Senate Republicans just handed a major campaign issue to democrats.
Guaranteed Access to Contraception Denied
The Wall Street Journal reports Senate Republicans Block Bill Protecting Access to Contraception
Senate Republicans blocked a Democratic measure that would protect access to contraception nationwide, in a vote designed to show the contrast between the two parties on women’s reproductive choices headed into the fall election.
The bill, which included protections for emergency contraception pills such as Plan B, was backed by 51 senators, with 39 opposed, short of the 60 votes needed to advance under chamber rules.
The measure was the first in a series of votes planned by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) to paint Republicans as not only against abortion but opposed to contraception and in vitro fertilization as well. It is part of an election-year strategy that Schumer and other top Democrats think will galvanize suburban women, a crucial group of swing voters.
Sen. Steve Daines (R., Mont.) said the votes show Schumer’s desperation. Democrats control the Senate 51-49 but face an uphill battle in the fall to keep the majority.
“It’s a political stunt,” said Daines, who chairs Senate Republicans’ campaign arm. “And they’re just doing this to try to create an issue because they can’t argue on any other issues right now, because they’re losing on inflation, they’re losing on the border, they’re losing on national security, they’re losing on energy.”
Two Republicans—centrist Sens. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine—crossed party lines to support advancing the contraception bill. “I sent a message that says I support women’s access to contraception. If this is a messaging vote, that’s my message,” Murkowski said. “This is contraception! We thought we resolved this 50, 60 years ago!”
Political Stunt?!
Call it want you want but two Republican Senators stood for common sense. The others are political and ideological idiots.
Schumer sent Republicans a fat pitch. My grandmother would have blasted it out of the park.
Trump may need independents and suburban women to win. In fact, Trump should have been out front on this and advised Republicans to go along.
“This is contraception! We thought we resolved this 50, 60 years ago!”
Indeed!
Those who voted against this bill are a pack of Neandertals.
Q: Do Republicans stupidly want to challenge that?
A: It seems to me they just did.

Let’s be real here: The people seeking contraception and abortion are those most likely to breed future Dem voters. Repubes need to get a grip on the Louisville Slugger and simply learn when to take a few pitches for the walk.
mad as a box of frogs decision!
pulled out my handy pocket US Constitution, not sure the part where states delegated day after pill availability to the federal government? New York can preserve partial birth abortions, Mississippi can ban day after pill.
That is exactly what the Supreme Court ruled last year.
Its also the reason why Ruth Bader Ginsburg said Roe v Wade would be overturned: because the federal government has no authority to make any ruling pro or con.
“All powers not expressly called for herein are reserved to the states or to the people” … its right there in black and white for anyone bothering to read the Constitution. Roe v Wade was unconsittutional.
Mish has some bug up his backside about abortion and protecting Roe v Wade in spite of the evidence that the ruling was unconsitutional, and in spite of Ginsburg stating that she, as pro-choice, had to admit that Roe v Wade was unconstitutional.
Destroying the US family structure clearly isn’t helping the political right or left. Intended or not, that was the primary social and economic outcome of Roe v Wade.
Its a shame Mish won’t discuss what the court actually ruled instead of political gaslighting
We’ve seen these baited bills before, without knowing whats is in the bill? which takes hours to figure out. It’s a waste of time Schumer needs prison for what he’s up to. They table any bills from republican’s or destroy the intent of it with pork.
Stupid Mish thinks we can make the world a better place if we just elect the right (left?) morons to micro-manage our lives.
I’ll pretend to care when the average age of DC politicians falls at least below 65, and preferably closer to 50. Until then, f#ck all of them
Another reminder that just because we all see Democrats as the bigger problem, Republicans are not the answer.
Instead of trying to enslave women, we should free them.
Russia up to no good:

Despite not being a Christian my social views are sometimes even more conservative to my ‘believer’ friends. That being said I find myself constantly banging my head against the wall when conservatives insist on pushing this issue to their own detriment. The society and culture in the Anglophone world is already deeply corrupted…you can’t put the genie back in the bottle without some sort of massive culture changing event.
Nothing to see here.
The inclusion of the Plan B medication in the bill puts it into the realm of abortion for some I would expect since it is taken after possible conception and interferes with the development of any fertilized egg. That inclusion of Plan B invalidates the claim that this bill was solely about contraception.
Exactly. It’s abortifacient, so it’s equivalent to chemical abortion.
Standing up for families is dumb? Okay. Hormonal contraception has led to the downfall of humanity.
A libertarian who wants to decide what pills others take?
No. Not a libertarian at all.
People are dying the world over, there is HOMELESSNESS, and Inflation is wreaking havoc on all of us and THIS is what they address?
The people that want this are the people that would vote for them anyway. It’s just so dumb.
Republicans did something dumb? Dumb is their brand. They’re against education of any sort, cater to stupid people with hysteria and lies, and then govern however they like, knowing the stupids will put up with whatever they do because they are on Team Stupid.
This kind of crap is why the Libertarians hate the republicans. Trump showing up at their convention was almost as dumb as the 4 seasons lawn care debacle. Libertarians may be crazy, but they generally aren’t stupid.
Democrats promote CRT indoctrination in schools. In California, even math class is to include racist concepts. Math is not about race. Science is not about race. In Chicago, the Democrat mayor wants to terminate success academies, which have helped minority students who have been attending them, get ahead educationally. In Democrat run Baltimore, black parents are complaining that their children are not getting an education, considering their kids are mostly below grade level in math and reading in the Democrat run schools.
Home schooling has increased among Republicans. A smart idea, considering what Democrats are doing to public schools. It was kind of stupid for Libertarians to nominate a left winger as their presidential candidate.
Apparently, the birth rate has fallen to 1.6, which is a record low. The country needs more children, not less, in terms of demographics. Rather stupid not to think about the future consequences of that.
Ah, here’s one now….
Chester get back in mommy’s basement
I can agree with how stupid republicans are about so many issues, I will state democrats are committing treason
But we do not reproduce. Hence the open borders, open to the world
I wish republicans other than Trump will come into the cities.
We are _ucked
Pray tell why does the world need more people ?
I believe he means more white people.
No glove no love
Maybe if Mish and a number of people that parrots his view on this sat down and thought about they would realize the Republicans aren’t blocking any access to contraceptives. If they were, they would be sponsoring a bill. If there are roadblocks, they existed with a Democratic congress and Presidents, including one who showered with his young daughter, damaging her psyche. Seriously, where is it hard to buy contraceptives? Maybe Mars but that’s about it.
Schumer, a malignant but wily, political operator sets up a bill and labels it as something different from what it is. Think “Inflation Reduction Act” which called for massive spending. He then enlists a member of the Fourth Estate, many of whom are notorious liars and hacks, to parrot his pitch. Oh, they interview a Republican “for balance”. But they don’t print, or ask, him why the bill isn’t what it claims.
Schumer served up a patty of cow manure and Mish ate the whole thing thinking it was filet mignon.
https://stateline.org/2022/05/19/some-states-already-are-targeting-birth-control/
There are so many ways to prevent and kill babies. I can’t imagine that this bill will make any difference.
We need to outlaw Fukking.
If you look at the people that push this kind of crap, they are people NOBODY wants to have sex with. I think that says a lot.
You don’t get it. The goal to is to enslave women.
There you go again with the ‘enslave women to their wombs’ thing. Only a hysterical woman would make such a patently ridiculous claim.
If RFK Jr were smart he would come out and take a stand against Republican nonsense on abortion and other social conservative policies. He could then stand against Dem policies on the border and other similar Dem nonsense and do really well. If he were on the ballot in all 50 states, I think he could win, if he actually went against the nonsense of both parties. This is truly where most of the independents are and there are more independents voting in this election than any election before.
I can tell by looking at the guy that he’s got a ‘YEEEEEEEERGH!!’ in him just waiting to bust out and end his campaign.
He’s not Howard Dean.
He’s got that crazy Dean gleam in his eye. There’s a YEEEEEEARGH in there, and it wants out.
Dems getting back the majority in the House suddenly becomes possible. I agree with some here who say this is effectively a nod to Biden winning re-election by traditional Republicans who don’t want MAGA to take over the House/Senate.. A few other things I expect to happen this year:
US grid and power outages on election day/night due to an attack by Russia or ChinaBombings at the Paris Olympics likely carried out by RussiaExtreme heat across the northern hemisphere summerHurricanes and storms doing more damage than usual in the Southeast and causing 500 year floods on the coastline
“…attack…bombings… by Russia or China.”
this type of terrorism is not their style… neither the russians nor the chinese.
if the US grid and/or Paris olympics are targeted this year, it will be the usual culprits:
(islamists)
-or-
homegrown false-flag ops – to achieve/advance very specific western/elitist narratives.
my two cents, for what it’s worth.
They contract their work out. Doesn’t make it any less their style.
How much is tinfoil weighted in the CPI?
Casual, 500-year floods = 0.2% annual chance. I’ll take you up on that bet.
Even the dems can wallop the short bus kids the republicans are fielding. It’s pathetic.
Trump cant get out in front of it because that is what his base wants.
straight-up RINO neoCon (election) sabotage.
we can expect the introduction of Lindsey Graham’s 50-state federal abortion prohibition bill in… 3… 2… 1…
just so we’re clear here – this is not MAGA… this is beltwaySwamp RINO neoCon TDS neverTrump sabotage… these reptiles would rather lose/forfeit elections than make room in THEIR party for populists… you know, the folks that actually win elections.
MAGA populists are quite happy to leave the abortion issue @ the state level… where it is… where it belongs.
this shite has Mitch McConnell’s fingerprints ALL OVER IT. their next act of treason & sabotage will be their inevitable & predicable attempt to deny Trump the GOP nomination… cuz “convicted felon”.
if you can’s see this what’s coming, then you can’t be helped.
MAGA is mostly religious whack jobs… and they demand this.
Trump burned himself down already. No need for sabotage.
lulz…
Senate GOP = MAGA… got it.
please tell us more… our actual whackjob quota has not been met.
It would seem to me that if you don’t favor abortion, then you LOGICALLY should favor the easy availability of contraceptives.
Where this logic breaks down is for those who follow the teachings of the Catholic church, which doesn’t believe in contraceptives in any form.
Some people who oppose abortion are okay with barrier methods like condoms, but are against abortifacients like the “pill” and RU486. That’s the stance of the Orthodox churches, I believe.
It’s not about abortion. It’s about control. If you can force someone to have a kid, you have a captive employee/consumer that simply can’t opt out no matter how bad they’re treated.
Having a kid means you won’t make waves, and will do as you’re told.
You’re not forcing anyone to have a child if you’re against oral contraceptives. The choice was made in your bedroom, and not by some mean nasty republican in Congress. Take accountability for your own actions.
There are 26,000 rape babies in the oven in Texas alone.
Tell me about their mom’s choice.
We can make exceptions for rape and incest, however that’s a ridiculous excuse to hold onto because 99% are false.
So… add a murder to the rape?
Is it murder, or not?
How many of those are actual rapes and not just vindictive women? Or are you one of those believe-all-women types?
Your solution is to pretend it wasn’t rape?
I’m confused… are you pro rape or pro murder, or both?
Having children means the human race won’t die out.
So it was the childless Democrats who rebelled against the Covid mandates?
Mish – From what I understand this was another massive PORK spending bill for everybody and anybody on the vote blue grift list. The contraceptive item was the shit sandwich the Dems planted to make the GOP take a big bite.
Until WE DEMAND single issue bills, this kid of deception and diversion will continue. And there will NEVER be accountability …… which is what congress wants
I’ve been DEMANDING single issue bills for decades. Doesn’t seem to have made any difference to Congress!
So while I am at it, let me also go on record DEMANDING that Congress ban insider trading by Congresspeople.
Let’s see how that works out in my remaining lifetime.
You, me and the other 500 of us needs to turn in to 100million but that would mean almost 100million would have to actually know what we are even talking about
Women should be required to wear ankle-length dresses and those Handmaids Tale bonnets.
… with a leather teddy underneath.
I love it. Republicans want government to control people’s lives and they no longer try and hide it. Dems are pussies and don’t want to get in mud and fight them so they do nothing. I despise Trump and Republicans and the Democratic Party is worthless when they should be killing it electorally considering their opponents.
I think this election will get the dems to the polls. Nobody’s too worried about trump winning, but they want him to lose BADLY this time.
The Republican Party presents a vision of its voters that is extremely compelling in the US. A Republican is a God-fearing, patriotic, self-made, man or woman with grit. And grit means you own multiple firearms and drive a large, imposing vehicle. So when you register and vote Republican, you get to claim this self-image. And that self-image has enough value to be willing to have your representatives vote on all kinds of nonsense. The Democrats have nothing to counter that. Few want the self-image of a young Harvard professor who drives a Prius and wears shorty-short cut-offs while attending his favorite drag shows.
I read a better analysis of this issue. From Fox news quoting Republican lawmakers, “infringes on the parental rights and religious liberties of some Americans and lets the federal government force religious institutions and schools, even public elementary schools, to offer contraception like condoms to little kids.”
There was enough opposition to the above to outweigh what would have been a super majority agreement on a narrower right to access contraception implied by the bills name.
Little kids could only use condoms as water balloons.
Haha if those republican families were raising their kids right they would not need to worry about condoms in school. In fact free condoms would keep the heathen population down. From a finical point condoms are cheaper than the government supporting a child.
Why do liberals feed the need to give out condoms in elementary schools? Sexualize children? Because they want to destroy and pervert children, reduce the control parents have over them. Everything Democrats do is ugly and vicious.
They don’t hand out condoms anymore than they have a litter box for the kids that identify as cats. Stop spreading hysterical bullshit.
This is the equivalent of Demcrats trying to impose gun control. Abortion and gun control are both largely settled in my view. Any attempt to instill stricter gun control laws by Democrats or stricter abortion laws by Republicans is foolish for either party to attempt. Doing so during an election cycle is downright moronic.
Republicans are not blocking access to contraceptions. They are against the government funding Planned Parenthood and other abortion clinics and limiting those who have religious objections. Try reading the National Review article on it instead of swallowing wholesale what nonsense Schumer gives you.
Welcome to politics. Contraception isn’t the national government’s business.
Indeed it is. Every woman in every state should have equal access to contraceptives, should they desire them. States with illiterate governments, such as MS, LA, KY, etc. should not be able to limit such rights.
Why shouldn’t they?
Voting at the local level is much more important than the national level. That’s because in general you have much more in common with your neighbor than you do with someone on the other side of the country.
Don’t like the policy, vote to change it. It should be straight forward at the State level since you don’t need national level approval.
States need to be able to pass laws that drive libs crazy. That way they’ll move back to California before they turn decent states into bastions of buggery.
Dude… nobody wants your corn. Relax.
Jojo, I agree with your 2nd sentence, and with your opinion in the 3rd. These are our opinions, but neither of us is the king of the country, nor even of any state.
The 1st sentence begs the question of where in the constitution our national government is given power over contraceptives. Where do you think that is?
Whatever our opinions, the laws of states are what they are, whether they can read and write or not, or whether we want to look down our noses at them or not.
Each and every person in these United States should have the same basic and equal rights, regardless of what state they reside in.
States should have the right to set their own laws, provided that doing so does not reduce the equal rights of their residents compared to the residents of the whole country.
Hopefully, this will be made clearer when/if the Constitution is ever rewritten. Or when the AI’s take over.
They’re still working through the child marriage thing, but I’m sure they’ll get there by the 22nd century.
Republicans stuck in the 60’s and trying to take the country back to the 50’s….
The 1850’s…that is.
Stick to the Economy and they could win. Keep setting the country back on rights for women and they’ll keep losing.
Hopefully there’s an ACTUAL real 3rd party for Independents for the 2028 Elections. So sick of these two parties and their Geriatric Park Candidates.
Abortion was legal in the 1850s. So was slavery, heartily endorsed by Democrats. Both went out of fashion at roughly the same time.
David i caught a bit of an interview with some author. From what i can recall. He was saying after nixion know one wanted to vote for republicans so they had to start focusing on culture wars to will elections.
Likely Randall Ballmer or Kristin Du Mez. Also Jonathan Dudley. Ballmer traces the abortion debate back to issues of segregation and taxes fairly well and brings the receipts as a historian. To Dr. Funkenstein above, no – abortion was not out of fashion until the early 1980’s. Well into the 1970’s, the majority opinion within the evangelical world was still pro-choice. See the Christianity Today article from 1968 by Bruce Waltke, then a professor at the Dallas Theological Seminary and part of the Southern Baptist Convention.
1996 HBO special, “Back In Town,” Carlin tears into the pro-life movement:
i am always amused by George, and his sheer genius.
RIP George! you will be always remembered.

Carlin..there was a bitter hate filled pothead
No father either.
With this line of Democrat thinking, why not just make child bearing illegal all together? I mean there’s millions more low/non skilled workers in the world we can easily import into the country to do the labor.
This would also help shut down all the public schools over time as only adults would be allowed to enter the country for their labor.
Could reappoint some teachers to help teach the low skilled immigrants some basics like how to properly operate a vehicle or tabulate a checkbook.
Stupid is correct. They have a chance to take Congress and the Senate and they are wrecking it. How can they win elections in which huge numbers of women automatically vote them down?
According to the article, it included (or was it solely about?) so-called “plan B” emergency contraception. The religious nuts, er, religious people I know who are against abortion are also against any kind of “plan B” pill as it’s supposed to be an abortion pill (their idea is that life begins at conception, not implantation).
I’m with you on this, though I would like to see more about the proposed bill before rendering any kind of judgment. And I figured it might be a slippery slope from abortion bans to contraception bans.
The idea that life begins at conception is SCIENCE but call-it-what-you-will….maybe a clump of cells. Plan B is simply not contraception and should have a MD supervision due to side-effects (physical/psychological).
I actually would not call it a ‘baby’ of course. I’m not a nut.
Each side has its little pet wedge issues. They are in glass with a notice to break it in an emergency. The public is too brainwashed to understand they’re being played.
If Murkowski and Collins voted for the bill, that means some Democrats voted against. Who were the Dems that agreed with Republicans?
Is this abortion pills or contraception?
Exactly … manipulation of the language is ongoing even the WSJ.
Plan B is abortion of a fertilized egg (aka embryo).
As Janet Yellen says, the pregnancy is only transitory.
FYI-Plan B’s primary role is to prevent/delay ovulation.
Any poison pills attached to this one?
No obvious ones. The text is fairly straightforward. I think there would be some resistance based on the factually incorrect idea that hormonal birth control is an abortifacient (it’s not), and a potential objection to Plan B being included as a contraceptive as some believe it’s an abortifacient (in it’s primary function of preventing ovulation, it’s not but there is a potential for it to prevent implantation so the objection there has marginal merit.) There’s some language in the bill regarding the US’ historical use of sterilization for some marginalized populations (native americans, disabled…) that could offend some folks who don’t like to own up to our own history – and in their defense, the language in that section adds nothing to the legal implications of the bill and wasn’t necessary.
All the Republicans had to do was modify the bill to their liking
