In January, a San Francisco panel studying reparations for slavery came up with an ambitious proposal — a lump sum of payment of $5 million to every eligible black American in the City by the Bay.
And that was just the start. The San Francisco African American Reparations Advisory Committee also proposed the elimination of all personal debt, guaranteed income of $97,000 for black residents for 250 years, and providing homes for black residents at a price of $1 each, libertarian writer Kristin Tate wrote in an April commentary in The Hill.
The cost to the city for this fantastical plan was estimated at $175 billion for the $5 million payouts alone, without taking into account the other add-ons. That amount is bigger than the entire annual budgets of 47 of the 50 U.S. states, The Hill reported.
When asked if the $5 million per person number was too large for a city to handle, committee Supervisor Shamann Walton said that it was just the opposite.However, according to Walton, that $5 million per black person is only delayed.
“My hope is that the city’s deficit is eliminated quickly so that we can fund the Office of Reparations and fulfill the commitment made to address the historical injustices and inequities that have persisted for generations for black San Franciscans,” Walton told the Examiner.
Walton did not mention that the projected budget deficit for San Francisco will increase to $1 billion by 2027, according to the Examiner.

The city created the reparation panel in 2020. It made a recommendation in March.
The board expressed “unanimous” support for reparations during the meeting, even after Stanford University’s Hoover Institution calculated that the proposal would cost non-Black families in the city at least $600,000.
There was “unanimous support” for the proposal, yet it did not pass.
By my calculation, the price tag for San Francisco was $192.7 billion vs the $175 billion price listed above.
The entire city budget is only $13 billion.
At the state level, I estimated the proposal would cost a mere $569 billion.
Bear in mind, these reparations are from people who never owned slaves to people who never were slaves in a state that never had slaves.
Too Bad It Didn’t Pass
If the board actually approved this nonsense, I suspect everyone who voted in favor would immediately be voted out of office in special elections and the bill would be quickly struck down as unconstitutional.
Thus, it’s too bad it did not pass.
Fortunately, backlash against woke stupidity has begun.

Four seats held by progressives were won by candidates running on an anti-crime platform. Two others are still up for grabs, with another vacancy to be filled next year by the next City Council.
The clear message is that even Seattle’s progressive voters are tired of rising crime and violence in the wake of the defund-police movement and the 2020 “summer of love.” Last year the city recorded the highest crime levels in 15 years, including a near-record 52 homicides. Some 580 police have retired or quit since 2020, and Seattle now has fewer than 940 deployable officers—the fewest since at least 1991.

Rob Saka, Tammy Morales, Joy Hollingsworth, Maritza Rivera, Cathy Moore, Dan Strauss, and Bob Kettle were all declared victors. Strauss and Morales are the only incumbents to win re-election. Kettle defeated Andrew Lewis.
The WSJ article noted that in campaign mailers this year Mr. Strauss admitted that “defund the police was a mistake.”

Some of these remarks are really racist and I find it disturbing there were so many upvotes. I lived for eight years in a crappy part of DC (mostly black). Knew seven people who were murdered (acquaintances), to give some idea of how crappy it was. (I still find it odd that many people don’t know a single person who was murdered). The majority of people were decent folks just trying to make a living and having a hard time doing it. In that respect I do feel that society owes such people, they (and everyone in this country) deserve better than to live with bars on their windows and to basically live under siege. Reparations are bullshit, stomping down so hard on crime that they don’t know what hit them, and certain other common-sense social programs, would benefit everyone.
I predict the unthinkable. California and many of its cities will elect independent party mayors and representatives. Even middle of the road Dems and limousine liberals have had it.
“Slave Reparations” is an interesting term because determination of slave ancestry will be a challenge at best. I did a spreadSheet looking at what it would cost if we gave 50% of the African Americans in the US (assuming half qualified) … 50% of what we SF wanted to give their folks. With a 20% admin fee (probably a record low for federal work … especially work that include DNA and extensive records searches and data base building) … it would only add $123 Trillion to our national debt. That seems like a bargain. Interest on the debt more than quadruple … but that sure seems like a bargain to me.
I think black folks are actually glad slavery existed since their standard of living would be much lower living in Africa.

I always assumed it was the corporations, especially luxury apparel and luxury car companies, who were pushing for reparations. Because within a year 90% of the people who received reparations would be dirt poor again and Corporate America as well as Corporate Europe would have all of that money.
It’s the same way with food stamps. Nobody gives a rip about the people who receive food stamps. If they did, the stamps would only be eligible for fruits, vegetables, and other healthy foods and drinks that are low on the glycemic index. Instead most people who receive food stamps are obese and look like they probably have diabetes among other health issues. Food stamps are just a subsidy to Coca-Cola, Frito Lay, Nabisco, etc.
Let them exclusively run and collect the full tax from legalized marijuana for 250 years. Just like the Native Americans get to run some of the casinos.

Legalized marijuana has been hit with such severe regulation (who could have predicted this in California) that it is more expensive than illegal marijuana and the marijuana drug trade is back. So the marijuana tax revenues won’t pay for 1% of this.

Actually, I would argue that the Iraqis, Vietnamese, Laotians, Afghanis, and many others who experienced literal raping and literal pillaging from the US government first-hand during their actual lifetime should be the ones at the front of the line. Then, they could move on to the Native Americans, then the children of the women of Okinawa who got raped by US forces (some who were girls during the battle are no doubt still alive). By that point, the USA will be hundreds of trillions of dollars in debt and/or the currency will be hyperinflated. Have you looked in detail at a hotel bill or a car rental bill? They already have so much bullsh– built into them … it’s absurd. I rented a car in Denver recently. There was 32% added to the bill in fees (my great base rate went up a ton) … THEN there was a 14% tax on the base rate AND the fees. So I paid 32% in fees AND 14% tax on the fees. Getting taxed on fees was just next level.
