I do, but I think the practice is abused. If your country is under attack, it may be necessary to bolter the armed forces via conscription to defend it. Given that Trump thinks we are all suckers and losers if we serve in uniform (ok, ok, he only meant if we die in uniform), maybe the draft is not the worst thing in the world. I think all 18 year olds should be enrolled in the military for 2-4 years. 2 years if you don’t have a criminal record and 4 years if you have a criminal record. They shouldn’t be sent to war. No, I do not believe in that, nor I believe in terrorizing the citizenry with threats for jury duty. Both of these examples point to the fact that we are owned, and I am not okay with it. As far as the jury duty system, there are no words for my disgust at the statement that a person must go to court and “explain to the judge” why he can’t/won’t “serve”. Look at it as a way to exercise jury nullification. Jury nullification is one of the last recourses we have against unjust laws. The politicians want to pass unjust malum prohibitum laws, fine. When the state tries someone for it, we the jury vote not guilty.

As I recall, the first draft was Lincoln’s during the so called civil war to end slavery, followed up by WW1 and WW2. In comparison, the Vietnam War draft was a pimple on and 18 year old male grunt’s ass while unable to vote or drink beer, legally, during which only 10 female military personnel not subject to the draft died in the line of duty in Vietnam. Hell yeah, bring back the draft now that they can vote at 18 while packing fully automatic “assault weapons” and hand grenades, provided the Barbies are subject to that draft equality and equal KIA outcomes with the Kens–of which only 20 females in 20 years of the endless war on terror have died in theater so far. Maybe a draft would improve the current volunteer army’s suicide rate of 2126 compared to 382 for the Vietnam War period army. As a practical matter, the Vietnam War killed conscription in this country. A couple of hundred thousand (mostly privileged) men escaped to Canada, and a few hundred thousand of 1A’s in the draft pool successfully evaded the authorities internally, while larger numbers corruptly acquired medical, or other, avoidance methods (that means you Bill Clinton, Donald Trump and (most likely) George W. Bush). Jimmy Carter pardoned all of the draft dodgers but did not pardon the (generally lower income) draftees who went AWOL and were classified as deserters. Think about the incentives that Carter’s policies created for future draft eligible citizens. And our Selective Service has never had to deal with the tens of millions of females who ought to be considered draft eligible. There is no patriotic political base on which the USA could rebuild the draft.

The only well to do that I knew in the USMC were typically of the officer corps. I joined at 17. My mother was a single parent and a waitress. She simply could not feed us kids. We know there are situations in the world that near require military readiness, training, preparation. Those include South Korea with respect towards North Korea, Taiwan with respect to PR China, Israel with respect to the hostiles around it. And of course Ukraine is getting attacked right now and has been for the past two years.

Support for military draft is challenging. Studies generally indicate that popular support for martial conflict declines after conscription is made mandatory. That might be a good thing.
Less recognized is the breakdown of political parity within the armed forces under voluntary service. During mandatory enlistment, defense personnel are more evenly divided among political affiliations. The US voluntary enlistment program resulted in ranks heavily weighted toward one political party.
Perhaps better compensation would increase political parity in the volunteer forces? Certainly my preference, far ahead of forced conscription, which I oppose.

The year I was eligible to be drafted was the first year they stopped the draft for the Vietnam War. At the time I was very anti-draft. Now I have changed my tune. I think that the draft would prevent a lot of wars if there was an unconditional no exemption draft. If the sons and daughters of politicians and the wealthy had to risk their lives in a war I think the subsequent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan might have been avoided. Right now the armed forces are mostly made up of the poor who have all the risk foisted upon them.
The politicians sons would serve of the general’s staff far behind the front line. Your kid would be cannon fodder. I think your first instincts were correct.
In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. But in practice, there is.
Even if the children of the elite are drafted they will get special treatment and cushy postings.
They won’t be in the trenches getting shelled but stationed stateside or at nice overseas postings like Paris and not Mogadishu.
Everyone is owned by the banks. You may not start out that way, but a mortgage or student loan or a few credit cards later, and you are. It’s voluntary perhaps, but it’s there. You want that house or education, but you don’t have the money, so you borrow from the bank and then owe them for 30 years. And they just print the money up out of thin air, through the process known as “fractional reserve banking”, which is really just the process of using the same $1 to establish $10 worth of loans. Or $99 dollars worth of loans these days.
Conscription is arguable if the war was just and the country is in danger. After all, why should some have to fight for the country for the sake of all? But the problem is we haven’t been threatened in 200 years and haven’t fought a just war since 1945, so conscription is a no go. Since all recent wars have been mercenary in nature, the soldiers should also be mercenaries.
WW2 was not a just war. It was a stupid, murderous war that didn’t need to be fought. It was a war that killed 60 million people and turned half of Europe over to Joe Stalin. Even drunkard, art forger Winston Churchill stated after the war, “looks like we stuck the wrong pig.”

Putin is boiling after Sweden was accepted to NATO. If the US forced a military conscription he might preempt and strike Kiev and Moldova…before they joined NATO. Finland doubled the land border. Sweden the Baltic sea and the straight. Russia’s best friend is the polar bear in the arctic ocean.
NATO is a defunct organization with no good purpose. In 5 years it will probably cease to exist. Thank God for that!

In case you clowns didn’t notice, NATO has run out of weapons and is losing the Ukraine war. Russia is now militarily stronger with many of its weapons factories humming and a much larger and experienced army. 500,000 Ukrainians are dead and Ukraine, as a country, is destroyed. And for what? The whole thing was a disaster that could have been avoided. The bozos in the Biden Administration and in NATO achieved the exact opposite of what they sought to do.
But keep yucking it up as the US becomes more isolated, and loses the esteem it once had among nations. The US is not supposed to stand for endless wars and bombing Palestinian kids. But that is where we are.
Sure thing. All Ukraine had to do was capitulate to Putin’s desire to assimilate them. Why wouldn’t any reasonable country cooperate in similar circumstances?
