Attacks on Desalination Plants Make Water a New Issue in the War With Iran

Let’s discuss more repercussions of a foolish war with Iran surface.

Water Is Now a Key Issue

The Wall Street Journal reports Attacks on Desalination Drag Water Supplies Into the War With Iran

An Iranian drone attack damaged a desalination plant in Bahrain, bringing the war to the oil-rich Persian Gulf’s most strategic resource: drinking water.

The attack did material damage, the Gulf state’s Interior Ministry said Sunday. Iran hadn’t addressed the attack, but a day earlier Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the U.S. had attacked an Iranian desalination plant on the Gulf island of Qeshm. “The U.S. set this precedent, not Iran,” Araghchi said on social media.

A spokesman for the U.S. Central Command, which is responsible for the Middle East, denied that the military hit a desalination plant in Iran.

With desalination plants, the set of infrastructure targets being struck in the war has expanded, marking a new and dangerous escalation in a region where many countries have limited onshore sources of fresh water.

The Middle East’s abundant desalination plants, which remove salt from the Persian Gulf’s seawater, are the key source of drinking water for millions of residents in the arid region.

“It’s really going for the jugular, and in a major way,” said Hussein Ibish, a senior resident scholar at the Arab Gulf States Institute, a Washington think tank. “These desalination plants, even more than the energy infrastructure of the Gulf monarchies, are their Achilles’ heel.”

The Middle East accounts for more than 40% of the world’s desalination capacity, with around 5,000 plants feeding its water systems.

Bahrain, where the drone strike occurred, is almost completely dependent on its plants for drinking water for its population of 1.6 million. Israel depends on the plants for about 80% of its drinkable water. About 90% of Kuwait’s water needs are met by desalination.

US May Have Started This

Water Could Decide the Middle East’s Fate

Bloomberg reports In the Iran War, Water Could Decide the Middle East’s Fate

The CIA calls it the “strategic commodity” of the Middle East. But it’s not referring to oil or natural gas. What the American spy agency has in mind is far more prosaic: drinking water. Don’t underestimate it, though, because if military hostilities continue to escalate, water could become the geopolitical commodity that decides the war between the US and Iran.

The US Central Intelligence Agency has been briefing American policymakers for decades on the inherent risk of relying on those plants for such a crucial supply. In a secret assessment in the early 1980s — since declassified — the CIA said: “Senior government officials in some of the countries perceive it [water] as more important than oil to the national well-being.”

About 100 million people live in the countries belonging to the Gulf Cooperation Council — Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Oman — all now under Iranian attack. Kuwait, Qatar and the UAE are, for all practical purposes, completely dependent on the desalination plants, particularly for metropolises such as Dubai. Saudi Arabia, and especially its capital, Riyadh, also relies heavily on them.

Under international law, the desalination plants are protected. But I have seen enough Middle Eastern wars to know the weight of the Geneva Conventions when missiles and bombs start flying. And they are: Iran has attacked a power station in Fujairah, UAE that keeps one of the world’s largest desalination plants running. In Kuwait, debris from a drone interception caused a fire in one of the country’s plants.

The risk is enormous. Take the Jubail desalination plant, located on the Persian Gulf coast of Saudi Arabia. It supplies Riyadh, via a roughly 500-kilometer-long pipeline system, with more than 90% of its drinking water. “Riyadh would have to evacuate within a week if the plant, its pipelines, or associated power infrastructure were seriously damaged or destroyed,” according to a 2008 memo from the US embassy in the kingdom released by Wikileaks.

Still, Iran doesn’t have many options to prevail. Militarily, it cannot escalate against the combined Israeli-American war machine. Its only options are hunker down, in the hope that a long-lasting conflict becomes economically too painful for its enemies, or go after so-called soft targets like energy sites, airports and water installations. From its actions, it’s clear the Islamic Republic has chosen to hit soft targets and hunker down, hoping to outlast the assault. Ultimately, the Islamic Republic sees surviving as winning — even if victory comes with immense losses.

UAE, Central Israel Hit With Missile Attacks

Bloomberg reports UAE, Central Israel Hit With Missile Attacks

The UnitedNations World Food Programme has warned that surging food and fuel prices caused by the conflict in the Middle East will push vulnerable populations in the region and beyond closer towards severe food insecurity.

The escalating supply chain pressures impacting fertilizers, oil and energy are increasing costs for WFP’s operations. Longer transit times are also delaying humanitarian deliveries.

US Tries to Pass the Buck on Rising Gas Prices

US Energy Secretary Chris Wright said any missile strikes on Iranian oil refineries or other infrastructure would be the work of the Israeli military, not the US.

“We have no plans to target” the Iranian oil industry, Wright said on CNN’s State of the Union. “This must be Israel.”

Nightmare Scenario

Daniel Yergin, vice chairman of S&P Global, says the world is facing what could become the “nightmare scenario” for global energy markets if the Middle East conflict drags on.

Speaking on Bloomberg This Weekend, Yergin pointed to the unprecedented disruption. While oil prices have surged above $90 per barrel, he believes we’re not yet at the worst-case scenario.

“The nightmare scenario would be a war that goes on a long time, a disruption that goes on a long time. Prices really skyrocketing — 90 is high, but it’s not skyrocketing — with major impacts on financial markets and ultimately the world economy plummeting into a recession.”

Among many other things, the Trump administration forgot to factor in water.

Dear president Trump, you forgot to note, Iran isn’t Venezuela.

I think the regime change boogie gonna be dancing all over the Gulf. Needs to dance on over to Washington and Tel Aviv, too. When governments cause more net loss than gain, its time for them to go. Since it’s only dictatorships were talking about, probably ain’t gonna hapoen at the ballot box.

Of course the US started the “water wars”, a war crime. The only question is “how could they be soooo stooopid?” Some simple statistics: desalination plants (easily disabled) provide just 3% of Iran’s water supply. By comparison, Bahrain relies 100% on desalination plants; UAE is 90%; Qatar is 40 – 50%; Saudi Arabia, “the big kahuna”, is 50%. Riyadh depends upon desalination for about 62% of its municipal water supply. Riyadh is a city of 7 million people. The US has declared open season on desalination plants. Brilliant…just freakin’ brilliant!

Only the Trump, Hegseth duo and their media sponsor Fox News/Newscorp could be complicit and evil enough to destroy the water supplies of people in the desert and expose our allies to the reciprocal acts of a desperate enemy.

I do not like either side of this disgusting war. Particularly Israel which has been attacking its neighbors since Balfour in 1917.

WTF!

Unfortunately there are now many countries relying on desalination plants to supply the population. A population too large for the natural resources and water supply. Desal plants are highly energy dependent – when the cost of that energy supply rises then that’s a threat to the population the government must urgently address. A loss of that energy supply and then you have real issues controlling the population.
Singapore- that great financial hub, relies on expensive desalination plus a puny water pipe which comes from Malaysia.

No. The strikes on Iranian combat planes have been largely confined to the Western part of Iran.

What are the Iranians saving these planes for? Round two? To carry their enriched uranium to Russia for safe keeping? So a few of the leadership can escape to Russia before they are torn apart?

I suspect Iran is reserving future attacks on GCC oil infrastructure for later rounds of escalation. Closure of Hormuz accomplishes Iran’s goal of disabling much oil and LNG production for now. All the GCC States (and Israel) surely understand that the water desalination plants are targets which effectively constrains them.

The key for both sides is “escalation management.” If so, attacks may continue but at a lower baseline level for a while. This is to Iran’s advantage because Israel can’t last in a long war. The key to defeating Israel is: don’t over-react, be nimble, let the enemy exhaust themselves, then attack when the time is right. It worked for Mohammed Ali.

Your view is too narrow.
Iran can’t win against mighty American militarily.
The only Iran can inflict immense pressure on US is by economic pain.
That’s why disruption of oil business including block of Hormuz is essential.
Military bases around Iran and its recipients are targets.
These recipients are too rich and supporters of US economy as well
must be disconnected. Bombing desalination is part of that project.

Classic Bastiat’s Broken Window – the world will NOT benefit from this.

The Oil refining capacity and lost oil is not just lost to Iran; but lost to the people of the World. Millions of years of time / energy that went into creating the oil is gone. It is now pollution and atmospheric poison. It is obvious that South Korea got wind of what was going to happen when their market collapsed 18% in 2 days.

I am sure that other insiders that knew this was coming made a fortune on Polymarket.

How can Iran’s populace remain stable and secure without their ability to create wealth through sales of Oil? We are punishing the very people we ostensibly are “liberating.” Iran has a proud history of accomplishment in Math and Science and was way ahead of dark ages Europe for many centuries.

The US will make the Iranian’s hate the West more again and will it lead to another hostage crisis, terrorism, and perhaps false flag terrorism to mold and shape a domestic police state.

Destroying water plants (soft easy targets) will only hurt the most downtrodden people in the Middle East not help the Iranians make a stable long term regime change.

Israel is going to reap what it has sown. Israel is lucky now that the split among the Sunni’s and Shia’s is allowing the other Gulf States opportunity to crush a potential future enemy…so they accept (for the moment) the costly losses they are taking.

The next US Administration will just allow the region’s refugees to fill the US country with a religion that is not compatible with that practiced in the West, as much as I respect the people of the world – preaching of radical death to the unbeliever will never work – https://www.politico.eu/article/macron-france-islam-separatism/ …ever.

Sun Tzu is watching and laughing. China and Russia are the winner in this game. Makes one wonder….

The US like Russia of the 80’s – about to collapse under the weight of the increasing debt load. Say good bye to Social Security, stability, civility and safety of the post WW II era

This is actually a good point. Without oil, Iran has little else in resources to sell to the world to support its ever growing population. One nuclear fusion becomes a commercial reality in 10 years or so, the need for oil will decline steeply. What will oil states with large populations, like Iran, do then?

“Destroying water plants (soft easy targets) will only hurt the most downtrodden people in the Middle East not help the Iranians make a stable long term regime change.”

It will motivate (hopefullY) those against the Regime to action. . Humans can only survive about 3 days w/o water.

This means the war is reaching the end game fast which is good news for the rest of the world that runs on that oil. Bad news of course for civilian populations there.

I’m still surprised how many people think is OK for Iran to be targeting other countries in the middle east besides Israel. Essentially they are confirming everything the US / Israel has said about Iran (it’s a dangerous rogue state) and making them appear like a rabid dog snapping at everyone within reach and that always ends with the dog having to be put down (note that Ukraine hasn’t fired missiles into European neighbors when they don’t do as Ukraine wants – more guns/planes/missiles or help attack Russia etc).

They aren’t doing that. They are only targeting middle eastern countries that house US bases or are being used by the US to launch attacks. That of course is Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain and the UAE. “This means the war is reaching the end game fast which is good news for the rest of the world that runs on that oil.”

What is now in play is a complete realignment of the Middle East. Iran has pretty much demolished all US bases along with multiple billion dollar radar systems. The states are now redirecting all equipment to Israel bypassing the sheikdoms.

I would guess this is now the reason for the panic in getting aircraft carriers as the US bases are now easy pickings for the Iranians.

Saudi Arabia had to hold down uprisings in Bahrain the last time and Bahrain may be the first domino to fall.

Also the US short of missiles, radars, etc is now pulling equipment from the rest of the world etc. South Korea.

At the very least, many nations will now assess US backing.

The end game approaching may be all US influence in the Middle East. All Americans are advised to leave including diplomats. The only thing American of any substance may be aircraft carriers. Anything American is subject to attack including the the corporate companies.

Of course it remains to be seen how this plays out, but Trump has truly f’d up. Somehow I believe that you believe all the hot air coming out of his mouth is true.

I also seem to recollect that you believed that tariffs would enable Americans to quit paying income taxes. lol

Bibi and Trump thought they had an opportunity to exploit instability in the Iran regime after exploiting largely initially peaceful protests in Iran that spiraled with U.S. and Israel’s help into killing police. The Iranians then used force to kill and arrest 1,000’s of Iranians and infiltrators.

The ensuing attack by the U.S. and Israel has turned out to be a massive miscalculation. Got oil?

Worse than that, the US created the protests through its economic war on Iran. Bessent 2026 – “President Trump ordered Treasury and our OFAC division, Office of Foreign Asset Control, to put maximum pressure on Iran. And it’s worked, because in December, their economy collapsed. We saw a major bank go under; the central bank has started to print money. There is dollar shortage. They are not able to get imports, and this is why the people took to the street.”

This is immoral behavior on our part.

Saw a You Tube video that said Bahrain uses 4,000% of water. Believe Iran was at 90. Recommended is 10% of 100 so anything over 100 is bad, more than the environment can produce. “some of the countries perceive it [water] as more important than oil to the national well-being.” That is a false dichotomy since desalination is very energy-intensive and thus only practical in places with an abundant supply of cheap energy, like the Gulf. If the energy infrastructure is sufficiently deteriorated it will have a knock-on effect on desalination plants.

Attacking a country that is not a threat to us without any plan or strategy for victory is idiotic to the point of insanity. Trump now claims three objectives in Iran: (1) stop nuclear weapons from being developed; (2) eliminate Iran’s ballistic missiles; and (3) stop the country’s support of other groups in the Middle East that oppose Israel. There is no way to accomplish any of these goals by bombing the country from the skies. Troops on the ground are necessary if this is the real goal. Either Trump pulls out and declares victory, or this will be a protracted war with ground troops. This war is costing billions of dollars a day.

I see no scenario in which America is better off when this war ends than it was before it started.

The US has no power over any of those 3 things. If you know how to build nuclear weapons and have the determination to do so, you can do it. If you know how to build a ballistic missile and have the determination to do so, you can do it. If they want to support people who oppose Israeli aggression and terrorism, how are you going to stop them? The best the US can do set them back a few years. But war will just make their determination stronger.

If Iran can set up an underground bunker from which the Ayatollah repeatedly addresses the nation, it could be effective at boosting morale. That is exactly what Zelenskyy did after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Most of Iran people hate Iran’s Islamic Theocracy! The few that support it are, as usual, those who benefit from it, either through family relationships, employment or other connections.

Is the publicized deployment of the nuke-capable B1 to the region a “this or that” opening to get Iran to turn over their 400kg of higher enriched uranium?

Enquiring minds want to know

Many not happy about the prospect of fighting the Iranians in their underground nuclear facilities

Spain’s “no nuclear weapons” policy is the reason why the deployment of the bomber to England instead of Spain

Fighting Iran about how they are too irresponsible to have an imaginary nuke;
US decides to use real nuke ?

The height of logic.

Presumable end result?
Iran will finally tack and repeal the “nukes are unIslamic” doctrine

We took over the Soviets’ role as Evil Empire. Yes, Iran should have acquired nukes a long time ago. Hope they do soon.

“The U.S. set this precedent, not Iran,” Araghchi said on social media.

It was a dreadful mistake. They thought the building housed an elementary school.

Now that more documents are released that implicate Trump directly for having sexually abused a minor age girl, I think Trump has got his “very good reason” to send in foot soldiers. Anything to distract!

BTW – Russia is lauging all the way to the bank, and doing so while helping Iran with intelligence. But Trump will let Putin get away with anything.

Yes. And to attack elementary school girls.

They are after all the root of this problems.

It’s not a matter of “letting” Putin get away with anything. Last I checked Russia just bumped their troop count up to 2 1/2 million, it makes their military size ranked by number of troops double the size of the US and 3 biggest western Europe armies combined. The top three Western European countries couldn’t even put together an army as big as the United States Marine Corps. And we are not even discussing Russian largest in the world nuclear asset stockpiles.

At a congressional briefing Tuesday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio was asked whether Iran’s enriched uranium would be secured. “People are going to have to go and get it,” he said, without specifying who.

  • An Israeli defense official said Trump and his team are seriously considering sending special operations units into Iran for specific missions.
  • A U.S. official said the administration has discussed two options: removing the material from Iran entirely, or bringing in nuclear experts to dilute it on-site.
  • The mission would likely involve special operators alongside scientists, possibly from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

A humanitarian disaster is unfolding. Tens of millions of refugees will flood Europe and the US.

Trump launched an unconstitutional and illegal war and should be impeached and convicted and removed from office.

He and Bibi should then be tried for war crimes because there is no doubt they are war criminals.

Israel may convict Netanyahoo of corruption, but there is no way they will even charge him with war crimes. The genocide he committed in Gaza was overwhelmingly supported by the Israeli public.

BTW, When this war started, word was that Netanyahu flew to Berlin. If true, as a signatory to the ICC, Germany should have arrested him as an indicted war criminal. More evidence that the Europeons (esp Germany) are toothless and full of shit.

Syria’s less radical leader? You mean the guy who now calls himself Ahmed al-Sharaa, the former Al-Qaeda leader on whose head the US had placed a $10 million bounty?

How about the military blowing up boats in the water ?
How about the CIA guys fomenting all this mayhem in virtually every country around the globe?
How about George Bush and all the others?
How about the media clapping like seals?

The country is full of people who have committed war crimes.
Remember Curtis Lemay who wrote that it is a good thing we won the war, otherwise we would all be hung as war criminals (Korea, ww2)

Yes, the US has a history of war crimes. I am not denying that at all. And those past war criminals should have been held to account. Because they weren’t that does not mean Trump should not be held to account.
