Mitch McConnell Will Step Aside in Nov as Senate Republican Leader

Mitch McConnell, the longest-serving senate leader in history will give up that post in November.

The 82-year old Mitch McConnell will Step Down as Senate GOP Leader in November after nearly two decades of Republican leadership.

“One of life’s most underappreciated talents is to know when it’s time to move on to life’s next chapter,” he said Wednesday on the Senate floor. “So I stand before you today…to say that this will be my last term as Republican leader of the Senate.”

The 82-year-old Kentucky senator said he wasn’t “going anywhere anytime soon,” but acknowledged, “The end of my contributions are closer than I’d prefer.”

I still have enough gas in my tank to thoroughly disappoint my critics, and I intend to do so with all the enthusiasm to which they have become accustomed,” McConnell said.

Health issues have emerged for McConnell. In particular, a fall last year followed by incidents in which McConnell appeared to freeze during public appearances raised questions about his future as leader.

No Gas in the Tank

McConnell says he still has gas in the tank. If he did, he probably would not be standing down.

He is a group of senators whose term ends in 2027. I rather doubt he makes it that long.

One of life’s most underappreciated talents is to know when it’s time to move on to life’s next chapter,” said McConnell.

He is one chapter late already. It’s time for him to step aside totally and resign.

This Spending Fight Underway

Meanwhile, a Congressional battle for more spending is under way.

As noted on February 27, This Spending Fight Will End the Way they Always Do, More Money for Everything

Democrats can thank McConnell. He ushered in the big compromise that will result in free money for Ukraine and Israel with no strings attached.

That was the illegitimate John Lewis RIP opinion. If one out of the three rebel states decides to stay above the law and if Biden wins ==> half of the nation might reject his presidency. We might enter Germany’s political chaos after WWI

Biden won’t win, because he won’t be running. He is all done, and they are already skewering the man, but he doesn’t get it just yet.
Obama made sure he will be gone in a matter of months at worst. He is crushing the Democrat Party into little pieces, that won’t go back together again that easily, if he is left in office much longer IMO.
The Dems and RINO’s all know this, and will make sure a rake is left out, a peddle gets stuck, or a slippery stair and it’s over for him. Just a matter of weeks or a month or so, and it’s done!

It’s about time red states ban Biden from ballot for treason, dereliction of duty and corruption. I hate to see Republicans playing by the rules and being nice to tyrannical Democrats. Republican must teach Dems a lesson using their own tactics.

Let’s see if Trump puts up much of a legal fight on Illinois. Brer Rabbit and the tar baby. Plenty of Irish-Catholic grandmas swooned over JFK and RFK back when they were kids. The demographic on southwest side of Chicago and many ‘burbs are like Dearborn Michigan – except way way more populous. No Trump on ballot- RFK jr wins IL. Let’s see how Governor Fatass presides at the convention. He’s no Mayor Daley I. Mayor Conehead is worse than Mayor Beetlejuice.

This speech takes on a different context in 2024 when one realizes per Mike Benz that the ‘white guys who shot JFK, MLK and RFK were all CIA stooges and frame-ups.

Hearing you Mish now on Coast To Coast AM. Thanks for the great economic commentary.

I wish McConnell would have addressed the debt more such as been more vocal on holding budget increases to just below the annual inflation rate, if they were not going to increase income taxes or reform entitlements.

I very much under appreciate the fact, that if McConnell meant what he said, he would resign effective immediately. The end of his lack of contributions, are long past, let’s hope!

Even at this severely lackluster performance of an elderly man long past his prime, he wants to continue to disappoint his Conservative Republican partners on the floor. He plans on mustering up, what little enthusiasm that train body can handle, and we have already seen it ain’t much…
I hear them say that health issues may be an issue for McConnell. This is starting to really raise questions and concerns about his future as leader.
Maybe he could be honest for a change, and just admit to the open public “I am an old, tired Man, who needs to sit my ass down, out of the spotlight, and with zero responsibilities. I have earned that, and “Thank You”
He would get the largest applause he could probably ever have achieved in his entire political career, and at the very tail end of it. He literally has a chance, to go out in a blaze of glory, but what do you think the old, tired man will do? Hmm..

Strom Thurmond had senate tenure but had a mostly inconsequential legislative record apart from holding up presidential nominations. McConnell has the tenure too. While his legislative accomplishments are far narrower but still more substantive than Thurmond’s, his thumb prints on policy as Senate Leader are indeed consequential. In my view, he cemented his legacy by obtaining a conservative super majority on the Supreme Court. For this, he had an enabler in Trump. Having achieved his court goal, McConnell and Trump have no further use for each other and it shows. The announcement today may have everything to do with a Trump second term or it may simply be that the remaining juice is no longer worth the squeeze given age and overall health. I am no fan of McConnell. But I do acknowledge his mastery of the Senate and his smarts in achieving his Supreme Court objectives. He has continually run circles around Schumer who gives noble floor speeches but has largely been neutralized by McConnell on key policy objectives. It’s quite the Senatorial legacy!

Why doesn’t he do something useful with his stepping down, akin to Eisenhower warning about the MIC. He could warn all Americans about the evil influence of APIAC on American foriegn policy. But that would take too much courage from a self serving sycophant.

It’s too early to make an announcement like this. I could understand making the announcement AFTER the 2024 elections are over to avoid showing Party weakness and give party members enough time to find a replacement. This announcement is a distraction.

Guess you knew I’d jump in, since he’s one of my senators. Even the Republicans I know personally (and that’s quite a few) hate him and want to see him gone. I think this means one of two things – either he doesn’t run in 2026 (when he’s due to run again), which means that he has already lined up a successor (rumor has it that Daniel Cameron was the guy, though I’m not sure that’s true). Or he retires next year (I doubt it), which is why the KY legislature is trying to get legislation passed to control his replacement – we have a D governor and they don’t want him appointing a D to replace McConnell; I believe they did pass something last year but I’m not sure how constitutional (state constitutional) it is. I heard they’re working on something else this year.

At least Rand Paul will be sticking around for a while. He’s our good senator (if there is such a thing).

Between forty and eighty people accumulate most power and money. Between 40 and
80 u worry a lot. U try to stay young to compete with the twenties, but in the seventies u are switching to healthy maintenance.
The happiness chart : people over 40 get less happy with age for about two decades, drawing a U shape. In the late 70’s their well being curve up again even if they are not healthy.

Unfortunately for the electorate, most politicians stop working for their constituents after the first 6 years.

After that its all about getting reelected, keeping their jobs and benefits for another term and collecting money from their handlers, the corporate lobbyists.

Agreed. At 82 he technically still a member of the silent generation so he predates even Boomers!

He’s why we need either term limits or max age limits (say age 69 is the oldest you can run for office so you’d be out at 73).

It’s long past time for him to step aside for younger generations.
