Is Biden Bluffing or Do Democrats Have a Defendable Strategy?

From many corners, there’s intense pressure on Biden to stand down. Nate Silver suggests Biden is bluffing, perhaps in a MAD way. I disagree.

George Clooney Implores Biden to Step Aside

In a New York Times Op-Ed, George Clooney says I Love Joe Biden. But We Need a New Nominee.

I’m a lifelong Democrat; I make no apologies for that. I’m proud of what my party represents and what it stands for. As part of my participation in the democratic process and in support of my chosen candidate, I have led some of the biggest fund-raisers in my party’s history. Barack Obama in 2012. Hillary Clinton in 2016. Joe Biden in 2020. Last month I co-hosted the single largest fund-raiser supporting any Democratic candidate ever, for President Biden’s re-election. I say all of this only to express how much I believe in this process and how profound I think this moment is.

But the one battle he cannot win is the fight against time. None of us can. It’s devastating to say it, but the Joe Biden I was with three weeks ago at the fund-raiser was not the Joe “big F-ing deal” Biden of 2010. He wasn’t even the Joe Biden of 2020. He was the same man we all witnessed at the debate.

Is it fair to point these things out? It has to be. This is about age. Nothing more. But also nothing that can be reversed. We are not going to win in November with this president. On top of that, we won’t win the House, and we’re going to lose the Senate. This isn’t only my opinion; this is the opinion of every senator and Congress member and governor who I’ve spoken with in private. Every single one, irrespective of what he or she is saying publicly.

Stephanopoulos Says Biden Cannot Serve Four More Years

The Guardian reports ABC anchor caught on video saying Biden cannot serve four more years.

ABC anchor caught on video saying Biden cannot serve four more years
George Stephanopoulos, who interviewed president days ago, says he should not have answered passerby’s question

The show-business gossip site TMZ published a grainy video captured by an unidentified man walking on Fifth Avenue in New York City, who happened to encounter Stephanopoulos, apparently dressed for a workout.

The man asked: “Do you think Biden should step down? You’ve talked to him more than anybody else has lately.”

“I don’t think he can serve four more years,” Stephanopoulos responded, in what he later described as a candid moment.

Later, Stephanopoulos confirmed to TMZ that he was the person in the video, and issued a statement: “Earlier today, I responded to a question from a passerby. I shouldn’t have.”

Top House Democrat Adam Smith calls on President Joe Biden to End Candidacy

USA Today reports Top House Democrat Adam Smith calls on President Joe Biden to End Candidacy

The top Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee on Monday called on President Joe Biden to end his candidacy after his “alarming” debate performance.

The statement makes Rep. Adam Smith, D-Wash., one of the most senior Democratic lawmakers to demand that Biden leave the race and allow the party to nominate a new candidate. The strongly worded message adds to a growing chorus of concern among Democrats about Biden’s fitness for office and the need for a new candidate capable of beating former president Donald Trump.

“That candidate must be able to clearly, articulately, and strongly make his or her case to the American people,” Smith said in statement. “It is clear that President Biden is no longer able to meet this burden.”

Translation: Dear president, I beg you to stand down, but I don’t want it to look like that’s what I am saying.

Vermont Senator Calls on Biden to Drop Out

Inside the Room

  • One House Democrat supportive of Biden told me it “felt like a funeral.”
  • Rep. Jahana Hayes (D-Conn.) said that putting Harris atop the ticket would be setting her up for failure.
  • Rep. Mark Takano (D-Calif.) said he saw a poll recently that had Biden losing in his district. Biden won his district with 62% of the vote last time.

Hmm, I see an inside the room musical tribute.

In Wisconsin from Nate Silver

🕒 Last update: 12:45 p.m, Tuesday, July 9: It’s never a good idea to place too much emphasis on any one poll. But this bipartisan poll of Wisconsin for the AARP is potentially an exception, as it is probably the highest-quality poll in a swing state since the debate. It’s a bad one for Biden, showing him down 6 points. Wisconsin had been one of Biden’s better-polling states, but his chances of winning the must-win Badger State have fallen to 39 percent with the new poll added. The drip-drip-drip of polls like these could further erode Biden’s standing in our forecast.

Is Biden Bluffing?

Nate Silver has an interesting article Biden Has a Weak Hand (emphasis mine)

Democrats don’t know how to spot a bluff. … The campaign is asking voters to make a risky bet: not a choice between Trump and Biden so much as one between the Blue Mystery Box and the Red Mystery Box.

Frankly, I’d rather take 264 randomly-selected players from the World Series of Poker over the 264 current Democratic members of Congress when it comes to strategizing their way through a position like this one. That’s because politics tends to select for the exact opposite of the type of people you’d want in this situation. Instead of rewarding clear-headed, independent-minded thinking under pressure, politics is a “game” where you get ahead by being a risk-averse people-pleaser, drinking the Kool-Aid rather than being the turd in the punchbowl.

Biden is probably bluffing — and if he’s not, Democrats have the nuclear option. We’re basically at the end of the steps that allow Biden to move aside gracefully. Steps beyond this plausibly could damage Biden irreparably — but that doesn’t matter if he’s already irreparably damaged or he’s not going to be the nominee anyway because at some point the escalation will work. In MAD terms, Democrats potentially have first strike capabilities. If they can damage Biden to the point where his chances of winning are not merely low but essentially zero, he loses his leverage.

I’ll conclude with this: even if the tactics and strategy are hard to work out, it can’t possibly be a good idea to nominate someone in Biden’s condition to another four years in office. It just can’t be. If you think it is, try again because you did the math wrong. It’s not a sales pitch Democrats can make with a straight face, and voters aren’t buying it.

Their best argument, of course, is “well, Trump is worse” — but that doesn’t answer the question of why Democrats were in a position to offer voters an acceptable choice and didn’t exercise it. When in doubt, make the responsible move. And don’t try to run a bluff when you so obviously don’t have the goods.

A Bluff or a Strategy?

Does Biden understand what he is doing?

Is it possible he has no idea what he is doing other than what his handlers tell him?

Is it possible Biden’s handlers know exactly what they are doing?

The last question is the key one. And there is a very plausible explanation for Biden not to voluntarily stand down now.

If Biden can hang on until the DNC makes it official, Democrats can avoid a messy open convention.

How Long Before Biden Drops Out or Is Forced Out of the Election?

On July 8, I asked How Long Before Biden Drops Out or Is Forced Out of the Election?

The DNC meets on July 21. The date was set for practical reasons. Ohio had a requirement that the nominee be set by August 7 but that has been resolved.

Although there is no longer a need to settle things early, the DNC is still meeting on July 21.

I made these comments, but the Ohio issue is no longer applicable so strike those references.

The sooner Democrats can dump him the better, with one important exception. The DNC wants to control the process rather than have an open convention free-for-all.

Look for an official nomination announcement on July 21, 22, or 23. My guess is Biden becomes the official nominee on July 22, two weeks from today.

Then sometime before the convention, look for Biden to “voluntarily” quit (perhaps told to quit or else face the 25th amendment) sometime between July 22 and Ohio’s August 7 deadline.

As long as I am going out on a limb, let’s go further. Look for Biden to be off the ticket sometime between August 1-5, replaced by Kamala Harris.

If Biden released his delegates now we would have an open convention. If Biden did not release the delegates they would be obligated to him for one round except for the in “good conscience” rule.

Everyone is screaming their fool heads off for Biden to step down but that risks an open convention or at a minimum messy explanations why there is no open convention.

The DNC does not want an open convention. And the way to ensure there is no open convention is for Biden to hang on long enough for the DNC to make Biden/Harris the official nominees.

So rather than this being a bluff, hanging on can easily be a strategy. And it can be a strategy whether or not Biden is even away of the strategy.

It’s a plausible theory.

Might I suggest it’s more plausible than the assumption that none of Biden’s handlers know what they are doing and don’t care what the polls or anyone else says?

But please note my theory could be correct even if Biden drops out early. Plans can blow up.

If the live convention comes and goes with Biden still on the ticket, then my theory is wrong.

What happens if the DNC follows through with the virtual vote and confirms Biden/Harris as nominees, and then Biden drops out. Can someone who knows DNC rules answer these questions:

  1. Is Harris automatically elevated to be the Presidential nominee?
  2. Could Harris then release her delegates (e.g. polls confirm she can’t win), so as to allow an open Convention?
  3. Could delegates defy the DNC, take over the process, and open up the convention anyway?

In short, do the delegates have ultimate authority over DNC “rules?”

Could Harris generate the requisite excitement at the Convention? Or would she be the Hubert Humphrey of 2024, leading a divided party?

The bottom line for Democrats must ultimately be pragmatic: can Kamala beat Trump? I think not, for all kinds of reasons.

The DNC “machine” wants “order”, but order” and Democratic process are contradictions, yes? I would much prefer an “Open” Convention. That might actually deliver fresh faces unencumbered by the Biden-Harris baggage. A process dominated by DNC insiders is exactly opposite to what the Democrats SAY they stand for, and voters will see through that.

All this talk about how bad Brandon was at the debate! He’s President RIGHT NOW and will be so for another six months. He’s totally gone and the country is running itself. What’s another four years of care-taker cabal rule? Anthony Blinken is the Secretary of State and therefore head of the President’s cabinet. He’s calling the shots. The military’s doing its thing. The secret security & intelligence states-within-a-state are doing their’s (like they’ve done for the past 60 years). Treasury’s doing whatever Grandma Yellen says. Everything’s FIIIIIIINE. Last thing America needs is some kind of Trump to come along and ruin everything. Geez.

This is why there is an electoral college. It is the Basis of the Union formation.
That there will be attempts by large population states to dominate the Nation was true going back to the foundations of America.
To bring less populated states in and have assurances they would keep their statehood
intact electoral college was how elections got decided.
This is a republic not straight popular vote.

May not be as much of an issue as first thought, at least for *this* election. The only states angling to allow illegals to vote are solidly blue states that would be won by team-blue anyway. Their electoral votes were never going to team-red to start with.

Too bad America doesn’t have Primary elections where issues like this could be addressed and registered democrat voters would have other candidates they could vote for.

Oh, wait…Never mind.

Remember Dean Phillips? He was a pretty good candidate and wanted to challenge Biden. Long story short he withdrew within a few months and announced he is retiring from congress.

Once again the DNC chose their candidate in a cigar smoke filled back room and once again the Media let them get away with it.

Except this time around it looks like it’s about to blow up in their face.

In the Summer Of Love 2020 / Chicago Style they bused in Antifa shock troops from Madison and Milwaukee Wisconsin. There were various muster locations just outside the city, including Riemer Park in Palatine. From these locations before sunset they were shuttled in just outside the Loop, including the ‘tour buses’ parked along Clinton and Canal streets just sw of Union Station. They were attired in mostly black, including masks, with black Doc Martens and had ‘university geology class’’ pointy rock hammers to break windows. This time I expect them to show up looking like the beige pants guys with the American flag masks popping out of the back of u haul trucks. Corrected: “The DNC wants to control the MONEY rather than have an open convention free-for-all….where they fight over who gets HOW MUCH and WHO CONTROLS that $100 Million of Campaign funds.”

CLEARLY, they do not want Kamala getting hold of it. So, it is as simple as “Getting DIBS.” That is a lot of Money, Jill “MONEY BAGS” Biden also wants to make sure Joe understands that THEY should get or retain a cut of the loot.

There is a FOOD FIGHT going on and it is ALL GREEN. This is the GREEN REVOLUTION……MONEY is how we should look at this.

It’s a war… where’s the war?

Riddle me this…

Russia continues to supply gas to the EU and the NATO countries that are supposedly fuelling the Ukrainian war effort. Surely all that Putin would have to do to get his way would be to throttle back the gas supply for a week or two and drive prices through the roof. This would without a doubt trigger mass protests across the EU as inflation would rip higher forcing NATO to abandon their coked-up front man, Zelensky. But nope, they are in discussions to renew their contract with Gazprom.

The “good conscience” rule allows delegates to vote according to their conscience rather than being strictly bound to their pledged candidate. It was voted in 1982 and it does offer a way to remove Biden during the Democrat Convention. To use that rule to eliminate Biden from the ticket, there should be a ready candidate or candidates waiting in the wings to step in seamlessly. It has to be someone most delegates could vote for in order to avoid chaos in the Convention.

I don’t think this is a viable option.

Elaine Kamarck, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and an expert in the party’s nominating process, as a longtime member of the Democratic National Committee’s Rules and Bylaws Committee, said: “You would need a strong and persuasive alternative to Biden, and right now there isn’t one,” she added.

She is absolutely right that there isn’t one! Without a very strong, and polling strongly as well, candidate, there is no way the delegates will risk there reputations and word they gave to the sitting President, There Party, and for what they would have to answer for, and explain forever, if not pushed out of the Party all together, if it didn’t work, which it wouldn’t at this point IMO.

It’s not even the fallout from the reversal, but financially nothing is gained either, which adds more fuel to the fire heading their way if they did so. They would have a new candidate with no money. I doubt the donors will cough up Millions upon Millions more to a new candidate and no promises. Hell, they already have that with Biden don’t they?

Not happening…

The only way it works is if the donors ask or are given refunds in full with the promise of a similar or like supporting donation for a candidate to be named in the future but there is none. Very few of them like or will likely fund Kamala voluntarily or promise to (and she know this) and so it is a Mexican standoff of sorts. Even if they manage to work that out there is the problem of the delegates and their pledges to the Biden-Harris ticket and how that would work out once Biden is off the ticket. The Dems have a real mess on their hands with a lot of hands that will need to be greased to make it work!

Given Biden’s inability to understand what is going on around him, I begin to wonder if all his jabbering at Netanyahu was actually Harris and other pro-Hamas members of his inner circle showing that they are the ones who were actually in control?

Kamala Harris Praises Campus Anti-Israel Protesters Even as Intelligence Agency Warns That Iran Is Funding and Encouraging Them

July 10, 2024

The White House is sending mixed signals over the anti-Israel protests on American campuses.

Just a day before the director of national intelligence warned that the Iranian government is providing the protestors with funding and support, Vice President Harris described the same protesters as “showing exactly what human emotion should be.”

Ms. Harris pitched her empathy for the anti-Israel student protestors in an interview with The Nation published on Monday.

Hamas might try to rejuvenate its military force, recruit new soldiers and build its underground war industry in the tunnels, becoming Hezbollah of the south, sandwiching Israel, under the command of the Ayatollah. Israel preserve the rights to raid Hamas if they try. A ceasefire to reward Biden might be signed within days.
Israel dismantled Hamas underground war industry. Mao built his war industry in caves. N. Korea built its nuclear war industry underground. Biden’s handlers have convinced themselves that what they are doing is good for the country. They have also convinced themselves that only they are capable of guiding the country through these difficult times. Unfortunately for them, if Biden leaves, they will almost certainly be out of a job because the new person won’t want them around so they will fight tooth and claw to keep him around.

There is nothing to prove. Biden can’t perform the job of President today, let alone in the future. This should be clear to anyone who takes their head out of their rear end.

Just like the long drama “who is going to be Trump’s VP pick”, we now have the drama about “Biden stepping down or not”. Just keep people busy with foolish distractions and dramas

Casual Observer

By the way at the end of the day, when you vote in a primary, you are voting for the candidate to pick whatever VP they want. You are trusting their judgement that the person they pick could be president. So in Biden’s case he and Harris already have been a ticket for 4 years. Trump not announcing a VP for as long as possible seems scarier. What if something happens to him between now and the RNC ? Trump had no VP at the time of the primary. The Dems could easily sell this as the country is in better hands of anyone but Trump and that they are the party of country while Republcans are the party of Trump. I still think some Republicans will cross over and vote for Biden.

Stu

Do you honestly think because: “Trump had no VP at the time of the primary” The Dems could easily sell this as the country is in better hands of anyone but Trump? Seriously?

On top of that, you stated: “I still think some Republicans will cross over and vote for Biden” seriously? Because the Republican Party Nominee, did not name a VP?

Casual Observer

This is going to sound crazy but I think Dems will still win. The reason is Trump’s ability to self destruct and the Dems are bottoming right now. By late July and early August it eill all reverse itself. Trump had a great few weeks but hasn’t run away with this and he won’t. Voters are looking for a better option.

Has anyone seen the Republican “project 2025”? Higher taxes for most of us and corporate tax cuts. Ending the Department of Education should make all those teachers froth at the mouth. Misch should do a rundown on this proposal.

Find Project 2025 on the Trump website for me and send a link. It isn’t there. Ending Dept of Ed would echo acts taken in Argentina. I’m all for closing it down. “all those teachers” is like “all those union members” which is like…crickets. Very small, but organized, number of voters.

Politics in the U.S. tend to a sideshow for the plebes and this election is definitely fulfilling this in spades. God forbid the Democrats(definitely a misnomer these days) would let the people select their candidate.

Could it be that Biden emphatically stated that he is staying in the race to buy time? Buying time for backroom machinations out of the prying eyes of the media. If Biden were to declare today that he will not run as the Democratic nominee, the press will have a field day with stories doing nothing but spouting speculation and rumors. I think the Dems want to avoid that circus at all costs leading up to November.

Biden’s brain is slowing (not unusual for persons around 80), but Trump simply doesn’t seem to have a brain (figuratively speaking). I have never heard Trump expressing a point of view “clearly, articulately, and strongly.” Why do the media just go after Biden, but ignore that the other guy can’t think straight?

Agreed! This is why the Dems MUST choose someone other than Biden/Harris or many Dem/Independent voters are not going to cast a ballot at all, which will hand the presidency and Congress to the Republicans.

Most bothersome in all of this is this faux sudden concern. This has been known a long time, defended and concealed by everyone inside the circle, MSM, the lot. Now they want to pretend they are the defenders of the elderly and America, our political process (you mean the one where they didn’t allow anyone else on the Democratic ticket/stage?). It’s all hogwash. They only cared now because the polls say he loses. Imagine defending governance by a compromised president?

I’d bet every dollar I have and every one of yours that, were he leading in the polls as he was previously, they’d have him back in his 2020 basement or his pre-debate bunker lidded up for as long as possible to have the machinery/operation work to get him across the finish line and deal with his replacement a day later.

One might argue the RNC made an error, they should have made the only debate long after the conventions. I wish they had because I’m confident the MSM, Congressional leaders, party mouthpieces and pollsters would have continued the charade they’d maintained for years all the way up to that debate and then been SHOCKED, having few options before November.

All of this is some sideshow of their own making and I pray for a comeuppance. Scripted corruption and grift foisted on the American people, packed up, as usual, by MSM and Hollywood to make the movie look different than reality.

Can we oust this evil lot?

Jon Stewart Examines Biden’s Future Amidst Calls For Him to Drop Out
The Daily Show

Jon Stewart has some concerns in the aftermath of Joe Biden’s debate performance. Jon digs into the backlash to America’s bed-wetting panic over Biden’s incoherence, some of the president’s recent slip-ups, the future of the Democratic candidate, and Biden’s promise in an ABC interview with George Stephanopoulos to give “fighting fascism” his all.

Why is it so easy for everyone to think that Trump is the only “double-downer?” In my short life, Ive met many baby boomers and older who honestly believe that they are never going to die .. ever! If Trump can double down, why cant Biden? I would also remind everyone that Biden does not turn on the lights at the Pentagon every morning. He has 5000 political appointees that run the US government. Biden is just there to keep the media entertained and settle differences between dept secretaries. My 87 yo dad walks slow, falls down (this past Sunday actually), mumbles, and is getting thinner. But nothing brings him back to life like the chance to up-end his kid .. me. 🙂 Leave Joe alone till he’s dead on the floor.

If you’re okay with this high-bar for a functional president, why not a toaster? Why have anyone at all? And clearly you’re okay with having the toaster currently in charge to remain “in charge” in an increasingly hostile world where unelected officials, people you did not elect to be “the decider(s)”, are setting policy and direction through next January? And you’re the same clowns that said Trump would be a dicatator, start WW3 and is a threat to democracy. Who knew, it was you all along. Gawd the apologists will stop at nothing. Now a clearly dimished president isn’t even a concern. Nothing to see here, move along.

Just stop and ask this very honest question of yourself: What if Donald J Trump, in July of 2020 (or frankly much earlier as Biden has been diminished for years while the media, other politicians, Hollywood all ran cover for him) stumbled about like this? Would you dismiss it and say his handlers have got this? Would you defend it and act the grand apologist, carrying water for a dimished Republican president? You know the answer but your natural inclination is to defend every Democrat at any cost at all times.

Assuming Biden/Harris were still the winner in 2020, Harris should have been president closer to 2021 than 2024. The fact she isn’t is frightening, not that I find her presidential. At least she is aware of time and place. It’s been clear for a very very long time.

Your response doesn’t address any of my reply? You seem to be saying, “aw shucks, he may be compromised but we really don’t need a ‘leader’ anyway, because, hey, we didn’t need a king either”.

We need a president that is cogent, cognitively in charge of him/herself. Harris should be president. That simple. At least until November. Sure, the government bureaucracy is massive and on continuing-resolution autopilot, which, although is THE problem, happens to also mean most of the time it just does what it does. HOWEVER, there are key decisions Presidents have to make. Notice they sent someone to the NATO summit. That someone shakes hands with allies and they make VERY BIG statements and set worldwide policy.

your argument for rehiring Biden is that we don’t really need anyone at all? WOW. Then I have something for you: that argument can be pointed at you to vote for Trump, because, hey, doesn’t matter. So, I welcome you to do so, implore you actually.

The system was designed so that a super-sharp “Captain Kirk”-like “decider” wasnt required. It took us long periods of time to actually get into the Civil War (2 years), WW1 (3 years — 1917) and WW2 (3 years) started. We only do things fast in pro sports and when we are 12. The prez can be a vegetable 99% of the time. We like it that way.

Well Biden is now at the level of a Cat, nearing the end (I have had many over the years), and sleeping 12-16 Hours A Day minimum, like Brandon.
Not eating healthy (Cats like treats), and eating Ice Cream 3-4 times a day.
Losing Focus, Dates, Names, what to do, and the proper time and place to do so, just like an aging Cat!!

If youve had cats (Ive had 7), you know they are full-power till about the last month or so. Cats age very gracefully … and quickly at the end.

Stu

Not so, as I had one with diabetes that needed shots, went blind, went into remission, and got her sight back somewhat. She aged roughly, and had a very slow life until her passing.
I had another that slowed down at around 5, lived to be 17, but didn’t move much, unless the others I had at the time, messed with her. She liked quiet.
2 were very rambunctious until death, and the other until maybe 3 years before.
So in my experience I had nothing of the sort with only 2 out of 6 fitting that example. Cats are extremely unique from my experience, but Dogs May be different, I just got one a few months ago, so I will know in about 5-8 years or so I suppose…

Joes only “handler” is Jill Biden. She doesn’t allow Joe to do ANYTHING without her approval. If Jill approves she allows WH staff to do things. Jill isn’t giving up her perks so she’s not going to let Joe resign or end his bid for re-election. Joe needs to stay in power so his family members don’t get prosecuted. I think Hunter will also go public with a lot of information damaging to Democrats if they try to put Joe out via 25th amendment. Joe would need to pardon everyone in his family if he was going to step down. This won’t look good to the voters since the WH and msm have been saying there’s no evidence of any wrong doing.

Missing from this is what happens to the $250m in the Biden/Harris coffer? If the idea—oops using a Bidenism here—expounded in the article accounts for this money to stay with the ticket, the the DNC will definitely go with it, except for one very sticky point: Kamala Harris! I think that Trump has smelled it and is going after her.
