Five Republican Senators Correctly Stand Against Trump on War Powers Act

A rare but deserved bipartisan rebuke of Trump over the administration’s use of war powers.

Trump Slams GOP Senators

The Wall Street Journal reports Trump Slams GOP Senators Over Venezuela War-Powers Vote

President Trump lashed out at five GOP senators after they sided with Democrats in advancing a motion designed to block him from taking further military action in Venezuela without explicit congressional approval.

The vote marked a rare bipartisan rebuke of the White House and underscored growing unease over the administration’s use of war powers.

The 52-47 vote on the motion came less than a week after the U.S. seized Venezuelan strongman Nicolás Maduro and his wife in a nighttime raid. Members of the Democratic caucus were joined by five Republicans in advancing the measure.

Trump blasted the GOP defectors by name in a post on Truth Social after the vote. “Republicans should be ashamed of the senators that just voted with Democrats.” He said that the lawmakers “should never be elected to office again.” He said the vote “greatly hampers” U.S. self-defense and said the law the vote invoked wasn’t constitutional.

“Meaningful checks and balances require the president’s party to stand up to and resist unconstitutional usurpations of power,” said Sen. Rand Paul (R., Ky.), the Republican co-sponsor of the legislation. He said Republicans had given too much ground to the president, abandoning “all pretense of responsibility and any semblance of duty.”

Paul was joined by GOP Sens. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Susan Collins of Maine, Todd Young of Indiana and Josh Hawley of Missouri in supporting the resolution. Sen. Steve Daines (R., Mont.) didn’t vote. Of the group, Collins is the only one up for re-election this year, defending one of the most competitive seats in the country.

The resolution required only a simple majority to advance because it is considered a privileged measure under the War Powers Act, allowing it to bypass the Senate’s usual 60-vote filibuster threshold.

“I believe invoking the War Powers Act at this moment is necessary, given the president’s comments about the possibility of ‘boots on the ground’ and a sustained engagement ‘running’ Venezuela, with which I do not agree,” Collins said.

Other Republican backers of the resolution echoed those sentiments.

“If this was fundamentally a military operation about changing a government, that sounds a lot like war,” Hawley told reporters. “That’s something Congress would need to authorize.”

In December, a resolution brought by Rep. Jim McGovern (D., Mass.) directing the removal of U.S. forces from unauthorized hostilities in Venezuela fell just two votes short after a small bloc of Republicans broke with party leadership. McGovern is set to bring a similar resolution again later this month with Rep. Thomas Massie (R., Ky.).

Senator Hawley

Go ahead Mr. President, Primary Them

In what sense is the vote unconstitutional Mr. President?

And if you want to try to lose the Senate, then go ahead and run someone against Collins.

Democrats taking the Senate is a long shot, but the way Trump is handing Tariffs, Epstein, Venezuela, and the economy in general, there’s a small chance.

I expect this resolution will passes the House. Trump will veto it.

The ICE agent will likely never be charged. A reverse angle video shows the vehicle striking the agent, which makes the shooting justified under law. The severity of the strike is not significant under law. If you use your vehicle to strike an officer then you are using a deadly force then the agent, under law, can return fire. From the reverse angle you can see the officer’s left side of his body being lifted off the ground due to the collision.

in addition to all the other reasons the shooting was not as presented by the administration, shooting someone while their foot is on the gas is stupid and dangerous.

she crashed into an empty car, but she could just as easily have collapsed over the steering wheel and caused the car to veer wildly and run over the ICE agents. they could have arrested her later on the road, or at home.

Arrest her in her home? A couple of Blackhawk helicopters and SWAT teams might be enough. Send a couple of tanks also just to be sure. And a bus to transport all the media and protestors to prison.

MAGA is too far gone. there’s no pulling them back to reality. they get the talking points from Fox or Breitbart or Red State and they just run with those

doesn’t matter that there’s a clear unambiguous video. Now NYP is touting the shooter as a hero. for shooting an unarmed American woman in the face. i am sure within the next few days Trump invites the guy to the WH and finds some medal to pin on him.

it’s clear from the ICE recruitment posters and videos that they are targeting young guys with tattoos that are hard right wingers and probably looking for an excuse to do violence and get away with it. They’ve fetishized guns since they were probably 10 years old, and have been steeped in the right wing echo chamber for years. they know they can do no wrong because DHS Secretary and the POTUS will support what they do basically no matter what. if an ICE agent shoots kids sitting on a sidewalk handcuffed, the right will blame in on the left and find a way to justify it.

Apparently I’m wrong , in the USA the supreme court has decided Goldwater v. Carter (1979) that who decides that the USA leaves a treaty is a political decision, itis not specified in the constitution. It takes 2/3 of the sentate to ratify a treaty, and only one president to eave it.
So no country can really trust the word of the USA, it is hard to have them to commit to some political engagement and after that it s easy for them to not conform to them.
In most ofher democraties, the legislative decides the ratification and the leaving of a treaty.

To exit an International Organization requires Congress to approve.
To exit an International Convention requires Congress to approve
To exit a treaty requires Congress to approve.

And, that is in the Constitution, where, EXACTLY? Keeping in mind that Congress cannot balance the budget, or stop its members from insider trading..

Taking your example of the Global Counterterrorism Forum, what has it actually done in 15 years to reduce terrorism, and what did it cost the US in $$$?

BTW, the annual cost to the USA to participate in the GTF is UNKNOWN! Any you wonder where the money goes?

When the Biden administration fomented 30 million illegal invaders (with cultures uniformly alien to the country they invaded) invading the US, they created a situation where rectifying that is something similar to a war. ICE is in a sense fighting a war to deport the alien invaders. They are being attacked for enforcing the law. Tragedies like this is part and parcel of war.

This woman’s actions were more violent than 99% of the behavior of the J6 people persecuted by the DoJ for strolling and taking selfies in the Capitol.

You are framing the argument incorrectly. Biden granted asylum to several million refugees which temporarily gave them legal status providing they met Federal court mandated guidelines while their cases were vetted. Today just as many people are overstaying their visas. Far more people are coming with temporary work permits and plenty are still hopping fences and going thru tunnels. Don’t repeat propaganda, it doesn’t do much for your position other than show that you are an ignorant partisan hack.

it’s not a war in any sense. 99% of them are peaceful, hardworking. we don’t want them here, and that’s fine. we should have borders. And Biden and the Dem policy on this is appaling.

but to say that people who come here to work in landscaping, construction, dishrooms, delivery, farms, hospitality are “invaders” and that it’s a war is literally an insane delusion.

Anthony

the sentence that says there was an agent in front of her car when she was shot is in error. the videos clearly show there isn’t an agent in front of the car. the are to the side.

as usual, different officers are yeling differnt things like get out of the car, move, stop etc… you see this often in cop videos, one tells the suspect to do something like ut their hands over their heads, another tells them don’t move. IDK if it’s on purpise or just lack fo training or coordination, but it’s telling how they then always have a reason to say they weren’t following orders. yes, they weren’t because they were given multiple orders.

he was not in fron of the car. that said, obviously watching it frame by frame at home is not the same as experiencing it yourself in real time. but also as i said above, shooting someone behind the wheel is incredibly risky especially if they are that close to you because they could collapse over the wheel, cause the car to swerve wildly with their dead weight on the gas pedal. As it was she crashed into a parked car, but it could just has easily have run over the agents after she was dead.

Anthony, more than one video shows that he was in front of the car when she punched the gas. Furthermore, he could not have shot her through the front windshield without being in front of the car. Physically impossible. It appears she cut the wheels away from him as she punched the gas, but he was close to the car and couldn’t have known that. And as I said, he had previously been rammed in this manner and badly maimed.

The officers were shouting conflicting commands simultaneously at her, both to clear the area and for her to stop. Which should she listen to in that instant? Are you sure if it were you, that you would have heard all the conflicting shouted commands and been able understand them, and then to judge which to follow before you were shot dead?

It is now perfectly clear she was trying to avoid hitting the agents and leave the area. That is not grounds for summary execution. She did not weaponize her vehicle or try to run anyone over. Anyone with a brain who has seen the video knows this, and it certainly should have been clear to these armed agents. They need to face criminal charges for murdering her.

My blood is still boiling over the shooting. This ICE officer should be up on homicide charges. Admittedly not following the ICE agent’s directions to the T was a Darwin moment but she did not in no way deserve to be executed like this for her stupidity.

It’s clear Trump is looking for any excuse to take more authoritarian control by putting the national guard and military into the U.S. blue cities and states.

As far as the war powers act it is becoming abundantly obvious that we have given the executive branch too much power in the last few decades. I applaud these senators, especially the Republicans whom broke ranks courage, and hope the more moderate Republican members of the SCOTUS have the courage to rein Trump in.

Speaking of Trump and war, I was reading Trump’s Truth Social posts last night.

The “Peace President” is calling for the military budget to be increased to $1.5 trillion in 2027, up from $1 trillion this year.

He says the tariff revenue has been so great that it will not only fund a 50% increase in military spending, but also be enough to cover the tariff refund checks as well as “pay down the debt”.
