Or will the party base be seduced by radicals like New York City’s Zohran Mamdani?
Gov.-elect Abigail Spanberger won her race in Virginia in a rout over GOP Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears. Assuming Democrats also retain the state House of Delegates, they’ll have unified political control in Richmond. Will Ms. Spanberger now forsake her pledges of moderation, such as saying she won’t repeal the state’s right-to-work law?
In New Jersey, some polls predicted a close contest, but Democratic Gov.-elect Mikie Sherrill won with ease.
Virginia and New Jersey were always going to be uphill races for Republicans, since these odd-year gubernatorial elections sometimes go against the party in the White House. The GOP won both states in 2009 and Virginia in 2021, under Presidents Obama and Biden. This time Democrats had the advantage of rallying voters upset at President Trump. Exit polls showed Mr. Trump’s approval rating at 44% in New Jersey and 42% in Virginia. The era of MAGA triumphalism should be over.
The potential silver lining for the country in Tuesday’s results—small comfort to anyone paying New Jersey taxes—is that Democrats can see a model of electoral success that isn’t rooted in radicalism. After her party fell short in 2020, Ms. Spanberger vented to House colleagues: “We need to not ever use the words ‘socialist’ or ‘socialism’ ever again.”

The GOP is aimless and corrupt. So is the Democratic party. George Washington was right about the harm and danger of partisan politics. But the American people demand a “leader” and the parties happily provide a choice of one.

From my seat in the peanut gallery, I see fractures in both major parties. The Republican side has always had perforations with the libertarians, but the first notable mainline split in recent times was the Tea Party carve-out in 2009. Now, the Republicans are split between MAGA and non-MAGA, with Trump actively campaigning against non-MAGA R’s like Rand Paul and Thomas Massie.
Democrats are suffering from an age problem even more than Republicans (if that’s possible) with the ‘old guard’ like Pelosi and Schumer not stepping aside – or probably more accurately, staying put to mitigate a leadership vacuum beneath them. Democrats are the party of Joe Biden and Dianne Feinstein, but at the same time, “The Squad.” The old guard Democrats are more traditional, which is a split with the younger Democrats who tend to be more progressive or even democrat socialist. The rift between Pelosi and Ocasio-Cortez is a well-documented example.
One of the more ironic things is that views of Israel are splitting both parties. Both parties have their neocons (R – Graham, D – Blumenthal) who are blind supporters of Israel and will pressure for more weapons no matter what. Democrats are being split by the pro-Palestinian contingent. Republicans are split by evangelical Christians (largely Boomers) who view the US’s support for Israel as being biblically-based. Both parties are also split between people who want peace and those who think war (or ethnic cleansing or genocide depending on one’s view) is justified.
In both parties, the extreme politicians get the attention (example: Mamdani) and therefore the most media and funding. But our country is screaming for a moderate leader or third-party candidate who authentically cares about the welfare of Americans and who would govern to that end. Unfortunately, any candidate who isn’t in their party’s extreme camp is attacked from within their own party as well as the opposing party. Non-extreme candidates are criticized as soft. Both sides say the answer to the extreme division in our country is more discussion and debate. But then candidates refuse to debate or go on the offensive to criticize things said in discussions. The gerrymandering wars between Texas, California, and other states is just more evidence that our country is fractured. The only hope for repair is for politicians to rise above the partisanship and to actually govern for the welfare of all Americans. But sadly, this is the type of candidate who faces more headwinds and barriers to rising to the national stage. Exit strategy indeed!
