Denver is Forecast for a Monster Blizzard this Weekend, Please Do Not Venture Out

Winter Storm Warnings

Be prepared, Denver could get one of its Biggest Snowstorms Since 1885.

Forecasters continued keeping a close eye on weather conditions that are expected to unleash a monster snowstorm across the Denver area in the coming days that could possibly become one of the biggest snowstorms in the Mile High City’s history. The looming storm threatens to be a long-duration event that could result in snowfall totals nearing 2 feet in Denver and piling as high as 3 feet in places west of Denver, such as Boulder and Fort Collins. Heavy snow will stretch north into Wyoming as well.

Snowfall will pick up in intensity across the the central and southern Rockies — and across Colorado and southeastern Wyoming in particular — on Saturday night into Sunday. Snowfall rates will reach 1-3 inches per hour, and as the storm continues, strong winds will blow as well.

Blizzard criteria — three-straight hours of sustained winds or frequent gusts of 35 mph and visibility of a quarter of a mile or less in snow or blowing snow — will be approached in the region, according to Rayno. Gusts could reach as high as 30 mph as the snowstorm first gets underway on Saturday then increase to as high as 40 mph Saturday night and up to 50 mph on Sunday.

Travel impacts from the weather are all but certain. Roadways such as “I-25 and I-80 may get shut down late Saturday into Sunday,” Rayno said.

Records to Beat

Storm Arrival Projections

Please do not go out in this blizzard. You could be stranded in your car for a long time.

Make other plans if you need to be somewhere.

On the plus side, precipitation is badly needed in many areas, Hopefully this storm will do the trick.

If you live in the mountain west and don’t expect a monster snowstorm once in awhile then you need to move.

Whatever.
Even 1 meter of snow will melt away in a few days. It is March.
Daylight Saving Time will bring even more hours of sunshine.

I wonder why they didn’t just activate daylight savings time in Texas to keep the pipes from freezing. More government ineptitude!

Daylight saving time all year would suit me fine. I like my winter sunshine AFTER work, not before.

That isn’t how daylight savings time works – allow me to clarify with financial jargon.

By springing forward you appear to increase and back-load your solar input during the prime waking/heating hours of the day, but in reality it is just an accounting gimmick and there is no actual increase in solar gain. Extra daylight is neither saved nor created, you have just applied a seasonal adjustment to your time-keeping devices. There is no fee for this service, unless you are raising a young child, in which case you may pay a significant penalty for withdrawal when the annualized return to Standard Time occurs, as youth tend to start their day on an internal clock that has yet to acquire an ability to reset. In this case, a consultant might suggest managing the risk by spreading the 60 minute dislocation over a period of 7-14 days prior to that transaction.

I’ve driven down from Brackenridge to Denver and on down to Texas when there was nobody on the road but the semis….after being snowed in up there for days. Not something I enjoyed or would recommend. Glad the winter is over in Austin….maybe, hopefully…..hehehe.

Hope everybody stays safe. At least Coloradans are used to snow.

Breckenridge

Thanks, yes, Breckenridge.

A common misspelling for Texans, where the name Brackenridge is still on a lot of things here, although the great man and his railroads are long gone.

I’ve skied Breckenridge many times and should know better. It’s been more than 20 years though. That trip we got snowed in must have been in the mid-90’s. Van full of kids, no 4WD. No chains. Just luck and pluck got us home. I’ve always been lucky.

Lived in Denver for many years, March is statistically the snowiest month there but you never know what to expect.

It’s a nice place to live but the weather bounces around like nobody’s business.

Driving through a Mountain snow storm is challenging enough.
Getting stuck for 8 hours for accident clean up is big time STRESS.

Is a “monster blizzard” anything like a “SharkNado”?

Meanwhile I’m up at the Canadian border preparing to go out kayaking on a warm sunny day.

The world is all higgledy piggledy.

It’s not overcast in Seattle? That’s rare.

Been sunny the last 2 weeks, and off and on all winter. I’ve only been up here off and on for 5 years, but it does feel different this year.
