It’s much harder for the US to deport people from countries other than Mexico and families with children. Increasingly, both conditions are in place.
The Wall Street Journal has an excellent report on immigration. This is a free link to Illegal Immigration Is a Bigger Problem Than Ever. These Five Charts Explain Why.
The record numbers of people entering the country illegally aren’t the only reason border communities are struggling in Texas and shelters are full as far away as Massachusetts. In the past, most migrants were single adults from Mexico looking for work. If caught by the Border Patrol, they could easily and quickly be deported.
Now, a fast-growing share are families with children, who are difficult to deport to their home countries. The change started around 2014 and has exploded in the past two years.
Smugglers encourage adults to travel with children, telling them they are likely to be quickly released into the U.S. because the Border Patrol doesn’t have the capacity to hold families for more than a day or two. Once released, they can wait years for their cases to be processed in clogged immigration courts.
Illegal Border Encounters by Country

When deportations are difficult
Managing large numbers of illegal border crossings is tougher when migrants can’t be easily deported.
Because Mexico and the U.S. share a border and have long had strong relations, deporting migrants from that country is relatively easy.
Recently, a large number of people are coming from countries that have strained ties with the U.S., making deportations difficult or impossible. Since 2022, for instance, more than 715,000 Cubans and Venezuelans illegally crossed the U.S.-Mexico border, fleeing political repression and economic distress.
A Global Problem
Migration to the U.S. is becoming increasingly global, with more asylum seekers from as far away as India, Uzbekistan and Mauritania making their way to Mexico and then crossing into the U.S.
The expanding roster of starting points is making it more difficult for the U.S. government to devise a comprehensive migration strategy. The reasons people are leaving their countries differ vastly from nation to nation. The U.S. must also negotiate more diplomatic arrangements to ensure foreigners can be deported.
Researchers and officials say that so long as demand for low-skilled labor remains high in the U.S. and political, economic and environmental distress keep pushing people to leave troubled countries, the numbers of people willing to do whatever it takes to cross the border will remain high.
There are five charts in the article, I posted two of them with thanks to the Journal.
The Immigration Math
Judging from the chart by country, roughly two-thirds (67 percent) of illegal immigrants are from countries where deportation is difficult, with the remaining 33 percent from Mexico.
Assuming that family immigration applies to Mexico as well, another 50 percent of the 33 percent from Mexico (say 16 percent of the total) are not deported because they have kids.
67 percent from non-Mexico plus 16 percent from Mexico with kids means 83 percent of those who crossed and turn themselves into border police are released, free to travel wherever.
Border agents made 2 million arrests in the year ending September. It’s the second consecutive year topping 2 million.
Of the 17 percent deported, if indeed the number really is that high, I suspect roughly 100 percent of them try again.
Effectively, the US has no Southern border.
None of this was a viewed as a problem until sanctuary states like New York and Illinois started complaining.

What a mess.

The US has housing shortage, nurse shortage, teacher shortage, energy shortage. Everywhere is overrun with swarms of people, you can’t even get into the major national parks. Traffic is gridlocked in every major city. Do we really need more people here?
Every illegal immigrant lowers the lifestyle of American citizens just a little bit. Swarms of illegals by a lot.
Then the allies of mass immigration makes no sense. Mass immigration hurts blacks more than whites, look at LA and the whole trend in CA. Latinos and blacks are not allies, yet blacks are silent on stopping their own displacement.
Then there are the Greens. Since each new person in the US will have a larger carbon footprint than if they stayed in Latin America, then mass illegal immigration is an affront to Gaia, but the same people who want to ban gas stoves to save a microliter of carbon are the same ones who want thousands of immigrants to go from subsistence living to living large like the typical American.
So why is this happening? Whose interests are being forwarded by a policy that a vast majority in our “democracy” (70% in some surveys) want stopped, yet still keeps going?
If the rich were affected by illegal immigration adversely, then there would be little to no illegal immigration.
The poor will become poorer as they continue to compete for unskilled jobs with illegals.
Why the populace does not understand the above, I will never understand.
Nobody who’s a Citizen in America is “competing” for Field Hand labor picking Strawberries or other Produce. It’s extremely hard, backbreaking work in tremendous heat and poor conditions.
Almost no Americans want to work cleaning out Sewage, meat processing, other hard, dirty or dangerous jobs that don’t pay squat.
Educate or Train economically disadvantaged people to have a better job. There’s plenty of jobs that are available (Millions) that need basic training or an apprenticeship. Check out Mike Rowe Works and his website for that. He’s the man from the show “Dirty Jobs”.
Lots of Plumbers, Electricians, Manufacturing, Technicians and other hard but well paying careers that pay $60,000+ per year or more and do NOT require a college degree.
1. Make it simpler for economically Challenged people in the US to get these jobs with training and / or apprenticeships. Other advanced countries do this…the U.S. certainly can.
2. Create a “Points Based” Immigration plan (like Canada has) that allows people with skills and massive talent to apply for Citizenship in the US and have an actual real path to citizenship…get the “Best in the World” who want to come to the US.
3. Figure out how to put the people who are waiting for YEARS to get asylum a way to Work and pay Taxes. Way easier than having the Government support them. It would also help to have expedited “Yes” or “No” for Asylum Seekers. Again, way cheaper than paying to put them up for years.
I don’t actually expect that “Comprehensive Immigration Reform” will happen anytime soon. Politicians like to use it to whip up the masses into a frenzy. But that, of course is the real answer…but those other three suggestions would help tremendously.
Cheers!
Sunriver, this may come as a surprise, but the Fed’s been raising rates, in large part to suppress excess wage growth as a result of labor shortages.
We have too many old folks, not ’nuff young’uns, a birth rate v boomer retirement thing.
We’re gonna hafta find a new catch-phrase on the topic “Illegals are taking all the jobs” ain’t workin’ any more.
.
.
We need to pass a federal law that all employers and landlords must use E-Verify. Fine the companys and landlords $10,000 per month/per person for any employee/tenant that doesn’t pass E-Verify. I’m sure some of the illegals will try to work for cash but not having housing or a legal job will make it difficult. Some of the illegals will go to another country. No illegal should be allowed in the country until the date of their court hearing. Have all immigration judges at the border cities.
Make sure to write your Congressperson!
“Make sure to write your Congressperson!”
I prefer to waste my time reading this blog.
It’s the JOB of the federal government to keep illegals out, and deport anyone they find here illegally.
Why are you asking business owners and landlords to do this screening. Wouldn’t have to do it if Uncle did his job…
If Cuba ends empty, that would be a good thing. Instead a communist country, a natural reserve.

Indian Americans now largest Asian American group in U.S.
7 Oct 2023
Asian Americans are the fastest-growing racial group in the U.S., and Americans of Indian descent are now the largest sub-group within that, new data released from the 2020 Census confirms.
Why it matters: Indian Americans have a long history in the U.S. but their population was relatively small until the 1960s when a change in immigration policy helped lead to a migration boom of Indian tech workers. Over the generations, other family members also moved to the U.S.
By the numbers: The number of Americans who consider their racial origin as solely Asian Indian grew more than 50% to nearly 4.4 million people from 2010 to 2020.

California will give some Mexican residents near the border in-state community college tuition
October 14, 2023
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a new law Friday to make low-income Mexican residents living near the border eligible for in-state tuition rates at certain community colleges.
The legislation applies to low-income Mexicans who live within 45 miles (72 kilometers) of the California-Mexico border and want to attend a participating community college in Southern California. It is a pilot program that will launch next year and run until 2029.
Some people travel frequently between Mexico and California to work or visit family. The law will help make education more accessible for those residents and prepare them for jobs, Assemblymember David Alvarez, who authored the proposal, said at a Senate Education Committee hearing in June.
“This pilot program can unlock a significant untapped resource to prepare a more diverse population among our workforce,” Alvarez said in a statement.

With government dept at unsustainable levels, and the FED hiking rates to slow job growth due to labor shortages, the solution is obvious.
We need to add a $trillion to the debt and build a wall to keep these additions to the labor pool out.
See? Smart!
..
Just an general addendum to the subject.
There are two kinds of societies,
One is where community is as important as family, they are intertwined and complement one another.
The other kind of society is where family ties overrule everything, and state is a distant cousin usually ruled by some authoritarian, an image of the society itself.
Guess which society the population tries to flee from?
For what it’s worth, if I was Mexican and crossing into the US, I would also claim to be from Venezuela or Cuba.
North Korean background would be even better, but harder to pull off.
2 million arrests per year.
About the same as the entire population of Gaza Strip.
I don’t have a point, really. There might be something smart to say about the size and shape of the actions here and there.
The risky travel that is illegal immigration into the US probably does result in more deaths per year than the Gaza/Israel situation.
The problemo is that in most so-called third world countries, population growth far outpaces economic growth, even if the economy is just a plot of land to feed a family.
Hence the escape from the hellhole to places where decent life still exists – diminishing as it is.
For the low end of the gene pool, math is a mystery, and the world is what they can see with naked eyes. No way to plan for the future.
This is why I hope the aliens or AI will force mandatory implant of non-removal contractive to everyone when they reach age 11.
This will remain in effect until the world population reduces to below 1 billion.
“Smugglers encourage adults to travel with children, telling them…”
“Smugglers” my rear.
People all over Latin America know that this is how US immigration works. From chatgroups, friends who successfully went before them etc. They’re not drones blindly listening to “evil” “smugglers” out there to “ruin America.”
Prospective immigrants do their homework, then prepare to make their trips as likely to succeed as they can. In the old days, that meant young men went alone, got settled, then brought their wife and kids. Now, that door is largely closed. Hence, instead it is women and, in particular, kids, who are now tasked with serving as beachheads and prybars.
Illegal immigration to USA is a repeat of the Jewish question. Hordes of Jews invaded Germany during the Russian Revolution.
Germany caused the Russian revolution to some extent as they started WW1 that destabilised Russia and then stirred the pot by actions such as aiding Lenin to travel to Russia. Really no different than the US destabilising many countries causing many to seek refuge in the US. Then the influx is making the US even crappier and like in the late 20s there will be another Great Depression and the rise of a national populist with maybe some sort of blackshirt muscle. Just hope they burn down the Reichstag Congress with all the politicians inside.
Your optimism is infectious..
What question?
This “crisis” is easily solved. Collect and ship everyone of them back. It would cost a lot less than the money we are pouring down ths rat holes called Ukraine and Israel. Also cut off all aid to Mexico and put sanctions on them until they change there accommodating policies to the invasion.
We should just annex Mexico and divide it into states. If Russia can do it, then why can’t we?
Mexican immigration problem will be solved. They are all citizens, pay taxes and will be awarded 1st world wages. $20/hr for flipping burgers here in CA!!
Better have migration from Hispanic countries than from some others. They can integrate much easier than others.
Wonder what little neocon in training Dougie means by that remark ( sarc)
Well Freddy I am totally against anyone name Frederick from coming to the USA. All they do is cause trouble and worse of all they pick their noses.
Nicholas Fuentes certainly puts America first.
The whole issue is a political game. It’s been going on for decades. My friends who are Republicans view it as a hot button issue much as they did abortion. Thru were pissed and shocked when SC ruled on abortion as none of them were against abortion just wanted to scream about it during election season. Same with immigration as my friend showed me an article and ad on Brietbart Spanish telling people to come that the border is open and jobs are waiting. Of course in my opinion the correct question is why isn’t the USA cultivating the kind of society and economy that exists in Canada and USA? Then we’d have control of the border as few would want to leave home and family to come here. Of course that would require approval of the Oligarchs who own these countries.
Abortion isnt in the Constitution and as such is a state issue.
Controlling the border is a Constitutional duty of the Federal govt and they have purposely decided to not fulfill that duty.
If they had access to free “money” like the USA does, their lives would be like American lives. Stop fooling yourself into thinking Americans are somehow exceptional. I have traveled many places around the world and for the most part I have observed that people are people.
When others stop accepting fake US currency as if it were real money, and that day is coming, America will sink massively and begin to look very much like these other places which did not have the benefit of printing up currency and fooling other nations to accept it as having value.
Dream on. Those countries are often Dirt Poor in Natural Resources or have fundamentally one authoritarian ruler in charge of those countries. OR have had the US or other countries messing with their governments / economies for decades.
The US is one of the Richest Countries in Natural Resources, a relatively large population but WAY more square miles per person than average and advanced technology and industrial capacity. The US can grow all its own basic food and supply itself with energy.
Very few countries are in the same position.
Cheers!
Yeap. Immigration/ guns/ god/ abortion/ gay rights all you hear on the news for years.
