Stocks are up this morning on news Moderna Inc’s Experimental Vaccine was 94.5% Effective.
Together with Pfizer Inc’s vaccine, which is also more than 90% effective, and pending more safety data and regulatory review, the United States could have two vaccines authorized for emergency use in December with as many as 60 million doses of vaccine available this year.
“We are going to have a vaccine that can stop COVID-19,” Moderna President Stephen Hoge said in a telephone interview.
Moderna’s interim analysis was based on 95 infections among trial participants who received either a placebo or the vaccine. Of those, only five infections occurred in those who received the vaccine, which is administered in two shots 28 days apart.
“Having more than one source of an effective vaccine will increase the global supply and, with luck, help us all to get back to something like normal sometime in 2021,” said Eleanor Riley, professor of immunology and infectious disease at the University of Edinburgh.
Moderna vs Pfizer
- Moderna expects it to be stable at normal fridge temperatures of 2 to 8 degrees Celsius (36 to 48°F) for 30 days and it can be stored for up to 6 months at -20C.
- Pfizer’s vaccine must be shipped and stored at -70C. It can be stored for up to five days at standard refrigerator temperatures or for up to 15 days in a thermal shipping box.
- Russia licensed its Sputnik-V COVID-19 vaccine for domestic use in August before it released data from large-scale trials. It said on Nov. 11 that its vaccine was 92% effective based on 20 infections in its large trial.
Side Effects
- A significant proportion of volunteers experienced severe aches and pains after taking the second dose.
- 10% who had fatigue severe enough to interfere with daily activities.
- Most of these complaints were generally short-lived, Moderna said.
“These effects are what we would expect with a vaccine that is working and inducing a good immune response,” said Peter Openshaw, professor of experimental medicine at Imperial College London.
Next year, the companies may have as many as 1 billion doses of the vaccines available, easily sufficient for the US population of about 330 million.
Congratulations to Moderna.

It sounds like the Moderna vaccine is superior. Not really because of the higher efficacy rate 95 vs 90% but because its far more stable and doesn’t require the specialized refrigeration of Pfizer’s approach. They both work by using lipids to encapsulate the RNA but it seems like Moderna’s approach is far more stable.
So both Pfizer and Moderna couldn’t have released this information 18 days ago? they waited until the excat moment Trump got the boot to release the “good news”? Come on, even if you detest Trump all this 1984 BS should have your blood boiling. It’s a Fl.u.D’etat plain and simple and everyone with an objective mind can see it for what it is/was. Trump lost a lot of Globalists a lot of money with his China tantrum and he was forced to pay the price.
No, they couldn’t. They released it as soon as the data was in. Moderna probably would have preferred to wait another week or two for more solid data, but Pfizer rushed it’s announcement out prematurely, and forced their hand.
I agree. Trump acting like a third world dictator and refusing to concede does have my blood boiling. He worked hard to lose the election, and lost it fair and square. Now he needs to make preparations for a smooth transition to his successor, as every other President in history has done.
It’s sad that people are letting their personal hatred of Trump outweigh the desire we should ALL have to NOT live in a Banana republic where elections can be stolen in plain sight and people are ok with it because their candidate is the beneficiary of the theft. It is truly depressing, especially from you are you are one of the most sane commentators on here.
I never thought I would live to see the day when a President would attempt to use the powers of his office and the legal system to steal an election, and to overturn the will of the people. Thankfully, many Republicans have been willing to stand up to Trump’s efforts to make the US into a Banana Republic. Think about it for a minute, though. The person overseeing the security of the election says the election was secure, so he gets fired. The Secretary of Defense indicates an unwillingness to use military force against the general population, so he gets fired. We live in scary times, indeed. Still, whenever a voice like Chris Krebs stands up and says the truth, even though he knows he will be fired for it, it shows that America is still strong enough to survive this.
I am especially proud of the judiciary in this whole affair. While I have faith that in times of crisis, they can act like the independent branch of government that they were intended to be, and that they can transcend politics and decide cases based on the facts and the law alone, I admit that I have had lingering doubts.
Just to be clear, I don’t hate Trump. I hate what he has done to destroy the country. Is it stronger today than four years ago? Is it more united than it was four years ago? Are we more able today to transcend partisan issues, and work for the betterment of the US? Do we have more freedom than four years ago? Are public service employees more free to work for the betterment of the US, rather than for partisan goals? I’d have to answer “no, we are much worse” to every question.
lots of non believers in shutdowns and contact tracing – if cases are not too high, it sure works. look at australia, we’ve done it here. zero new cases for last weeks in two cities of 4+ mil. almost nothing nationwide. people from US would take a shutdown as an affront on their rights, but here we have faith in our govt, and have compassion for elderly and others who will die. most people happy to comply.
Do you think you’ve eradicated the virus, the second time ever after the small pox?
You ain’t done yet. Lock-downs can slow the spread, but as soon as they are lifted, things pick up where they left off. There is no convincing argument that slowing the spread will actually decrease the area under the curve. In fact, it may well increase the Covid fatality compared to a risk-focused (sanatorium model for infirm/nursing homes with shut-in staff or sero-converted staff) approach where those with low risks (for some cohorts less than influenza deaths every year) become a fire break for the vulnerable. And that’s not even factoring the costs of lock-downs (the seen and the unseen) for decades to come.
You’ve got all of 25 million people across your whole damn country. If it weren’t for the severe punishments for refusing to comply, many people in your paradise would have certainly ignored the lockdown. Get back to us when your winter returns.
The vaccine is a moral hazard. If you take it without frequent hand washing; then returning to large crowds will leave you vulnerable to another virus. If you don’t take it, wash your hands frequently, and stay away from large crowds; then, chances are significantly reduced for contracting ANY virus.
What’s the effectiveness of vaccines in China? They have been shooting their vaccines into people for months now. Should be plenty of data shared with the WHO by now, no?
China Is Inoculating Thousands With Unapproved COVID-19 Vaccines. Why?
November 12, 2020
Mish perhaps you can track this down – were those in the test still wearing masks and social distancing or were they going about life pre-covid style? I don’t know how anyone can claim the vaccine is 95% effecdtive if you have a variable like mask wearing and social distancing in play.
It’s really just manipulated numbers meant to keep the stock markets elevated and the company stocks high so that the investors can make some big coin.
Lawrence, they inoculate and intro the virus later and monitor immune response.
The “double blind” aspect of a trial theoretically removes all the other variables from the equation. You assume that the behavior of the people in both groups was the same. Moderna had 95 positive coronavirus cases in the trial and 90 of them came from the control group. So vaccinated people had 94.5% less chance of becoming infected.
What is the exact value of mask wearing?
What does the science say about empirical effects?
All the headlines on vaccines are great, but premature. Nobody knows the long term efficacy of any of these drugs. Because……it simply hasn’t been long enough to know if they keep working…..for more than a short period of time.
Hopefully the will…..but we’ll just have to see.
If you still have to mask and social distance, then what is the point? I will not take the vaccine and continue my regimen of Vitamin C, D, quecertin and zinc.
I was asked why FDIC would not be needed under a 100% Gold-Backed Dollar.
I added a 6 point addendum here
If Russia has been vaccinating since August with a 92% effective vaccine then why are the case and deaths in Russia at all time highs in November? Nobody took it?
Supply-chain bottlenecks all the way. Only a few dozen thousand shots have been administered so far.
In March, Mr Musk declared that “the coronavirus pandemic is dumb.” https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/elon-musk-coronavirus-spacex-launch-covid-b1723556.html
And? Just because he caught it doesn’t make the panic over Covid-19 less dumb.
I understand he tested negative twice
2nd success? Third 3rd. Russia exists.
….another one that comes out with Trump’s truth (we ll have a vaccine very soon) right after the elections , VERY remarkable to say the least ! That being said, this one seems to be much more viable than Pfizer’s because of storage issues….but I and many people with me don’t want neither, thank you !
Is 95% effectiveness enough to stop the fear? 1 out of 20 will get the vaccine and think they’re immune, when they’re not.
flu vaccine is not 100% against the flu either. the point is if everyone takes it and its 90-95% effective that’s herd immunity wihout death
People aren’t scared of the common flu.
Perhaps they should be. ~600k people die of the flu annually worldwide and millions are hospitalized, some with months long recoveries. You didn’t know this did you? Or if you did, why didn’t it bother you like Covid-19?
Perhaps because the MSM hasn’t focused on the flu, so no one has gotten crazy scared for no good reason? Had Covid-19 been left to its own, it would have likely petered out and effectively disappeared by early 2021. And all the economic damage would not have occurred along with all the other side-effects,like increased suicides, increased homelessness, increased bankruptcies, etc.
Common flu and C 19 have similar symptoms to start with, but more morbidity and mortality with C 19!
Danger is real, fear is a choice.
Can Stupidity recognize fear?
It’s going to be dificult to get many peopletotake the vaccine
This is or the Pfizer vaccine
The vaccine, and likely most others, will require two doses to work, injections that must be given weeks apart, company protocols show. Scientists anticipate that the shots will cause enervating flu-like side effects — including sore arms, muscle aches and fever — that could last days and temporarily sideline some people from work or school. And even if a vaccine proves 90 percent effective, the rate Pfizer touted for its product, 1 in 10 recipients would still be vulnerable. That means, at least in the short term, as population-level immunity grows, people can’t stop social distancing and throw away their masks.
mRNA and adenovirus vector vaccines, which cover all the new Corona vaccines, are both novel vaccine techniques which have never been used before. The long-term side-effects and possible auto-immune or ADE involvement willy simply not be apparent until 3-5 years out.
I fully expected Morna’s vaccine to have similar results to the Pfizer one. They are both based on similar technology. I don’t recall if the Pfizer vaccine had similar side effects
It did.
Russia just reported that their vaccine success rate just went up from 92% to 96.5% effective.
Notice Fake News Mish refuses to acknowledge that fact, along with Fake News America?
