Motion to Oust McCarthy as Speaker of the House Is Coming Right Up

As revenge for passing a bill with Democrat support, representative Matt Gaetz plans a “motion to vacate” which will trigger a vote for a new Speaker of the House.

First Motion to Vacate in 100 Years

The Wall Street Journal reports reports Matt Gaetz Plans Vote to Oust Kevin McCarthy After Speaker Avoids Shutdown

In a dramatic weekend vote, McCarthy had finally pushed aside the GOP hard-liners who had been dogging him for months, opting instead to pass legislation with Democratic support. He averted a government shutdown and bought Congress a few more weeks to negotiate its spending priorities. But it may cost him his speakership, with rebels seeing even stronger reason to press for his ouster because he joined forces with the opposition.

“I do intend to file a motion to vacate against Speaker McCarthy this week,” Gaetz told CNN on Sunday morning. “I think we need to rip off the Band-Aid. I think we need to move on with new leadership that can be trustworthy.”

Following a series of votes last week aimed to placate the party’s far-right wing, a political reality emerged: McCarthy could never get enough dissidents on board. With the government’s funding set to expire on Sunday at 12:01 a.m., he brought to the floor Saturday a measure keeping the government open through mid-November without conservative demands attached. It passed with the support of more than half of Republicans, and all Democrats except one.

“I tried every possible way,” McCarthy told reporters after the vote.

The motion to vacate has come up for a vote only once in the House, more than 100 years ago, and never successfully. In 1910, allies of then-Speaker Joseph Cannon (R., Ill.) brought up the motion in order to vote it down, as a show of strength. In 2015, former Rep. Mark Meadows (R., N.C.) took the initial step of filing a motion to vacate against then-Speaker John Boehner (R., Ohio) by dropping a resolution in a wooden hopper on the House floor. But Meadows never took the next step to call it up on the floor. If a motion is called up, then the speaker has to schedule it for a vote within two legislative days. McCarthy allies would then likely seek to block it by offering a “motion to table” the resolution, with Democrats as the key swing votes. Democrats who want to help McCarthy don’t necessarily have to vote for him—they could simply vote present—to lower the threshold he needs to hold onto his post.

Conservatives had made clear in recent days that they would try to topple McCarthy if he passed a stopgap measure that relied on Democratic support. Gaetz had called McCarthy a “failed speaker” on the House floor and said Saturday after the vote that the speaker was on “tenuous ground.”

Where’s This Headed?

I suggest Nowhere. Gaetz does not have enough votes for anyone he wants.

It takes a majority of those present and voting to elect a speaker. Democrats would never hit a majority because no Republican would vote for Democrat. The opposite may not hold true given that McCarthy was forced to pass a bill sufficient enough to meet Democrat’s demands.

More likely, some Democrats could vote “present” lowering the total McCarthy needs to stay in power.

It took 15 rounds of votes to elect McCarthy last time. I suspect it may only take 2 or 3 ballots this time if McCarthy works out a deal with Democrats.

Nothing Instead of Something

And here we are. Instead of getting something, Republicans get nothing.

For discussion, please see The House Passes Bill Averting a Government Shutdown, Senate Approval Expected

McCarthy now taunts Gaetz: “If somebody wants to make a motion against me, bring it.”

So Gaetz will.

What purpose will it serve?

A very solid Real Speaker, who is also a Real Republican will take the helm in 43 days and should easily get an overwhelming “Yes” vote.
Not only obviously, will he be a better Speaker than McCarthy, but he won’t He won’t Lie to his Fellow Republicans Faces, while cutting deals with Democrats Behind their Backs!!! We are already Miles Ahead!
We shall see how things eventually play out, but the first couple days, look to be bearing some fruit!!

What RINO McCarthy said on NEWSMAX yesterday, now makes since!!!

Rumors are he signed a deal with the DEMOCATS to fund the UKRAINE WAR, for the 45 day extension deal!!!

Reply to  JRM

Unfortunately it did allow for the 45 Day Continuing Resolution (Business As Usual in other words). That gives them everything they wanted, except for the Ukrainian $$$.
That was done via a side deal, but it was merely a promise to implement at a later date. With McCarthy no longer in place, to help usher that promise through, it remains to be seen exactly how this plays itself out.
Shenanigans of some sort will have to be played it would appear, if they want to get their hands on the money put aside for Ukraine by McCarthy. It is not labeled as specifically for that purpose of course, but let’s see if it’s possible to keep it that way.
We are on the right path at least, if stalling the abuse of power by the Democrats is considered a moral victory if nothing else. Now the hard part comes into play…

So the entire reason the Republicans went through the moves they did, before agreeing to trust McCarthy and place him at the helm, turns out to be an extremely intelligent maneuver. As a result, they were able to immediately remove the back room dealing, behind your back, RINO!!!

For now the Republicans have a staunch conservative as a stand in, that will do, and especially in these times. With the power of the purse, we now have a leader in place, that doesn’t leave his wallet on the table for anyone to pick from it, and on purpose!

In 44 days the CR will expire, and it is then the House will have to have their house in order. 45 days is a lifetime in the political world. Not often do you get such luxury of time, ahead of major decisions to be made. It’s not like it hasn’t been on the agenda this entire time. Now we have the time to actually finalize everything for the real bill. We can thank McCarthy for that if for absolutely nothing else…

McCarthy was a terrible choice in the 1st place. Sooner or later this was bound to happen. Problem is most representatives are happy with the way things are. For them. Not for us. On both sides of the aisle. And McCarthy is a don’t rock the boat leader.

From the day before he was sworn in it was always going to be the Unicorn-Party. The party that prints and prints and prints and truly believes the fantasy will always be; printing forever.

It will not always be. Everyone knows this but it doesn’t have to always be! Just long enough to enjoy your limited amount of time on this planet. You don’t need 100 years. Not even 50 for them. 20, even 10 good enough.

Biden, Pelosi, Schumer, Klaus, even Trump. 10 is probably more than enough. If the world gets set on fire oh well. They will not be around to see it. I likely will however. I’m not happy about it but what can I do? Defend my property and get arrested and jailed. NO. I am not doing that. I will do something though. I also need another 20 plus years so…

He is a Democrat, Uni-partier…same thing. Doesn’t matter anymore. Vote to restore order to the budget and the welfare state is going to flog you. Not many can survive it. Either keep the printer going or the welfare state is going to loot and steal more face to face stores, burn, murder. Give them what they want. It will eventually destroy the country but oh well. That won’t manifest for another 10 years or so and by then he will be an old man living on some homestead away from it all like the rest of them. They do not care about it long term. Their time is short.

It should be obvious to all that the “left and or right” are no longer available. What we have now is the democratic criminals or the Republican criminals, that is your choice.
Do you really want to know why they keep sending money to Ukraine? If that country collapses, all of shenanigans of both parties will be exposed, most of our representative’s are guilty of the same issues as Biden.

Occam’s razor says you’re right. Because there’s no other sane reason to flush so much money down the toilet.

The logic is we needed Ukraine to join NATO so Russia wouldn’t invade them. The only reason Russia invaded them was because we we’re trying to get Ukraine into NATO.

Reminds me of a friend who had guns. He needed them to protect his stuff. The only stuff he had that anyone would want to steal was his guns. And they were stolen. Nothing else.

It was also the small matter of the Ukrainian regime bombarding its own citizens and demonising non-Ukranian language and ethnicities within their borders for almost a decade. Eventually the populace had enough, and decided to split off.

This is bringing bipartisanship.
McCarthy wants to support ukr, as do all dems and some reps. Gaetz is killing the rep peaceniks by forcing McCarthy to work with dems to get anything done.
Funding ukr is dead for 6 weeks, and maybe more support to end all funding will build…and ukr would quickly collapse if all funding stops. But dems have a price for their support, not just their programs but also their war.
Not sure this favors Biden in 24. Imo this might delay ukr surrender until maybe next summer, which would be the worst time for Biden, hardly enough time for even a forgetful public to forget… and this is the worst outcome of all our foreign adventures.

Yet again, another under reported story by Mish. Why?

It’s being reported that McCarthy has agreed to a backroom deal with half-dead, turtle McConnell & the dems to bring an up / down vote to provide more funding for Ukraine during the next 45 days. If true which it probably is, then every Congressman like Gaetz who at least appears to have a spine & attempts to push the house in a conservative direction needs to at least try to oust UniParty-RINO-McCarthy.

The guy is literally Schumer’s moderate, long-lost brother. And, he gets on the Sunday talk shows saying, “Bring it on” all the while supporting an attempt to expel Gaetz via an ongoing ethics investigation.

McCarthy is Conservatives worst nightmare: UniParty-RINO sellout.

Gaetz’s motion may interfere with the Biden impeachment inquiry, which is worth many more political points than replacing McCarthy. A new Speaker who is more conservative will make budget approval even more difficult 45 days from now, maybe even shutting down the government. Gaetz would have been better off trying to slow the spending pendulum down instead of reversing it.

The civil wars within both parties are still raging since at least 2008. Grassroots supporters on both sides remain outraged that both parties refuse to advance the will of the people. On the right, the Freedom Caucus, Tea Party disciples, and MAGA supporters represent the actual conservatives in government. The rest of the Republican Party are establishment RINOs and Neocons serving the elites.

On the left, the current grassroots support lies with RFK jr., but it is unclear how many Bernie bros and independents he will attract.

Everyone should be cheering on the grassroots struggles within both parties because that’s the only remaining actual representation of regular citizen voters.

I would suggest that sometimes nothing IS better than something, if the something you are getting is not going in the right direction. Kind of like the old expression..”if you find yourself in a hole getting deeper, stop digging.”

I know there is a difference between principal and political reality, but sometimes you need to stand on principal, even if you are going to pay a price politically. Let’s be honest.. Democrats know this, and live it. 1994 Assault Weapons Ban, and Obamacare come to mind.

Republicans are typical scared of their own shadows, and wilt every time a Democrat or media, but I repeat myself, says boo. Say what you will about Trump, but he gave it as good as he got it. By no means effectively to get something, but he kept moving in his direction despite whining.

The purpose? When do we stop Congress from being such dip-shits? What you are saying is let’s keep the way Congress does Business. The excuse for winning these little battles is the mindset of the small-minded. The whole system is so far removed from the original intent that we are not the same country. America is not the America of the 1780s. And the number one place to put the blame is Congress.

Mish, it would help if you rethink what you are supporting. The system is totally corrupted; you call it politics, but it is really corruption. Nothing is done for the people Congress supposedly represents; it’s all self-serving. Your comments only serve to enable the corrupt system to continue down the road to ruin. We only get this opportunity to make significant changes to corruption when emergencies, such as we have right now, emerge. But you are supporting no changes, only a continued business as usual. So it goes.

I must disagree with your comment Mish, and how you determine Gaetz is a jackass, when you have Literally Dozens of Other Options in the Republican Party that are Truly Jackasses, as you put it. Not to mention literally Dozens more in the Democrat Party.
Gaetz is merely trying to bring back Order from Chaos. He is Holding the Democrats Accountable, and somebody at times , Needs to Hold the Republicans Accountable too!!!
You have to start someplace, and this was a PERFECT PLACE TO START. Right out of the gate, McCarty Leads with Lies, Deceit, Backroom Deals and Shenanigans… Was Gaetz supposed to sit there and be happy with “Business as Usual” with this clown?
Somebody, Anybody at this point, Must Stop The ROT. Our Political Establishment is Filled with Grifters, Liars, Thief’s, Manipulators, Etc. and we must clean them ALL OUT or this Country is going DOWN HARD!

I for One will Gladly and Happily Take Nothing Over Something, When Something Looks Like THAT!!! I want to get back to truthful and honest negotiations for what’s BEST for the American People, and in the Open and on Display for All to See! This was a PERFECT EXAMPLE of that. Open and honest debate about crucial matters to our Nation is what Citizens are Looking for, and instead right out of the gate we get lies, manipulation and deception, yeah I’ll pass and take Nothing over Something if that is The Something that you refer too… No Thanks!

Gaetz can motion to vacate every day the House meets. The House must vote on every separate motion. The votes can continue until McCarthy resigns or introduces one defunding bill per department as he agreed. McCarthy double crossed the House. Gaetz popularity builds. McCarthy backs into every budget negotiation bent over with his pants down.

Great comment, why didn’t McCarthy bring up each of these spending bills one at a time like it’s suppose to be done? What has he and congress been doing besides not doing their job? You’re not going to reduce this out of control spending without going through each bill one at a time.

The purpose of initiating a motion to vacate by Gaetz will achieve nothing in Congress as you correctly note. My take is that it has everything to do with Gaetz gaining additional MAGA cred as he positions himself to run for Florida governor. It’s all about establishing tangible tribal markers for future elections. It’s a relatively low consequence action by Gaetz. He will lose as will not obtain tbe vote threshold. He knows this. But it gains him free MAGA street cred in the Sunshine State.

McCarthy should have been booted when he passed the unlimited debt ceiling. Is anyone watching the bond market? Almost every analyst I could find said this past January to go long the long bond. Inflation would drop and the FED would pivot. I was practically the lone wolf claiming the massive amount of supply from over spending and maturing would overwhelm the bond market. Sticky inflation isn’t helping but IMHO it this massive supply causing this bond collapse. Gaetz, doesn’t have the votes and truth is this will most likely strengthen McCarthy as he can now team up with his uni-party but it still is the right thing to do. These people aren’t serious, the reckoning is coming and the blame lies with these fiscally irresponsible lunatic’s that drove us into this ditch. Those of us with some fiscal sanity can at least point out that we tried the only options available and tried to warn you.

Gaetz says that the point of this action is to expose McCarthy as a RINO/Democrat, which it may well do, but it won’t oust him.
In many parliaments and congresses around the world, there are no shortage of fake “conservatives”, and there is a general trend towards exposing them.
You should see the state of the current Tory conference in England. The membership is utterly depressed at having “Blue Labour” (=RINO) MPs.
