Déjà Vu on China, Biden Misspeaks For a Fifth Time on Military Response

Strategic Ambiguity

The Wall Street Journal reports Biden Says U.S. Would Intervene Militarily if China Invaded Taiwan

President Biden said the U.S. would respond militarily to defend Taiwan if China tries to take it by force, sparking uncertainty over whether the U.S. was moving away from its longstanding policy of strategic ambiguity and prompting a clarification from the White House.

Mr. Biden’s comments were met with anger from Beijing and praise from Taipei. They were also part of a pattern: In August and October of last year, the president answered questions on Taiwan by suggesting a break in U.S. policy toward the democratically self-ruled island, only to have aides jump in to say nothing had changed.

In case you might think the snip is out of context, the above is a paywall free link to the article and video.

Biden Misspeaks on Taiwan

Bloomberg reports Biden Misspeaks on Taiwan, Says US Military Would Intervene

President Joe Biden said the US military would intervene to defend Taiwan in any attack from China, comments that appeared to break from the longstanding US policy of “strategic ambiguity” before they were walked back by White House officials.

Asked during a press briefing on Monday in Tokyo whether the US would be willing to get involved militarily to defend Taiwan after not doing so in Ukraine, Biden said “yes — it’s a commitment we made.”

White House officials later said that Biden simply meant the US would provide military equipment to Taiwan, not send troops to defend the island if China attacks, which would constitute a landmark shift in policy.

Since taking office, Biden has repeatedly used language about Taiwan that appeared to alter policy in place since around the time the US switched diplomatic recognition to Beijing. Last year, Biden or his aides needed to clarify his remarks on Taiwan on at least four separate occasions, including his description of the island as “independent” — China’s oft-stated red line for an invasion

Déjà Vu for a Fifth Time

Counting the four from last year, this is at least the fifth time aides had to walk back Biden statements on China.

It’s clear the President has little idea what he is saying, and it’s not just about China. This makes for a dangerous setup.

“If the US side insists on playing the Taiwan card and goes further and further down the wrong road, it will certainly lead to a dangerous situation,” said Yang Jiechi, Beijing’s top diplomat, in a warning to to National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan.

Earlier this year I proposed having aides give his speeches. But whom?

The Ideal Spokesperson

Like her or not, Jen Psaki, Biden’s former press secretary, did an amazing job at deflecting Biden’s mistakes.

And she often did so in humorous ways. Psaki would have been ideal, but she quit.

Now Biden has Karine Jean-Pierre clearly chosen for reasons other than talent.

“How does raising taxes on corporations reduce inflation?”

Peter Doocy: Biden’s “Twitter posted the other day, ‘You want to bring down inflation? Let’s make sure the wealthiest corporations pay their fair share.’ How does raising taxes on corporations reduce inflation?”

Karine Jean-Pierre: “So, are you talking about a specific tweet?”

Republicans did not like Psaki because she was very skilled at making excuses for Biden.

Like her or not, Psaki did an excellent job at what she was hired to do. In contrast, Karine Jean-Pierre is clueless.

Reading From a Script

Hello Alexa Where Are You

“Here’s something I found on the internet. Biden says ….”

Pentagon Spokesman John Kirby to the Rescue

As CNN reported, Kirby had been under consideration to replace Jen Psaki as White House press secretary, but the role ultimately went to Jean-Pierre.

If America can’t get NATO to join them in a war with Russia (like they did with Libya) maybe they can get a war with China over Taiwan.

CNN (CIA News Network) ran an editorial today about Biden’s Taiwan gaffe being unacceptable. CNN was quite the fan of Biden up until a year ago, but their tone has changed where now they want to see him out of office. But replaced with who? Kamala won’t cut it. Does the CIA have a groomed candidate available like they had with Obama? Why yes, Mayor Pete.

I think the plan is to push Biden out before the mid terms. If he doesn’t go along, Hunter goes to jail. They got Manafort for not filling out a foreign agent form for his activities in Ukraine. Pretty sure people who smoke crack with hookers aren’t dotting all their I’s and crossing their T’s.

We are far less likely to prevail in the South China Sea than is Ukraine in the Donbas.
We are outmanned: 80% of Chinese are willing (many eager) to fight for their country, and Taiwan is China. Barely 60% of us are willing to fight for the US, according to WVS.
We are outbuilt by the world’s largest manufacturing economy which, inter alia, commissions a new warship and graduates 1000 engineers every six weeks.
We are outgunned by the world’s biggest, best armed navy. PLAN missiles outrange ours by 50%=150% because we won’t spend money on real R&D.
For more on the PLAN and Taiwan, read https://godfree.substack.com/p/taking-taiwan?s=w.
Since that article was published, China launched the first naval surveillance satellite with onboard AI, ensure that its ASBMs’ targeting information comes from three independent sources.
We are living in a fool’s paradise or, as Vladimir Putin says, an empire of lies.

Biden has been the greatest president ever. He hasn’t accomplished a single thing and that’s good.
And I don’t think Biden has misspoken, if China invades Taiwan then the US economy collapses. no more microchips for computers, cars, jet fighters, refineries, dams, and anything else that runs on electricity.
The US is very dependent on Taiwan and it will take decades to build that supply chain back in the US or elsewhere. I guess that’s why there is a mad rush to get Vietnam up and running.

I didn’t like Psaki either but not because of her responses and management of her job which was fine. I didn’t like her hairdo. I mean it is so 1990’s undergrad style and I feel strongly that she should have changed it years ago.

The problem is that for years, Biden’s gaffs have been used as standard examples of: “Define ‘gaff‘: When a politician mistakenly tells the truth.”

Rumor has it, the Biden administration is planning to unleash the ultimate financial weapon: it presses the Nobel committee to award the Nobel prize for economics to a Chinese economist.

Nobel Prizes are awarded in the fields of Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature, and Peace.
A prize, mislabeled as “Nobel,” is annually awarded by a Swedish bank and is only administered by the Nobel Foundation. The bank calls it a “Nobel” prize in economics.

It is still better than spraying lysol or clorox into your body. What does it say about the predecessor who couldn’t beat this guy but still attempting to control the party. Sadly we would have been better off with Clinton for all parties involved. It’s not a lie if you believe it.

I have been predicting for years that hillary would finally get caught and that everything rachel maddow wished on trump would eventually befall hillary.
LOCK HER UP.
That will literally be the end of the dumbocrat party as we know it. It would be the public proof that it is the party of illegality, weaponizing the state, hate and division. Of course with Elon Musk tweeting those last 2 points, it’s a done deal. Centrist dems love Elon and they follow him. The far left is just cra cra, not worth talking to or caring about.

Nonsense. I think that that the best choice was made in both cases. Trump was better than Hillary. Biden is better than Trump. Yes, though, all three were awful. The real question is, what is wrong with the primaries such that no party can manage to nominate a candidate that wold actually make a good President. Well, I think Jo Jorgensen would have been good, so I guess the question needs to be limited to the major parties. Honestly, I’m starting to think that “Idiocracy” is a true story.

Saw the original Biden quote very early this morning and almost flipped, because I knew that wasn’t the US policy. Was it a change in policy? Or was it another gaffe (which I hoped it was)? Fortunately it was just Biden being Biden. His staff, political party and corrupt media continue to surround and protect this guy, to the detriment of more than 330 million people (plus millions more around the globe). People will be talking about the Biden era 50 years from now. It’s not going to be a fond remembrance.

Maybe it’s because he was in office only 15 months. A case can be made he never lived a healthy day in office. As far as remembering Andropov…. every Valentine’s Day a bunch of us celebrate his burial date with flowers, chocolates and vodka.

The most incompetent administration in US history and they double-down on stupid/incompetence with yet more of these ridiculous “diversity hires”.
One almost gets the impression that they are trying to fail. If so, it would be the only thing they’ve succeeded at.

The new PS was selected because she’s immune from criticism. If you criticize her you’ll be labelled a anti gay racist.
I suspect Biden’s real approval rating is in the 20s. About as low as a democrat can possibly get.
