Redirecting existing childcare subsidies from working parents (mostly single moms) to pay married stay-at-home spouses creates a new federal entitlement without new funding.
It favors one family model via taxpayer money, risks reducing care slots and raising costs for those who must work, and invites future expansion by both parties.
Better to cut taxes and regulations so more families can afford their own choices.
I’m all for new funding to support the early years of childhood development up to a certain age for up to two kids (replacement ratio), with incentives to send kids to school and get an education (free lunch for all, outcome based teacher reviews, etc.) No long term support for keeping kids at home and pop out many just for the aid.
Ain’t what both the pro-life and the Dems want? Supporting kids pre and post birth?
It does strike me as unfair that Moms who farm out their kids are sponsored by the State, but if they stay home, it’s on them.
I remember when it was supposed to be a great thing that Moms were free to go out and work. More and more it seems they are now forced to; the State even sponsors you if you do.
This is all very crooked, and I don’t favor this program.
But blocking the program is hardly a stand against socialism.
Woman in the workforce started in WWII. Once that line was crossed, it continued to expand as those woman working brought home more money, which allowed their families to upscale their lifestyles. They could buy a bigger house. Buy a 2nd car. Take a vacation, or two.
Of course, once striving to exceed the norm of the times, became embedded in society, woman working was no longer optional and became mandatory, for otherwise their families would not be able to keep up with the Joneses.
Then decades on with programs like ‘Keeping Up With the Rich and Famous’ and successful entertainer voyeurism, there is no way to go back w/o government or somebody making up for the lost income when the woman stops working.
That is what this proposal is about.
It’s not just upscaling.
Once people with double incomes are competing for the same goods (like houses), the prices goes up (including assessed taxes and government programs to mitigate the fall-out) and the old life-style is no longer available, even if you would be perfectly content with not upscaling.
While I commend almost any young folks procreating these days, this proposal reeks. It seems more sensical to me to support lower income and often single parents without “stay at home” language.
On another note, I’d like to see mid and larger employers consider offering some form of “at/near work” childcare as an employment incentive.
Single parents and lower income people are unsuccessful by definition.

And yes, you can also apply this logic to all the food and aid handouts made to the poor worldwide.

Mish, in all your arguments, you simply ignore the fact that the Defense budget is 3.5% of GDP while the Health Care part of the budget is 18% of GDP. Together, Medicare and Medicaid are a $2 trillion a year hit to the treasury, more than double the defense budget. So while your “MAGA Agenda” list includes all sorts of items, you’re ignoring the biggest problem in the room. BTW, Trump did cut 300,000 federal workers partially through DOGE, but it hasn’t made a difference. This could apply in other areas as well. Kids are expensive, and many don’t have them for that reason alone. Yet they are stuck paying for others. The final straw was Blinken telling Lavrov in January 2022 the US reserved the right to station nuclear weapons in Ukraine. It took decades for the US to gin it up, culminating in January 2022, when Antony Blinken told Lavrov that – contrary to Biden’s assurance over the phone to Putin a mere month earlier – the US would not forswear putting nuclear weapons into a NATO-aligned Ukraine. Moreover, when the US vetoed the peace agreement that was all-but concluded in April of 2022 (which would have left Donbas in Ukraine), it proved conclusively that war between Russia and the Ukraine was the American goal all along.

That’s when and where Blinken repudiated Biden’s verbal assurance to Putin that no nukes would be stationed in the Ukraine. Lavrov made this public and Blinken has never denied it – and never could, since it’s obviously in keeping with Blinken’s absolutist opinions about all things Ukraine/Russia and he was defacto president on these things, Biden having been senile already.

I’m far from well-connected, but I don’t find it “criminal” at all that I am required to pay taxes for roads that I travel on to a workplace, or to pay for the police officers that protect me from roaming marauders on the way to my personal work.
I’m not saying that some government isn’t a necessary evil. I like gasoline taxes as a user tax paying for the roads. And I appreciate the police, though they catch and prosecute tiny percentages of perpetrators, and during BLM were on the side of the criminals.
But the fact is that most of what govt does is not roads, schools (mostly bad), and protection from violence, fraud, and pollution. Most govt’s budget is not those basic things that initially justified the creation of govt. And the more poorly govt does its legitimate functions, the more it wants to expand into all manner of issues, like paying parents to stay home with a child…and then later paying for the child’s castration..and then subsequent mental health treatment for life.
69% of the Federal government budget is transfer payments, taking money from people who earn it and giving it to others. Never mind bureaucrats, NGOs, and contractors who mostly waste the loot. My generalization isn’t really an exaggeration. The Mafia managed to occasionally do good too.

It absolutely is, but I’m fine with that as a stopgap while we root the rest of it out. The reality is that letting corporations off their leash in the 80s has resulted in generational ruin and flight of money out of the US. Market liberalism (aka Reagan “conservatism”) has established a corporate socialist system that unlike China’s, exists only to funnel money to a select ultra-rich elite club who all seem to rape kids.
Undoing that system will take time, but I’d like to see something done even if it is a bandaid because we only have so long before demographic death turns us into Korea 2.0 and forces us to beg for immigration. Also it wouldn’t be another huge handout since it’d be more than paid for with a proper gutting of the military. Calling it a handout pretends it’s not everyone’s money to begin with. It didn’t spawn in a government account, we all paid into it. I think we all deserve to have it put towards things like being able to afford kids as opposed to another middle eastern holocaust brought to you by Lockheed Martin.
The human species, planetwide, and regardless of political system, has rightly sensed it has overshot optimal population density, and is ruining the wonder and uniqueness of this place, in favor of crowded, hot, polluted squalor. I don’t think it’s really something anyone would disagree on at this point. Americans of all political stripes need to ask why we keep getting pitted into racism, xenophobia, and culture war tribalism while the Epstein island monsters roam free and we get robbed.

Including whatever they choose to have, be it children, cars, vacations, etc.? People now seem to want it all though their financial state does not justify it. They want government to absorb all their risks and losses, yet top them off so they can keep blithely reproducing, vacationing, conspicuously consuming, etc. They want to engage in risky behavior with a public insurance policy built in. But they won’t, and can’t, pay for that, fund that sort of system, actuarially, as it should be. hence, deficit, debt. They keep the upside, but the public eats the downside. Which is basically crazy and selfish. Isn’t that true?
