Republicans Scramble to Name a House Speaker, What’s the Solution?

I have a few ideas to fix the current mess for Speake of the House. First, let’s go over the candidates.

House Speake Candidates

  1. Rep. Tom Emmer (R., Minn.), who serves as the House’s majority whip
  2. Kevin Hern of Oklahoma, who leads the conservative Republican Study Committee group
  3. Byron Donalds of Florida, a political newcomer with ties to former President Donald Trump
  4. Pete Sessions of Texas led the House Rules Committee from 2013 to 2019.
  5. Rep. Mike Johnson, 51, of Louisiana, vice chairman of the Republican conference
  6. Rep. Jack Bergman, 76, of Michigan, a retired U.S. Marine Corps lieutenant general is the highest-ranking combat veteran to be elected to Congress
  7. Rep. Austin Scott, 53, of Georgia, who briefly challenged Jordan in the Oct. 13 Republican conference vote that led Jordan to claim the title of speaker-designee, said he is also running again.
  8. Some lawmakers support Speaker Pro Tempore Patrick McHenry (R., N.C.), who is in charge of the chamber until a permanent speaker takes over.

I compiled the above list from MSN. It may be incomplete.

Mish Proposals

  • It is imperative to kill the asinine rule that allow a single person to make a motion to vacate the chair. I propose at least 25 to make a motion to vacate the chair.
  • Hold a progressive vote for speaker, throwing away the candidate who gets the least votes in each round. Eventually it will come down to the final two. The person with the most votes wins.
  • All the Republicans agree to vote for this person in a full House vote because that still takes a majority.

We are in this mess because a gang of 8 ousted McCarthy with no way to go forward.

There is lots of legislation that is needed including handing the crisis at the border.

“There is lots of legislation that is needed including handing the crisis at the border.”

Seriously, Mish, you think ANY of these worthless pukes cares about any useful legislation? All they have the slightest clue how to do is up spending from a trillion every six weeks to a trillion every six days.

And of course, declaring undying loyalty to and a willingness to pay any price in American blood for Is-ra-el.

The Administrative State inn DC must favor the selected Speaker. They run the Government. Congress is their lap dog and will do as they are told. Until the bribes are collected no one will win—

Hi Mish.

How about rotating these candidates –

Elvin Tappe, Charlie Grimm, Goldie Holt, Bobby Adams, Harry Craft, Verlon Walker, Ripper Collins and Vedie Himsl.

There can be no House Speaker candidate until the REAL Republican party takes control of the of its destiny. One of tenants of radical republican party members, and those in rural America, is ” If you keep your oath to defend the American Constitution, you area a patriot; If you break your oath, you are a Traitor.

It is patently clear that Trump is a TRAITOR, and the U.S. Senators and Representatives that support Trump are also TRAITORS to the U.S., and should be dealt with accordingly.

The only way for the Republican party to survive is to repudiate the TRAITORS within, and ignore their hypocrisy. They are the Taliban of the USA – God forgive them for they know no what they are do! But for us mortals – do not forgive them, vote them into oblivion.

Until the real financial conservatives can take legal control of the House of un-
Representatives, a dismal cycle of financial ruin is on the horizon.

I submit there exists a large majority of moderate Democrats and moderate Republicans that could put both parties out of business – they are called “AMERICANS”. In order to correct the balance, one must vote against the party that is causing the problem (Republicans), then in the next cycle do the same to reject the Democrats. In four and one-half years after 2024, we will begin to build a real system that works for the majority. LOL!

My first comment here after reading for years.

Half of the Republicans in the House finally revealed themselves to be part of the uni-party swamp. It took Matt Gaetz to draw them out. Jim Jordan was the logical choice for those who really want real change to happen which is what the majority of voters have been clamoring for. The other half are fine with what the Neo-cons, Dems and the MSM is doing to persecute Trump…including voter interference and fraud. This battle over the next speaker is really going to be a fight to the death.

I heard some congressman say that they have to get back to work and address the number one priority which is funding for Israel, Ukraine and Taiwan. These sick **** are seriously considering taking in one million refugees from Gaza.

You are missing the point – this is the first public shot fired in the civil war that will break up the Republican Party – either the populists keep the name and history or the uniparty does and the populists will form a new party. Republican voters see the destruction of our money and society and want that addressed – and McCarthy did nothing to address any o it – he just funded the war machine. Voters want no more money for wars period. So when this breakup is complete you see the establishment Rs become Ds and the new party will be populist and in opposition. We are done being suckered by the “small government” lies of the establishment Rs.

George,
Simple fact: There is no way US can avoid war! US is a minority in the world and other strongmen see the chance to seize the opportunity to turn other country’s wealth into their bank accounts. US is dying, more so today than yesterday and slightly less than tomorrow.
I am professionally driven to find mineral deposits that evolve into productive mines, but with the government and societal restrictions on mineral developments in US, I cannot expect to see the fruits of my expert labors in my lifetime – so, why do it? Only because I like to work long hours, carry a heavy pack full of rock samples long distances in the heat, and plot data until I need sleep – an endeavor I am good at.
War is inevitable – the Jews and Muslims have been at it for +2000 years. The Christians have been at it for about the same time, but they are not too concerned who the other party is. Iran-Pakistan-South Africa-South Korea-Russia-China, pick your choice of who is next…only thing is they will not be using bullets and grenades – they all have, or will have, nukes or bio-weapons.

An awesome move by the Republican holdouts. Having no speaker prevents more government waste and may cause a government shutdown which is what the holdouts want.

To bring attention to the debt!

25 is just as ridiculous as 1. More. We’d be locked in a forever status quo, where we do things because that’s the way we do things.

I do like your proposals for voting for speaker.

The problem with 25 is that it sounds a bit arbitrary.
Perhaps there’s a formula that gets you a number that implicitly means no confidence.
McCarthy was never a viable candidate from the start, making the contract with Gaetz is indicative of McCarthy’s unsuitability – he seems to make stupid agreements and then also break his own agreements, that initself suggests he’s not very good at “agreements”. Maybe the best solution is for the public to vote in a Speaker?

We are in this mess because McCarthy did a side deal with the D’s, and hid it until after the CRO was passed. Yes, there has to be give and take on each side of an issue, until consensus emerges and is agreed upon. But lying and cheating and obfuscating on important issues is not give and take. Whatever you call it, I say there is no place for it in government at any level, and until we have the courage to root it out at every turn, we will continue to slide deeper and deeper into a pit of ineptitude, depravity and despair. Where is YOUR moral courage, sir?

Hence you agree that the American system of government is no longer functional.

What will make it functional again? Probably an election… there needs to be a public say on the situation to remedy it; alas the American system doesn’t do snap elections.

Now half the GOP believes the Democrats only win because of millions of fraudulent votes. The right has bigger problems than winning elections, many of them don’t even believe democratic elections are possible.

Mandatory voter ID would be a start in the right direction to correct that distrust.

BTW. Thank you Mish for giving me the opportunity to post on your website. As a long time reader I fumed at your criticism of Trump but after reading your criticism of Biden I’ve come to realize that you do your best to call them as you see them. Now you’ve given me the opportunity to push back on you and I respect and appreciate that.

“…it wasn’t brains that got me here, I can assure you of that.”

CONgress. Take the bribes, launder the money, run up the debt, start the wars and all is right in their world.

I get it, Mish, just wouldn’t be the same without a different jackass at the helm.

Good proposals, Mish, but the MAGA crowd will shoot them down … they can’t stand the thought of a true conservative winning and staying in office for more than 4 weeks. MAGA knows that chaos and dysfunction are its best two friends.

How is giving away money like it’s confetti akin to being “a true conservative”?

This is not a specious question… I mean, you do know what economic conservatism means, don’t you? By implication, conservatism means cuts and paying down debt.

LOL look at how the GOP ran the budget and debt during Trump’s tenure, you cannot say that with a straight face with any attempt at intellectual honesty.

Trump spent money on securing the southern border. I prefer that to sending billions to Ukraine to secure their borders. I endorse what he spent money on.

Gaetz exposing the RINO’s in the house was a tectonic event in American history. The RINO’s in the conference that voted against Jim Jordan also spit in the face of the voters that are sick of business as usual. If we get a true MAGA patriot elected speaker, and get Trump re-elected we have a chance of stopping Americas demise.

In retrospect, Trump was right about everything. From NATO, to securing our southern border, to pulling out of the Iran deal and the Climate deal, to Tariffs on Chinese Steel. Spying on his campaign, weaponization of the DOJ, pulling out of Afghanistan, election interference through, mass mailing of absentee ballots in Blue States and last but not least fake news.
