Don’t Fall for the Black Friday Deals, Spend More Time With Friends and Family

Welcome Change

Major retailers like Kohl’s, Target, Macy’s, Walmart, J.C. Penney, Best Buy, even Costco will be closed on Thanksgiving day but open as early as 5 a.m. or 6 a.m. on Black Friday according to BlackFriday.Com.

That’s a welcome change but it puts all the more emphasis on Black Friday.

Retailers Attempt to Lure Price-Weary Shoppers With Deep Discounts

The Chicago Tribune reports Retailers Attempt to Lure Price-Weary Shoppers With Deep Discounts

The American Girl store advertised a Black Friday early access sale at 20% off. Forever 21 was up to 70% off, American Eagle was up to 60% off, Hollister was 25% to 40% off and Aeropostale advertised price cuts of between 50% and 70% off. (For most deals, exclusions applied.)

Nearly 60% of people surveyed by research firm Numerator said they were worried about being able to afford holiday gifts. And 93% said they planned to adjust their shopping habits to afford rising prices, such as by seeking out additional sales or buying gifts for fewer people.

The Children’s Place CEO Jane Elfers said in a November earnings call. “Our customer is in a position now where they’re going to have to make choices between discretionary spending and essential spending.”

“People have asked me, ‘What’s the trend, what’s the hot trend for the holiday season?’” said Gabriella Santaniello, founder of the retail research firm A Line Partners. “Your budget is your hot trend. If a retailer runs 40% off on Black Friday, they’ll probably be 40% off on Monday.”

Mish Advice

Spend as little as possible, exchange fewer gifts or better yet cancel exchanges altogether except for the kids.

A recession is coming. The Yield Curve is the Most Inverted in Over 40 Years

Never has the yield curve inverted so much without a recession happening. Layoffs have started in tech and will spread.

So do yourself a favor and spend more time with friends and family and less on things you don’t really need.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Liberals should not engage in consumerist behavior as it has a high carbon footprint.
Conservatives should avoid shopping as they need to save money and not give it to shops that sold out industry to China. The whole Xmas season is some Satanic ritual that expects you to part with your hard-earned money. Even the kids, they are so obnoxious now and entitled sitting there pecking on the phones and opening a present.

I was in the Christmas tree shop last week and other than food itemS, almost everything is made in China. My lady friend and I decided to find a local small christmas fair/market… I dont mind paying $10 or 15$ more for someone that made it locally

Excellent advice, Mish. One year, almost 20 years ago, I decided to partake of the Black Friday festivities. I got up and stood in line at 3AM at Best Buy. By the time I got to where I needed to be in the store, they were out of the special items I wanted to buy, so I left empty handed. It was 10AM by the time I was clear of the store. I hate crowds, so I feel like I have missed nothing by having never again never darkened the doorway of any retail store on the entire weekend. For people who love crowds, and who are willing to stand it line to buy things for a small price break, go for it, but I’ll pass.

Some of your best advice of the year. Happy Thanksgiving Mish.
Except or the kids, and perhaps the elders, what is an “exchange” really anyway? Kind of just a mutual excuse to spend money so you can get something too. Mutual premeditated spending. We already are not fully honest with ourselves in too much anyway IMHO. Put some truth on the table this TDay.

I’ve been to 1 black Friday event. Just graduated from college and had taken a job in retail as they were the only ones willing to transfer me out of state. Was working in a shoe department at a large Kmart in Garland, TX. Nonstop lunacy until after the returns in January. Don’t have to tell me!

With the increased violence at stores / malls, it doesn’t matter if there is a holiday or not. I shop because I need something, not to amuse myself.

I would guess 80% fuel and manufactured item consumption is purely for gits and shiggles.
