Labor Day weekend travelers are facing the highest gas prices ever for this time of year. The national average is $4.14, up 4 cents from last week. Continued volatility in the Strait of Hormuz has pushed crude oil prices in the $90 per barrel range. After a record-setting August, this Labor Day weekend is on track to also set a record at the pump. The national average has never been above $4 per gallon on Labor Day. The current Labor Day record is $3.82, set on September 3, 2012. Even though gasoline demand decreases this time of year, typically bringing down gas prices, this year is different due to the high cost of crude oil.
For those who like breaking records, I am pleased to report a new Labor Day record. Heck, it’s a new record for the entire month.
Given the price of oil is up again today, it’s odds on we set new records tomorrow.

If you are young and in good health, rent, food, and transportation are a higher priority than health insurance. Yes, you may get cancer and run up huge hospital bills, but if you can’t pay them, you don’t worry about it. To quote Bob Dylan “When you ain’t got nothing, you got nothing to lose.”
That is, of course, also a problem for the political class and the rich. Warren Buffet, Bill Gates, and other billionaires who have thought it through know that one day the mob and its pitchforks could come for them. That’s why they all love to talk about supporting healthcare foundations, philanthropy, and paying taxes. They are trying to buy goodwill before the next economic collapse comes.
I live in Texas and found long ago what you mention is the Texas model in avoiding Income Taxes:

Philanthropy gives a tax write-off. And it is voluntary, thus revocable year to year. It is no substitute for the reach and scale and dependability of a program/system to set up and pay for things, that is mandatory, funded, and has the other characteristics of sound’ public programs.
Any form of good widespread insurance (which includes any health care program at scale) should be pre-funded over many years, not hastily tossed together without sound planning after some disaster happens. That was the idea of Obamacare: get people who will draw on it later, to pay into it now. This can contribute to sound planning instead of deficit spending into disasters.
