I remember reading about someone saying that the bad U.S. government debt could become a national security issue, and I don’t think he was wrong. The problem is that soldiers think short-term, too, and any fix they may impose on the market would probably lead to worse problems down the road.
I would argue that that was the problem in the first place. The currencies should all have been devalued against gold at the end of World War Two, and if there had been competent businessmen in the cabinets, they would have been, but the soldiers were still in charge, so they decided to fudge something up rather than admit to the default. Everything that has happened since has proceeded from that mistake.
