The Wall Street Journal reports U.S. Carries Out New Strikes on Iran as Tit-for-Tat Attacks Continue
American forces struck Iran on Saturday after blaming Tehran for an oil-tanker attack in the Strait of Hormuz, extending fighting around the strategic waterway into a third day and testing a fragile ceasefire.
The operation targeted Iranian communication and air-defense sites, drone-storage facilities and minelaying capabilities, the U.S. military said. It was the second wave of American attacks in as many days as the U.S. seeks to degrade Iran’s ability to target commercial shipping.
Iran’s state media said projectiles had caused explosions at the Hormuz port cities of Sirik and Bandar Lengeh and on the Persian Gulf island of Qeshm. All three sites are home to military facilities.
Earlier on Saturday, the U.S. military said an Iranian drone struck a tanker carrying 2 million barrels of crude oil near the Strait of Hormuz. The Panama-flagged Kiku was hit in the bridge, the vessel’s main command center, said the U.K. Maritime Trade Operations Center, affiliated with the Royal Navy. Bahrain also said Saturday it had come under attack from Iranian drones.
The back-and forth-attacks added to pressure on a preliminary peace deal already under stress from continued fighting in Lebanon and disagreements over nuclear inspections.
Iran has interpreted the agreement’s language as giving it power over the Strait of Hormuz, with it saying Tehran “will make arrangements using its best efforts for the safe passage of commercial vessels.” Many ships have used a U.S.-backed route through the strait that hugs its southern coast with Oman and the United Arab Emirates. The Revolutionary Guard has directed ships to instead use a path taking them through Iranian waters.
The outbreak of violence began Thursday when the U.S. said Iran struck a ship that transited the strait via a path near the coast of Oman that Tehran had warned shippers not to use. Trump called the attack a violation of the two sides’ ceasefire and ordered strikes on Iranian positions along the strait on Friday.
Despite the attacks, both Trump and Iran have showed signs of wanting to keep any fighting contained. The two sides engaged in tit-for-tat skirmishes throughout a two-month ceasefire reached in early April, but that didn’t derail efforts to sign the memorandum of understanding that aimed to reopen the strait and end the U.S. blockade on Iranian ports.
Both sides have continued to discuss the implementation of the deal. But political challenges remain, as Iran insists a final deal will allow it to collect revenue from commercial ships transiting the waterway. Iran also says it won’t surrender its nuclear program.

The US does not fall off an oil cliff because we are well supplied by our own domestic production plus 4-5 mbpd from Canada.
However we are running down our commercial reserves and SPR to try to keep prices down, and when we do hit tank bottoms, we will then see higher prices in the US.
Most other countries in the world are not as lucky and the poorest will have to deal with shortages.
The rest will deal with high prices.

Iran’s ability to fight back isn’t decimated because they spent about half a century preparing to fight this exact conflict. Their military is extremely spread out among the mountains of their country and destroying any amount of it was estimated to take a massive ground invasion supported by air and naval power.
We have done basically nothing to their core abilities, as seen by the fact that new launcher sites are built hourly and road mobile systems are pockmarked around the terrain. They’ve got a gigantic supply of drones and mines and can keep the straight closed indefinitely unless we feel like losing 50k men (army estimate as of last decade not even counting drones in) in a ground invasion that uses hundreds of thousands of troops.
It’s not even remotely possible to win this war in the reality we live in, we should just mutually agree to fight this out later and leave.

This is a scenario that the US military has been wargaming the shit out of for decades and they know that short of a massive ground invasion, there is little can be done militarily to open the Strait. And a large scale ground invasion won’t happen because:
A) The US military is much smaller today than it was back during the invasion of Iraq in 2003. There aren’t enough troops to stage an invasion in a country that is mountainous, much bigger and much more populated than Iraq was.
B) The US federal debt in 2003 was $7 trillion. Today it is almost $19 trillion. US budget deficit in 2003 was $370 billion. In 2025 it was $1.8 trillion. There is no way to finance a 2003 Iraq style invasion today. Simply not possible.
C) Even if it was possible to to amass the necessary troops and pay for it somehow, where would you put them safely pre-invasion? In any staging ground that you select, from Jordan, to Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait or UAE, the US forces and equipment amassing there would be subjected to constant, relentless Iranian missile and drone bombardment.
Never mind the fact that in the case of such invasion, Iran would basically destroy the entire infrastructure of the Gulf countries, which in the end would render the whole military effort to re-open the Strait pointless.
The JCPOA came to be in the first place because the US leadership at the time concluded that there was no viable military solution to the Iran issue, so they opted for the least terrible alternative possible. Today the military reality of the Gulf situation has not changed, but thanks to the current administration, the JCPOA is but toilet paper now and Iran will not agree to return to the status quo. The only realistic solution is a political settlement a lot less favorable to the US than the JCPOA was, which includes Iran’s ownership of the Strait.
It did not have to be this way, but the US electorate, US Supreme court and US congress trough apathy, ineptitude and sheer negligence, allowed this to happen, so now they will have to deal with the consequences.
There is no military solution to this, no matter how much the US screams and postures about it. Period.

In a world of kindling, the US has only matches.
It’s costing the US military millions in expenses for each ship that transits the strait near Oman. Costs go above $15 million if they have to intercept drones or missiles. Before the war, between 100 and 150 ships transited the strait each day. Do we really want to spend over 100 million a day to do this?
The US could try to keep this up at great expense to US taxpayers, or ship operators could pay a fee for safe passage, ranging from zero to $2 million depending on ship size and cargo.
Iran believes the MOU gives them control of the strait. And they intend to keep it, because it is better leverage than having enriched uranium, and far more profitable. I would not expect them to ever give that up. And they will strike a deal with Oman to share the strait and the fees.
Oman is also talking about fees to use their corridor as well. So it isn’t just Iran that believes the game has changed.
The longer the US stays in the region, using military to try to control the strait, the longer it will take to get the strait open again. And the more the US taxpayer will have to shell out.
You’re arguing that it’s too expensive for America to keep warships around the Persian Gulf? But those warships have to be somewhere, and they cost wherever they are. If they have the berthing and resupply facilities, I don’t see that it costs such a lot more to have them there. America paid for the Viet Nam War, with a lot of inflation admittedly. And it isn’t just “a warship”. It’s two destroyers, 100 aircraft, 15,000 personnel, drones, surveillance assets, all the fuel they consume, etc etc. Not to mention the losses we incur.

They already are. Anyone who buys oil from the Persian Gulf will pay the price regardless. Oil from the gulf will face higher insurance costs, delivery costs and transit fees. But no country will pay the US military for escorts when the alternative is cheaper.
I do not consider myself an “expert” but I have “some” knowledge in this area.
Also, according to the congressional budget office, the war has added an extra $50 billion in military spending in the first 119 days (which is likely a big underestimate ).
There is also the issue of insurance. What insurer is going to allow a ship to go through the strait if there is a possibility of Iran attacking it?
The strait is effectively shut if no ship’s insurer will allow it to transit.
Insurance rates will drop once the US leaves and ships can pass without fear of being shot at. The insurance savings will easily pay for the transit fees that Iran and Oman will charge.
Not the best situation compared to where we were before the war, but far better than where we are now.
What’s crazy to me is that the US tax payer is shelling out for other countries safe passage. Not many US ships using the strait anyway since the US isn’t getting oil from there.
More importantly pipelines to bypass this are being built and will be completed in a few years time at which point the whole point will be moot anyway.
Pipelines can be built for some of the oil, but not all of it. Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrein cannot build pipelines to bypass Hormuz. And Iraq has to build to the North.
And you can’t build pipelines for helium, fertilizer, aluminum etc.
The strait will diminish in importance, but it will still be important.
It looks to me as if Trump has succeeded, but that the Persians are trying to obscure the fact. I assume that the American navy will be able to take advantage of berthing and resupply facilities in friendly Arab ports, largely solving the problems of operating at such a great distance from home. Every time the Persians fire on some ship, they will be exposing the positions of their artillery and other facilities, and the Americans will be able to destroy them.
I hope Trump can now move on, make a deal with Russia to stop the Ukrainian war, and do something about Cuba. Then there is China to deal with….

I mean you clearly don’t understand the status quo ante. The US fifth fleet HQ has been in Bahrain for god knows how long. We had ability to service naval and air assets, as well as army bases, in the Gulf for decades. But as an Ozzie perhaps you are not paying attention to US agreements, since you basically have no naval assets to speak of so perhaps it is lost on you. Regardless, the US is not getting more access to Gulf state military facilities, and most likely the existing facility access is at risk.
So you do have facilities there. And as I understand it, the little Arab states have been making an effort to shoot back at the Persians when they are attacked. So it seems that the situation is really exactly the opposite of what you all and Mish have been trying to convey. Trump knows what he is doing after all. Considering his age and business experience, that’s not surprising.
Zerohedge has a piece today reporting how Trump’s people are finally getting around to prosecuting all the deep state operatives involved in the Russiagate scandal. I gather he is doing it just in time for the mid-term elections. That’s cold political calculation, but I hope it works. Seeing those unspeakable people convicted would be a joy in itself, but if it shows the electorate what they are really like in time for the elections, that would be better than revenge.

For all you people who are calling me a “pedophile” (Americans can’t spell, so I’ll forgive you that), there is a new piece of Zerohedge, 4.00a.m., Monday 29th June (that looks as if it must be an Australian datestamp, so you may have to correct by twelve hours or so), titled “Are The Epstein Survivors Being Exploited Yet Again?”
It seems to be an earnest first-person discussion of one fellow’s investigations of the subject. I don’t know enough detail to be able to follow it completely without spending more time on it than I can afford, but it seems to suggest that powerful forces are still exploiting this episode for political ends.
