Department of Defense Shares Classified War Plan Details With Journalist

The most striking aspect is the MAGA denial and hypocrisy.

Texts to Reporters on Yemen Military Strike

Atlantic editor Jeffrey Goldberg reports The Trump Administration Accidentally Texted Me Its War Plans

U.S. national-security leaders included me in a group chat about upcoming military strikes in Yemen. I didn’t think it could be real. Then the bombs started falling.

I, however, knew two hours before the first bombs exploded that the attack might be coming. The reason I knew this is that Pete Hegseth, the secretary of defense, had texted me the war plan at 11:44 a.m. The plan included precise information about weapons packages, targets, and timing.

This is going to require some explaining.

The Wall Street Journal reports Top Trump Officials Debated War Plans on Unclassified Chat Shared With Journalist

Senior Trump administration national-security officials held detailed discussions of highly classified U.S. plans to launch airstrikes against Yemen’s Houthi militants using a commercial messaging service and mistakenly included a journalist in the conversation, U.S. officials said Monday.

The chats over the Signal encrypted messaging service spanned days and included specific information about weapons, targets and timing used in the attack, according to the Atlantic magazine, whose editor, Jeffrey Goldberg, was inadvertently included in the discussion and who disclosed the texts.

Vice President JD Vance was skeptical of the need to strike the Houthis. Little U.S. trade passed through the Suez Canal, the maritime thorough way connecting the Red Sea to the Mediterranean, whereas “40 percent of European trade does.”

Attacking the militants, Vance argued, would benefit Europe far more than the U.S. and might lead to a spike in oil prices. “I am not sure the president is aware how inconsistent this is with his message on Europe right now,” he said. While he would support the consensus of the top officials in the chat, Vance said, “I just hate bailing Europe out again.” [Inconsistent messaging, hmm no one could possibly have thought that]

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and an account with the initial S.M., apparently the initials of senior White House aide Stephen Miller, agreed with Vance’s criticism of Europe.

“It’s PATHETIC,” Hegseth said, though he recommended moving forward with the strikes instead of delaying the attack another month, as Vance suggested. The debate about the attack could leak, making the administration appear “indecisive,” or that Israel would decide to strike first, Hegseth said.

National Security Council spokesman Brian Hughes confirmed the authenticity of the chat in a statement to The Wall Street Journal. He didn’t respond to questions about whether the chat ran afoul of legal procedures for handling classified information.

“I never sent any classified information on anything other than a secure U.S. government system. There is no justification whatsoever—none—to use any nongovernmental system,” said John Bolton, Trump’s third national-security adviser during the president’s first term. “This is appalling.”  [Expect Trump supporters to attack Bolton instead of focusing on the message]

Hegseth, speaking to reporters in Hawaii Monday, criticized Goldberg as “discredited” and said that “nobody was texting war plans and that’s all I have to say about that.” [Ah yes, attack the person you sent the texts to as “discredited]

According to the Atlantic article, Hegseth pushed back on delaying the operation by a month, in part out of fear a potential leak would make the administration look “indecisive.” Two hours before the strikes began, Hegseth sent the group sensitive information about the strike plan, including “weapons packages, targets, and timing,” the magazine said.

Goldberg wrote that he was initially dubious that the Signal chat group he was mistakenly invited to join was authentic. “I didn’t think it could be real. Then the bombs started falling.”

The article didn’t include the operational details on the strike and withheld the name of a CIA official, Goldberg said.

Hegseth is Discredited

Please play this Amusing Video of Hegseth arracking Goldberg.

Hegseth made a jackass out of himself.

Here are some Texts Regarding Yemen.

Had the administration acknowledged the serious error, Hegseth would not look so stupid, and I would not be doing this post.

In this X video, Trump said he didn’t know anything about it.

How many find that credible?

Image the howls had this happened under the Biden administration.

If Goldberg actually claims he has classified information, then he should share it. The X post that Mish posted in this article is NOT classified. This is the Dems/Left looking for a scandal.

One of my observations from all of this, is that JD Vance seems to be the voice of reason – basically hesitating to think things out. I actually think he is the brains of the entire outfit. This situation is not about the leak, the Houthis, or what Donald Trump knew when asked. It is extremely alarming because the people in the administration whom the American people entrust conduct themselves in a serious and responsible manner as they perform their duties, which require strictly following all security protocols. These people lead government agencies that use safeguarded information as a matter of national security and life and death for the soldiers, operators, and sources they are responsible for preserving. Furthermore, how can these Cabinet members and senior advisors to the President ask those who report to them to strictly follow all security laws and protocols when they are having sensitive discussions on a private messaging App? Unfortunately, this is what you get when you staff your leadership positions with people who have zero or minimal experience handling classified material and working in the government in a world where strict adherence to security protocols is non-negotiable. How could the Director of the CIA, the Senior Security Advisor to the President, and the Director of National Intelligence not know better than to participate in such a discussion on a non-government unsecure messaging App? I would have even known to have everyone disconnect when the conversation turned to operational details.

Egypt, the UAE, the Saudis and other Arab navies might join together along with the US, the British and the French to protect the freedom of navigation in the Red Sea. It’s their interest – not Israel’s interest. JD Vance doesn’t get it. He is a trouble maker, a prsona non grata. That was the massage to the Atlantic.

The Houthis only resumed their missile attacks because Israel refused to allow food, water and electricity to Gaza. Israel is trying to starve the Gazans. Trump could have told Netanyahu to let the food and water through or he’s cut off from all aid. Instead he’s bombing Yemen. I don’t believe he’s decapitated Ansar Allah’s leadership. They survived years of US-funded attacks by Saudi Arabia.

Or a combination of trust, convenience, and ability to delete the record at will. Signal lets you delete a message you sent for yourself or for everyone. You can also delete the entire chat. Of course, everyone else will still have your text message unless you delete it for everyone, which again doesn’t work if someone has taken a screenshot.

Oh, this whole thing is deep in Mad Magazine, “Spy Vs. Spy” territory.

Do Signal chat groups have separate “admin” users, one of whom (absent Signal app bugs) must have added Goldberg to the group? Do Signal groups have a log of who changed what, when? Was this a test of Goldberg, and/or using him to feed disinformation to unfriendlies? Was this a test of an admin? Did Goldberg raise a warning and who would he have notified of the issue?

One might wonder how Goldberg would have been treated if it were WWII and he did not raise any red flags.

We can count on never knowing any of this.

He was in with JD Vance. Vance wrote for the Atlantic with a pseudonym.

Slowly but surely Vice President Vance’s Maga/Trump loyalist image is being built up. Color me a conspiracy nut, it looks to me that Vance is being setup to be the next president.

The betting will have to be Trump running for a 3rd term no matter what vs. Trump brushing the courts to the side and going full dictator vs Trumps family creating a monarchy and we just get one Trump after another vs JD using his billionaire connections to muscle into the top dictator spot when Donald gets sick … bets anyone?

After the beating taken by the US’ best proxy that money could buy, the untrained, the US has to come out swinging at some poor sob. Only carrier groups are such sitting ducks for hypersonic missiles…

I’m no fan of President Trump and his inexperienced officials.
But with this article, Mr. Goldberg has exposed holes in our national security.
Better he should have reported it to the Senate privately, imo.

Apparently you’re unfamiliar with Mr. Goldberg. I’ll take his side on this one, though. He’s under no obligation to cover for Trump administration ineptitude. It was good that he let the news out. There’s always the possibility that including Goldberg was not an accident.

Yes, it’s very curious. This is the last journalist anyone would have on their contact list.
