Trump Wants Role in Picking Iran’s Next Leader. Questions Abound

OK, how is this supposed to work?

Trump Says He Must Be Involved

Axios reports Trump says he must be involved in picking Iran’s next leader

  • For several days, the Iranian regime has postponed the announcement of the new supreme leader. But statements by Iranian politicians on Thursday suggested an announcement could be imminent.
  • He added that he refuses to accept a new Iranian leader who would continue Khamenei’s policies, which he said would force the U.S. back to war “in five years.”
  • “Khamenei’s son is unacceptable to me. We want someone that will bring harmony and peace to Iran,” Trump said.
  • Asked Tuesday who could replace Khamenei, Trump told reporters at the White House: “Most of the people we had in mind are dead.”

Congratulating on killing all of the people who you may have approved.

Reuters reports Trump tells Reuters US must have a role in choosing Iran’s next leader

U.S. President Donald Trump told Reuters on Thursday the United States must be involved in choosing the next leader of Iran and said it would be “wonderful” if Iranian Kurdish forces based in Iraq were to cross into Iran to launch attacks on security forces there.

Trump said in a ‌telephone interview that he thinks the next leader of Iran is unlikely to be the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s son, who has emerged as a frontrunner to succeed his father, who was killed in a military strike at the start of the war.

“We’re going to have to choose that person along with Iran. We’re going to have to choose that person,” Trump said.

Trump also encouraged Iranian Kurdish forces to go on the offensive, speaking six days after the U.S. and Israel launched attacks on Iran on Saturday. The conflict has killed more than 1,000 people, including at least six U.S. service members, and caused damage and instability throughout the Middle East.

“I think it’s wonderful that they want to do that, I’d be all for it,” the president said.

“We want to be involved in the process of choosing the person who is going to lead Iran into the future, so we don’t have to go back every five years and do this again and again. We want somebody that’s going to be great for the people, great for the country,” Trump said.

He did not elaborate after saying that Khamenei’s son Mojtaba, who has emerged as a frontrunner to succeed him, was an unlikely choice.

Asked whether exiled Iranian Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi, the son of the last shah, was a possibility, Trump said, “I think everybody’s in the mix. It’s very early.”

Open to Kurdish Intervention

When asked if the U.S. would provide or had offered air cover for Iranian Kurdish forces who are considering an intervention in western Iran, Trump responded, “I can’t tell you that,” but added that ‌the objective for the Kurds would be “to win.”
“If they’re going to do that, that’s good,” Trump added.

Kurdish Response

Might I Propose an Election?

Might I propose an election instead of the US mandating leaders of foreign countries.

And as for the Kurds, understand that Trump is sponsoring a civil war.

The Kurds have no chance of winning anything but local skirmishes unless Trump puts US troops on the ground.

I fail to see how Trump can dictate who the next leader is without putting troops on the ground or endless bombing to enforce it.

Rising Gasoline Prices

Trump said he was not concerned about rising gasoline prices. “They’ll drop very rapidly when this is over. And if they rise, they rise. But this is far more important than having gasoline prices go up a little bit,” he said.

Might I suggest that the American people are more interested in gasoline prices and energy-related inflation than nation building in Iran at a huge inflationary cost.

Trump says prices will come back down. OK when?

Lots has happened today in the energy markets. I will have an update shortly.

The word “Supreme Leader” is just an Anglo-Israeli propaganda term. The Iranian military is controlled by the President of Iran, an elected position. Funding for the government is controlled by the legislature, again elected positions. The top Ayatollah is more like the Pope. Very influential, especially on religious issues, but hardly the Supreme Leader. Choosing a new Pope changes nothing.

Yes. Good comment.
Iran is a democratic socialist Islamic Republic.

The Velâyat-e Faqih is guardianship over Islamic (legal) principles, entrusted to a legal scholar. He answers to the supreme council who nominates him and he can be disposed. He has a narrow constrained role, nothing to do with everyday government. In Khamenei’s case of of the last stalwarts opposed to acquiring nukes or WMDs as unislamic. But there is leeway for reinterpretation of the fatwah to adjust to new circumstances, e.g., Jihad against the great Satan prowling the earth like a wild beast.

People unfortunately know very little about how the Republic is organized, its institutions, its checks & balances, and particularly the many ways it is integrated with the population.

America has largely lost its moorings in terms of a constitutional Republic and the rule of law, succumbing to factionalism, the leader’s cult of personality, and rampant political weaponization of all institutions and political capture of civic cadres.

I fail to see how you think that Trump would be able to dictate who the next leader would be by putting troops on the ground or endless bombing. Unlike other countries invaded by the US since Colonial War II, Iran can and does shoot back. Any Usonian troops will be killed and bombers shot down by Iran.

Well in 5 more weeks he can start standing down as the 60 day window of operations draws ever closer passing the buck to AIPAC, Congress & Senate or a NATO member to invoke article 5.

The US sponsors elections in MANY countries around the world. Why would this be different. Election in Iran? Why waste resources on a fake election where the US ensures the winner? I don’t like it but that’s the way it works.

“sponsors”. LOL

Iran had an election less than 2 years ago. Masoud Pezeshkian won with 53.7% of the vote.

I think we should worry more about the Israelis who want to leave Israel once they’re out of interceptor missiles and Iran takes out their desalination plants with hypersonic missiles. Enough of this dual citizen bullshit. Not a one of them should be let into the US.

Whether Trump even knows it or not, this war was to destroy Iran and leave it in ruins. Like Iraq, Libya and Syria. Israel’s goal isn’t to make things better in its surrounding countries; it’s to leave them in tatters – hopefully with internal disputes, so that Israel can pursue its “Greater Israel” goal – absorbing portions of all of its neighbors – which their ambassador to the US – Mike Huckabee – has admitted.

108K got their pink slips in Jan (worse Jan since 2009 great recession) with likely a few Iranians among them – enough of a pool to find a willing leader and a whole council; looks like a good fit.

Um…..has anyone noticed, as with Ukraine, that the more horrid the situation becomes, the greater the assertions and claims become, apparently in reaction? Any day now, I expect You Tube clickbait to headline, “God Kills every Russian on Earth” or ” Evil Iranians Surrender And Beg Forgiveness”. Does ANY credible news reporting exist anywhere?

You have to watch video of the actual event to be sure of anything, and that may not work for much longer either.

The media is full of people telling you about events, but not presenting any evidence.

The Shah of Iran was installed by a coup orchestrated by the CIA back in 1953. The Shah chosen by America ended up being a brutal dictator. Now the USA 75 years later wants another chance to choose Irans next Dictator?

Trump should pick who the candidates are. Then the Iranians get to elect from whatever candidates Trump chooses. Democracy in action.

You are a perfect example why the US is in the last stages of total collapse.

Considering that I’m not American and my last nominally American ancestors died over 100 years ago then you should rethink your argument. You westerners think that anyone commenting on this war must be American. I’m interested as I’ve always been interested in world affairs, plus in the pat week 3 of the locations and 5 of the countries bombed by Iran are places I’ve been to. You really think I care if Iranian regime members get killed?
And what is this Iranian advancement you alluded to that I’m supposed to be jealous of?
And before you claim I’m Jewish I’d point out that my home is in Egypt, a country that Iranian drones have hurt both directly and economically

The US has had their ass kicked by Russia & now Iran, it’s they who’ll be picking the next US leader not vice versa. The Grifter in Cheif can’t control his own bowls let alone countries. The US has been drop kicked out of the Middle East by force. The US is collapsing & dying a slow painful death.

Trump’s most important selection will be who should he appoint to represent him in defending impeachment proceedings. We will NOT win this stupid war on Iran. This will be in several months from now. By that time the incompetent Pam Bondi will have been removed as AG. Since she previously represented Trump in civil suits filed against him, she will likely be at the top of the list. maybe Epstein lawyer Alan Dershowitz can join the team also. Money for legal fees is not a concern as Trump and his family have already been enriched by maybe $1.5 billon from shakedowns of foreign leaders and stupid MAGA supporters who invested in his crypto scams.

Trump said he was not concerned about rising gasoline prices.

Well Oil at $80 and rising heading to $100, god help you if you drive around in a gas guzzling F150. Lol!

People are gonna be begging for EVs soon enough. double lol!

As to how this is supposed to work, it will work out the same way Afghanistan worked out.
