The National Guard has been called out in several states as a bombogenesis or bomb cyclone makes its way up the East coast of the US.
“it is not the lowest pressure that defines bombogenisis but rather how quickly the pressure within the storm plummets. When the barometric pressure falls at least 0.71 of an inch (24 millibars) in 24 hours, a storm has undergone bombogenesis.”
Record High Tide
Record or near-record high tides accompanied the cyclone causing severe coastal flooding. Over 4,000 flights have been canceled. Newark and LaGuardia account for about half the total.

CBS News reports Massive Winter Storm Slams East Coast With Snow, Strong Winds.
A massive winter storm roared into the East Coast on Thursday, threatening to dump as much as 18 inches of snow from the Carolinas to Maine and unleashing hurricane-force winds and flooding that closed schools and offices and halted transportation systems. Forecasters expected the storm to be followed immediately by a blast of face-stinging cold air that could break records in more than two dozen cities and bring wind chills as low as minus 40 this weekend.
The massive storm began two days ago in the Gulf of Mexico, first hitting the Florida Panhandle. It has prompted thousands of canceled flights and shuttered schools and businesses. The high winds caused coastal flooding from Massachusetts to Maine, and the rising waters stranded people in homes and cars.
Blizzard warnings and states of emergency were in wide effect, and wind gusts hit more than 70 mph in some places. Eastern Massachusetts and most of Rhode Island braced for snow falling as fast as 3 inches per hour.
It seems like we had it very bad her over the past few week. Temperatures at night were as low as -8 degrees with wind chills much lower.
However, we have not had much snow and no flooding.
On Sunday we are supposed to hit a balmy 28 degrees. Until then daytime temperatures are not supposed to get above 11 and night-time temperatures will be as low as -9.
If you have air travel plans expect lengthy delays.
Stay warm everybody!

The global cooling they taught us about in the 70’s is finally here
Kidhorn Not that many years back, climate alarmists were telling us that winters would be warmer and less snowy. Now they claim warming is responsible for this record frigid weather. However, polar vortexes are nothing new. Arctic fronts plunged down into New York State in the 1960’s when i was a kid. Maps of the glaciers show them furthest south in eastern North America, which is consistent with the current jet stream pattern.
Global warming may explain the weather. The northern pacific is warm(http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/sst/anomaly/2018/anomp.1.4.2018.gif). warm water causes the air above it to warm. Warm air causes high pressure. A stubborn high over the northern pacific has forced warm air up into Alaska and forced cold air down into the eastern US. Until the pacific cools down from last years el nino, theses kind of systems will be more prevalent. A warmer Alaska and a cooler eastern US. The cold dense air from the arctic mixing with the warmer less dense air over the atlantic spawned the storm.
The climate has always been wrong somewhere. That is nothing new. How many people live in Canada? How many in Antarctica? The little Ice age was at the lower range of global temperature of the last 10,000 years. We are still below the median temperature.
Cold weather in January. Absolutely shocking!
“Meanwhile record high temperatures for Holland and the barrier reef in Australia is dying from rising water temperatures. If you’ve never travelled or keep your eyes closed its easy to think there’s nothing really wrong with the climate.”
So I don’t recall it getting below freezing, day or night, here in central Florida for years. Lots of people have begun planting royal palms in their yards which used to grow only in South Florida. It was freaking cold yesterday. There’s a news story about frozen iguanas falling out of trees in Boca. I recently read of this thing called a “coat”. I’m of fun to buy one.
Unfortunately I lived for many years near where Mish lives, and I remember 20 below zero mornings and months when it never got above freezing. Back then people didn’t make a big deal of it; they didn’t give the storms names, they just called it “winter”.
During the Medieval Warm Period, the Chinese expanded their agriculture hundreds of miles further north, the Vikings farmed in Greenland and the Labrador Coast, and Europe experienced a period of rapid growth and surpluses. I guess that global warming stuff is dangerous.
Meanwhile record high temperatures for Holland and the barrier reef in Australia is dying from rising water temperatures. If you’ve never travelled or keep your eyes closed its easy to think there’s nothing really wrong with the climate. Just like its easy for some people to believe the world economy is doing just fine.
I don’t see Al Gore making a statement yet, but it’s all about climate change now that the warming has been eliminated.
I drove from the DC area to eastern NC today on I-95. There was snow on the ground but little on the road. It’s a litte warmer here than it was it Maryland where temperatures are expected to hover just above zero Saturday morning and reach 18 degrees in the afternoon. By then I expect to be on I-10 heading west along the gulf coast.
Now remember. Even though it is much colder, it is still the fault of global cooling…I mean warming. I mean climate change. And no matter what, the ONLY solution is bigger and bigger government, more and more regulations and higher and higher taxes.
