The average age of MSNBC viewers is 70. They voted for Harris.
New Media Is Leaving the Old Guard Behind
Podcasts are exploding, TikTok is a news source, and traditional media is shrinking in reach and influence.
Please consider the Wall Street Journal report Trump’s Win Cemented It: New Media Is Leaving the Old Guard Behind
Two weeks ago, Donald Trump sat down with the podcaster Joe Rogan for three hours, an episode that drew more than 45 million views on YouTube and over 25 million listens across Spotify and other platforms. On election night, Rogan was among several podcast hosts who got shout-outs in Trump’s victory celebration.
It underscored what the 2024 presidential race made clear: A new media landscape has emerged. The traditional gatekeepers of political discourse—TV networks and newspapers—are shrinking in influence as Americans turn to many more outlets for information.
The percentage of people listening to podcasts in a given month has more than tripled in a decade. In the social-media realm, more than half of TikTok’s users say they regularly get news on the platform, according to the Pew Research Center. Elon Musk’s takeover of X has had a major impact, with political content, especially right-leaning posts, blanketing new users’ feeds.
The main three cable channels were down 32% in viewership collectively compared with 2020, to around 21 million, with CNN losing almost half its audience.
Some 47% of people in the U.S. have listened to a podcast in the past month, including nearly 60% of people who are under 35, according to Edison Research. And 54% of podcast listeners say getting news or political analysis is an important benefit of the medium, according to the industry advisory and data tracker Sounds Profitable. [Mish Note: This is the key age group, not 30 and under. I explain why below].
Cable news viewership overall is down from its recent peaks during Covid. Fox News is the leader, averaging 2.7 million prime-time viewers in October; MSNBC is second, with 1.3 million; and CNN, which has had the steepest drop-off in recent years, is averaging 792,000.
Question and Answer of the Day
Commentators on CNN and MSNBC routinely said Trump was a threat to democracy and played up criticism from those, including his onetime chief of staff, who said he would rule like a dictator. One question is how many persuadable people were listening.
Answer – No One

Any regular viewers of any of those networks to the exclusion of others, already had their minds made up.
Advertising money on those outlets was thus a total waste of money.
Did anyone see Rachel Maddow’s meltdown? I didn’t but I am sure there was one. Someone please post a clip.
I suspect it is highly entertaining.
Key Election Age Group

The key age group in the election is not 30 and under but a slightly larger 35 and under. The above chart explains why.
Why Trump Won the Election in One Clear Picture

For discussion, please see Why Trump Won the Election in One Clear Picture
There is massive Democrat soul searching today. Hardly anyone will get it right. This is despite huge evidence all year long.
The Brookings Institute Wonders Why Consumer Sentiment is So Bad, I Can Help
On November 5, I wrote The Brookings Institute Wonders Why Consumer Sentiment is So Bad, I Can Help
Please check it out. I posted ten charts and dozens or reasons why consumer sentiment is bad.
Brookings doesn’t know and called it a paradox. Now, like Silver, they are probably wondering why Trump won.
Harris preached about the environment to major groups of people who are struggling to put rent on the table and are worried about being evicted.
It’s hard to be worried about a rise of 1 degree, 50 years from now, when you are damn worried about being evicted or putting food on the table today.
I am proud of my analysis and I stuck with it from February through November.
It’s the Media!
If you seek an alternate explanation, I can help.
Please note Harvard Professor Says People Are Better Off Than They Think, Blames Media for Harris Loss
In the totally clueless department Jason Furman, a Harvard professor and Chair of Obama’s CEA lectures people on how well off they are.
Jason, by any chance are you getting your news from The View and MSNBC?

There are still a lot of old folks who just sit and vegetate in front of a TV. I never had the patience to sit through all that miserable dreck. Now I’m old and still can’t do it.
If there was a difference in campaigns that made all difference it was due to underlying philosophy about what makes voters vote.
Dems as usual believe they are superior intellects so view themselves and the State they attempt to impose upon everyone else, as leading vanguards of some new age.
They are the chosen ones and only they can lead so the common folks better dam well listen and do what you are told.
With a philosophy like this all the Dems need do is outspend the opponent cause dems are righteous and perfect and most of all better then anyone else. The Machine knows all, run any trash and it will succeed, cause we are the State and the State is everything.
Trump and I use his name instead of GOP, is head of a party not a machine. He is a good organizer and brought that philosophy with a message. Do you as an American find yourself better off or worse off since I left office?
Do you still believe in yourself enough that given a chance to better your Lot in this Life you would reach for the stars.?
If your answers are Yes then I can fix what Biden Harris broke and you can think Big again as a citizen of your Country.
Trump is viewed by his supporters as a Liberator and now his Job is to get the oppressive State Boot off the necks of the free citizens who live in this country.
“Trump is viewed by his supporters as a Liberator and now his Job is to get the oppressive State Boot off the necks of the free citizens who live in this country.”
As Mish pointed out: It’s about prices. Mainly rent. Since that is paid by workers and businesses at every step of production and distribution, hence drives up prices at every step.
Rent is high for two reasons:
1) “the oppressive State Boot” ON “the necks of the free citizens who live in this country” and who would otherwise build more space, hence increasing supply hence driving prices down. Supply and demand, despite this seemingly being diffimecult to comprehend for some, is not just some random slogan to go along with one’s Adam Smith tie as one lines up outside the Fed Welfare office for another fat debasement check stolen from superior people. Instead: If your boot is on the necks of otherwise free people who would otherwise build more space, you ARE the problem of excessive costs, hence prices.
2) Enormous wealth transfer to arbitrary “asset owners”, by way of Fed debasement driven redistribution their way. Redistribution FROM typical renters, who have to work for a living, producing something in competition with less burdened, freer people in such comparatively libertarian utopias as Communist China. And redistribution TO typical “landlords” (as well as others sitting on their rear producing nothing whatsoever at competitive, hence value adding, prices; who instead simply live off either doing nothing at all, or at best/worst destructive makework, while The Fed hands them the fruits of superior being’s labor.
That’s it. Rent is far,far and away the only thing which matters. If Trump wants to “get the oppressive State Boot off the necks of the free citizens who live in this country” in any meaningful way at all; changes resulting in ridding America of the two singularly destructive scourges above are the only possible options. Which one, and how, do you think Trump will successfully get rid off, or at least massively curtail? The Fed? Or arbitrary prohibitions on the basic freedom to build whatever one wants on one’s own darned property?
Personally; sorry if I’m underestimating the Orange guy (assuming that is even possible); my guess is neither. I don’t expect neither he, nor anyone else intellectually barren enough to travel in his below-the-floorboard-wrt-brains circle, are even capable of recognizing any of it. Hence instead continuing he same old nonsense as in all previous years since ’71. And since the ’30s in Argentina. And therefore; channeling Einstein…..; continuing to obtain exactly the same results as everyone else since ’71. Aka nothing. Just more of the same old decay. Which is now all that is left in America, both North and South.
I used to have a construction company. When happening to come across someone with innate ambition to better themself, the simplest policy was to give that Horse a chance to run.
Giving an unexpected raise even a small one, would get answered by Hey Boss what else can I do. With that kind of person never was there any foot dragging, just Hustle.
Getting wet blanket government personal out of the way will go a Looong way towards incentivizing those with nascent get up and go, to get up and Roar.
That in turn will take a Big bite out of inflation pressures.
The dems know it all. They preach moraly to those with inferior intellect. They herd together, attacking the garbage people, building a bubble that deflated in Nov.
One of my favorite scenes from Lawrence of Arabia.

i read somewhere a working man voting republican is the equivalent of a chicken voting for colonel Sanches.
Never heard of Colonel Sanchez. Is he like the Irish Wolfhound that is bred to kill wolves?
Trump 2016 win was because of Twitter and the left thinking that he can’t win.
2020- Stolen from trump.
2024 was won also because of Twitter + Podcasts
Boy is there going to be buyers remorse when the deficit, inflation and interest rates take off.
It will be blamed on the Democrats, the immigrants, or the Jews. There is no logic with these people.
Where have you been the last 4 years ? They took off then .
Most of Trump’s supporters voted for him because they believed him when he said that he will reduce all of these. And as Mish has pointed out, that is highly unlikely to happen.
Did you vote for that Orvill Redenbacker guy in 1980 or the Guy With The Big Ears And Funny Voice In 1992 and 1996? That’s what they were talking about. No escape from y = e to the power of x. Hockey stick thingy.
I got readers remorse when I read your comment.
US lacks the planes to win an air war with China https://asiatimes.com/2024/11/us-lacks-the-planes-to-win-an-air-war-with-china/
Wrong. Today the US can launch accurate and smaller ballistic missiles, immune from jamming and AAA, from F-15, F-16, F-18, F-35, B-1, B-2…subs with bunker busting heads or anti ship capabilities… beyond Chinese radar range, from any location, and sink the Chinese fleet, peeling them one by one in Taiwan strait, until they turn back and leak their wounds. A modern air superiority with a combination of planes AND ballistic missiles, in repetitions, that protect pilots and preserve planes. The US and friend can stop the stoic Shi aggression.
Or buy Doc Brown’s used DeLorean and turn the clock back to 1990 and dispose of CONgress at and since that time.
The Chinese have the super-performing knock-offs of excellent Russian equipment which have made their proofs in Ukraine which is why Russia conquered Ukraine in three days.
The US have sinkable and unsinkable aircraft carriers that can degrade the Chinese navy, air bases, air defense and its economy, in a chinese theater, achieving air superiority.
Where are all these planes going to launch from? China is only 80ish miles across the water. Won’t take more than 3-4 hours time to get there.
Most of those planes you list will have to launch from Hawaii at the closest. By the time they arrive the Chinese will already be on the beaches. Any US carrier fleet that moves to intervene would be sunk in an instant by missiles launched from China because fleet air defenses are designed to stop a small number of missiles, not hundreds or thousands launched from shore of a major power.
Also don’t forget those planes have only a handful of missiles each so after they fire their handful, they then have to fly all the way back home to refuel and rearm (assuming they are not then shot down by Chinese fighters since they themselves will be out of armaments) . So what’s the plan if China launches with say 500-1000 boats (not all military, they just need any board to transport troops)?
100 planes x 4 ballistic missiles/each can hit 400 targets in repetitions, day and night. China is x6 larger than Iran. The Israeli air force degraded Iran, possibly launching their attacks from H-2, a US base, which was built for RAF 84 squadron in 1935 to protected Mosul/Haifa pipeline. The US can reach China from any direction, which is hard to predict. Ballistic missiles launched from the ground are more vulnerable.
100 planes makes a lot of targets in the sky.
Why do people constantly think modern fighters can land, fuel and take off endlessly over and over like some video game. They need maintenance after every flight and a lot of it.
The F35 needs 4 hrs of maintenance per hr of flight time. So if the aircraft is in flight for say 3 hrs (1 hr there, 1 hr fighting, 1 hr back) it then needs 12 hrs before it can fly again. Most of these would be lucky to fly twice before being useless.
https://www.nextbigfuture.com/2023/10/revealing-the-maintenance-nightmare-of-stealth-fighters.htm
The US knows it can’t defend Taiwan unless it’s willing to go nuclear.
That’s what the Israeli air force is doing.
Biden’s legacy : deflating the spineless Obama and Chuck. Expanding and beefing up NATO to its max. Beating Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran with a partner that he hates and reducing Qatar, a war criminal. In the next 60 days Biden might sign a ceasefire with Lebanon.
Yes and no. He supported Israel’s fight but doesn’t want them to complete the task of destroying Hamas and Hezbollah. He didn’t beef up Nato at all and Qatar expelling Hamas has more to do with Trump being elected than with whatever Biden did. In all Biden’s legacy has been pretty negative. I am trying to think of where his impact has been positive but I fail to find any. Do you have an idea?
That’s true.
Leaving Afghanistan was a positive even if the leaving part itself was a disaster.
Maddow’s reaction when she realized Trump was winning his 1st election was wonderful, but I didn’t see this one.
The dems loss was Biden’s payback. He tumbled down with the his party, the traditional newspapers and the tv networks, which are the dems gatekeepers. This regime change boomeranged on the dems party top leaders. They attacked the wrong guy (again). It will take a decade/decades until new leaders will emerge.
Merrick Garland already switched sides fearing Trump.
Garland switched sides when he was appointed.
He can change his name again, too.
Harris lost because people didn’t like her message. It wasn’t because she didn’t spend enough money or that she avoided interviews she couldn’t control. Some Democrats keep saying that the problem is that they failed to sufficiently explain their positions to the public and that if they change the format and spend more money the public would come over to their side. It never comes into their minds that maybe the public doesn’t like their ideas because if they recognize this then their whole worldview would come tumbling down.
John Fetterman during Joe Roan’s podcast said that you can’t tell people that what they are seeing with their own eyes is wrong and expect to be believed. He is right. It is not the messenger they don’t like. It’s the message. That’s why they lost.
When u dislike a person u don’t listen to his “massage”.
Unless forced like in the old USSR, China and generally places where you don’t have free speech.
When u don’t have free speech u lean on god, family and community.
Remind me which side encourages children, family and community to report unauthorized speech and thought to the authorities?
If the average age of their viewer is 70 then at least 5% are dying each year. By the time the 2028 election rolls around probably a quarter or a third of their viewers are dead. If Trump, the Supremes and the public push for a cleanup of voter rolls the Dems will no longer be able to get the dead voting.
I expect that by 2030 most of the MSM will be gone. Merged, bankrupt or reduced to some niche podcast.
It’s simply easier and more discreet to read a website on your phone whilst waiting for something than to play a video or watch TV.
TV, radio, and physical media doesn’t matter.
This is the information revolution coming for the MSM. They might make a lot of noise about it, but almost no-one is listening to them.
I READ online news and blogs because it’s much faster than listening to podcasts or watching videos.
Much appreciate your analysis Mish! You are honest and call it like it is, no BS which I appreciate!

Knock around a little and you’ll probably find studies showing exactly opposite indications.
b-b-b-but Oprah, Diddy and The Avengers told me Trump was going to take kids away from their parents and make men wear ladies underwear.
You do realize that the Avengers wear costumes that closely approximate ladies undergarments and that Diddy and Oprah are anything but paragons of virtue when it comes to ethics or parental values?
Well maybe here is the place Mish to thank you for your analysis and news channel. I really appreciate you looking at such a diversity of issues and it speaks well that your take on the election was spot on. I always enjoy getting your notifications.

That’s my fear — Trump won’t give up power (except to his kids; maybe JD) … he’s headed for jail the minute he steps out of the WH.

Internal messages obtained by The Daily Wire show a FEMA official ordered relief workers in Florida not to help houses with Trump signs. Anybody surprised?
nice!
Am I surprised – No; am I supervised they got caught – kind of.
No doubt people argue:
1) NOT TRUE – DW is a rag;
2) ok, true but ISOLATED;
3) ok, true, not isolated, but DOESNT MATTER (mostly b/c Trump supporters are prepared — don’t need FEMA handouts).

naw … still a mish-mash jumbled word salad … D’s come back in 12 years.
The new media is interactive, not top down reporting. It auto links events, or users post links.
They don’t need Bloomberg, or Reuters BS stories when they can post pictures and videos directly where events are happening.
“Commentators on CNN and MSNBC routinely said Trump was a threat to democracy”.
The voters decided that the ‘democracy’ of Democrat party rule wasn’t working for them. The verdict was loud and clear.
Now that we have at least one Supreme Court justice that cannot define a “woman”; next question is define a “democracy” … bonus points if you use the word “disinformation”

Great observations. While Harris wasted millions paying outside groups to knock on doors, Team Trump used the outside groups to drive registration and developed an incredible social media and podcast strategy. Brilliantly conceived, designed and implemented.
I get all my news from websites and podcasts. I refuse to use tiktok. or instagram. or facebook. or google. though regrettably i watch a lot of youtube since thats where most of the podcasts are. Google/Youtube is the most evil company on planet earth
I even have my 84 year old father wanting to watch more podcasts than cable news now
For me it was the lies during the plandemic and the utterly insane lies and propaganda surrounding the US war on Russia using the Ukraine proxy that led me to now watch zero television of any kind. and i am in one of the older age groups
Why do you think the podcast people aren’t lying to you?
I assume everyone I watch/read has an agenda of some kinda. I take what info I find valuable and leave the rest.
Clicks and eyeballs.
Media and consumerism go hand in hand, whether a blog, podcast, or some infotainment on television.
I suggest trying Rumble. You can see a lot of the same podcasts on Rumble as you do YouTube. You can also fast-forward through commercials if not watching live. I don’t know who you like to watch, but a lot of conservatives like Tucker Carlson, Bill O’Reilly and Dan Bongino, have Podcasts. I just found out yesterday. Megan and Kelly has a podcast on Sirius that can also be watched on Rumble. Can’t beat free and no commercials.
cool … hadn’t signed up but given your highly-partisan, but uncompensated recommendation, I’ll do it!
They allow EVERYONE to post podcasts on Rumble including far left progressives. They believe in free speech for everyone.
Let me help you neoliberal fascist. Replace “Highly-partisan” with “uncensored”, i.e., non-partisan. Imbecile.
The Iraq war should have been the watershed.
It took two years for the scammy MSM to report that there was s full scale insurgency, and the body bags couldn’t be hidden any more.
