosphere such as getting into a pushing match with those who have been placed there under authority to guard a location then the fault is your own.
Protesting is one thing which is letting your opinion known in public gathering.
You do not have a right to interfere with ongoing activities without consequence.
This is not some innocent actions it is intentional to cause Havoc.
Getting called on it is done rightfully so.
added: If you are such a Man that you wave a Mexican flag in the US, then be a real Man not a coward and go back to Mexico and take on the cartels. No you won’t cause they will cut your Head off and place it on your Car.
I wonder if Trump would have acted this way if mainly white folk had been demonstrating.
You need only look at what he did about Jan 6. 2020 for your answer.
Folk?
“I’ve had it with Trump refusing to use 8 USC 1324. He MUST immediately start arresting employers and landlords. The law on this point is clear. Issue a few dozen indictments and make clear by doing so without fear or favor in terms of the target’s political record and identity that every single landlord and employer you find with illegal immigrants will be charged unless they can present proof that they properly vetted each persons right to be in the U.S. Do this and the problem will disappear in an hour…” Karl Denninger.
True, but those groups make political donations…so they will never be called on the carpet for hiring illegals…
I agree with Mish on most things, but not immigration. It is foolish to think that America will fail without illegal immigrants.
I live in an area where at least 50% of people are on disability and most of it is fraudulent. Come visit rural America and you will see it. There are millions of able bodied American workers that could work these jobs but choose not to. Cut them off the dole and evict the illegals and America will flourish.
Are those fat people on disability immigrants?
If you go back a couple hundred years, yes.
These are about 90% white American Republican voters. They claim all types of ailments. Some obesity but often it’s difficult to prove issues like lower back pain. Some of them tell you all about it and are proud of how clever they are getting approved for this fraud.
I know you are trying to portray this as bigotry, but it’s not. One theory is that disability has replaced the welfare system after the reform in the 90s because the states are off the hook for payments (it’s all federal). The disability numbers are almost 25% nationwide per NPR:
https://apps.npr.org/unfit-for-work/
I think if you took some time to research the issue you would be slower to label people as bigots who disagree with you. America has plenty of workers. The problem is that we are paying them not to.
So does the SEIU pay their legal workforce as much as their illegal workforce?
June 14 is necessarily planned after the school year ended. Thank A Public School Teacher, Administrator, Superintendent …
Yes
– With arrest of a top California leader, organized labor takes the side of undocumented migrants against Trump.
> So does this cement Democrats as the Party of CA. Politics moving forward? If so, do we now treat them ALL as such, and that’s shills for CA. And Unions, Newsom, Pelosi and the rest of the CA. Politicians?
– A Los Angeles labor leader was arrested during a protest over an immigration raid last week.
> He was charged with impeding an Officer. He was released on a 50K Bond.
– If he is convicted, he faces up to six years in federal prison.
> Good, as He broke the Law, that’s the Penalty for His Law Breaking Act, so put Him away, and He should be Removed from any Leadership Role, as a Lawbreaker, unless that’s the way out of breaking the law now days? Just be a Leader of the Democrat Party and All the Law Breaking,, and it’s a “get out of jail free” Union Card?
– said Lorena Gonzalez, president of the powerful California Federation of Labor Unions. “We all know David Huerta. He’s been involved in the labor movement for a long time — a long time. And we know he’s not a criminal.”
> Bur He Is A Criminal, and Got Arrested and Charged for Being A Criminal. The Union Labor Leaders just “Showed There True Colors” They Stand For Illegals, They Stand With CA. politics, and They Stand Against The President of the U.S. So at least we now have it in writing, and proof that’s there Gig!!!
For secure borders = bigot? Conflating illegal immigrants with all immigrants. More gibberish.
Bingo! *At least* two million illegal immigrants need to be removed over the next four years. Sooner would be better, but for some reason it takes them one day to enter *illegally* , but four years to remove them. Sort of like “squatter’s right”, where they can enter your home and change the locks while you are on a two week vacation, and then the police refuse to remove them, and tell you that you have no right to remove them, and you will be arrested if you try to change the locks back.
Americans won’t do jobs? Well its time to get out of mommy’s basement, join the world and go to work. Start paying your college loans back as well because you see little Johnnie, despite what your professors said everything in life is not free and your parents can’t foot the bill for you forever and by the way; jobs do force you to get your hands dirty and no you can’t take your emotional support animal with you to the jobsite. We don’t need immigrants rather American’s spoiled children need to go to work.
When do we start calling out and/or blaming the Parents, for coddling them well past becoming Adults?
So the immigrants go away and the basement people suddenly go to work because of it? Wishful dreaming but not happening. Unless you support commmunism or something.
Errr, the point is exactly the opposite.
A NY Post reporter was shot in the head by a rubber bullet. he says he was clearly identified and the officer that shot him saw him and took aim for no reason.
there’s other video of a WaPo reporter getting shot just a few yards away
Point being the local law enforcement is handling it and is probably committing violations on its own, there is zero need to bring in te national guard. LAPD< the LA Sheriffs are generally republicans and politically not different from ICE.
this is a giant shit show by Trump who is wasting millions of dollars and inflaming a situation for political gain.
“ there is zero need to bring in [the] national guard”
Actually Trump and Steven Miller NEED the NG there to further their Project 2025 Playbook that everyone said Trump would enact if Americans were stupid enough to elect him in 2024. Apparently you still aren’t paying attention to what really matters.
OR… this is a giant shit show by Democrats and the MSM, who are wasting millions of dollars and inflaming a situation for political gain.
Now days, it seems like a take your pick, wait a couple days and rethink it, and take your pick once again.
Biden’s legacy
I think Obama was getting a little worried that Trump would break his deportation record. Barack, your record is safe. Please call off the thugs and end the riots.
How would you have handled the “mostly peaceful” riots in LA, Mish???
By hiding out in Utah!
I would arrest rioters.
I said Both Trump and Newsom made mistakes.
Fools only see one side or the other
Service Employees International Union California
Sounds like a union specifically for illegals.
“Woocoodanoode?”
trump has never been known to be smart. he acts before the situation hits his feeble brain.
#1-At least he has a functioning brain-something we haven’t seen in 4 years in the White House
#2-I’l take law and order over anarchy any day. Maybe you come from a third world country where violence in the streets is tolerated.
Really….Jan 6th
Well not in the streets but in our Nations CAPITOL
Peaceful Protest if we align it next to the LA Riots…
On Jan 6 2020 white people:
Broke windows in the capitol of our country and a bunch of other stuff.
Defied police.
Attacked and injured police.
Smeared the walls of the capitol with shit.
Stole things from the capitol.
Made very viable threats to kill legislators, and would have carried them out if they hadn’t been to stupid to find them.
Interfered with a valid election.
…Trump does nothing but watch
vs. What’s happening now, when brown people:
Burned and broke a bunch of crap in a crappy part of LA.
Defied police
…Trump loses his mind, sends 5k troops with live ammo.
a-hyup….
You are either stupid, insane or TDS type2. If I had been one of those capital police being beaten by those peaceful protester there would be several dead protesters.
That there wasn’t is probably because they were almost all white people.
How do the brainiacs in the Trump administration propose to deport 1 million undocumented people in a city of 4 million people? This is going to get very very ugly.
How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.
Difficulty: The elephant gets really stompy after the first bite.
– Hello, may I see your “Proof” of Citizenship Please?
> I don’t have one.
– You’re under arrest.
Seems pretty simple to me…
I would hazard the guess that the VAST majority of US born citizens can not on the spot prove their citizenship . . . in fact in the US NO official authority is even able to check citizenship easily (except maybe in the actual state where you were born) as there is no national database of citizens (in contrast to for instance Western Europe where everyone is registered). Ironically, every legal permanent resident should be able prove their status immediately as they are required to carry their ‘green card’ (can’t remember if visa holders are required to carry their passport and visum).
correct
The “pointer file” at the “SPEXS Central Site” is the national ID database created by the REAL-ID Act: a single, aggregated master list and index, held by a private contractor at a single, central site, of every driver’s license or ID card issued by any state that chooses to issue any gold-starred licenses or cards compliant with the REAL-ID Act.
Defenders of the REAL-ID Act will no doubt say that the pointer file is “just an index, not a database”. But an index file is itself a database, although a smaller one than the larger database it indexes. The only question is how large and how significant a portion of the data in each state record is included in the pointer file.
https://papersplease.org/wp/2016/02/11/how-the-real-id-act-is-creating-a-national-id-database/#:~:text=The%20%E2%80%9Cpointer%20file%E2%80%9D%20at%20the,with%20the%20REAL%2DID%20Act.
So perhaps we adopt something like a green card here? I assume, never having seen one, that it’s much like a Drivers License? Maybe we adopt for drivers, a code for this on their licenses? Must be a way this can be tightened up, but without risking chaos if it’s easily done illegally.
For now they are obviously arrested, so is there a way to prove otherwise? Hold you until they verify it perhaps? If legally here, don’t they get identification to work? Can they use that? Maybe with a code as well?
Poisoned
Trump is arresting anyone who shows up at an immigration hearing.
Anyone who applied for such a card would give their address and rounded up.
However, the idea has merit, but only in conjunction with a deal for dreamers.
I like it a lot. Criminals won’t apply and won’t get a card.
Thanks Stu
Easy, you make it so they can’t work, bank, or consume services and then they self-deport.
On a news program Monday evening, I heard something that made a lot of sense to me:
There are approximately 1 million undocumented immigrants in the LA area and 2 million in all of California. The USA as a whole has ~15 million.
Now, it takes ~750k-800k people to gain or lose a House seat. This is where illegal immigrants become a force.
Just to be clear, illegals cannot vote in Federal elections but the number of House seats a state holds depends on the the number of people living in the state at the time of the census. Each additional seat a state can wrangle brings it more political power.
Bottom line, THIS is why politicians in CA, for example, want as many people as possible and why CA tries to attract more people by offering illegal immigrants many benefits, including food stamps, housing subsidies, health insurance, etc.
If the ~2 million illegal immigrants in CA were deported prior to the next census, that could cost CA 3 House seats!
Exactly! This has been Obama’s plan for the past 4 years!
Immigrants and illegals are 2 completely different categories of people . The immigrants waited in line, went through the hoops of paying fees, doing paperwork and proving they are of good character ( like my sisters oldest who now lives in California). The illegals just show they are of bad character by jumping the border. Worse yet the illegals have caused incomes at the bottom 20% to stagnate which mostly hurts the legal migrants.
Round them up and deport nearly all illegals and increase the numbers of vetted people to fill any labour shortages. And arrest those blocking ICE as well as those employing illegals.
I live here in LA, my daughter is a federal lawyer that works in the federal building at ground zero of this mess. There were also a lot of union members down around the federal building and Trump sicked the national guard and the marines on them, not smart.. This is what happens when you surround yourself with a bunch of yes people that do not critically think nor tell Trump it would be ill-advised to do something. Been a terrible past 4 weeks for him.
SEIU is against Trump. SEIU is mostly hotel workers. Check with Teamsters.
Dozens of references to “illegal immigrants/aliens/workers/etc.” in these comments, but NOT EVEN ONE reference to “illegal employers”. Gee, I wonder why!
I would love to see some CEO’s frog-marched.
Strongly agree
I have heard people brag on this forum how they get such a good deal from hard working illegals that they can’t get from Americans. There whole life will crumble when they can no longer hire someone for fifty bucks a day.
If you are applauding Maddisen Arguijo’s conflating illegal and legal immigrants then you are promoting the mentality that is the underlying cause of the problems we have in this area. Economic fools? All of these jobs and more were being done before the inundation of illegals – in many cases probably better. How can anyone cherry pick moral positions and economic/political positions like this? On the one hand we need to make the ‘moral’ choice about the so-called Dreamers but isn’t allowing this illegal alien undercutting of wages exploitative? Is that moral for them and the citizens who have their wages undercut? Isn’t the whole idea that wages should rise such that people are willing to do the work for the right amount of pay? but I guess it’s all fine as long as we have cheap goods. So much self-contradictory stuff that I’m tired of this blog frankly.
— “Well, sandwiches are $35 in Norway because they pay their workers well. And I’ll buy an old tech Leica camera $9,000 because they pay their workers well in Germany“.
But when it comes to American workers,
— “They ask for too much! even 2 weeks vacation per year!!! they’re not competitive… bring in the migrants“.
Precise robber baron mentality. Ever wondered how come all those migrants live 10 years in the USA without papers? And did you hear the recent announcement of Mexico’s President-Elect complaining about 3.5% bank fee for fund transfers from migrants in the US to Mexico?
And then Mish talks about the “Supreme Court” and “we’re a country of laws!”. Yeah right. Crooks and first-rate hypocrites.
Read University of Hawaii (also published on the United Nations website): The Benefits of World Hunger.
I’m not kidding you. They’re not kidding either.
https://www2.hawaii.edu/~kent/BenefitsofWorldHunger.pdf
Mike of all the things that you have written, this is one I disagree with the most. Citing the WSJ and NYT is beyond silly. These pro-immigration papers are simply biased. And how does one conclude, “Going after hard-working immigrants who have been here for years is certain economic idiocy. It’ s political idiocy too, but perhaps not initially.” So, there are no criminal aliens being deported, just hard-working immigrations? How do you know that? In point of fact there are plenty of criminal aliens being deported. Talk to an ICE agent on the ground and you will find out just the type of thugs who are being deported.
“Hotels would run out of cleaning staff”
That mentality is the problem. If you pay people enough, you can get them to work any job in this country. That’s how a market economy is supposed to work.
OK, now get a bunch of employers (or even one) to say on the record that they are willing to pay more to hire US workers. Good luck!
Stop allowing kids to be on their Parents Insurance into their late 20’s. They will need to work to pay for it, and without it they will be in debt after a few visits. Nothing works better in educating young adults, than the on the ground reality.
Great, I see we have another new convert to bring all the manufacturing to the US no matter what it costs, and make sure they are all white too.
“This is how an economy is supposed to work” if it’s run by fools and bigots.
Who mentioned “white” here? I think you did. What do you mean by “white” anyway? Anyone not a PoC? What’s a PoC? Someone who is not white?Sounds like a simple and very abstract circular definition. Hard to live in those.
I’m not a bigot at all. I certainly don’t consider myself a fool. If Hilton Hotels can’t stay in business by paying market wages to legal workers, then it shouldn’t be in business. That’s my opinion.
This article indicates there was no pre-coordination for the early raids.
Gov. Gavin Newsom condemns National Guard deployment amid ICE raids, protests in LA | The Daily Chronicle
Sanctuary cities like LA have vowed not to cooperate with ICE, and many have been caught giving away “raid coordination” info to the illegal inmigrants. I’d say they threw away their right to “pre-coordination” and now reap the consequences of violating long-established Federal immigration laws.
Stop making too much sense. MAGA cult will tell you that you are a snowflake.
I agree Trump gets an F only because there is no lower grade.
On Newsom I am open to him getting an F if he had an opportunity to work with ICE on their recent raids and work on agreeable rules of engagement. I haven’t heard that was the case – what I have read is that ICE started making raids and everything blew up and escalated from there. Did they really make an attempt to coordinate with state and local governments? Asking honestly out of acknowledged ignorance on my part.
Newsom gave up his right to “an opportunity to work with ICE” by tolerating and encouraging illegal “sanctuary” policies.
He threw away any right to a seat at the “coordination table” by opposing the Federal laws which govern his state.
Parent’s of anchor babies have stolen citizenship for them by entering the US illegally and giving birth. There is precedence for arresting and convicting people in possession of stolen goods, even if they didn’t know it was stolen. Lack of enforcement only encourages people to break more laws. There is no bigotry in demanding laws be followed and enforced.
It is illegal to employ an illegal alien. Arresting and deporting persons one at a time although legal is inefficient and mostly a waste of time and very costly. Arrest and jail the employers and you can solve the issue in a short time. But politicians on both sides know without undocumented workers our economy will decline and many everyday activities like travel and simply finding fruits and vegetables in the grocery store will become burdensome if not impossible. Finding a solution ends a profitable issue for both sides so don’t look for an answer anytime soon.
If entering the US illegally is a crime to be ignored, what other crimes do you ignore and who decides? It is a crime because our elected representatives voted for it to be a crime. And reasonably so.
Very, very large numbers of illegal aliens in California are enjoying Medicaid courtesy of taxpayer across the nation. We have no say.
Significant numbers of illegal aliens are criminals in other ways in addition to breaking in. I applaud Trump for putting a priority on going after them.
It is sad that the workers get the brunt of it illegal or not.
Require E Verify for employment, and severely fine employers who hire illegals. Raise the minimum wage for illegals to $60 an hour so they don’t compete with US Citizens for jobs. Problem solved.
If states like Texas and California (two of the most populous states), don’t want to get onboard with things like e-verify then the issue will never be fixed. Never.
From the link below….
An estimated 1.3 million Texas workers, more than 8% of the state’s work force, are here illegally, according to a 2023 analysis of U.S. census data by the Pew Research Center, a nonpartisan think tank in Washington, D.C. About a quarter of all construction workers in Texas lack legal status, for example, and the industry faces a critical labor shortage as a need for housing booms. Likewise, the state’s understaffed agricultural, restaurant and elder care sectors rely on workers here illegally.
“If you got serious about applying [E-Verify], you would create even worse problems” with labor shortages, said Bill Hammond, a GOP former state lawmaker who once led the Texas Association of Business. “Do you want to go to a restaurant and use paper plates because no one will wash dishes?”
I am eager to see Trump deploy the national guard to Texas. I don’t think it’ll go the way he thinks it will. Lol.
There is no such thing as a non partisan think tank. They all have an agenda. Who do you think you are fooling. The whole concept of think tanks is stupid. This comments section is a think tank of sorts and never comes to a unified position. If a think tank is non partisan, it would never be able to take a position.
Excellent post Mish. And the irony and hypocrisy continues. In deep red Texas where Gov. Abbott made headlines shipping immigrants all over the country doesn’t want e-verify implemented in his state. Gee I wonder why?
https://www.texastribune.org/2025/06/05/texas-e-verify-requirements-immigration/
Texas’ conservative Legislature has again and again refused to mandate that most private businesses use E-Verify. Experts say that Republican resistance is rooted in how the system could impact the state’s labor supply and economy.
By definition, the bigots are just dimwitted fools that don’t understand how their food gets to their table nor do they understand the concept of a demographic death spiral where we have 74 million socialists collecting social security and growing rapidly.
But whatever, I’m moving on to where the cheap labor and high quality of life is anyway, MAGA vs WOKE can fight it out and go broke and hungry in the process.
Bigots, bigots, bigots. the rallying cry of people who want to score easy brownie points and shut down criticism. Yes. I’m a bigot – I prefer to have a first world aesthetic that values character, advancement personal responsibility and rejects corruption. So sorry for not wanting to turn the country into a banana republic. I understand perfectly how food gets to the table. I also understand that innovation is the engine of growth and added value. There’s a theory that slavery was what prevented the industrial revolution from happening 2000 years earlier than it did specifically in the Greco-Roman world. Why? Because they had such an abundance of cheap labor that the economic forces that drive innovation did not manifest – no incentive to invent machines to plant and pick when there’s no economic reason to do so. Ah whatever…I hope the hispanics burn LA to the ground.
“I prefer to have a first world aesthetic that values character, advancement personal responsibility and rejects corruption”
So you voted for Trump, giving up any claim to legitimacy.
I voted the choice that at least gave the appearance of law, order and promoted traditional notions of a functional society where the weirdos are not setting the mores of the culture.
Every single illegal needs to deported! They have supressed wages for U.S. citizens for decades that have lowered their standard of living to where many can’t make ends meet. That’s why many U.S. citizens can’t afford homes and have children. The illegals take way more than they have contributed. FAIR estimates they are taking 150+ billion per year from U.S. taxpayers and it’s increasing every year. Where is the empathy for the U.S citizens whose lives have been destroyed by the illegal invaders and make no mistake, they are invaders. Anyone that has disdain for american citizens, but is for supporting and protecting the illegals are the true bigots. They are the one’s that need to be shamed.
The only thing they are holding back by accepting a lower wage is technology development that would and will take these jobs. But here’s the rub, they also spend a lot of what they earn which goes back into our economy. What replaces them won’t.
That said, none of this justifies the extreme violence and the pure insurrectionist behavior by some Democrat party leaders, local politicians and activists. We solve our disputes in a court of law not on the streets like barbarians. This is extremely undemocratic behavior by people that lectured us on Democracy for the last two years.
Especially on lottery tickets!
This argument can also be used to oppose women in the workforce.
Woman entering the workforce in the 1970’s radically changed the economic picture and has led us to where we are today, where many families need 2 working adults to survive.
Unfortunately, less people are getting married and many households are single parent, which makes keeping one’s head above water difficult.
Be careful what you wish for, it might come true and you might not like the consequences.
OK so this is no problem.
The average total compensation for CEOs of S&P 500 companies was $17.7 million in 2023. This figure includes salary, bonuses, stock awards, and other benefits. While the average is high, individual CEO compensation can vary significantly, with some CEOs earning considerably more.
Lets say you have a decent job making $100k your CEO is making 170 times more than you for a job you and a lot of your coworkers could do just as well, guess you consider that fair.

Libertardians.
Our constitutions is kind of based nearly entirely on libertarianism, although the founders didn’t call it that.
I am an American who is a Permanent Resident of Mexico after many interviews and costly procedures. If I had walked across the border into Mexico, I would have been tossed in jail along with everyone else. I struggle to understand why these people don’t come through the front door like so many before them. A country without borders isn’t even a country anymore……
Good luck to you. My siblings inlaws are naturalized Americans from Mexico. They bought a house in Baja to retire. one day they get there and a criminal gang of squatters took the place over. It took years and cash in legal fees to finally wrest back control of their own property. The leader of the criminal gang just snagged a home next door and they had to have them as neighbors enduring their taunts and so forth. The finally sold and gave mexico the finger – they are the firs to call Mexico a corrupt, failed state.
Why ‘now’ disregard the issue that the Biden administration and Congress disregarded US law intent and the process of controlling/managing immigration and serving the American people by knowing and vetting who enters – and under controlled and effective processes?
All the recent immigrants working in LA and California and elsewhere should have been permitted as part of a smart plan….designed into law by Congress and enforced by our Executive.
Congress and the Biden administration created a problem that now needs to be resolved to the current situation in the interests of ALL the American people more than the interests of the immigrant regardless of the pain shared by all.
“We can do much through resolute enforcement of our laws….but we can do so much more through the training of our youth, both in content and in character”….T. Roosevelt
Why does this smart thinking NOT apply in the 21st century?
So I guess from your comments that as long as GDP is up and stock prices keep rising, it’s okay if migrants replace the population of largely European Americans- and not just in the workforce. How else are we going to continue our trillion dollar defense budget and keep invading and overthrowing other countries? The globalist goal and plan for their Great Reset must not be stopped. Who can object to their stated goal that even though we will own nothing, we will be happy. Soma will assure that.
It would be nice for individuals to learn that immigrants and undocumented individuals are two different classes of people. Mixing the 2 as if they were the same shows ignorance or purposely trying to make the two the same; hide the differences. and try and gain sympathy
The facts are – businesses are prohibited from hiring undocumented individuals.: Trump has the authority under Section 12406 of Title 10 of the U.S. Code to deploy the National Guard if the governor is “unable with the regular forces to execute the laws of the United States.” This last statement has plenty of evidence.
Undocumented individuals are not in compliance of the law
As you profess to want government to obey the law but I think you do this very selectively. Second, one does not break the law until a court decision renders such. Claiming an action is unconstitutional is showing limited awareness of this fact.
Businesses are prohibited from hiring undocumented individuals? Oh, that’s adorable! Bless your heart!
I been getting a bunch of reels on fb. Dems trying to debate republicans on various items of their bbb and other policies. They are refusing to debate or say anything. Imo that says two things. First their policy is unpopular with their base. Second some of these policy’s are illegal but they are gonna vote for them anyway.
If we don’t have rule of law then we really don’t have anything. Like Mish says follow the law or have them changed by your representative. And yes by following the law you might be a TACO too.
